We stopped by Starr Hill Brewpub in McLean on a very busy day, so I understand the staff was dealing with a full house. That said, the service was just okay. Our order was missed multiple times, and we had to follow up more than once before everything finally made it to the table. As for the food, the burger was okay nothing particularly memorable, but not bad either. The fries were actually the better part of the meal, cooked well and enjoyable. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience, but it also didn't stand out. Hopefully, the service issues were just a result of how busy they were, because with a little more attention to customers, it could be a much better experience. read more

Came here after a concert at Capital One Hall. It's a large pub with two stories. They had live music we enjoyed and had just enough seats for us to sit downstairs. Came on a Friday night while they were playing the game on TV. Love how the bar is facing the screens and first come first serve. The birria tacos are actually pretty good! Came here for a group event - this place is just a few steps walk across from the McLean metro stop. The area seems to be still under development but in the same complex there is also a huge Wegmans and the Watermark hotel. The pub is quite large and spacious and decor is modern - big windows, high ceilings, a long bar and spacious comfortable seating all around. There is a second floor and apparently a rooftop but not open at the time we were there. We had a bunch of apps - nachos, artichoke dips, honey glazed chicken etc, all quite tasty the artichoke dip in particular is a must have. Great venue for group gatherings. read more

Very nice brew pub with excellent beer (at least the ones I tried). Has samples of 3; Murphy's Gold a crisp Lager; Jomo, a Viennna Lager, and Blackbird, which is a Dark IPA, sorta like a tart German dunkel. All three were very tasty, but I went down the middle with Jomo. For food, I had a Steak Sandwich, which was on a very nice roll, with potato salad, that was very well made. Not overly mayonnaised at all. Service was quick, although it was not really busy at the time. I do intend to return there when I get a chance, and will try more foods and beers. read more

The home fries were lukewarm and the Biscuit was a bit dense. The Veggie Sandwich offered during lunch/dinner was quite tasty with a fresh veggies - roasted red pepper and mushroom with arugula and melty cheese with hummus stuffed inside fluffy Ciabatta bread. The flavors blended well together and it was surprisingly the sandwich was easy to eat and didn't fall apart. Hubby enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich. The Mac & Cheese was creamy and cheesy, and on point both at brunch and take-out! Glad I upgraded my side to the Mac & Cheese for the take-out order. The Fried Mac & Cheese Balls and Crispy Cauliflower Bites were both underwhelming and pricey. The Mac & Cheese Arancini balls were very bland and the sauce was the best part. The Crispy Cauliflower Bites didn't taste like tempura, were light breading. The aioli sauce was the best part. They weren't worth the hefty $13 price tag and just get a side of Mac & Cheese! Fries are best eaten at the restaurant - skip them for take-out. They were a bit lukewarm and bland. Stayed at the Watermark Hotel in the same building so had to check out the new (to me) brewpub. It was pretty slow when I stopped in but the bartender was welcoming and attentive. The space is catered more to the office crowd being a good spot for lunch or an after-work happy hour. The beer was exactly what I expect from Starr Hill: decent but nothing to write home about. The food, however really let me down. It was overall really bland. The cauliflower had basically no seasoning and was just a basic flour dredge. The aioli was the saving grace for that. The pretzel was an all around disappointment. You won't convince me the "cheese" was just watered down Velveeta and the mustard was just the basic, fast food yellow kind. The pretzel itself was just a brioche bun in the shape of a pretzel. If you busted that out at an Oktoberfest you'd get your lederhosen card revoked. Go for the beer and to hang with people. First of all, some housekeeping. There are two places here - the Starr Hill Brewpub, which you are reading about. That is indoors and air conditioned. There is also the Starr Hill Biergarten on the rooftop. The Biergarten has a more limited menu, but has live music and stuff. But we won't talk about that because this isn't a Yelp of that and I wasn't there. I was indoors. The Starr Hill Brewpub has a good selection of pub food and beer. I don't drink alcohol, but several people in the group I was with did and liked the beer. I got the Southwest Chicken Sandwich with fries and it was good. A bit of a small sandwich but very filling. The salads are huge, enough for a meal, unless of course you just get a side salad. Burgers are giant and apparently juicy. It was quiet here at 12:30 PM on a Saturday afternoon, we had enough space for our large group of 11, but anything more than that except maybe 12 would have been a problem. The staff here were very friendly and helpful. We were a large group but they worked with us and were patient. But the whole "ladies" first take all the ladies orders first in our large group seemed a bit weird. What is this, the 1950s? We all thought it was weird, even the women. And we're a wide range of ages too, from people in their 30s to people in their 70s. But anyway good food, good beer (supposedly), good staff, and it's got A/C in the summer. You park in the garage next door, it's two hour parking, just be sure to take your ticket. Or if there's a baseball game at the nearby field, you can park there for $5 (in addition to the cost of the game tickets), watch a baseball game, then walk over here afterwards and you won't get towed. I got to try a couple drinks! The ESPRESSO MARTINI was way too sweet, so I didn't really enjoy it. The PINEAPPLE CRUSH was perfect for me -- not too sweet, incredibly fruity and carbonated. Drinks are pretty strong here! We all got a bunch of appetizers and the ones I got to try was not bad. The CHICKEN WINGS were a bit dry but the blue cheese dressing helped. CHICKEN TENDERS with the honey mustard sauce was quite good. The NACHOS were a bit underwhelming, but it had a good amount of cheese and toppings. The HUMMUS PLATTER was alright, nothing special. I am not a huge fan of pickles, but our group really liked the FRIED PICKLES and we got several orders of it. For lunch, I ordered the SURF AND TURF, which is marinated flank steak drizzled with a mushroom based sauce. There is also a generous serving of mac and cheese in between the steak and the jumbo lump crab cake. I thought the steak was fine itself, and not a fan of the mushroom sauce which was way too salty. Also did not like the portobellos that were stir-fried with the steak since they had a weird flavor. I enjoyed the mac and cheese because it wasn't too salty. I was not a fan of the crab cake and didn't enjoy the seasoning or flavor. Overall, the food was just OK. Their drinks are better for sure. Everything here is pretty expensive. Chilli nachos, not something you'd normally go for but they were surprisingly good. Subtle change doesn't hurt, does it? And there's something about a happy hour after work. Everyone caught between their work selves and who they really are beneath the formal attire. But then the ties loosen, the sleeves roll up, and the laughter spills just like the drinks. unsteady, honest, uncontained. It all blends together. The fatigue, the relief, the brief unspoken coexistence, the ease of being known. Maybe that's the thing about change. It starts small, vulnerable, like choosing the chilli nachos, or saying yes to a happy hour, letting loose, and realizing you don't mind the difference at all. Maybe your coworkers, the bartender, the setting sun, maybe they all know something you don't. That change, even the kind that pulls you away, can be kind. We stopped by Starr Hill because I saw they were doing free Christmas cookie decorating, and we figured it was a great reason to try this place out. The brewpub is located (indoors) beside Capitol One Hall. We were able to find free 2 hour parking in a lot nearby on a Saturday. They have two floors, so the day we went they were doing cookie decorating on the second floor and the first floor was being used as normal. After we decorated our cookies, we got a table on the first floor to grab some food and drink. They were very busy, but we were able to get a table in less than 10 minutes. We both got the hot buttered rum drinks, and they were one of the best drinks I have had. We then shared an order of cheese fries which were cheesy and delicious, and had a good amount of toppings. The Biergarten rooftop and outdoor bar area are so fun, especially with live music. It's a great vibe. When we came, it was drizzling and there were no seats in the roofed area. We ate inside at the Starr Hill Brewpub (party of 16). Service was nice but extremely slow- like, bringing 1 water at a time for a party of 16. It took at least 30 minutes to put our food order in, but once it was in, food came out fast. Food was comparable to mediocre ball park food. The steak sandwich and fried chicken sandwiches were dry. The best thing I tried that night were the nachos- delicious. I ordered the fish and chips and enjoyed. This review is for the main street level bar/ restaurant area. Its right next door to the Cap One Theater, so a good place to grab a bite to eat before the show. The dining area isn't that large, but luckily not super crowded when we went. Our server was quite attentive and friendly during the meal. We ordered the fried chicken salad and the sliders to split, and its was more than enough food for the both of us. Both were well made and flavorful, but not necessarily crave-able food. Went in on Father's Day with my wife and two daughters around 3:00 pm. One Bartender, one Wait Staff, one other table with food, and three guys having drinks at the bar. Received water and menus within the first few minutes. Only received food menus, and had to walk up to the bar display to read the beer menu. Bartender never even acknowledged we were there. Waited another 10-15 min at the table to place an order, and finally went back to the bar to order. Still only the three guys having drinks, and the bartender never acknowledged me to place an order after another solid 5-min. Decided to leave. Tonight I went to Starr Hill Brewpub to hear friends who were playing in a band there that night. The place itself is clean and nice, the wait staff was great, and the food and drinks were also great. I DO have to complain about the bouncer who I feel was not doing his job. He was basically sitting by the front door looking at his phone. There was a very drunk woman patron there who kept going up by the stage with a full glass of beer and sloshing it up near the stage and their equipment. The first time it happened, we notified the bouncer who went up to her and told her she needed to keep her full glass of beer at the table, if she wanted to dance. This same thing happened again a 2nd time and she was asked to keep her full beer at her table and away from the stage. The third incident is that she goes up on stage dancing among the band members while they are trying to play with her full beer in hand dancing. This was totally inappropriate and the bouncer came up on stage and brought her off the stage. At this point, I totally feel like the appropriate action for the bouncer would have been to ask her to leave the restaurant at this point, but of course he didn't. 4th incident and this drunk woman again is going up on stage with the band while they are trying to play with her full beer. I don't know if that bouncer was paying attention at this point, as my female friend at this point grabbed her by the arm to take her off the stage. Where is the bouncer at this point? Why is he not doing his job? This was the 4th incident. How many incidents do we need to have before she is asked to leave? It was getting crazy at this point. When we asked the bouncer why he wasn't doing his job and telling her to leave at this point, his answer was that he was the only one bouncer. How many bouncers does it take to ask this drunk woman to leave? It was totally unacceptable and a huge disappointment. This bouncer looked like he was probably a former body builder also, so it was not like the drunk woman was physically bigger or stronger than him. This bouncer was totally not doing the job he was hired to do there. read more
