My first time going to this place and the line was out the door and to the corner. The food was so tasty that I forgot to take pics. We got bagels with egg, turkey and cheese. I have always loved, appreciated and supported What's Brewin'. However today they've lost me as a customer. I understand there are certain protocols in regards to COVID-19, and I respect that businesses are doing what they can to protect their staff, but there's no reason to be absolutely rude to people who have continually supported them through the years. I came in and forgot my mask because I went for a walk and didn't anticipate going inside anywhere, but since it started raining, I decided to stop by and support since I hadn't visited in awhile. As I've said before, they've been known to be contagiously friendly and nice, and today that couldn't have been further from the truth. They made me feel like I shouldn't be there, and question why I was trying to support a small, local business that doesn't seem to want to treat people with basic respect? So I covered my face with my hood when walking in, anticipating that they may have a mask for me as most businesses do, and right when I came in, they said "you can't order without a mask," pretty much GET OUT, even though I did cover my face fully. By the way, there were no other customers, just 3 people behind the counter. Then the girl at the counter offered me a mask but said I needed to put it on outside. Okay, common sense has left the building? I tried to ask if they had sandwiches available since the last time I visited about a month ago, they weren't, and I didn't get an answer. They just ignored my question 3 times. But I respected their request for me to take 3 steps outside, to put on the mask, to come back in, and make an order. So I came back in and asked if they had sandwiches today, to which the gentleman condescendingly said "we always have sandwiches." I said, "Yeah, well, last time I came in, I was told there were no sandwiches that day" to which he replied "we may have not had bagels but we always have sandwiches." Okay, but you weren't there that day so you don't know exactly why I was told that. It was an argumentative, hostile energy. So I still continued with my order, because I do like and respect Kevin, the owner, and got a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. The coffee was okay, not too strong. The sandwich was alright. Their friendly energy has left the building, as with their respect for their customers. I shouldn't be standing in an establishment asking myself why I am there. I was blown away by this Beverly coffee shop. We were actually referred here by the owner of Tartine Kitchen a few doors down (I stared getting special with my coffee order). Quite impressive when another business owner who serves coffee will send customers here for a great cup of brew! As soon as I walked in and saw the wall of coffee syrup flavors I knew I was going to love it. After living in Seattle for several years it's hard to find a coffee shop that does espresso right. In Seattle every coffee shop and every coffee cart in every corner can make an Irish Creme Latte...including Starbucks. Joy filled my heart when i looked up at the latte menu and noticed a specialty latte called "Bailey's Irish Creme!" The barista created my drink perfectly...strong espresso, not too milky and the Irish Creme Flavor coming through making this the most balanced flavored coffee drink anyone will ever have. (On a side note, I'm not a fan of too many flavors in my coffee and I only order a few different flavors when available) My trip to Mass is complete this year! I've longed for a great Irish Creme coffee since leaving Seattle many years ago. Now here I am in a small New England town and my dreams are being fulfilled. We stopped here on our way into Salem Mass for a coffee and a bagel. We were surprised and delighted to have so many choices for lattes. In addition, I was happy to see that they offered milk alternatives, including soy and almond. Our bagels were fresh and tasty. I ordered peanut butter as they only other vegan alternative was avocado (and I wasn't in the mood). I am very fond of What's Brewin' in Beverly, MA. Their breakfast sandwiches are affordable, fast, and a good size. They have a wide selection of coffee flavors, bagels, and sandwiches to choose from. The outdoor seating is perfect for Summer and Fall! I highly recommend trying the french vanilla coffee and a breakfast sandwich with prosciutto. The only downside is the indoor seating. Sometimes I want to sit down, but it's too cramped inside to find a comfortable seat. Its definitely more of an in-and-out type of place where you wouldn't sit down to do your work. The staff was friendly and they have a coffee punch card for each visit you make (perks, YES). I am in love with What's Brewin. In fact my biggest concern when moving away from Beverly was finding a local spot that could match their quality. Needless to say? I haven't found that. Their coffee is easily the best I've ever had. So much so that I would usually grab a 2! just based on taste alone. In fact, I found myself going there even after leaving the area... until 2020 did its thing. But I will eventually make the long drive up once again just to be back there. It's a small place so it can be pretty cramped at busy times with lines out the door and down the block. It may not be the best place to bring your laptop and get some work done, but that honestly might be the only downside. Kevin, Lindsay, and the brew crew are some of the nicest people around. I have no idea how they can be so active, alert, and friendly at 7 in the morning. But they'll put you in a good mood. They'll go out of their way to try to accommodate you. What's Brewin' is hands down the best coffee option within a 10+ mile radius from Beverly, MA. The coffee options are all phenomenal and the staff there are the nicest people you'll ever meet. I go with my wife several times a week and if they were open later in the afternoon, I would probably go almost every day after work. A little on the pricier side if you're comparing coffee sizes to Dunks or Starbucks which are both within a couple of miles, however, it's a no contest who wins the best flavor. This is by far my favorite coffee shop. They have started taking card payments, which means I visit almost every day. Their lattes are delicious (my go-to is the Snickers latte) and their food is great. The staff is super friendly and know almost everyone on a first name basis. While there is seating indoors and a couple tables outside when weather permits, it can become a little crowded, so it's more of a grab and go kind of place. It can get pretty busy but the staff are very quick and efficient while being so welcoming, so it's worth the line. read more

For a drink I had a medium iced coffee banana caramel with a little cream and sugar. What surprised me is you could actually taste both flavors! I like to hit up this little joint on my weekly trek to Bevs. My habitual combo is a vanilla latte with a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant. I can say without hyperbole that the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant (henceforth known as "sexwich") is the best thing I have ever eaten out of a paper bag. It's just the right ratio of melty cheese to crispy bacon, and the croissant is perfection--not stale and not overly greasy. Didn't even leave grease stains on the bag! Impressive. The atmosphere is not flashy or pretentious. They don't play Nouvelle Vague or throw around words like 'breve' or 'ristretto', and I certainly wouldn't classify the older gentleman behind the counter as being of the 'barista' genus. If you require that type of douchebaggery to accompany your shamefully overpriced morning beverage, find another cafe in Beverly. A few helpful, cautionary words: - They tend to be heavy-handed with the flavor syrups, so plan your coffee order accordingly. I wouldn't ask for additional sugar unless I were in the throes of a severe hypoglycemic episode. - They have a formidable chalkboard menu that could trigger a panic attack if you suffer from paralyzing indecisiveness. If this is the case, I would recommend grabbing a paper menu and NOT HOLDING UP THE LINE. Some of us just need to get our sexwich on. - They don't take credit cards, but that's okay. I'm sure they would let you pay with pennies if you were that desperate. That is how nice they are. In summary, this place pumps my nads. read more

Such mixed feelings here. On one hand, this is first and foremost a coffee shop, and the coffee is frankly not good at all. You can't put your own cream or sugar in the coffee, so what you get is entirely at the discretion of the grumpy-looking-guy making your coffee. As for me, I got bland tasting coffee with literally none of undertones that make a good cup of coffee with a crap ton of cream and enough sugar to put me in a diabetic coma. Yuck. The woman behind the counter taking my order tried her best to seem sweet, but it came off as that all-too-fake sort of sweet where you can tell she's probably daydreaming about snapping and hurling the customer out the window. I ordered an "iced coffee and a wheat bagel with cream cheese", not aware that I had to specify cream and sugar preferences while ordering. The look and attitude she gave me for not knowing that was astounding. She followed up with "cream and sugar?" - but what she really wanted to say was "cream and sugar, you moron?" Yuck x2. That said, the bagel was really, really good; perhaps a wee bit burnt, but still one of the better bagels I've gotten in the North Shore area. Service was a little slow - I waited a little under 10 minutes for my coffee and bagel, which seemed excessive given that the place was basically empty. Be aware, this place is absolutely CASH ONLY despite not having a sign advertising the fact. I did not know that going in and sure enough I ended up having to run to a nearby ATM. This isn't a deal breaker, but come on, it's 2014 - I can literally pay with my smartphone now, and these guys won't even let me pay with my debit card. So basically - TL;DR - if you like good coffee, go to either Atomic Café or Gusto Café, both a 2 minute walk down the street. If you're after a good bagel, feel free to come on in. But be prepared to wait a while, and make sure you have cash. read more

The muffin was alright, nothing special. I really like the hazelnut Italian soda, but that's not too hard to screw up. They have a sandwich list (and salads I believe), and I would like to go back & try one, to see if they are any good. I didn't really have a problem, aside from the fact that the food was mediocre, except that there were some loudmouthed guys sitting at one of the outside tables. We would come during the week, as well, but it doesn't seem to consistently be open at the stated hours. The food is very, very good. The croissants and bagels are really outstanding. And, they use real eggs (I've seen them crack them) for the egg sandwiches. My favorite so far is the ham, egg and cheese on a croissant. But, I've tried most of the breakfast sandwiches, and think that they are all much, much better than DD. The coffee is good, as well. Generally, I get the standard iced coffee (black), which is great. I have also gotten the Chai (Oregan), which is also very good. They do serve lunch, but I haven't been for that yet. There are a few tables in the store, but it is really a take out place. Call ahead with your order and they'll have it ready for you very quickly.
