As a former employee, this was the absolute worst place I have ever worked at. Staff were not discouraged from lying about eat other, assuming the worst and passing it off as fact. The director, Rachel, encouraged this to happen. She would purposely reword complaints she recieved from staff about other to be more negative, misquote the staff accused and pass it off as fact in order to get away with writing people up. It was a very strange power play and a severe lack of empathy. We were threatened with termination if we talked about other coworkers being fired (3-4 were fired in the 2.5 months I worked there) or if we voiced any issues about the boss. We would get in trouble if we talked to one child for too long, and were generally there only to supervise and not allowed to bond with the kids. A lot of the staff was wonderful, but a lot were very harsh to the kids and would get in their face to yell at them. One in particular expressed a desire to beat a child up. The director would similarly be unfairly harsh on the children, and would often roll her eyes when they would come up to speak to her. Considering the fact that this program is not free, I would HIGHLY encourage families to look for alternatives to look into other after school programs if they could! read more

My son attended the after school program in Hermosa Beach. He seemed to enjoy it but we started getting calls to pick him up for bad behavior. They have a policy where they can terminate the contract at any time and keep your money. We were told that one more incident and he would be expelled from the program so we decided to just take him out and find a new place starting the next month. After a week or so the director commented about how well he was doing. I voiced my concerns about him having a bad day, getting kicked out and losing our money. She soothed my apprehensions about continuing his education at Star by saying that because we were working with them she was sure that something could be worked out i.e. prorated refund. Well sure enough one bad day and that was it. Fifteen school days left in the month, he was done and we were out daycare and our $. I should have gone with my gut and just moved him but I really thought they were working with us. Way to go Star you got to keep our $. I understand that it's in your "fine print" that there are no refunds but have some decency and don't completely screw over a family like that. FYI, just because it's in your "fine print" doesn't make it ethical or even legal. read more

My daughter loves all kinds of after-school programs but much to my surprise, she really did not like this one. She said the staff were really mean and loud and yelled at them, and I noticed that the program coordinators were really rude and patronizing to me and other parents. It could be because I'm a racial minority, but I've never experienced such a tragic lack of professionalism and basic dignity before. Do not sign your kids up for these programs. read more

I wish I would have found this gem earlier! Finding a summer camp can be tough, my little and I went through a bad experience, so of course we set out to find a new camp. Then came STAR. The best camp I have come across! More specifically, Mar Vista Super Star camp. My daughter comes home everyday full of stories and activities. I couldn't be happier with how the camp staff has treated her. She has nothing but good things to say, and my 8 year old can be one tough critic. We can't say enough good things about Star's in-person programming during COVID. My elementary aged children have been attending Star at the Eco-Station for several months. They have a lot of fun, time to complete their schoolwork, and COVID safe socialization with other kids. As a healthcare worker, I feel comfortable that the staff (whom my kids adore) are working hard to keep everyone safe. Star has been a lifesaver so they kids can be kids again and I can have time to work without balancing childcare and distance learning. This review is for the Star Little Dippers (PreSchool) Program at Canfield elementary. This program is also available at Castle Heights Elementary, however this is the first year for Canfield. The teachers are top notch and they make children feel like there is nothing they can't do. My daughter never wants to come home and has created some beautiful friendships, her personality has certainly blossomed. She is normally a bit shy so I am always pleasantly surprised to see her interacting so openly with all her classmates. Tuition is very reasonable compared to other preschools in the area which are easily $500-$800 more per month. My daughter has been going to weekly cooking classes (additional fee, still reasonable) and has loved every minute. The little dippers get homework packets to complete weekly, they have different share days and are all ready and excited for Kinder. My children have been in daycare since they were 6 months old and I usually get to see kids who hit or fight or meltdown and the teachers have to deal with that and it takes away from the class. I can honestly say I have never seen any of these issues in this class - and I usually pick up at different times of the day. The STAR Superstar Camp has been fun-filled and engaging for my son who is entering the first grade in 2016-2017. There are weekly fields trips, and my son enjoys them. He also partakes in STAR education at his school, and have enjoyed the various enrichment classes offered during the school year. The staff at his school are wonderful - they are attentive, patient and understanding of the children. My experience with the staff is always great. Each of them are professional and courteous. The programs are fair and reasonably priced. I recommend this summer program to any family to consider. read more

The worst place in the world to work. Any positive reviews by employees are without a doubt made by staff who were asked to write something positive by the administration. This is what you will need to deal with if you choose to work here: -Be belittled daily by administration -It is a good ole boy workplace. The people who have been there for over ten years basically skate thru their time while everyone else is subject to being yelled at, stressed out, be a scapegoat -Nepotism is the rule -Everyone laughs at the admin behind their backs but no one has the balls to say anything -No raises in years while the higher ups get paid $$$ for doing nothing -Volunteer your time for events, basically be a slave to admin. My son took a class from STAR education. His teacher was always late and often classes were canceled due to teacher absence. I made a complaint to the STA R office. It was nearly impossible to contact anyone there and my calls were ignored. I would never have my child attend a STAR class again. Shame on them. read more

We have participated in STAR camps, STAR eco station, STAR special events, and STAR after school programs, and everything has been wonderful. There is a good balance of sports, arts, academics and plain old fun. The staff are mature, sweet and safe. The price is right. The schedule and location convenience is great. Second week of STAR CAMP at La Ballona in Culver City and summer is off to a great start! Both kids having a great time with friends and activities. Pool on Mondays and fun filed trips on Fridays. Love Ms. Perez, the Director. She is very efficient and polite. The teachers also engage with the kids. My kids are excited to get up and go to camp to do gardening, cooking, theater, arts/crafts, team games and sports. 3rd year going to this STAR camp. Both of my kids go to Star all year round as the after school program and them all summer long at Fairburn Elementary. They have the best clesses for afterschool including the Rockstar program and the summer camp is just full of fun. I must give a big Kudos to Arnold and the entire Fairburn team as they are like family to my kids. My son has been doing the Kinder Prep Star camp at Dixie Canyon School last week and this week. He has had so much fun and the experience has been wonderful! The staff have made my son feel so comfortable and have helped him with separation. This place is great! They rescue animals that are either obtained illegally or exotic pets that can no longer be cared for by their owners. We didn't make it through the entire tour this time due to one tenacious toddler who just so happens to be my son. We saw the aquarium area as well as the reptile sanctuary. They recently rescued two alligators (maybe they have a different name?) that were found being shipped from Texas via mail. Somebody stole them and thought sending 11 gators would work out really well. Yikes! Star Eco could only keep two due to their size and facilities. I was really hoping to see the hedgehogs who were recently rescued, but sadly they were snoozing. They are nocturnal so that makes sense. Damn, I really wanted to check them out though. My son would have loved the exotic bird room however he became a bit too cranky to make it. Next time! Personally I've been to Star Eco Station a few times previously and I really enjoy going. Star Camp is awesome. Super staff, very affordable and an amazing variety of camps. There is something for everyone, drama, art, design, computers, sports, you name it- they have a camp for it. They have several options for the TWEENS which is almost impossible to find in Los Angeles. My 12 years old was able to be a Counselor In Training (CIT) which you can't find anywhere. He really loves the gaming class, The Playa Vista site is a beautiful state of the art facility. East access, easy parking. They have Amazing field trips too included in the reasonable cost. They went to Johns Pizza in Buena Park last week - played in the arcade, ate pizza and had a blast! The staff are flexible and registration is a breeze. My daughter was in SuperSTAR at Westwood Charter for 6 weeks this summer and she loved it. The counselors are attentive and fun, very engaging. My daughter who is entering fifth grade in the fall attended one week of Star Minecraft summer day camp for the second summer in a row and absolutely loved it! It's a nice combination of playing Minecraft as a team on the computer as well as bringing Minecraft to the real world through creative, fun games and arts and crafts. My daughter can be shy sometimes, but the counselors were outstanding and helped make her feel welcome. I highly recommend this camp to parents who have Minecrafters at home! read more

Star camp was an incredible way to get our daughter ready for kindergarten and get acclimated to her new school. The activities were incredibly varied and she was sooo excited to come home each day to tell us all of the new games she learned. They took her on two outstanding field trips in just two weeks. One to the Eco Station which houses rescued animals (which she adored) and even one to Medieval Times where she got to cheer for the Blue Knight. I had my child signed up for several weeks of the summer camps that STAR was offering at Castle Heights elementary. For 300 dollars a week I expected a lot. Their field trip was cancelled and they played with hula hoops instead. In the Engineering class my 300 dollars bought a cardboard box that they cut pieces out of. A CARDBOARD BOX. The biggest shocker was when I learned that none of the teachers appear to have any background or formal training. I was talking to some friends and they found out that the teachers just read out of a binder instead of being familiar with their subjects. Call me old-fashioned, but when I pay for my child to receive writing and Science education I expect someone who has gone to college for English and some form of Science, not someone who can read instructions from a book. Definitely will NOT send my child to camp again. It's glorified babysitting. read more

This is our second summer at STAR camp. It's by far the best value summer camp in LA. There are plenty of different themed camps so there's something for everyone. We stayed at the same school for the entire summer but having the option to try out different activities at different schools is great. Most of the camps have an activity for the parents to see on Fridays. It's usually at 2. Definitely not convenient time for working parents to always make it but the opportunity to see your child's play, artwork or magic show is great. The before and after care is great.
