She took the time to learn what types of games I enjoy playing and walked me through a few different recommendations, explaining how the gameplay worked for each of them. Toy Trains! Model Kits! And all the other art sets, car tracks, European and Japanese toys and "Stuff." You know how a modern store just has people behind the counter? Hobby Works has staff walking the floor to help you. And they really help. And they know their stuff. And when you're there, it's got that friendly clubhouse atmosphere like you stopped off here while walking home from school in the 6th grade. Sometimes it feels like with online shopping, kids won't ever experience the friendly local stores like we did. Not while Hobby Works is open, it's all modern, but it's a shopping experience that most stores lost over the years- and our kids deserve to experience that friendliness.

The guy managing the store was very helpful! There were different items for sale and I didn't know what I needed. He explained the differences between all of the items and he helped me get what I needed for my nephew. I also learned that pre-COVID the store would host Pokémon games in one of the rooms. I think that's awesome that the store hosted games where the community could get together. I hope they resume once the COVID era ends. (Do adults play Pokémon? After talking to him, I think it would be fun to learn.) Since this was my first time in a sport card shop, I was even able to get a small pack of baseball cards for my friend who collects them. Instead of receiving assistance, the person on the phone seemed irritated that I was simply asking for an update. I am not asking for free parts or special treatment -- I am paying for my items. As a customer, it is completely reasonable to expect clear communication and respectful service, especially when an order is delayed. It's frustrating to feel like I'm inconveniencing staff by checking on something I paid for. I drive 30-40 minutes to support this store and was even planning to purchase a new X-Maxx, but after this experience, I've decided not to move forward with that purchase. For comparison, I've had consistently positive experiences at HobbyTown, where the staff is helpful, respectful, and willing to assist customers -- especially those who are newer to the hobby. That level of professionalism makes a big difference and is the reason I'm more inclined to continue spending my money there. Customer service matters.
