There aren't many hobby stores that cover the variety that this store does. I've visited this store for 2 decades while other stores closed down. Pricing on some things may seem high but good luck finding the train or model stuff elsewhere. If you could find it online the freight would make it cost even more? Poor customer service and unfriendly staff, you feel like you're inconveniencing them by looking through their store. An employee asked my son to not press the buttons on a toy to prevent the batteries from being worn out as I'm contemplating buying an expensive train set, that battery preservation on a cheap Chinese toy cost a sale and future sales. I have been able to find many of the things a need here. I have bought multiple RC cars and many parts. They always have the information I need and can even answer questions over the phone! The customer service is also some of The best! The people are so kind and I've never had a bad interaction. They also have a huge selection of trains and tracks to set up at models! Bottom Line: Family owned hobby shopping offering five-star service for three decades. I am egregiously remiss in reviewing Star Hobby. This is absolutely one of my favorite small, local businesses in Anne Arundel County and I can't imagine there is a better hobby shop in Maryland. I have been a Star Hobby customer for about 30 years. I started collecting LGB trains when I was about 10 so my early trips to Star Hobby were in their old Arnold locations (two of them) with my father. As a young adult I moved to California but now I am back in the Annapolis area and I love going into Star Hobby for all my LGB needs, uhh, I mean LGB wants. Aside from the impressive amount of LGB inventory they have competitive prices. While I go to Star Hobby to pursue my G scale railroading hobby, they have plenty of other stuff too including model railroading goodies in other scales, remote control cars, slot cars and general hobby stuff like adhesive and paints. The staff is always helpful and friendly. They entertain all of my questions about trains, LGB, train shows, etc. and they even help me load my car on my big hauls. read more

We love to visit Don and Paul at Star Hobby. This shop is packed full, floor to ceiling with awesome items, models, trains, rc vehicles, paints, and supplies. Make sure you look up. They sell collections and I was able to get a brand new in the box G Scale switch tower that hasn't been made for 20 years. Wow Thanks! I've been going to this store for many years since I was a kid and its only now that I have started to grow hatred for this store. For 7+ years now everything I've ever gotten from this have always have come broken even though they are marked brand "new" in box. The store's customer service is awful to, they only accept returns if the item is still in its original packaging. One problem issues only appear when the item comes out of box and is either put together or put on the track. If you are into trains they really only have Bachmann trains and O scale nothing else, no variety and the few other items they do have are overpriced and are sometimes about MSRP. But what really broke the camels back was that I bought a China Railway QJ from them and the frame distentigrated upon opening the box, this time they did accept it but the marked it as "Parts" and sold it still for $400+ which is disgraceful. All & all for one of the last Hobby shops in the State of Maryland this is the one I highly reccomend staying away from, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM 0/5 If you want model trains in the state of Maryland, you will either have to wait for the train shows, buy online, or go to Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania to find good deals and more variety. read more

This place is AWESOME! I went there for the first time today with my son & grandson. They have everything you could conceivably need for any kind of train layout. Plus model rockets and other gadgets. It seems to be a family run business. They gave my grandson a book from Bachman about trains. The owner of this store is a racists, he bad treat me, won't let us inside the store with my emotional support pet on hands. There used to be a large number of hobby shops around like Star, but few remain. Even tough I am not really active in the hobbies, I find stores like this to be an excellent source of small tools and materials. Star maintains a large inventory. I went in with my husband, who has become a regular costumer of this store, on a Saturday morning. He spent some $ as he did the weekend prior. First off, I want to begin with the store doesn't follow the mask mandate. None of the workers had it on, just myself and my husband. They were plenty of costumers inside without them as well. As my husband was browsing, I stood pretty much close to him and wasn't browsing as I'm not interested in such a store. I pretty much stayed on my phone so wasn't t really paying much attention to anything else, as I've been to this store a few times before. We didn't stay long and as we left the parking lot, my husband informed me that the older gentleman, the store owner, told his son "to keep an eye on those two" meaning us. Out of ALL the people inside the store, we were profiled bc we were the only non-white and maybe bc we were wearing masks-who knows. Of course my husband tells me this after we leave the store...no big deal, we're used to it, I guess. But I wanted to just point out how disappointed I am of this situation but not surprised. The son was a pleasant enough, but the father was totally out of touch and came off pretty blatantly racist. read more

Everyone was so helpful and the selection was insane! My husband was looking for a very specific NFL themed train and they pointed us in the right direction. I found this Hobby Shop Surfing the net because we do not have any train shops even worth mentioning here on the Denver side of the hill here in Colorado, with that said . I should have written this review last year after I purchased a train for my son. This business is nothing short of amazing. I a day and time when family owned, customers come 1st, business are on the decline, Star Hobby is truly a STAR. Yesterday I went to buy a model rocket for my 7yr old. I had two 10 yr olds with me as well. They were all over the place...they were greeted with smiles. We looked at all the options for model rockets and my son asked about helicopters. We got all those ?s answered. They remote control airplanes. Spent time talking about that as well. We chose a small drone. The gentleman helping us, one of the owners, didn't push us in any direction, but did guide me in the best options for a your guy. He truly wanted us happy MORE than the sale. Incredible! Anyway, my debit card didn't work and they stayed open for me to hit an ATM and return. I am sure they saw the look on my sons face thinking we would walk away with nothing. They even threw in a "birthday present" for my son, an extra battery because he know my boys would "take turns" and when they did, an extra battery would reduce down time. I will return to Star Hobby for all of my needs and sing their praises to all that I know. read more

Unfortunately, I won't be returning to Star Hobby. I have been going there for a little over a year and usually have a pretty good experience. Actually the last time I was there, the owners son helped me out and was super nice and helpful. Anyhow, my 5 year old daughter and I stopped by to pick up a few things. While there my daughter picked up 2 small packs of animals figures and removed them from their hooks in order to show me. An employee told her, "don't mess up our stuff." I assured the employee that we were not messing up anything, and she replied to me, "we hang those on specific hooks." Wow. My 5 year old, under complete parental supervision, went from happy to feeling scolded. She was doing nothing wrong. She was simply showing her dad a $10 item that was on a floor display at what is essentially a toy store. I really couldn't believe how rude this woman was to my child. Well, I guess it's back to Klein's or ordering items online. read more
