Selection of croissants, danish and other delights

Out first culinary stop to kick off our week from Boston to Maine. After an early morning arrival to BOS and no clear plan for the day, we headed up north toward our Maine destination and stopped in Salem. I quickly turned to Yelp for recommendations and immediately pinned this spot as our stop for a caffeinated and pastry jumper start to the day. We limited our appetites to a raspberry pinwheel and blueberry and lemon scone. Very worthwhile, very good. What u enjoyed about these compared to my local pastry fave to Dixboro, Michigan is that they weren't as butter rich. They reminded me more of the pastries enjoyed in Europe. And, they were less money than we get charged here.

A fun place to stop in for lunch. Ordered a chicken salad sandwich on sourdough bread and really enjoyed it. Mind you I rarely eat sandwiches but this one was worth it. I even ordered a black coffee to go with it. Definitely friendly service. We even brought home a baguette for the evening's dinner! It was a good stop in the middle of our jaunt around Salem to see all of the Halloween decor! I definitely recommend (thou I usually eat salad for lunch so that was a bit difficult here).

    Latte with almond milk

Charming coffee shop in downtown Salem. We ordered a latte, drip coffee and a juice. The service was friendly and quick. A lot of variety in their menu as you can see, and a yummy assortment of pastries that sadly we were too full to try!

Almond croissant, chocolate chip banana muffin, and pain au chocolat
    Michele F.

I have been on the lookout for good croissants and was excited to try this place. I got a pain au chocolat, almond croissant and a chocolate chip banana muffin. The pain au chocolat was very dark on the outside, dense (bready as opposed to airy) and had just two small pieces of chocolate inside. The almond croissant was better, but still more bready than a typical croissant. The muffin, though moist and full of chocolate chips, had very little banana flavor. All three items were on the small side, and after the mandatory 14% upcharge, were all pretty pricey and disappointing.

    Iced caramel latte (homemade caramel!)

A&J King is a short walk away from home, and I do not know why I have only been there a few times!! Most recently I visited on the weekend during breakfast time, and it was busy! Service was still pretty quick, waited only 5ish minutes after ordering to get our breakfast sandwich and coffees. Their coffee flavors made in house are phenomenal, I had an iced caramel latte and it was really good. I'll be back soon for some sourdough bread!

    Butterscotch walnut sugar cookie

Went in for jury duty and was released somewhat early so decided I'd walk around Salem and check out the local cafes and bakeries. I brought home blueberry lemon scone, an apricot ginger scone, a feta everything scone and a butterscotch walnut cookie. All were very tasty and the scones had that buttery flavor that we all love in a scone. The cookie tasted just like the butterscotch walnut cookie at Odd Meter?? Same baker perhaps? Butterscotch walnut doesn't seem to be a common flavor. There is a 14% admin fee that is included in all orders and that goes directly to the staff-therefore no need to tip. I personally think this is a very fair policy! And their charge POS system doesn't offer the tip option so you don't have to worry about out tipping twice.

Have you ever ordered a panini where the vegetables are cold, the cheese isn't melted and overall, the sandwich sucks? That's NOT the experience you'll have at A&J's. Sometimes it's a bit heavy on the garlic, and the pickles are a miss for me, but the bread is delicious and the care put into the meals is appreciated.

    Peach tart and large coffee

Went for breakfast. It was very hard choosing what to get because it all looked excellent. We settled on a mini peach tart and smoked salmon on an everything bagel. Both were amazingly delicious. There is indoor seating available, however space is limited. The service was quick and friendly. The coffee is also good!

Super busy cafe/bakery in Salem. There was a line at 10am but it moved fast. There is seating inside but it is cramped and busy. Pretty loud but not too bad. I dropped by wanting to get a loaf of bread but they didn't have any multigrain ones that peaked my interest. The egg sandwich was ok. The bread was not fluffy like brioche that we are used to. There was not much flavor.

Hot (actually lukewarm) chocolate, cappucino, and a flaky proper Kouign-Amann pastry.

Friendly service, mouthwatering sweets and savories, bright modern interior with cozy accents. Lines quickly end up out the door at this tasty little cafe.

    Lemon pastry!

Small but mighty!!! Holy cow.... Ham & cheese was my first pastry, VERY delicious. I bought a few more that are just as tasty. Coffee is on point!!! Go now!!! So yummy.

    Cheddar croissant

Pros: -Loved that almost all staff members were wearing masks, especially during high respiratory virus season in the winter -Delicious, buttery croissants -Solid brownie (rich, but not too rich. Just enough to keep you wanting more) -Tasty lattes This place gets busy for good reason. Most pastries were sold out before noon on a Friday, but everything we tried was good, and the environment is bright and cheery.

Egg and cheese brioche breakfast sammy. Yummy.

My favorite cafe/baker in town. The Sticky bun latte and cinnamon rolls are my favorite. The pastries and sandwiches are reasonably priced.

We were in Salem on the weekend and it was hot so needed beverages. Lulu's has housemade lemonade…read moreand icetea so we tried one of each. Lemonade was delicious and super dense so I actually added some water to extend it and it kept me hydrated all afternoon. We decided to have a snack as well. I got the cheese pizza square which was a little weak and getting dried out since it was around 2pm so that wasn't amazing but my husband had the cinnamon roll and liked the dough. It wasn't overly sweet too which we always appreciate. The staff were all very friendly!

Everything I have ever had there is ok at best, and the prices are exorbitant. My experience is hit-or-miss with the service -- there is one woman who works there who is hostile and insulting, very weird. Other times, the counter staff is just inept (friendly is nice, but friendly and inept is not). They do things like pack savory items with bakery goods and more than once I have opened the bag to find a complete mess from an exploded donut or from icing all over the packaging of a sandwich. Speaking of sandwiches, the bread has been burned on my order more than once and the filling is so skimpy you can barely tell its there. I know we're all shocked at rising food costs but charging $11 for a small sandwich with barefy any filling is not fair. Other local shops are not fleecing customers this way. Do not recommend.
