I tried exploring at home gentle yoga videos but was fearful of pushing myself past my limitations which could result in an ER visit. I did my yoga session at Spirit Space Yoga as I felt I would have trouble relaxing in my own home. Hannah had all the supplies ready for me and the room was clean, quiet, and zen. I immediately felt at home at Spirit Space Yoga and was very comfortable opening up to Hannah. Hannah is wonderful and has a calm, nurturing, knowledgeable presence. She calmly and patiently listened to my limitations, goals, hopes, dreams, and fears. She led me through a wonderful private session that made me feel alive and hopeful again. Hannah was able to design a session that worked on my goals of strength, flexibility, and relaxation in a full body workout without over-exerting my arm where I have a PICC line placed. I felt respected and safe throughout my whole session. I have to admit when the actual yoga started I felt a bit odd being the only student but Hannah reassured me that the feeling would quickly pass, and it did. I had practiced at another studio but was not comfortable there. I first went to Nirvana when my daughter had broken her foot during a dance competition. Since she couldn't dance for a while I thought yoga would be good for her. It seemed like a nice mother-daughter thing to do. At my first class, I fell in love with the practice, and Ruth Anne, who was my first teacher there. The experience was calming and felt really good in my body. I enjoyed it so much I have been back nearly every day since then. Ruth Anne made me and my daughter felt comfortable and reassured. She said that if there was anything we didn't want to do it was ok. She gave very good and specific instructions. I felt that there was always safety in mind. I was able to reach a point of relaxation that I hadn't experienced before. I appreciate the variety of postures formats offered at the studio. The difficulty level always seems just right for me. Often I will go to class and it seems that Ruth Anne knows exactly what I need that day. All this led me to want to learn more so I decided to take the Nirvana teacher training and become a yoga teacher. That experience was life-changing. It allowed me to feel more comfortable with my own practice and to be able to share how good I felt through the practices of yoga and meditation in hopes that others will experience their own wonderful practice of yoga. Attended the Tuesday night…read moreLevel 1 class, a bit apprehensively since I'm dealing with many injuries, arthritis, muscle imbalances, and other physical limitations and this is for ""seasoned beginner and intermediate students." Kim was subbing and she was EXCEPTIONAL. I took her through my body stuff, explained that I had experience with Iyengar style from the last few years, as well as a 8-year long yoga practice. The class was small which meant each student got personalized attention for their bodies. The other two students were regulars and Kim seamlessly incorporated specific instructions for each of them into her teaching, and then helped me make adjustments. It was the perfect balance of accepting me where I was and pushing me outside my comfort zone. And damn was I sore today, in all the right places! Will definitely be back to this great little community the next time I'm in town.

Working with Angela is great, she will challenge me but at the same time keep in mind my limitations in my knee due to a previous injury. I feel so wonderful the next day after her class. Even after the first class I noticed a big difference. The studio is clean, spacious and Angela is just so fun to be around. She makes it fun to be stretched into different positions.

I wrote a review about Shiva Shakti a couple years ago when I first arrived in Northampton. And in…read moremy review I just projected my frustrations alllll over Shiva Shakti for literally no reason. I decided to delete it and rewrite one now that the studio has reopened its doors post-pandemic. Shiva Shakti instructs in the Baptiste style of yoga. It isn't my favorite type, but I've still really enjoyed taking classes here! Lots of chatarungas, lots of flowing, toss in some core work and tons of sweat. That's what you'll find at Shiva Shakti. You will work your BUTT OFF! *cash (or check) only. If you forget, there are at least 3 ATMs within a 3 min walk. *fill your water bottle up at home! There's nowhere to refill your bottle at the studio. *no showers, but there are changing rooms! *class times are limited due of the size of the town, but they still offer enough to fit anyone's schedule. There are 3x classes/day during the week, 1x Saturday, and 1x on Sunday (2x in fall thru spring). *my favorite teacher is Matt, for no major reason that I can pinpoint. He has a really welcoming vibe, and he can coax hard work out of you without being overwhelming. He also pays close attention to students on their mats and is great at remembering everyone's name. *Brandon is a fun and intense teacher- he has this super thick Boston accent and is always engaging the students during class to keep us on our toes and present in the room. And he will absolutely crank the heat up on you with no regrets! Haha *Naima leads a really delightful class. There's something about her voice that feeds you strength in a posture while simultaneously being really soothing. She's also really good at remembering students names which I so so appreciate. Some big positives at this studio: -The heat and humidity is DOPE AF. It gets steamy in the studio, and I love it! -The teachers know when to send in the cool air and it is always much appreciated. -The floor has mat markers that are color coded according to where the warmest/coolest places are in the room, so it's easy to ensure that you'll get the exact level of warmth you want. -They have a student discount! It's not huge, but it brings the drop-in class rate to $15 and monthly unlimited to $120/mo. Overall: I highly recommend this studio. I'm glad it's here in NoHo. And I'm so thankful that Naima and Brandon keep this place running and offer such delicious heat/humidity and fun classes for all of us.

When I offered to discuss this with them they declined. This is not trauma informed care and opens them to a potential lawsuit for discrimination against people with disabilities covered by the ADA.
