What happened to this place? Service, 2 thumbs down. Food, 2 thumbs down. Price, 2 thumbs down. If I were to have stepped back in time 100 years and had period Virginia City Star Bakery food it would have been exponentially better. Things are supposed to improve with time, experience, and technique. Not here, they take you back to the stone ages with food and service. Sat down with a joke of a server who seemed like she had never interacted with a customer before. How about a menu, how about some silverware, maybe some water, oh it's morning maybe offer some coffee. Nope, you must fend for yourself. Once we did get some coffee it was not consumable. Better off as a preservative for the decks of medieval pirate ships. Menu was a hot mess for "brunch" and priced like it was a Michelin contending Big Sky restaurant. Nope, iHop would embarrassed this joint. COOK THE HASH-BROWNS CLOWN!!! Scrambled eggs overcooked, bacon you could see through it was so thin. The only thing palatable was the sourdough toast. Likely homemade, but a 12 year old could make sourdough. And the jelly came in a plastic 1oz compote cup. Classy, real classy. Cooks and server all looked like they rolled out of bed 5 minutes prior to service. You pay at a "kiosk" prior to even getting service, so MAKE SURE YOU TIP $0 AS TIPS ARE FOR SERVICE RECEIVED NOT SERVICE ASSUMED. Save your money for subpar service and food and go elsewhere. $17 for 2 eggs overcooked, 3 pieces of thin sliced bacon, and hash-browns warmed to take the chill off but god forbid they were browned. We have been going to the star yearly for 8 yrs and will not be returning. New owners we had to pay for the meal before it came. it took over an hour and it was not busy. When the food came the owner was annoyed I still wanted coffee and wanted to take my sugar for someone else. We had to ask for utensils, butte, salt n pepper and jelly. My husband's pancakes were so cold the butter did not melt. My bacon was raw. They did not check on us once to see how our food was. Next year we will be going somewhere else for our annual breakfast. read more

This is the kind of place that I wish could speak-it would tell so many stories of it's history. But since that's not possible, we can just imagine and admire all the antique decor. The folks who run the place are kind and welcoming. The type of people that will pull up a chair and chat with you while you enjoy your meal if you'd like. The food was good-just what you'd expect from a place like this. Breakfast options were solid and I'd highly recommend trying the homemade jam on toast. It's a winner. read more

This place has a real claim to be the oldest restaurant in Montana. What a cool experience!! Lovingly operated by a warm, friendly family who are invested in preserving the local Nevada City history. This diner was a very calm and comforting place. They did have younger servers but they knew what they were doing. It took a little while for the food to come but the chef comes and talks to you to pass the time. In conclusion the food was amazing. read more

This place is actually in Nevada City, not Virginia City as listed. The prairie fire brat appetizer was pretty spicy and didn't seem to be handmade as described on the menu. Also ordered the fish and fries. The fries were served cold. The fish was one piece and was pretty good. The coleslaw was dry and tasted like it had gone bad. The first time we came we had pretty good service and the breakfast was really good. The second time we ate lunch there the young guy that waited on us was terrible. Dropped our food off and we didn't see him again until he brought the check. All he did was talk to his friends in the back. Never checked on us to see if we wanted more coffee or water. We had to keep waving down other servers to get more coffee. Terrible customer service. The Reuben however, is really good. The bread comes from the bakery and it is excellent. read more

We decided to eat at this quaint little eatery in Nevada City while visiting. We ordered 2 Reubens and a salad. The place was not that busy, yet we waited 50 minutes for our food. I had to ask for a refill, because the waitress was never around to check on us. The food was average, however, the excessive wait time on the food ruined our plans for the afternoon. After waiting for another 10-15 minutes for the waitress to come take our payment, we finally asked a worker if we were supposed to pay up front. They finally sent the waitress out to us. We stopped at Star Bakery on our way to Butte, MT. There were 14 in our party, 6 adults and 8 kids. We placed our order in the restaurant and then walked next door were there was an outdoor sitting area (near the guest rooms which were part of the motel). We ordered beer for the adults and drinks for the kids and went sit in the shade under tree cover while waiting for our meals. When our order was ready, we went sit out back of the restaurant on the patio. There wasn't much shade cover and it was HOT!!! I ordered the Buffalo Burger which came with fries. The burger was okay. The patty was somewhat small and cooked more on the well side. It was good, wasn't the best that I had ever had. The ambiance of the little town was really great, and I think kids as well as adults enjoyed the setting. read more

We stopped hoping to find something for lunch, though the cafe next door was closed. They were only accepting cash at the time and the gal in the store gave my husband a delicious pumpkin cheesecake muffin for free since we had a hangry child in the car. Thank you so much for your kindness and the muffin was delicious!! Next time we drive through we'll plan ahead and be sure to stop and sample more! read more

Two young men working there almost ran into each other carrying food and instead of being nasty one said holy cow and they both laughed. Great place, great people. We went to Nevada City's old town historical district so we stopped here before heading into the town. We got a chocolate chip cookie here that very flavorful and chewy. We came back for lunch and it was almost perfect. The fried pickles had a nice thick dough and I think they used a zesty pickle because it had a bit of a bite. They were spears which was a nice surprise because the pickle flavor came through better. The bacon cheese bison burger comes with two large pieces of bacon. The burger tasted charbroiled but it was nice and juicy. Very friendly service, when my boyfriend asked for grilled onions instead of raw, it was no problem whatsoever. Our water was filled any time it got low. And then there were the awesomely yummy homemade onion rings. Afterwards we got Graham Slam ice cream for desert on the bakery side of the restaurant as well as some cinnamon rolls for the road. This place is a keeper! read more

The waitress said she would remove it from bill, however at this point birthday breakfast ruined and no other compensation. My sister had a hamburger that was dry as the desert! Unedible. We ate here on a roadtrip and absolutely LOVED IT. Food was great (try the spicy pepper burger!), service was good and the atmosphere was really unique and pleasant.
