As a frequent Starbucks drinker this is the worst Starbucks I've ever been to. Understaffed for the busy season in Salem. While my drink was spot on it had syrup and chocolate on the side and was not cleaned off. The thing that was most annoying is they had one, one person bathroom and there was a line.. All of a sudden a staff member decides to cut in front of the entire line to clean the bathroom; and he took forever. So here all 6 of us stand needing to use the bathroom and he's taking his sweet time cleaning it. read more

I don't like at all how they take away the milk, half and half and skim milk containers an hour and a half before they close. When they do that they stop asking shall we leave room and don't even offer the cream you have to ask. Why can't it be left for the customers right until 8:15 pm. It isn't right. read more

Absolutely love this Starbucks! The staff is always amazing, they know my name and my drink every time. I have been to several other Starbucks and have been disappointed each time whether it be the rudeness of the staff or my drink being wrong. Everyone who works here is super nice! They always take the time to ask how your day is going, and I genuinely get the impression they actually care about your answer. The only downside is that the line can be mega-long on weekend mornings, so maybe an extra staff person or two would help... there have definitely been days where I spent almost 20 minutes in there, just to get one drink. Otherwise, they rarely make mistakes and do their best to move things along. They always have lots of product and samples too. I'm lucky to have them nearby! read more

I have been going to this Starbucks for approximately 4 years or more. Why do I keep going back?? The service and friendliness of the barristers. It is clean, organized and managed flawlessly, at least until recently. I don't know what happened. The reliable employees who always had a friendly smile and knew your name were an oasis in the day and world of its customers. The store and its employees were part of the cohesiveness of the neighborhood. The pride and attention to their work and making the best drinks was never compromised. Yet all of the long-term employees have deserted the ship. It is not the same. In the difficult and sometimes dark times it was a treasure; a light in the forest,unique. Now it is standard fare which can be gotten anywhere. I saw this same trend in the insurance field in which I worked for many years. The tempered experienced and wise long timers disappeared and with them the wisdom that only experience can offer. The recruiters pondered where did all they all go?? Last nite there were only two staff and the lines were long. There was no experienced senior member to float in calmly and see where log backs could be corrected. The preparer of drinks was running ragged trying to keep up with all the orders. It was not the people's deficiency but the lack of staff in a busy, hectic surge. If nothing else, my experience has taught me that companies who treat their employees well, like family, are rewarded by loyalty and service far and beyond that required/expected. I wonder when the companies of today will "get" that lesson.? The cost of drinks was offset for me by the outstanding service and caring of the entire staff. Now, I frequent other cafes where I can still get a friendly hello and sense of being welcome; and not just a "customer". I hope you can get back the friendliness and unique ambiance that was once a delight!. I truly miss all the fine people who once were like fixtures in the store. I am sorry to have lost them. I'm a big fan of Starbucks in general, but a couple of things about this particular shop irk me, so it gets three stars instead of the usual four that most locations of this chain get in my book. This shop is in a great location for the residents downtown and for those visiting Salem for the day, but for someone like myself who lives nearby, but certainly a driving distance, and just wants to quickly run out and get his 'bucks fix, it's kind of a pain in the neck to get to, first requiring me to wait at what I consider the longest red light in the world to make a left onto Derby St and then navigating Dodge St, which, despite being two-way, is extremely narrow and has parking on both sides. The shop is right at the end of Dodge St, where conveniently there is a large municipal lot, but it is often full and your coffee will always cost you at least an extra 25 cents as it's all metered spaces. Service has always been friendly, but they routinely commit the cardinal Starbucks service sin in that iced coffees (i.e., an order requiring no special prep) are most of the time submitted to the barista's queue, so you can end up waiting awhile for a drink that takes 12 seconds to pour. read more

To begin with I will say that I was in a rush this morning, so I did preorder my Cafe Misto as usual as well as a Carmel macchiato for my wife. The traffic is horrible getting into this one due to typical traffic plus construction, not Starbucks fault. That being said I did not get a chance to try my coffee until I was away a few miles when the traffic died down. I took a drink of my coffee and to my surprise is was horrible. It was something, but that something was definitely not what I ordered. It was black coffee with something on top. Now at this point I was already to far away to turn around being that it would have added another 20 minutes to my trip. So i decided to send Starbucks an email expressing my concerns and they did not wish to respond. Shame on that location for passing off a drink that was cleanly what I ordered and shame on the corporate concern team. For this I would not recommend this location. You would truly be better off going to a gas station than this location. read more

this place is terrible. I live in the neighborhood and have tried to make this work, but it is consistently dirty, always has an odd smell (like garbage) and the service is rude and unhelpful. parking in the area is all metered and they do not give out quarters for the meter, making it pretty inconvenient. It is also relatively small inside making it hard to study or do any work from the limited tables. read more

I've been coming to this Starbucks for quite a few years now. While I cannot really offer an opinion of the fancier coffee drinks...the regular coffee is pretty good! It's consistently hot...which is more than a few other places in the area...besides DD. The food fine as well; as with the coffee..it is consistent. The service is very good. I've never had a problem...and most of the employees have been very courteous. My problem with that place is that it is fast resembling a homeless shelter. This location has limited seating...about two small tables and one big table...and a counter with a few chairs. Because of the corporate decision to allow people to linger in the establishment..whether or not they are making a purchase...people are taking full advantage of it. In the morning..the tables seem to be monopolized by a few people who rarely look as if they purchased anything...and one person who comes there to sleep...apparently. I do know that there is a notice on the counter detailing the rules....but it seems to not be enforced. Does Starbucks really intend to be social justice warriors instead of a business?? They are going to drive people to other establishments. read more

My family and I collect Starbucks cups and go to Many different Starbucks and this one by far has been the worse. The employees were very rude and not personable at all. We ordered a pour over and they forgot about and when asked about the drink they gave attitude when handing us the drink there was coffee all over the lid and sides. The store itself was dirty. I went in before work the other morning. You could cut the tension between staff with a knife. The girl who rang me up told her the other worker she had drinks to make and she goes, "Yeah I know, I'm finishing something," and kept washing some pitcher. The girl finally got to my order. She made my drink and just shoved it on the counter, didn't say a word, and walked away. I assumed it was mine because I was the only one waiting so I asked. She goes yeah and turns right back around. So rude. read more

The parking lots directly outside this downtown Salem location are almost always completely littered with trash, stray papers, plastic cups, empty beer and soda bottles and cans; you name it, it's usually out there in front of this Starbucks location. That is not Starbucks fault per se, as they are a tenant at this site. But one would think, a company the size and stature of Starbucks would barter some kind of deal or agreement with their landlords, to simply clean up this daily mess. But they don't seem to. It's been like this for years. To be fair, occasionally at 7 am, the parking lots may be freshly cleaned, but this is more often the exception and not the rule. Directly outside the door, this particular Starbucks storefront is also well-known for its crazy menagerie of street beggars, homeless, stray papers and debris, endlessly overflowing trash and recycling bins, as well as the occasional odd dog tied or leashed to a metal street sign directly outside the door, waiting and panting as its owner quenches their caffeine fix. Directly outside, this location's staff have been known to decorate two forlorn window boxes with seasonal displays, including pathetic pumpkins in October, and dollar-store, red-white-and-blue decorations for the 4th of July. But this was most likely prior to the current management team. Now, all of this said, once you're inside and past this Salem menagerie, this location is, in a word, truly Excellent, with a capital E. 5-Stars. The inside is always perfectly temperature controlled, super cool on the hottest of days, warm and inviting when the fall and winter chill sets in. The decor and atmosphere inside is always super clean, current, up-to-date, and inviting. This is the one location where I actually want to sit a while, update something on my laptop, or read the Globe for a few minutes, for old time's sake. There are a few odd birds who do find their way in on occasion, but they are usually few and far between, and this location's staff is always kind and considerate to everyone, quick to smooth over any rough spots or patrons. In short, this site, in my opinion, deserves a Starbucks Special Recognition Award - if there is such an animal - just for being able to rise above the fray and squalor of it surroundings. Some suggestions: Provide Silk Soy Creamer - not soy milk - at the cream/milk bar. Provide at least a few vegan dessert selections. Provide table umbrellas, a bucket of ice, or a Cool Pass for the scorching hot, often littered stretch of sidewalk where the outdoor tables are set. A-Plus: The rest room at this location is nicely designed and always completely spotless. Good on ya - Salem team!! ***** Keep on serving up that awesome Salem Brew! This is the cool Starbucks. I live in Peabody so it's not always the most convenient but it's my favorite Starbuck's. It's so relaxed. I like seeing employees that don't all look like white upper class hipsters (Hello, North Beverly Starbuck's). Salem is an eclectic place and this is no exception. They are super fast and nice. The only thing I wish was that it was bigger with more tables. With a child, I'm not exactly getting to hang out there everyday like I did in college but it's not always easy to find a seat. read more

Been getting into a Starbucks rhythm over the last few months to use the wifi and get some off site work done. I'm no hero, but I do feel obligated to purchase drinks, and sandwiches for my stays. First, I have to commend management on their patience allowing the 'local flavor' to bring their own food and drink, and take the limited seating while purchasing absolutely nothing. Then the off the street parade to use the 1 rest room they have. Its always left a mess. As a customer, its all a bit much. I'm sure its part of the reason they put combination locks to use the rest room. I'd guess 1/3 of my visits have resulted in turning around and going to another coffee shop. Lastly, quick pet peeve, but they are always out of the blonde roast by the time I get there, which is always before 10am. Add the pay to park with 30min limit, and this location has problems I haven't seen at other locations. read more
