Incredible place, great food, great people, owner is so contagiously positive and energetic

This was a nice little art gallery that we stumbled on while looking for the cafe - which wasn't open. Not gonna lie, while I'd like to learn more, in the art world, I am the definition of a neophyte, so I can't go into any deep explanations of what I saw, so I'll have to be true to who I am and explain it as I saw it. There were some really nice exhibits, the facility was really clean & quiet, and the security guard at the entrance was very helpful. Even tho this was out of my wheelhouse, I still had a good time. It felt as cultural and artsy as anything I've been to in Baltimore. 4 stars. Next time, hopefully, I can catch the cafe too. read more

This is the cutest, arty spot I've been in lately! Plus the owner was taking orders and such a fabulous host that I felt like I stepped into a version of "Cheers" or something ova hea! I ordered a egg and turkey sandwich on bagel and a corn waffle with eggs. Everything was made to order and piping hot! I didn't eat the sandwich but it disappeared quickly w no complaints! I really enjoyed the corn waffle, but my scrambled eggs had cheese that I didn't ask for. A lot of u would appreciate that- but me and dairy are friendemies! Thier prices are insanely low compared to other spots! I think this is a great place to come in on a regular bases and rub elbows w local cool folks and artists. read more

Cute little breakfast spot gem tucked into the North Ave fabric. A spunky fun little place with great early bird energy and music. LGBTQ vibe for all and a queer eye for the straight guy like me. I had the corn bread waffle and home fries. Very rich and tasty. They could use thicker bacon but service was fun and friendly. I was having a good ole 'Long Island' craving for a 'bacon, egg & cheese' sandwich. You know, the kind from the corner deli made on a greasy grill. I didn't want the MD quasi-version w/ some Canadian Bacon or brioche toast BS. Nah!!!!! I want the sandwich to be ooey gooey cheesy goodness w/ that taste of butter in the background, marrying perfectly w/ the egg & bacon goodness... **Ahhhhh, I really miss home sometimes. I digress** (lol) I remembered seeing this cafe while running errands and decided to give it a try. I haven't had it yet... But I'm very hopeful! Why's that, u ask? Well, I had the serendipitous pleasure of bumping into a friend that I hadn't seen in many many years and she insisted I try a piece of her 'Cronut' (croissant/ donut hybrid)... Result? YUMMMMMM!!! So, I think that's a good sign. Additionally, both Kevin & Bill introduced themselves which I thought was very cool. Additionally, the decor is quite artistic with cool paintings & metal sculptures from local artists lining the walls outside & within the cafe. While it is a tight space (it's located within a row home-styled building), there is ample seating that receives EXCELLENT natural light. Stay tuned! UPDATE: Home Run!!!! This sandwich was fantastic! If you have ever had a conversation with me that lasted longer than a minute then you are well aware that I loves me some breakfast!! I often like to find places that have either really good french toast, really good bacon or really good waffles.. This place came up when I did a search for waffles. When I pulled up to the restaurant i first thought my GPS dropped me off in the wrong place.. Then I saw a small A frame sign with the restaurant name on it. The location was a little off putting and looked dare I say a little dingy from the outside. I figured hey, I was here no turning back now.. Since it was pretty early in the day I was able to get street parking right in front without a problem, so I paid for my parking and went right in.. Walking in was interesting, its a dark hallway and an unmarked door.. Ordering process was simple, the guys working were nice but nothing more than good morning and how can i help you.. Since I opted for take out I got a chance to admire some of the artwork around the place as I waited on my meal. As far as the food, the waffle was good but they didn't top it the way I was expecting based on the photos ive seen here. The eggs were decent and the bacon was by far not my favorite.. it was a little limp and chewier than I like. Over all its just OK, not a place I could see myself going out of my way to go back to but from what I gather its a local business by a local Baltimorean and I can always support that! Three-man operation of AWESOMENESS. WHY I WENT THERE: - Moved to the neighborhood and exploring the morning munchy options WHAT I LOVED: - Egg & Cheese on Rye. Simple, fresh. perfect. - Friends got the waffle (looked AMAZING) and the quiche got top reviews from a frequent quiche-eater! - SUPER FRIENDLY service - when you walk in to the airy, lovely upstairs cafe, you see friendly faces behind the counter and you can see the whole (tiny) kitchen - everything clean and MOVING. WHAT I LEARNED THE HARD WAY: - Parking can be a real beast. - Closed on Sundays - I'd go, "whaaa?!" except that that seems to be the one day the guys who run the joint take off - so I say, enjoy yer Sunday ;D definitely looking forward to becoming a regular at this joint! read more

Love Love Love! Love the food. Love the service. Love it all. I enjoyed the ginger and lemon tea garnished with fresh mint. And I guess I've grown accustomed to a small mug of hot water and a little packet with a tea bag, because I actually had to ask, "Is this mine?" Behind that counter they brew yummy goodness that one just couldn't pick up in the tea aisle of [insert trendy natural foods store that I frequent here]. I actually smelled the ginger and saw them pick the mint! I ordered the Belgian waffle with bacon and as soon as I ordered it, I thought, "Who orders a Belgian waffle at a coffee shop?" And truthfully it didn't seem like the type of place that one would expect to find well made Belgian waffles. Just goes to show you "seeming" isn't believing. ;) And that Kevin... up to his old amazing coffee owner tricks. So I'm here in Baltimore staying with my buddy Ben, and for breakfast this morning he says he's taking us to this awesome hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We're hungover as shit so breakfast (and coffee) sounds amazing. "Yes, please!" we say. As we pull up in front of the cafe, my first thought is, holy crap, why is this next door to the world's most ghetto, bombed-out building? Oh right--this is Baltimore. It adds charm. Okay, up the stairs we go. Inside, the decor is warm and colorful, with art scattered on the walls, new and old newspapers and magazines laid out for your reading pleasure, and a handful of obvious locals seated all around. Ben leads us into the back where we are greeted by the world's most precious sassy gay black man. I love you!! GET IN MY POCKET! (I refrain from saying this out loud.) He takes our order, serves up some adorable banter, and gives us mugs for "bottomless" coffee. Yes. Yes. I really love you. (The coffee, by the way, is fresh, delicious, and never-ending. There's also simple syrup available at the serve-yourself coffee station--bonus points.) The food here, to be fair, is not mind-blowing. It's no Meatball Shop. It doesn't give me multiple orgasms. BUT--it is tasty. It is home-cooked by a friendly old dude who will call you sugar. It is covered in butter. It is a lot more things I also like. And it is served, most importantly, by an adorable sassy gay black man with an awesome African tunic and a mini-mohawk. You will want to put him in your pocket. The service is decent. The regulars are friendly. The prices are ridiculous(ly low). The staff is unfairly adorable. read more

I wish I could give this place 3 separate ratings: one for the customer service, one for the food and one for the place itself. Because of the lack of cleanliness, the rating was greatly reduced. As for the customer service, it was stellar! I really loved how welcomed I felt by the owners! They are very personable. The food was pretty good. Artwork adorns the walls. My sons and I were able to choose and talk about which pieces were our favorites while we waited for our food. I think my disgust with the uncleanliness of the restaurant is what made it difficult for me to rate this place higher. If it were cleaner, I would give it 4 stars. SNAC is just the cutest little cafe. It's the kind of place where all of the employees are genuinely appreciative of your business and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and at home. It's filled with natural light, art along the walls, and smiling faces. What's not to like? I only wish they had more vegan options. I went with a veggie sandwich sans provolone and it was good but if you've had one veggie you've pretty much had them all. My dining companions raved about their celery soup and quiche though and the iced ginger lemon tea was aces. The cornbread is more like cake, sweet and heavy on the vanilla and absolutely ginormous; definitely make sure to give it a try. If you're looking for a solid breakfast spot that won't be too crowded and offers good food for cheap then SNAC is a great option. read more

Yes, this place still open. It occurred to me when I went this past weekend that the first time I went on a Saturday that I arrived around 8 and they don't open until 10. I love the homey feel in this place. You go in walk up to the small counter, order your food, take a seat and either Kevin or his partner will bring your food out to you. It seems to me that there were only 3 employees, Downtown Kevin, his partner and the cook...more welcoming that way. I really felt as if I were visiting their home; literally. Kevin also gave me the back story on everything. He and his partner has been together for 24 years and opened SNAC 10 years ago in addition to another cafe around the corner but the name escapes me right now. Onto the food. The buttermilk waffle is truly buttermilkish (is that a word?) reminds me of my grandma's. The bacon was fried crispy to perfection. My friend got the French toast which looked really good and sweet to me. And the coffee was piping hot unlike other restaurants. But most importantly the price. $16 for 2 meals and 2 coffees....winning:) good luck getting that deal somewhere else. Definitely will be making this my new favorite weekend breakfast place. I love how Kevin made it his business to introduce himself and ask our names. He's so eclectic and such a ball of fun...literally. He had on a disco ball jacket lol. When we were leaving he chased us down to say goodbye and take a picture with us. How cool is that from an owner. Also want to mention that I didn't get the potatoes but the woman in front of me saw that the potatoes were on the menu for that day and she started jumping up and down with joy. Really great little cafe to stop into for a quick bite to eat. The service is unbeatable; the staff are so friendly and helpful! The art on the walls is all by local artists and for sale. The quiche was the best I've ever eaten (spinach and swiss) and the coffee is bottomless. They also have free reading material you can borrow while you eat. I will say as two minor cons - that section of charles street is one way and parking can be pretty awful (metered street parking that fills up fast) and the food can tend towards the expensive side. While I've enjoyed most everything I've eaten there (as an exception I was not a big fan of the bland bread pudding), I wouldn't want anyone to think this is a cheap little cafe. Definitely a quirky and quiet place to escape the city atmosphere. read more

I'm a DC transplant and I am always on the hunt for a lunch spot on my telework days while at home in Baltimore. I stopped by SNAC this afternoon and dove right in to Chef Bill's lunch special, pulled BBQ pork sandwich. My folks are from NC, so I know good BBQ when I taste it. Though is was slightly sweeter than what I'm use to, it was sooooo delicious... Just enough vinegar and red pepper spice to balance it all out. All that yumminess was piled on a toasted kaiser bun and topped with some of the best coleslaw I've ever had! The staff's hospitality was totally on point. From the front of the house, to the kitchen, to the other patrons in the cafe, it felt like everyone knew everybody, and it was quite refreshing. I'm not going to lie, the outside of this place was kind of scratchy but once you walk inside you are in awe with all the amazing arts that fills the store. The food was great and very affordable. I ordered the broccoli and cheese quiche and OMG that thing was amazing. What was even better was that it's was about $5. The owners are supper friendly. They were starting conversation and joking. They're interaction with the other guest was amazing you could tell they took time to get to know the people of the community. I will def recommend this place again. read more

Came here for breakfast with 6 friends after an awesome wedding the night before. There's limited seating, but we were lucky to get two tables. It's homey, and everyone is very welcoming. The food was spectacular. I got the snac stack... it's like a McGriddle except 20 times more delicious. When we found out our Bolt Bus was going to be 90 minutes late, we discovered this gem of a cafe to spend the time. We were warmly greeted by a very friendly man (the owner? Manager?). He was truly delightful, and it was an unexpected treat. My husband had oatmeal, which was not of the instant variety, and it was delicious. I ordered a slice of spinach/Swiss quiche. It came not quite heated enough, and when I asked that afore-mentioned man if he could heat it up, he apologized profusely. The quiche came out fully heated and he even threw in a small plate of sliced fruit to make up for it. It was totally not necessary, but very much appreciated. I love ANY place that has a gracious person greeting you at the door. Kevin Brown serves up a hearty down home breakfast with a smile. I'm a sucker for a tasty Belgium waffle and this was just what I desired. Plus the massive hot chocolate made me want to go wrap up in a good book and nod off. My dining guests also had spinach quiche, french toast and even scrapple. The artwork on the walls offers tons of talking points. I had only been a customer twice before Kevin, one of the owners, began calling me by name. Bill, in the kitchen, really knows his stuff! All of the guys who work there are super friendly and passionate about what they do. The prices are reasonable as well. One time I was there with a friend and Kevin came over to our table when we were finished with our meal and offered us giant, warm homemade cookies on the house to finish off our meal. How nice! The coffee is great and fresh always. The corn bread is unique and gigantic. It will feed 2 or more people. The pulled pork is to die for. Honestly, this place hurts my waistline ;) I have also tried a couple of their homemade soups and all of them are good. Actually, I have never eaten anything there I did not like. They also support the local arts and regularly rotate new artists on the walls. There really is a sense of community and togetherness in this place thanks to all of the hard working men here. All of the food is homemade with simple yet tasty ingredients. If you cannot afford to go to the Woodberry, go here instead. We loved this place. Kevin and his boyfriend have truly created a warm, welcoming space that feels more like someone's home than a business. My mom, my husband and I came before checking out Artscape. Kevin welcomed us and made a fuss of my mom, she was so flattered. The food was great; the pancakes were top 5 in a restaurant ever. They had a cut up watermelon special and it was perfect, every piece was fresh. We loved the art, the atmosphere and the food. We'll definitely be back. read more

I decided to go here for breakfast as I had a late morning train and some time. What a great place. I was greeted by the owner with a smile and "thank you for coming in". The food was incredible and ridiculously affordable. I got the hot corn bread, sausage and oatmeal. It is a sausage patty, a HUGE piece of warm cornbread and an ample bowl of oatmeal that you can get with any extra fixings. That and a coffee only came to over $6! Are you kidding me? Where can you have good quality food for that price? The owner then came up and chatted a bit with me. I loved the atmosphere, the friendly nature of the employees and the air of community that this place was infused with. Not that I get to Baltimore very often but if I do get back there, I will definitely make a stop here! read more

My wife had the fence roast platter and I had a breakfast sandwich using pancakes as the bread. Excellent homemade pound cake, as well. It was the closest breakfast spot within walking distance of where we were staying, so the group took a stroll down Charles St to this cute little spot. Being from the South, I had to order the bowl of grits which was to my surprise a tub full of grits and butter. I suppose for some that is a turnoff but the Southerner in me was happier than a hog in the mud! I added on some toast - THEY OFFER PUMPERNICKEL - and a slice of broccoli and cheese quiche. Normally quiche is very eggy and it's rare to find one full of whatever additions are supposed to be in there, but not this slice. There was an overload of broccoli and just enough cheese that made for one happy tummy. Beyond the great food at incredible prices, the service was friendly and the owner nice and helpful to us first-timers. I was also impressed with the art and the vibe of the place; it truly felt like a unique experience that a chain just can't provide. While I can't say I'd be back a lot only due to living hundreds of miles away on a daily basis, my kind hosts seem to think they'll become regulars. Hard to imagine why they wouldn't! The menu may be small, but I don't think a menu has to be incredibly extensive - in fact, that could lead to lower quality on the food. By keeping it simple, this place has found a way to do what they do best and serve it well. A+. read more

I'm a bit shocked this has 4.5 stars. This isn't your urban sheek, brick interior Baltimore dive. I'm throwing it in the uniquely grungy category. BUT the staff is super friendly and inviting. The eggs were dry and lacked flavor. The potato homies should have been called potato mushies. Go with the S.N.A.C Stack. VERY good and unhealthy which rules. No alcohol here so I wouldn't suggest for your Sunday Funday starter. read more

I went for breakfast one Saturday morning and based off the reviews i thought this place would be pack! It was the exact opposite. Still I was super hungry and wanted to find a breakfast spot away from the busyness of fells and fed hill. It sits on the 2nd floor of a building, you walk in and have to enter another door before you're in the restaurant. As you can imagine there are some fantastic paintings and artistic flair to the place. Fun, energetic atmosphere with friendly staff. Economical survivor breakfast that offers tasteful food that you can get for the low! I ordered the Belgian waffle with bacon and OJ. The Belgian waffle was made with a rich flavorful batter which was great. Not so great is the bacon looked like a frail arm of an elderly woman, there was no meat! My colleague ordered their catering for a meeting in our office. I could not believe how delicious the veggie panini was. Awesomeness. Often, a veggie sandwich is soggy and gross. Not the case here. The bread is a delectable foccacia. The veggie filling is not mushy. The vidalia onion dressing was just right. We also had a dessert plate - the chocolate cake was very good even a few days later. I went to the cafe for a second helping but they did not have foccacia - boo. I had the veggie sandwich which was nice and fresh tasting, but I definitely prefer the panini. Also snagged a tasty donut with chocolate frosting and peanuts. The fellow behind the counter had me try his ginger lemon tea, which was a nice sip as I waited. Warm welcome, very friendly owners.
