I ordered a pint of the Big Bear (an American California-style stout), because the day I was in Starboard Brewing was the day that Southern California had an earthquake. Obviously, the earth was telling me to get a dark beer named after a mountain in SoCal while I was a thousand miles away in Door County. Obviously. I need to stop listening to the earth, because I forgot that dark beers are not my favorite. But if you like dark beers, this one be dark and ye might like it, me thinks. I tolerated it and finished it all because ... beer. My companions got lighter beers (one of them came with a slice of orange). We also ordered a little charcuterie job that came with Ritz crackers, white cheddar, yellow cheddar and gherkins. Nothing fancy, but something to munch on. Starboard has a crazy-looking contraption in the back that looks like a pool table and pinball machine. I found out later that it's a bumper pool table! We came here while staying in Door County and had a fun time. This microbrewery has a delightful selection of beers. I went with their maple bourbon ale, and it was delicious and had a great taste and lovely aroma. They also have tacos, which were all made with some combo of pulled pork. My boyfriend had a few of them and said they were tasty. There was plenty of seating available, and they also have board games available. We played chess and then trivia during our visit! What a fantastic little brewery in what appears to be in an old hallmark space. We had a smoked beer that was so unusual and unique that I took a growler home. This place was super cool! They are by definition exactly what a micro brew should be. They are a small batch brewery which alternates their beer regularly. The Brewer was also the bartender and was able to tell us in great detail about how each beer was made. That was amazing! Plus the beers were wonderful! I would recommend a few, however, by the time someone reads this, they are most likely onto the next batch of beers. Not only do they have good beer but a wide selection of board games and card games, available. This was a lot of fun to spend an hour, enjoying some beer and playing some cards. Wonderful place! We stopped by here for a drink before our dinner reservation was ready. Nice variety of beer. The IPA, the brown ale, and the stout were all really good. They don't sell it anywhere else so it feels unique. Super cute place with some comfy couches. Very good service! The lady helping us behind the bar was extremely friendly and let us try some of the beer to figure out what we wanted. She even let us know that you can take their beer to go and walk around Main Street while drinking it if you want and even go to the concert in the park! Highly recommend! Will be back! read more

The owner of Ahnapee Brewing suggested we visit this brewery. There were around 20 in our group, and when we walked in, we were the only customers during most of our stay, but to be fair, it was only 2:00. The space is clean and furniture is spread out, so if it gets packed, there is plenty of room. I sampled 3 or 4 beers and enjoyed all of them. Stephen was behind the bar and took good care of us. He also took a few group pictures for us and we asked him to be in one of the pictures, too...cool dude! One thing that was unique was the Bumper Pool Table. I probably haven't seen one in twenty years. I don't even remember how to play, but Stephen took the time to remind us and some of the guys got a few games in. We enjoyed our visit and stayed for quite a while. Stephen had an iPOD set up playing music but it wasn't blaring. I actually think slightly louder music with speakers around the tasting room might have helped the atmosphere on our visit. Maybe it gets louder at night. Regardless, we really like Starboard Brewing, and I highly recommend that you pay them a visit. BTW, it's a little tricky to find. It's next door to the Hallmark store. read more

I'm glad Starboard was part of the NEW Craft Beerport, otherwise I might never have gone here! It has a great spot downtown Sturgeon Bay, and has a homey and chilled back vibe. It's open with plenty of tables along with bumper pool and other board games to play. Going on a Friday afternoon, I was surprised that the seats at the bar were basically full but we were all from out of town. They had about a dozen of their own beers on tap. I heard that they never make a beer the same each time they brew it. There will always be a little variation to it. I first had a smokey pale ale which I really liked. Smokey beers are not very common, so I always have to take advantage of that. The other beer I had was Down to Earth, an imperial saison. I don't know the alcohol % is but it kicked my butt. It was also went down well as I like the taste of the orange peel and white pepper. The bartender, who I believe is one of the brewers, was very nice and knowledgeable as he seems to be well connected in the craft beer scene. Other patrons were talking about people they know and breweries they like and he knew everything about them. I would have no problem going here again as this is a nice touristy spot. My concern is if I came back, it would be nice to have some of the same beers that I've had before. At the same time it's always fun to taste new beers! read more

On top of the bartender being the most dead faced unfriendly person I experienced in the county, the moose IPA was awful. I was there on Friday, 27 February At 5 PM. The female bartender was terrible. I finished my pint and she proceeded to take it and wash it and then started washing a whole bunch of glasses while talking to one of her friends at the bar without even asking me if I wanted another drink. She always seem bothered when ordering-an appetizer or a beer. Will not go back. The weird thing is it appeared that one of the owners were sitting at the bar and he was oblivious.. it must be a place better suited for locals. I'm a fan of the craft breweries popping up all over....and I try and stop in as many as I can! This is very nautical themed as the name would imply...with some pretty cool and unique art on the walls. Small bar to sit at, several tables spread out and also a couple loveseats to get real comfy. Several groups were playing board games they had available while they enjoyed their beers. Big Harry Potter fan so I loved the names of a lot of their beers being a riff off the books characters. I forgot to get a pic of the menu (doh) so you should go to see the fun names for yourselves! I had the beachcomber and it was ok, not anything I'd have to have again but also my fault cause the lighter beers just don't have flavor to me anymore after switching to the dark side in my maturity lol. My fiance loved this brewery! The employees were so friendly, and there were lots of (well-behaved) kids in there, so it had a nice family touch to it. While they don't offer much food, what they do offer looked and smelled yummy! We loved our bartender, and he even recognized us and said hi at the market the next morning! We ended up purchasing a growler to bring back home. I'm glad we got to visit this brewery and enjoy a few new beers. We will definitely be back if we are ever in the area again! read more

I can't do less than one Star, so one star is what you get. I went in with my family and we all had something different. I can buy Bud Light, which is cheaper and honestly has more flavor than the IPA. The Doozer was a watered down "amber ale". Whatever my husband had, left a bad taste in my mouth. The bartender was wrong in how she was explaining a DIPA to a customer. She also cannot pronounce the local business name, where they get their cheese from, correctly. While I may have looked like every other tourist in the place today, I'm a native. So to pronounce business names wrong and also not know how the beer you are serving is made, just wrong on so many levels. Maybe they taking the first level of the Cicerone test???? read more

There was also some appetizer-type items to order for snacks like flatbreads and cheese plates. We ordered a cheese plate. It was okay for a $6 cheese plate, which is pretty cheap for a cheese plate! My review was working towards being really great, the food and the beer were fantastic. I was loving the small plates and the atmosphere....until...a group of young children started running all over the place and playing hide and seek, counting to 29 behind my seat and screaming at each other. I really liked the food and the drink but seriously, I wouldn't come back if this is the norm for your restaurant. I have three children, I've even had to take my kids to work with me over the years but I would never let them disturb the customers. This is a fun little place to stop for a beverage on the way up to the peninsula. It's waaaay better than the other nautical themed brewery on the drive up 42. The atmosphere is bright and minimal,nothing special. The interesting thing about this place is that they do small batch brewing. They only brew a small quantity of beer in any given style which means you will always encounter different and interesting things on tap. It also means that if you like something it may not be there the next time you go. Small batches allow them to take risks and do some experimental stuff. Contrary to one of the other reviews the staff was very friendly and spent some time with us explaining their philosophy and how they brew their beer.
