Ogórkowa - dill pickle soup with vegetables and cream (this may be the best soup I've ever had)
    S A.

Food was amazing. I did not know I liked polish cuisine but I love it. I had the ogórkowa (dill pickle soup with vegetable & cream), it might be the best soup I've ever had. We also had the pierogi appetizer mixed items (beef, cabbage & mushroom, cheese & potato). This only came with four, next time we'll get the entré order which has eight ! The saukraut that came with the pierogi was incredible, not harshly sour at all and perfectly tender. For dinner I had the strogonow, strips of beef in a red wine & pepper sauce with mushrooms, two potato pancakes, and a beet salad. It was all perfectly prepared, the beef was tender, the sauce mouthwatering, the potato pancakes (fried mash potatoes is the best I can describe them, soooo goood), and beet salad (yum yum yum). I gave them 4 star only because there was a hiccup in our order, we hit it just at the middle of a shift change and they forgot our drinks, and the entré didn't come out for 45min until we mentioned it to the waiter. But the staff was very apologetic and courteous. Even gave us 15% off the bill. I recommend this restaurant, the food is one of a kind and wonderful.

Stash was the perfect meal in every way. The ambiance was cozy yet lively -- you didn't feel like you were in a library or a beer hall in terms of noise. The tables are relatively close to one another but it still felt private enough that you didn't overhear other's convos. The ambiance is perfect, especially on a snowy night. The drinks are delightful, and our server couldn't have been more attentive or gregarious. The food shouldn't come last in this review because it rivaled the food I had while in Poland, but it really was the whole package that made Stash so wonderful!

I'm Polish, and I can confidently declare that the food from Stash is the BEST Polish food I've ever had! High quality and flavors that feel like home. The menu had everything we were looking for, and we totally loved the vibe of the restaurant! Food arrived pretty quickly considering the restaurant was packed and our reservation was for 8pm. This was my first time in Montreal, but from now on when I come to visit my friend, we'll be making it a tradition to come back!

I was super excited to try this place out as there were a lot of raves for it online. Also this is probably one of the better restaurants in Old Port that is both affordable with good taste. I came as a party of 3 without a reservation on a Thursday night and we waited for around 20 minutes before we were seated which was not bad. - Krokiety - This was actually delicious and one of the best Polish items I've had. The green salad, although looking very plain at first, was actually delicious because the dressing was still warm and had a bit of sweetness that counteracted the leaves's bitterness. Also I was a big fan of the mushroom krokiety as the outside was perfectly breaded and fried with a lot of flavors, and the inside was just heaps of mushrooms. I was a big fan. - Croustade (Apple) - I was a bit disappointed by this dish. I thought the apple dessert would be warm and had a bit more layers to the flavor other than pure apple. I did really enjoy the sweet cream that they had on top which was more yogurt-like. I think more desserts should have yogurt-like creams instead of whipped cream or other sweeter options. Overall great place to eat if you were in Old Port. I will say that I'm not sure if they had a lot of oil in there because everyone in our party felt a bit gassy afterwards.

"A whole lot of friends, first flight from Poland" (Drake and the Weeknd) Our first meal in Montreal was............ in a Polish restaurant! And it was a great one. The Stash Café is a cute restaurant on busy Rue Saint Paul Ouest with colorful red lanterns for lighting and church pews for seating at the window tables. This is real deal Polish food with beet soup, pickle soup, Pierogi, Kielbasa, pickled herring, potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage rolls, and znitzel all over the menu. We ordered the Pierogi appetizer (C$12) - "4 dumplings stuffed with beef OR cheese and potato OR cabbage and mushroom, served with caramelized onions, sauerkraut and sour cream on demand. We decided on the cheese and potato version, and they were excellent. We also went with an order of Sznycel Mielony (C$24) - "two breaded ground pork croquettes, served with a creamy mushroom sauce, potatoes and a choice of salad." The salad was a red cabbage slaw. This was a great dish, with two pretty hefty pork meatballs, two quarter potato spears, a yummy gravy, and a refreshing scoop of red cabbage. The food and service were top notch, and it was a great way to introduce ourselves to Montreal's friendly hospitality. PRO TIP Looking for the restroom? Go through the wood door between the dining room and the bar then up the steep spiral staircase to the next level, and you'll find them.

While spending the evening walking Rue Saint-Paul area in Ouest Montreal we came across Stash and were intrigued by their menu. Some items that looked great to us were the sole, perogies, and stuffed cabbage, so we went in. They were packed, but we were still able to find a table for our small group of three. Service was on point and helpful... Also spoke perfect English. The menu is loaded with many Polish/European delights, so we ordered a little bit of everything. We started with a mix of their pierogies which were pretty darn good, even though the dough was slightly too thick, the stuffing was great and the prep was perfect with diced onions on top. Their home made sauerkraut was incredible and tasted great on their kielbasa. Heir mustard was full of mustard grains and flavor and the combo of that with the saukraut and kielbasa was amazing! I would love that on a sandwich! We really enjoyed the stuffed cabbage, the flavors in the meat inside, which was very tender were excellent and the thin layer of cabbage on top was great. Their home made salads, like the beet and the potato salads were great too. Sole was excellent and served very simply with a side and with sliced almonds on top. Save room for dessert, the apple cobbler was not the traditional style we're used to in the States, but it was very flavorful and tender. It would have been better if slightly heated up and served with ice cream. Highly recommend stopping in here - everything was great!

Stash cafe is located near the Old Port, within old stone walls that really augment the sense of cozy ness and tradition in the place. The wooden tables are sturdy under the cute red shaded lights. The place mats are pretty and cheerful. The menu has all kinds of comforting dishes. We tried the Krokiety and Debutant plates, which were brought to us hot and freshly prepared, along with a small dish of sour cream. I a particularly liked the sweetness of the caramelized onions on the pierogis, and the mushroom-stuffed krokiet. The batters were not too heavy, and flavours were straightforward. Service was kind and quick. Wonderful plate to have a delicious, filling Polish meal!

Absolutely LOVE Stash Cafe! Unfortunately we live too far away to be frequent regulars. We were so impressed the first time we at there, about 10 years ago, that we made sure to make reservations previous to this latest time we travelled to Montreal. Which is saying a lot, because we were only passing through Montreal for one night. So glad we did, because when we got there, they were totally booked. I grew up in a Polish family, and the food is amazing reminding me of my grandmother's home cooking. . The interior is so cute and quaint, including a pianist that plays soft pop music. Lastly, the service was great! Our hostess and waitress were very attentive and friendly. Will be back next time we are in Montreal-hopefully sooner than last time.

For food, this would have been a 5/5 if it wasn't for the horrific service from the host. Seriously, my friend and I had just been talking about how everyone here is so nice and then the host was the single rude person we've encountered the entire time here. Let's start with the good though: food was excellent, and the service from everyone else was solid (although a little chaotic - maybe it's understaffed?). We got the potato and cheese pierogies and truly wished we'd gotten more. If you're telling yourself to get 4, just get 8. You'll regret not getting 8 like we did. We got the placki (potato pancakes) which were also delicious, but I think we'd wished we'd just gotten more pierogies (not because the placki wasn't good but because the pierogies were unreal good). For the main, we split the kielbasa which was EXCELLENT. The sauerkraut & potato salad on the side were great accompaniments, & the sausage was just so tender and well flavored. We finished with a peach crumble - delish. Great meal overall. Here is where I knocked the star down: we arrived at about 7:56, the two of us, with a reservation for 8pm. AFTER us, a party of 4 with an 8pm reservation and a party of like 10 with an 8pm showed up. The host himself was setting the tables alone (very slowly, while laughing and chatting with other employees), & proceeded to set the 10 top and grab all the tables and chairs and silverware etc extremely slowly. Multiple tables, including several two tops opened up - given we arrived first, we could have prioritized quickly setting up the two top so we could get seated but instead made us wait for the 10 top and 4 top to be seated even though once again they showed up AFTER and took substantially longer to set it up. I mentioned it to him like - can we please have our table set up, I can see it's right there and we've been waiting 15 minutes with a reservation in an extremely small space (there's very limited space to wait) with a crowd of 14 behind us. He snapped back rudely that he was working on our table (which seriously would have been the shortest to set up). After a bit more of a wait, he gave us the most backhanded apology - "I'm sorry for the wait, but the other parties were waiting too" in the most snarky way. Like, maybe just say "sorry for the wait?" And consider prioritizing tables based on order of arrival and time to set up. We shouldn't have had to wait for you to grab a bunch of tables and chairs for a party that showed up well after us. Regardless, very tasty meal. Would return for the food and the other employees.

COZY RESTAURANT WITH GOOD FOOD! We came here for dinner on a weekday night, and the place was full! I'm glad we made reservation. We ordered a few typical dishes including Pierogi, Sznycel, and Strogonow. Food quality is generally good, and service is decent. Thus, I'd focus more on the pleasant surprises I had that night: 1. Flaki Soup - it has quite an intense "meaty" aroma, and the beef tripe is very tender. 2. Sledz - the picked herring is well balanced with the apple salad and onion.

    Cheese & Potato Pierogis

What's not to like? Great comfort food, good service, and live piano in the background. We got the mushroom & cabbage and potato & cheese pierogis. The mushroom & cabbage were my favorite of the two and the cabbage on the side was cooked perfectly.

We chose the hot pastrami and it was absolutely the best sandwich I've had in a long time. Just the smell unwrapping it was heavenly. This is not the kind of sandwich where it's all bread and little meat. The meat was piled high. Walked to the shady park a block away from the residential street it corners on with picnic tables and benches to enjoy it- and boy did we! No tables there, but great for carryout business. The deli has lots of other items too. Many items to take home and fix: pierogi choices, good pickles, sausages, and the kind of poppyseed rolls I remember from childhood Polish bakery experiences. Wonderful food makes wonderful memories- also the lady making the sandwiches was a real sweetie. I know there were many items there that I am forgetting- but everyone who passed through while we were there was focused on their sandwiches, like we were. Highly recommend- you'll be back. PS Very reasonable prices for that amount of meat- that's great these days!

A little out of the way from everything else had been doing, but wanted to check out this local institution. So glad I did! Did not expect Zytynsky's being in such an unpretentious brick building, but the magic was all inside. The store had an excellent curated selection of Eastern European gourmet items, all clearly presented with pride. Since I was on vacation, my goal was something to eat that day, but did spend some time looking at all the imported goodies. When I arrived, Angel, the extremely friendly woman behind the counter, was dealing with a couple of familiar faces to her. I overheard that she's been at the store for about 40 years, but I didn't realize that she was the owner and the founder was her grandfather. At my turn to order, I asked her for some suggestions. Ending up with a Smoked Meat Sandwich and a Polish Ham, Hungarian Salami and Cheese Sandwich. Also grabbed two cans of Ukrainian Zero Alcohol Beer. We chatted a little while she prepared my food, and she was absolutely charming. Able to enjoy both sandwiches upon return to my hotel. While for years been a big fan of Hungarian Salami (which was fantastic) the star on that sandwich was the amazing Polish Ham... maybe the best I've ever had! The sensational Smoked Meat Sandwich was perfect! Look forward to my next visit and thank you Angel for my memorable eats! Appreciate your support of Ukraine, too. Zytynsky's Deli is a remarkable place and recommend you check it out! Slava Ukraini!

Oily, crispy and a perfectly melted stringy cheese inside. 8.5/10 - The Blintchiki with cabbage (fried crepes with cabbage stuffed inside) and a side of cream-cheese was extremely good, like some crispy, oily, cabbage roll. It might have been slightly too oily but otherwise great. 4/10 - The Tolma (basically rice-stuffed grape leaves) were not on par at all with the usual Lebanese version. It was very mushy, it fell apart and the spices were odd. 8/10 - The Borscht (beet soup with vegetables) was fantastic, however I personally prefer the version with dumplings inside (i.e. Polish version). It was nonetheless very good and heart warming, however it had a more pronounced vegetable-like flavor than what you'd get from the Polish version. ~/10 - The Khinkali (meat-stuffed dumplings), I'll withhold judgement because I personally don't tolerate meat that's fatty and I also don't tolerate cilantro. However, if you like a more fatty beef stuffed into dumplings with cilantro, that's for you. 8.5/10 - The Chuchkella (walnuts coated by some sweet chewy roux/candy shell), it's extremely good and it's one of those things you could cut up into pieces and snack on them all day long. It's a unique flavor I personally never had before but I could summarize it as sweet-coated walnuts. As for the ambiance, it was very cozy. It has that oldschool classical brown & red decor and the place is very small. Overall, I give it a 8/10. Worth it.

Decor/Ambiance: The primary reason this is a 4 and not 5 star review is because the place is kinda tough on the eyes. It had some odd bright art and the background music was what we could only assume was a Russian pop music video station. Honestly, we ended up finding it charming but it will definitely raise a foodie's skeptical eyebrow. Wait staff: Out waitress was Russian, with a heavy accent and little reticent to suggest our dishes... but she knocked it of the park and beamed with pride over the food. There's really nothing like someone who cares about the place doing the serving. Food: So delicious. We can't speak to it's authenticity (first timers and all), but everything was delicious. I had the Chicken Kiev which came with a unique Georgian plum sauce that could make shoe leather delectable. My husband had a authentic Georgian beef dish (the name escapes me) cooked with garlic, spices and walnuts. It was also unique and delicious! We will definitely return in the event that we are back in Montreal.
