Just select the one you're there for and pop a squat. This center is easy to get to, as it's right on Stemmons. No pay parking. Great bargain - can't beat that! This is a rink. It has ice on two sheets. People don't care about their jobs here. Who cares about a job at a rink? The ice is solid and that's what I care about. I've seen where the cashier chats it up with friends at the counter and ignores the building line. Happens at just about any retail establishment. While I'm not a Stars fan, I am a fan of hockey and have played it more than half my life. It's a place I would recommend but don't expect any service beyond the level of a McDonald's employee. read more

I showed up to a 2:45-4:45 public session that was advertised as being "indoors". I'm a figure skater and I am currently working on multi-rotational jumps and I couldn't skate because the rink was EXTREMELY small, outdoors and therefore made it impossible to practice. They should have advertised this public session as being outdoors instead of indoors. This experience coupled with the fact that this rink doesn't have any freestyle skating sessions listed shows how much this rink lacks time and support for competitive figure skaters and as a note, hockey games were on BOTH of the rinks at this facility while I was there. If you are a competitive figure skater who wants serious public skating practice or freestyle practice, this rink is not for you. read more

Great hockey experience. We have been at this location for hockey camp. The coaches are wonderful, giving specific feedback. The clinic was set up in stations that changed 5-7 minutes. Each station worked on a different skill. Check in was easy and we were appointed to a specific locker room. There is plenty of room for watching the kids at the rink or upstairs. Parking is plentiful. It's a nice location! We had a mishap with our helmet. The front desk had a set of a small tools I could use to repair the helmet. read more

I want to love this place. I worked five years at an ice rink in the Oklahoma City area, both as a general employee and as a manager. So, I have some experience with how a rink should run. As for the appearance of the rinks and building, it seems very clean. The general employees (people working the register and passing out skates) are as helpful as they can be, even when busy. The rinks seem well maintained. As another reviewer stated, one rink has a much better bleacher arrangement and seating area than the other. This is fine, if one is specifically used for practice ice. My problem(s) with this place is that management does not make good customer service decisions. We put our son in skating lessons a year ago. We tried to contact the woman in charge when there was an issue of the rink being closed with no prior notification to participants of the lessons. We asked for a make up lesson and were basically told no such luck. Last week, we went to the open skating session on Friday afternoon. They had scheduled a private ice event, taking up half of the rink, and very noisy. I was trying to help my two children skate and give advice. But they could not hear me, and I could not hear them over the broom hockey party they had running and the blaring music overhead. My wife and I complained to the girl at the front desk who commiserated, but said there was nothing she could do. She had tried to warn the manager that people would not be happy with that scheduling. And she was right. If you are looking for a place that will take your money and give you a pair of dull blades and half a rink to skate on, then this is the place. Money is the driving factor, with customer service, apparently, no where in the business model. read more

Watching a native Texan trying to ice skate is often very similar to watching a baby giraffe trying to stand up. It's what makes watching the adult hockey leagues rather amusing. What they lack in skill they make up for in the seriousness they bestow upon the game. The nice thing about the Star Center in Farmers Branch is that they have a bar. So you can watch the game with the proper lubrication. When you're ready to draw upon your inner Mike Modano you should check this place out. Sadly I came to late to enjoy the free skating but I was really impressed with how big the facility was, and how clean it looked and fresh it smelled. The ice also looked really clean and well maintained. The girl at the desk as friendly and gave me a schedule so I would know when to come for free skating so I thought that was nice. read more

This is one of the newer Stars Center locations. As such, it's well-kept and offers a great upstairs observation area and bar. As a spectator, I much prefer the climate-controlled comfort of the upstairs. Compared to some of the locations, I do like it much more. This location has LOTS of youth hockey games and tournaments and is fairly centrally located. While the rest of this review is fairly negative, know that this is one of the better places to play hockey in the area. The downsides to the place are: - Bob Gainey rink doesn't have good spectator bleachers. If the upstairs is closed, your options to sit and watch games are very limited. - Snack bar hours can be limited and generally when adult hockey leagues are playing there are no snack options - The upstairs conference area is often rented out on weekend nights and thus the bar and observation areas are closed. This is a big downside for spectators. A side commentary about the adult hockey leagues at the Stars Centers: Adult hockey leagues at the Stars Centers have been a mixed bag. While the new league director seems promising, I've witnessed lots of terrible league management at multiple locations over the past 10+ years in which my husband has played hockey. As an example, the Stars Centers fail to police the leagues for players that are well above the skill levels for that specific league. Just this past summer, in the current D-league summer session, a team that previously played in their B-league was placed in their D-league (2 levels down) to play. Is that very fair? It seems as if the Stars Center management always chooses money over doing the right thing. read more

I had my daughters 5th birthday there yesterday and my family is still so pleased with how wonderful it was. The space is awesome! "Elsa" was our skate instructor and she was so helpful and nice to all of the mini first time ice skaters. Debbie was the party organizer and was more accommodating than what I could have asked. She showed a sincere interest in how I envisioned the party, and ensured that I had everything I needed to make it special. If you are a thinking of skating recreationally, this rink is not great. Actually, its horrible. If I could give it a negative score I would. Firstly, the staff is not very nice or helpful. Skate guards will literally skate past you if you fall and they do not keep a good eye out for the safety of skaters. Only if there is a big crowd of people surrounding an injured person will they come. The manager of the rink I go to (not going to say any names) is very ill-mannered and rude. The first time I attended a public session there, she saw me doing something "against the rules" and yelled at me rudely. An argument started between us after I checked the rules posted at the front desk and realized the rule she spoke of was nowhere to be seen, unlike how she had claimed it was. She then nearly kicked me out of the rink and, even worse, the actual facility for arguing with her. She was simply looking to yell at someone and feel proud for showcasing her power as manager. Disrespectful and dishonest. Also, many coaches I contacted when looking for private lessons didn't respond and basically ignored me. They don't seem too friendly at these rinks. Second, the rinks recently changed up their rules due to the rising number of people participating in public sessions and the increasing occurrences of injuries. They stopped allowing private lessons normally in public sessions, unless in Pro-Time Sessions, whatever those are, where they block off half the ice for like 2 students to have their private lessons. This means students who want to freely practice during public sessions can no longer do so, because it is too crowded to do anything. Basically, if you want to practice, you have to go to freestyle sessions, which are expensive and hard on people who don't have much money but still want to skate. I feel as if all DPSC cares about is making money. Third, the students of the manager/head coach at my rink are very immature and disrespectful. One time, I was skating in the middle circle and showing a friend how to do simple one foot spins. When I looked over, the manager's students were huddling in a circle with her and pointing at me and my friend, laughing and judging. Then shortly after, one of the students interrupted us by doing a very fast combination spin right next to my friend inside the circle we were using, in attempt to show off and prove their superiority. I suspect the manager told them to do so. Overall, there are many meaningless rules in place that restrict what skaters can practice or do and a abnormal amount of rude staff. I would move to another rink, but there aren't any others, other than the DPSC ones. I miss my old rink where there were reasonable rules and nice staff. read more

Horibble pro shop service. The DPSC itself is fine, it's your run-of-the-mill rink. The reason for the 2-star rating is the Pro Shop. The pro shop is run by a 3rd-party, mom-and-pop-style...but they're slow, unreliable, and mostly geared towards the figure-skating community which is fine, but it seems that a shelf full of figure skates with no owners present gets priority over other customers in the shop. The few times I've been here it's been closed, I've been ignored by the woman while she's on the phone, and I've waited more than 45 minutes to get my skates sharpened. The woman has also told me that, despite opening at noon, they don't sharpen skates until 2:00. When I've asked DPSC employees questions about it, I've been told that the shop owners don't really communicate with them either. In 25 years of playing hockey in rinks across the country, I'd be hard-pressed to find worse service in a pro shop. It takes 10 minutes to sharpen skates max, and most places prioritize customers in the shop and not the shelf of skates they have the rest of the day to work on (as, for good reason it seems, it's usually empty). It's a shame because there's not a lot of pro shops on this side of the metroplex, definitely not coming back. read more
