But as we can't try them all in one visit, we ordered two of the Citrus Blueberry Corn Slices and two Sticky Bun Lattes (iced and hot). Those corn slices I can write home about. Out first culinary stop to kick off our week from Boston to Maine. After an early morning arrival to BOS and no clear plan for the day, we headed up north toward our Maine destination and stopped in Salem. I quickly turned to Yelp for recommendations and immediately pinned this spot as our stop for a caffeinated and pastry jumper start to the day. We limited our appetites to a raspberry pinwheel and blueberry and lemon scone. Very worthwhile, very good. What u enjoyed about these compared to my local pastry fave to Dixboro, Michigan is that they weren't as butter rich. They reminded me more of the pastries enjoyed in Europe. A fun place to stop in for lunch. Ordered a chicken salad sandwich on sourdough bread and really enjoyed it. Mind you I rarely eat sandwiches but this one was worth it. I have been on the lookout for good croissants and was excited to try this place. I got a pain au chocolat, almond croissant and a chocolate chip banana muffin. The pain au chocolat was very dark on the outside, dense (bready as opposed to airy) and had just two small pieces of chocolate inside. The almond croissant was better, but still more bready than a typical croissant. The muffin, though moist and full of chocolate chips, had very little banana flavor. All three items were on the small side, and after the mandatory 14% upcharge, were all pretty pricey and disappointing. read more

A&J King is a short walk away from home, and I do not know why I have only been there a few times!! Most recently I visited on the weekend during breakfast time, and it was busy! Service was still pretty quick, waited only 5ish minutes after ordering to get our breakfast sandwich and coffees. Went in for jury duty and was released somewhat early so decided I'd walk around Salem and check out the local cafes and bakeries. I brought home blueberry lemon scone, an apricot ginger scone, a feta everything scone and a butterscotch walnut cookie. All were very tasty and the scones had that buttery flavor that we all love in a scone. The cookie tasted just like the butterscotch walnut cookie at Odd Meter?? Same baker perhaps? Butterscotch walnut doesn't seem to be a common flavor. There is a 14% admin fee that is included in all orders and that goes directly to the staff-therefore no need to tip. I personally think this is a very fair policy! And their charge POS system doesn't offer the tip option so you don't have to worry about out tipping twice. read more

So this is the third strike for me for coffee. Not sure who is training on cold lattes but there is a certain barista who basically pours hot espresso over ice and mixes milk with the melted water. $9 iced latte that is one sip to the trash. Very disappointing. Please remediate your staff on iced beverages. Hot drinks on ice with no extra ice placed is lukewarm, watered down beverage that is not worth the price. read more

Spent a week in Salem for Halloween and this is one of three places we visited more than once. Had time to kill so we had some hot chocolates and pastries, everything was top notch. The smoke salmon bagels were pretty good. No complaints. The whoopie pie and brownie were good. The lemon danish was a let down. It was almost all dough and no filling. Cute place, not as stylish as some city cafes, but that highlights that the focus is the food not the look. Every single food thing here is phenomenal. They're known for impeccable breads, though coincidentally the pastries are flawless, and the croissants aren't even too "bready". They rotate their selection-- we get about 12-14 items maybe once a month, and every single one is a knockout every time. Their coffee is also very good. The only improvement would be the service. I think there hasn't been a single time I've gone where they've actually gotten our large order right. Most recently, two bacon egg and cheeses were left off the receipt and just never made. This didn't detract from my rating though. The service is still kind and quick and the food quality more than makes up for it. read more

The woman behind me is a regular and suggested the chocolate hazelnut croissant. I love chocolate and hazelnut so I had to try it The layers were so buttery and delicious, I could literally pull the layers apart. The chocolate cream sat in the middle with pieces of hazelnut on top. The chocolate cream was not overly sweet, it was okay, I didn't love it. Their breads looked amazing.
