The school facilities were pretty nice - walls decorated with school decorations and students' works. Very colorful setting that encouraged a safe space for learning. For a Saturday morning program, I was very impressed by the involvement and presence of the school administration. Teachers and the principal arrived on time, ready to engage with the students. Good teachers really don't get enough praise for their dedication. Students also arrived by school bus, which is a reliable and efficient way for students to get to a school program on the weekends - so cool! The thing that really topped it off for me was the diversity in the student population. The student body represents 31 different countries... yes THIRTY ONE countries. Most are children of refugees and come without an English background. You definitely would not be able to tell the latter because these kids were engaged throughout the program, displaying proficient in learning/comprehension. I am all for children growing up with diverse group of friends and learning cultural values early on in life. It's something that won't do harm in their future. The Waldorf School has been a magical experience for our daughter, especially during such uncertain…read moretimes. The quality of teachers and administration is beyond amazing. The community is open-hearted and the education and social setting has allowed our daughter to transform her anxiety into confidence and joy. Simply put, she LOVES school and begs me to let her stay as long as possible in aftercare. The way the administration has reinvented in-person learning during the pandemic is nothing short of inspirational. The outdoor classrooms are located on 6-acre, wooded campus that is buzzing with excitement, music and laughter. As an adult what I've discovered in my career (and life) is that I'm happiest during moments of being creative. This being said, the most significant thing I've witnessed in our daughter's journey at Waldorf is a blossoming of her inherent creativity which translates into more moments of happiness. As a mother I couldn't want anything more for my child. It has…read more32 open classrooms (most don't have all 4 walls and instead have rolling pods and bookshelves for dividers) for K-5th with one class for pre-K. They recently built a new playground and gym in the past ten years - when I was there we had to do chair aerobics in the cafeteria on rainy days because there was no gym. The teachers and administrators continue teaching here for years because of the great support from the parents in the area. Classrooms are never overcrowded, and I can't recall a time when they had to use trailers. It's my dear alma mater and there is nothing bad I could say about this school; most of my great childhood memories took place here - the spring festivals, field days, sock-hops, and fall carnivals.

We discovered Hess Academy when we were looking for a preschool program for our son. By the time it…read morewas time for him to begin Kindergarten at City Schools of Decatur (he was zoned for Winnona), we were so in love with Hess that we decided to stay. There are so many things that are great about Hess, but here the three things that work especially well for us. First, plenty of healthy outside time. The kids begin the day with 20-30 minutes in the playground before they need to into their classes. Lunch and recess are another hour, and everyone finishes the day with another 15 minutes in the playground. Second, classes are capped at 12-14 students with two full-time teachers. The individualized attention that our son's intellectual and emotional needs receive are, therefore, outstanding. Finally, the kids (and teachers) do not go through the horrible Standardized Testing that has become the norm at the Public-School system (although teachers and educators have been saying for years that this kind of testing is pedagogically harmful). There is so much more to love about this school--like the devotion that Hess teachers show their students and the sense of community. Just go and tour the school!
