The same tech did all three of my services, which was nice. I'm pretty protective of my nail beds so I only do regular polish ever, but wanted to consider doing a rubber based gel. The staff was very kind in talking me through the options and helping me decide to stick with regular polish. The results was a beautifully shaped manicure, a pedicure to match, and perfectly shaped eyebrows. The interior is nicely decorated, and this is one of those nail shops that serves beverages with a service, so I had a hot ginger tea it was absolutely exactly what I needed and delicious. My only complaint, is that I was not given the advertised Bday discount. The website says there is a 10% birthday discount that never expires. When I asked about a discount at checkout, my nail tech was unaware and very kindly went to inquire. One of her colleagues came over and input a five dollar discount, which was definitely less than 10% of my bill. Overall, the service was great, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the wait was short. I can tell from the careful appointments and layout (as well as the grand opening sign) that this place is newer. Don't let the plaza it's in fool you, it's aesthetically appealingly! As for a basic mani/ pedi, I paid 45 plus tip. I brought my own clear for my nails and chose hot pink for my toes. Their color selection is based off the gel they have to offer. They use the regular from the same set-- which I think is smart and cost effective. I was a little anxious because many of the staff kept coughing-- and Covid is real despite folx acting otherwise. But the staff was masked and so was I. Some of the other clients were not-- which is why I've preferred to go to places that have just one client at a time. Overall, my nails came out good. While I waited, I watched white customers who arrived after Black customers get taken back before us. The moment that pushed me over the edge was watching an older Black woman continue to wait while a white customer walked in and was immediately seated for a pedicure. I spoke up because I refuse to stay silent when I see something that I believe is wrong. I even asked the older woman if she noticed what had happened, and she said she hadn't. I told her not to let anyone make her feel like her time and money don't matter. This experience left me feeling like Black customers were treated as less of a priority, and I find that unacceptable. Whether anyone else agrees or not, that's exactly how I experienced it. Black people, our money has value. Stop spending your hard-earned money where you don't feel respected, appreciated, or prioritized. There are plenty of Black-owned and Black-operated nail salons that deserve our support. Keep your dollars in businesses that value you. I will never spend another dollar at Avalon Nails. If this is how loyal Black customers are treated after years of supporting this business, they can keep it. Respect goes both ways, and so does where I choose to spend my money.
