Stay Gallery is one of few places to observe new artwork in my hometown, Downey, CA. Thanks to the COVID-19 quarantine, the gallery is entirely virtual at https://staygallery.org/ . The May 2020 installment titled "Human" is a really special treat as there is a cool interactive way to view the artwork as though you were standing in the gallery. Plus each artist has an info tab where they discuss their pieces in their own words. I am loving it! They have weird hours so I have missed quite a bit, but the exhibits that I've been to were enjoyable plus the staff is friendly and eager to share their knowledge of the artwork. This non-profit gallery, though small in size, is big on love for its community and budding artists, often working with Downey Unified School District as well as the PTA "Reflections" program. Most recently there was a "Water is Life" exhibition where Downey elementary students showed off their pizza box (provided by Pina Pizza House also in Downey) mosaic artworks. There was a panel of experts from the Greater L.A. area that discussed water conservation. Cool stuff. I highly suggest that you visit the "Human" exhibition. Read the instructions for viewing (i.e. swiping, dragging, clicking or tapping on "Info" etc.) for the best experience. Enjoy! PS - The one thing I would like to suggest is... my husband was born deaf and would most likely appreciate closed captioning on the video "REBIRTH"... or at least please consider it in the future so that he and other hearing-impaired individuals can enjoy it too. This art gallery does a great job of collaborating with the local schools and small businesses to contribute to the revamping of their small downtown Downey location. There is no particular age group that they cater to; everyone is welcome! In their efforts to raise funds, they bring a wealth of cultural events and activities not limited to the gallery itself. The owner/manager was extremely rude and sarcastic when I called about the live band he had in the parking lot facing our apt bldg. I informed him that I had called the police because the live band noise level was loud and that I had children trying to sleep. The man said he had a permit and why did I call him if I had already called the police. At that point I hung up and the loud band continued. read more

To say the city is what it is because of the stay gallery is a joke all it is a old building with poorly painted walls and nothing to be proud of and funny thing is they call advertising to promote a restaurant with the pictures that will go on the walls art is a joke anyone who think the place is cool needs to get a life seriously. read more

I went today for the Paint and Cookie event with my 2 daughters and 2 friends and their daughters. The event was suppose to take place from 10:00 -12:00. I'll start first by saying the event was advertised as having cookies and milk. One cookie was offered and no milk was offered or any other beverage so after your cookie you will sit there the rest of time thirsty (unless you brought your own drink). The event was supposed to start at 10:00 but the organizers were still setting up therefore the painting did not get underway until 10:30. Once the painting started, Ed, the one running the painting lesson, was conducting the lesson so fast that I, a 48 year old women could barely keep much less small children. This was suppose to be an event for kids right? Why the big hurry? The event started at 10:30 and concluded by 11:30. The 2 hours that was advertised that would be given to paint our picture was cut down to barely an hour. In addition to that, the paint brushes were in horrible condition. They were old, dry, and the bristles where all spread out making nearly impossible to paint a straight line. Instead of it being a relaxing, fun experience, it was stressful due to the fact we forced to move so fast. We won't be coming back. read more
