Last November I noticed a minor leak close to one of the skylights on my roof. I hired Star Roofing based on a recommendation, which turned out to be the worst decision to make. They charged me over $500 to put a few drops of caulking on top of already existing screws (picture attached.) Sure enough, the roof leaked again, this time I climbed on the roof to see what has been done. That is when I discovered that all they did was to place single drops of Caulking on top of already existing screws. I hired another roofer and had the skylight sealed and the leak stopped, even with the recent heavy rain. This new roofer charged me only $350 for the work. My mistake was that I trusted Star Roofing's words, and did not go up on the roof to check the work myself. Lesson learned! The awful thing is that not only I would never trust this company ever again, but now I can't trust other good workers who actually do what they charge a costumer for. Wind caused some damage on our detached garage roof, and after obtaining several quotes (which were all near identical) we went with this company for the repair. They were friendly and easy to talk to on the phone, and the repair job was quick and it looks great. However, several issues came up: 1.) After we agreed to hire them they kept pushing our repair date back. They said they were busy with other jobs, several of their employees were sick with Covid, and they everything was backed up from the storms. All of which were probably true, but I wished they had called me to tell me instead of myself having to call them over and over for updates. 2.) They kept pushing the repair date back. While our job wasn't critical (water wasn't getting into our garage) and likely other roofs were a higher priority, it took 2 weeks between quote to having the repair done. Had we needed to cancel due to lack of performance, our older quotes from other companies were expired and obtaining a new one during the busy repair market would have lengthened the process more. SO.... as long as you stay on top of them, they were great to work with. But you need to be proactive because they certainly weren't for our job. read more

Deposit funded early October for a roof repair. Multiple delays according to Don related to weather, staffing and priority of larger jobs. By late December, no work had been completed. This period left my structure exposed, resulting in who knows what damage. Reading other reviews, it appears my experience is an outlier. With so many reputable roofing companies in the Capital Region however, why risk hiring one that may leave you stranded. read more

EVERYTHING smooth . quick and easy .. went on line to request an estimate and appointment time frame .. a representive was back to me in about 10 min .. the next day someone was at my house with samples and time frames for the process .. met with a few other companies .. Star had the best prices and time frames .. Received a day and time and they were their that day .. they told me it would take a day and and 1/2 to complete .. they completed in a day .. the workers were TOP NOTCH started as soon as they arrived at the house and worked until they were finished .. all shrubs and plants were covered with tarps .. clean up was excellent.. the next day a worker stoped and did a walk around just to make sure everything was picked up EXCELLENT STAFF AND WORKERS .. Several years ago we had storm damage to our back roof. We chose Star to do the repairs. They put on an entirety new back roof - including water shield. That experience was, seemingly, a good one. Fast forward to this year- the flashing around our skylights is leaking. Flashing that Star had replaced when they did the new roof. We called them to come and take a look since they (supposedly) have a warranty on their workmanship. They come and look and several days later I get an estimate in the mail that I need a partial new roof- for about a $1500 charge. So much for their "warranty" and customer service. We are extremely disappointed in Star and will never use them again and certainly would not recommend them to anyone! The owners response is completely inaccurate. They did more than just 9 feet. They did to the top end of the skylights and that is the part that is leaking. That was more than 9 feet. They completely redid the flashing around the skylights! After Star Roofing replaced my roof, the walls separated from the house and the roof sloped. This was caused by incorrect construction of house. As noted by Star Roofing In a photo from 2011, the roof previously sloped. Due diligence would have revealed a a flag that had to be addressed before replacing the roof. When they replaced the plywood, exposing the construction, they should have stopped and notified me that the ridgeline beam was broken and that the walls bulged out. Neither time was I informed of a problem; doing the job seems to have been the only consideration. I had buried my husband a week before and was a vulnerable and confused elderly widow who mistakenly trusted Star Roofing to act professionally. read more

Upgrading my rating... After contacting Star Roofing, they listened to my explanation of the issue and agreed to send someone out to inspect the roof. They later proposed a resolution that was both fair and acceptable. It's satisfying to do business with a company that listens and is willing to "make it right". I hired Star Roofing to replace my 25 year old roof. They arrived on time, got the job done in one day and were very professional. Luis and his crew were very conscientious cleaning afterwards, leaving no trace behind except my lovely new roof. I contacted Star Roofing and had them replace our roof. Not only has water been penetrating since the install, but they also ignored my complaints. I was charged to replace any damaged wood, which was not replaced and am in court right now because I have to get a new roof, after just getting this done in September of 2019. The company, namely Peter Wall, and his associates had no regard for the damage caused or for the cost to repair the mess made. The entire roof needs replacing. I also incurred costs of almost $2000 to have someone remove and replace the sheetrock, in 3 separate places. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Anyone who chooses to work with them should retain their original contract actually be there to check and see what materials re being used, as NO new wood was installed to remove any damaged wood, as quote in my contract. read more

Paid for an estimate for a new (replacement) roof, which was done in a timely manner. The estimate seemed low (not that I wanted to spend more money) and did not include work that I asked to be included. Felt that they were more interested in being 'fair' to the seller - who had obtained his own estimates (at no charge). The cost of the estimate is deductible from the roofing cost - but I won't be using them. They took care of the permit, the roll-off, everything. Let's face it it's a messy job. I cringed initially bc my gorgeous mum was under black sheeting and there was stuff everywhere. We couldn't find anywhere near a comparable price to compare to their quote. They came at 0730 and the guys started working. Some couldn't speak English that well they worked until 1730 with only a short lunch break. They put down the ice & water shield just like they promised and found a few small areas that needed new plywood bc they were soft. They were courteous and professional and I'd recommend them to friends and family. The roll-off was picked up after the weekend and they took all their debris. I love my new roof! We were completely happy with our roof replacement. They did an estimate, worked with our insurance company, and did the job sooner than we had expected. Their crew was extremely efficient, thorough, and cleaned up quite well at the end of the day (much better than a roofer we had hired for a previous job). When there was a problem with the skylights they had put in, they came back at the beginning of the following spring to replace them at no additional charge. Star replaced my residential roof several years ago. I had problems with the quality of the installation from the start - from trim/drip edge to vents. The workmanship was not of high standards and the 'supervisor' was rude. Within a couple of years the roof started to leak around two vents. I repaired them myself because Star's workmanship and customer service/respect was so poor to begin with - I did not want them back. Unfortunately the leaks have returned. I have contacted Star and have been told by the service rep (Don) and the owner (Peter) that Star will not fix the leaks. The warranty (just 5 years on workmanship) has expired. The company's jingle (on this site's page) states: Star was founded in an effort to be customer focused... At Star Roofing, we pride ourselves in offering quality, on-time installations at a competitive price. The pride apparently lasts 5 years. Their price, by the way, was middle of the road; $2500 more than another locally owned business and $4000 less than a big box store. The company was lacking in other ways. Star stated before the contract was signed that the installers would have a certain average amount of experience; they did not (I know because I asked them how long they had been doing roofing). Star stated that they would use 1/2 inch plywood for repairs; they did not (it was 3/8 inch particle board, I know because I saw it). Star said that so-and-so (name withheld) would be on the job all day; he was not, someone else was supervising (and he occasionally left, to take care of personal business, he said). Star stated they would use a certain color/brand of roofing; they did for most, but the corners were a different color (only slightly, for sure) - which was not mentioned to me beforehand. I am not a business man so maybe I am naive about what it takes to earn a living in today's business climate but I was raised to do quality work and honor my word. read more

If you want quality service and product hire STAR. If you desire a contractor who delivers services when he or she promises said service, hire STAR. If you need a vendor who stands by their initial cost proposal, hire STAR. If you are impressed when a company's owner comes to your home to check on the work being performed, STAR Roofing will definitely impress you and amaze you as to the quality of work they provide. If you are or were in need of a new roof as I was, and approaching cold wet weather made your need critical, you need STAR Roofing. During one of the many Albany winter storms, the metal spacer between my roof and my siding was blown off. I asked Star Roofing for a quote and the told me their hourly rate and that they would have to charge me for the custom metal they would have to cut to fill in the missing metal. I thought it seemed reasonable, so I said yes. I left for work one morning and came back to the front of my home looking better than new thanks to Star Roofing. Their bill was less money than I had expected to pay. Very fair price, very good work and Don at Star took the time to explain everything to me. Found a vent pipe boot that was torn on my roof so I decided to call Star Roofing for a price. They told me it would be $325 dollars. I thought that was crazy considering the boot is $10 dollars! Found a product called Perma Boot at home depot which just slips over the existing torn boot. It is hard plastic and literally installed in two minutes. Paid $18 dollars and they are guaranteed for 50 years! I was so impressed with Perma Boot I did my other two vent pipes just to be safe. I would recommend anyone to use this product. Saved me a ton of time and money. I understand everyone is in business to make money but to charge that amount they wanted to charge me is absurd. read more
