This was a great stop for us on our way home from Gulf Shores. Great gas prices and luxurious, clean, and spacious restrooms. The country store had all kinds of down home Southern goodies. My experience was to use the restroom and gawk around as I haven't been here since they remodeled. It has really changed and has more of a travel center vibe now than the restaurant/gas station it use to be. I wish it was the right time of the day as I would love to try the restaurant again. We ordered the pizza appetizer and it tasted like a hit pocket. My husband had the fried steak with Mac n cheese which tasted like a box from store. I had the fish dinner and it was a lot of bread not much fish. The hushpuppies were different and good. The okra was very good too. Our waitress was new and very sweet. The other waitress was more experienced and came to refill our drinks. They asked how the pizza appetizer was and we told them. We told them to take it off the menu. read more

Stan's superseded our expectations. We were looking for a truck stop restaurant and luckily found Stan's. Basic breakfast place menu options, but quantity and quality were above grade. First, orange juice came in a frosted mug, which I don't have to tell you, was excellent. Then each plate that came out was bigger than the previous one. Gravy is almost standard for every meal here at Stan's. But the biscuits are what make all the difference. Light and fluffy and just a touch warm. The bacon was awesome and thick, and O'Brien potatoes were the perfect base for the meal. Cool and antiques are the perfect decor. Sadly, I didn't get the servers name, but she was sweet and thoughtful. We are marking this on the map for next time we are through here. read more

So, it's a gas station/restaurant combo here. Stan's is conveniently off the highway and clean. Lots of country charm here with all kinds of historic memorabilia. We stopped in for breakfast today. Staff is pleasant and we were able to seat ourselves immediately. I chose the hotcake and eggs breakfast. Asked for my hotcake to be blueberry (upcharge) and added grits. The hungry bear got the country fried steak meal with an add-on of bacon. We didn't wait long for the food to be out. The eggs were cooked to perfection for both of us! The bacon was good despite being a bit greasy. My grits were good, just a little watery. However, the hotcake had zero wow factor and had an aftertaste of green pepper - recommendation: clean your grill before you cook hotcakes, please. His hash browns were greasy, but edible. He did enjoy the country fried steak - cooked perfect. Biscuits are great, but the sausage gravy could use a bit more sausage. The coffee probably could use improvement and my tea was mediocre. All in all, it's not bad for gas station/truck stop fare. But just not great. Where they score big is cleanliness and staff! Very nice folks and cozy atmosphere. This was my first time, after wanting to try it for a while, and now that I did try them, I wonder why many people have less than 3 stars? I went there on Friday night so I had expected it to be crowded- when I got there the place was about 70-80% full with customers. Within few minutes our server came and gave us menu and got our drink order. Drink order was messed up but it was okay, maybe the way we told her was not very clear. I ordered the sirloin, medium, but what they gave me was more like medium well, but it still tasted great. It had great seasoning and the size was just right. Hush puppies were fresh and delicious too. We did feel that we were a bit rushed to pay, but the server was nice and kept checking after we paid too. In spite of other Yelper's reviews, I had a good experience and i see myself stopping by another weekend night. read more

For many a traveler (and plenty of truckers also) going up Interstate 65 toward Nashville or down it going to the Alabama and Northwest Florida Gulf Coast, Stan's was a lifesaver. A 30-to-45-minute visit to the humble roadside stop got the customer a down-home Southern meal, some needed bodily relief, and a chance to immerse himself/herself into a piece of Tennessee. It was so popular, in fact, that, as Middle Tennessee's growth started coming down to the Columbia area, everybody else wanted in on the game. Now Waffle House and Cracker Barrel (which owes more than a little bit of gratitude to Stan's, given that it began decades ago on the other side of Nashville) are at that same exit, forcing the owners to modernize things in order to keep up with the new Joneses. So Stan's is yet better and at the same time not what it used to be. While the celebration of Southern culture can be a bit in one's face with Confederate-emblazoned items in the gift shop, they are for the most part in relative good taste (and that, of course, depends on one's perspective). Long gone are the "mammies" that truckers used to collect as souvenirs to bring home to Mama and the youngsters. At least, this reviewer did not see any on the shelves The food is still decidedly traditional, especially at breakfast time. I came at about 3 in the afternoon, during the clean-up period between the lunch and dinner rushes. The menu is several pages long, but I knew immediately what I wanted: country ham in some configuration. Turns out, one can get a sandwich of it on a choice of breads--sourdough was mine. I added what I thought was going to be pinto beans as the side. What I got apparently was baked beans instead. In my confusion, I decided not to complain and just tasted it. My guess is that tomatoes are in the current recipe. The Tennessee-style white (navy) beans probably would have been better--and more authentic. In any case, it was satisfying as I was en route to North Alabama to see my family. I only wish the menu was more focused on what made them famous and the prices were a touch lower. But inflation has made the day of under $10 meals a thing of the past, and Stan's is no exception, despite the reputation of rural areas being a cheaper place to live than cities. I think I will in the future go for the breakfast items, which are available all day (just like you-know-who!) Got some BP gas for my tank, and off I went. But I will be back to do a "PM" breakfast and hopefully have a better review for Stan's the next time around. read more

Oh boy. Where to begin with this one? For starters the staff was WONDERFUL! Very kind even though they were absolutely slammed and very busy. The food just isn't good. We ordered a bunch of different things and it was all mediocre at best. Nothing was fresh prepared. Our table had: chili Mac, ribeye, corn, fried green tomatoes, side salad, country fried steak and mashed potatoes and a baked potato. How could ALL of that taste bad? Well, it did. Seated ourselves. Had to do some hunting to find a clean table. Looked as though several people were waiting for take out. Lighting was dim. Drink order taken quickly. Waitress was very friendly. There was four in our party. Two ordered the fried green tomatoes. One ordered a turkey club. I ordered apple pie with ice cream. Several things we wanted they were out of, no soups, no cobblers not a big selection of pies. My coffee was pretty good HI had to ask for a refill. The turkey club was good. The green tomatoes were soggy and over salted. My pie was soggy and apples tuff perhaps over microwaved.Drink orders were not refilled. There's not a ton of options around here, so we decided to give Stan's a try. I'd give it 3.5 stars. The food was fresh and tasted pretty good (the fried okra was especially good). My wife enjoyed her burger. Service was good. Food was a little slow to come out. Nothing special, but we'll definitely come back. It's a welcome break from Cracker Barrel for a cheap and filling dinner. read more

I should have looked here before going! Stan's has to be the worst restaurant I've tried in TN. Meatloaf was the special of the day so I went for it. It's was hard as a brick drowned in ketchup. Every bite oozed grease. The Mac and cheese was even worse. Served cold, it was Loki the stuff you make in the microwave. Returned it for potato salad which was your standard gas station creation. The BBQ baked beans came in a half full dish with more sauce than beans. Even the beans were small. Last but not least, the hush puppies, freshly fried with the predominate taste of old cooking oil. My boyfriend and I had a decision to eat between Cracker Barrel across the street, and Stan's restaurant. We've had a long day traveling, and we were famished! We were greeted by Amber, our server, who was both sweet and funny! My boyfriend had the breakfast, because they serve breakfast all day! He had the steak & eggs, biscuits and gravy and hashbrowns.... I opted for the steak dinner with turnip greens, hush puppies, and fried okra. My steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and deeeelicious. His breakfast was phenomenal as well, and don't forget the huge portions! Amber was very attentive, paying close attention to our drink levels, and whether or not we needed anything. And then..... the dessert...‼ By far, the absolute best blackberry cobbler I've ever had in my entire life! There was two huge scoops of ice cream with it, and it was definitely enough to feed two. It wasn't all bread cobbler either. It was the perfect amount of cobbler versus blackberries. The old antiques and autographed pictures from singers over the years that adorned the walls were a nostalgic feel, that added to the absolute charm of this Hidden Gem! My boyfriend and I have eaten at several restaurants in over eight states from Kentucky to Colorado and back, some of them super pricy, yet disappointing. A lot of times we would get ok service and good food, with a high bill...or vice versa. This was NOT the case with Stan's. We got SUPERB service, AND incredible food for an amazingly reasonable price. All 3!! I don't leave reviews too often, and when I do, it's for sure left a sweet impact in my memory bank. We stood at the "Please wait to be seated" sign for five minutes. During that time, we saw three restaurant employees go past us and congregate in the middle by their computer stand and talked. No one looked at us nor said anything. Finally, a customer left, and as she passed us, she told us they were not seating anyone anymore. Visited Stans since I was staying in the hotel behind it. The clerk at the hotel said it was tasty. I ordered chopped steak, mashed potatoes and pinto beans with cornbread. The steak was cooked well which is what I like...good taste. The mashed potatoes were good as well....the pinto beans not so much. They taste canned. The cornbread is like a pancake and didn't have much of a flavor either. The sweet tea was great! There was only one server working so they definitely need to hire some help...they seemed pretty busy. She did a great job considering. If I'm in the area again I can't say 100% that's I'd visit again. read more

*Attached gas station* This used to be clean, friendly & have a great selection of healthy choices. Now, the bathroom was disgusting & not fully functional. There was a ton of trash in the parking lot. I pulled out a beef stick that expired in August of 2020 - it's December. I showed the guy working & he said "ok," pulled out another one and said "here." So I paid $2.39 for a small beef stick. We won't be stopping here again. I hope they clean it up & go back to the way it used to be before it was sold to the current owners. read more

The store offers a lot of options which is really nice and it's attached to the restaurant where I ordered some food had a bad experience with the woman behind the counter. Definitely not the southern hospitality that I've experienced again and again while traveling here. She was quite pissy I think she said her name was June. I decided to share this with Bob who is the manager who was a very nice understanding man who actually comes from my neck of the woods. While the restaurant was full of locals, (a good sign,) it was severely understaffed. The server did her best, but a scrambled eggs plate and a patty melt meal took over 90 minutes from start to finish. The prices seemed a little high, and although if h it was pretty, the waterless men's room NEEDS AIR FRESHENERS! Ew! I stunk like a goat when I returned to the table after going in to wash my hands--and no, it wasn't me. Prices were about 25% higher than the Waffle House less than three blocks away, and it was ok. I can't rio them too much, because I had the pork chop special for $9.99...it was a solid meal and the pork was cooked PERFECTLY.... on the negative side..my kids said the ham smelled like Kitty litter...but they aren't used to uncured, country ham. read more

I haven't been here in a few years but I planned my trip so I'd be able to eat there because it was so good. WAS is the key word. Our server was one of the most unfriendly people I've ever met in the south. We asked if we could order lunch since we were at a the middle of breakfast to lunch changeover and she said no then proceeded to let the table next to us do so. I tried engaging her and she ignored us. The food quality has also gone downhill. Country ham was so fry we couldn't chew it. Bacon was hard as a rock. Eggs were flavorless. Ordered on wheat bread with a side of onion rings. The food was delicious and all under $10. Now to the service. Tracy took my order over the phone and delivered my food to me upon arrival. Went in..girl at hostess stand said "it will be a WHILE for your wait. Then, when you order your food....it's gonna be a WHILE". Wee stopped at Stan's while traveling because I saw the billboards that said it had been around for 70 years (since 1947). Don't come here expecting a building with the character of 70 year old business. Everything is pretty much brand new. The memo has a wide variety of items to choose from and breakfast is available all day long. My 10 year old son, to my surprise, ordered the ham and cheese omelet. It came with hash browns, grits and a biscuit. He loved the omelet and hash browns, eating most of the omelet and devouring the hash browns. The grits were inedibly unseasoned, but were fixed by adding salt. The hash browns were out of a box, obviously not cut in house, and were average at best, but hey, my son and ate all of them which is great for a 10 year old. The biscuit was huge and would have been great if it had been hot. The menu says it comes with preserves, i.e... Smuckers packets. He said he would give the meal 5 stars. My 12 year old daughter ordered the BLT salad which was huge and loaded with a large amount of bacon. She got it with Italian dressing and enjoyed it while not coming close to eating it all. Her only complaint is that she wished it had come in a bowl instead of a platter, she gave it 4 stars. I ordered the Club sandwich, and which fore is always a measure of a place like Stan's. I asked for it with extra mayo and I had a choice of fries, onion rings and many other choices. Onion rings are also a measure of a place for me and I asked if they were made fresh from scratch at the restaurant and I ways assured they were.... so the sandwich was huge and had a good ratio of meat to bread. I did not care for the American cheese on it, so I removed it. There was hardly any mayo on the sandwich at all, and my extra mayo was served on the side, causing me to have to disassemble the sandwich to add it. The onion rings were made from a bag of frozen product and were what you would expect from that. I would give me meal a 3, giving the experience 4 stars as a whole. If the entire party had been adults, the score would have been more like 3 stars. The service was great. read more
