Northampton Athletic Club is an outstanding choice with a wide variety of equipment (freeweights, Cybex, TRX, Peloton, rock climbing wall, pickleball, basketball) and a wealth of regular classes (Zumba, Pilates, yoga, spin, boot camp, strength). Personal trainers are also available. Locally owned and managed, the NAC staff is friendly and helpful, and the facility is kept in great condition. It's easy to make friends here, so you can integrate your social and physical fitness. I come to this gym every time I visit my sister in Massachusetts and the service is always great. It's a decent sized gym, not too big, not too small. They have everything you need. The equipments are a bit older, but considering the membership price, it's not too shabby. They have a separate room for different workout classes. The gym is divided into two levels. As a person who's been a gym member (at different gyms in California, in San Francisco & Newport Beach) for the past 10 yrs, active outdoors, & has a need for self-care through physical exercise + exercise community, I love NAC. **Note: I've only attended classes, i.e. not used the machines, & only been a member for 6 mos. Check back again in 6 mos. for the update. **Classes: P90X & P90X Tabata, Step, Hatha Yoga, Boot Camp, Vinyasa Yoga, Flexible Strength, HIIT & Sculpt! P90X + P90X & Step: my mainstays. As my body changes & the seasons heat up/cool down, the classes warm-ups, cool downs, teacher knowledge & attention to modifications (for the many different body types in class), transitions to the different movements/combo's keep me flexible & strong! Same for Hatha! The body needs to be worked in different ways, for health maint., so I play around w/ Boot Camp, HIIT & Sculpt, Flexible Strength, & Vinyasa Yoga. Health maintenance is easier with this circuit! **Instructors: will go above & beyond; helpful, knowledgeable, considerate, fun, & encouraging. It's hard to go wrong when most of the teachers take an evident pride in doing what they do -well- keeping the range of students in mind. **Bathrooms: in comparison to other gyms I've seen, are *clean* **Staff: the staff I encounter regularly are friendly & helpful. **Amenities: sauna & steam rooms in each of their 2 locker rooms, water bottle filling station, towels & lockers for members. Indoor pool @ Amherst location only. **Members: other class attendees are incredibly supportive & encouraging! You can find a health community if that is a priority. **DO: arrive early to class if you're a first timer. The teachers'll have time to orient you!!! Northampton Athletic Club is hands down the best gym in Western Ma. Staff is friendly, Trainers are supportive, Members are like family. A wide variety of equipment to use and multiple cardio machines so there is hardly ever a wait. I love the sauna and steam room. 100% worth a visit. read more

PROS -- Personalized TV on the cardio machines. I know this shouldn't matter, but somehow it just gets me to gym more when I know I can watch trash television on Bravo at the end of a long day at work. And the 30 minutes flies by. For me, the worst part of the cardio experience in most gyms is having to avoid the display TVs that ironically seem to be perpetually on the Food Network Channel (doesn't this seem counter-intuitive?), golf or fox news. I'm still scarred from an entire month of having CNN's coverage of MH370 on the TV every day at my previous gym. As much as you put music on and stare straight ahead, you can't not see the 700th simulation of the plane crash. --Membership comes with locker check-out and towels, which is certainly not the case for more budget gyms. --They just did some updating in the front room with weight equipment. There is generally a good selection of equipment, dumb- and kettlebells, etc, across the gym. -- Staff has been competent and professional in my experience. -- I haven't been to any classes, but they do seem to offer a good array and a climbing wall --They recently turned the cafe over to a private business that does bagel sandwiches until something like 2 or 3 in the afternoon. While I don't go here often, I do see gym goers walking in and out. They had fairly good customer service and the food is decent. They offered to do a scooped bagel (where they scoop out the interior of the bagel to cut down on calories) for my sandwich. CONS -- Weekend closing hours at 7pm. This is quite annoying. -- The women's locker rooms could stand for some renovation. Because I don't do the full shower and change, this isn't as big a deal for me, but I can see this as a deal-breaker for a pickier person in route to work. -- Better system for cleaning the machines between users. The gym has these gross towels with spray bottle sitting about that you are supposed to use, but I always feel like I'm just wiping everyone's conglomerated sweat all over my machine. Have been a member for about 6 months. was forced to relocate here after Leading Edge in Amherst screwed up and went under. I tried every gym between Amherst and Northampton and decided on NAC as its close to home and added to a family membership for $30 a month. The Good: its big so weights, machines and cardio equipment is readily available even during peak hours. Many classes are also available. The Bad: locker rooms are the worst design ive seen, cramped with constant naked bodies (whhyyy!!! cant you change pants then your shirt instead of getting stark naked, roam around for abit then come back and put on clothes!!!!) the 2 level of weights just makes things confusing to judge where to lift and then have to move to the first floor anyways because the 2nd only goes to 50lbs. The stretching rooms are a joke! more like a tiny box of BO. Staff are hit and miss depending on who is there. No guest passes???? instead $12 for a day, who can get a $12 workout in?? Basketball court and rock wall are a plus, but alot 15 and under kids are in these areas. read more

I was a member for one full year when I moved here. Price much less than YMCA with hesitation joining my third year starting Jan 2020, I mistakenly did (should have joined the Y all along) When COVID hit, they did not honor 4 months of lost time!!!!! as in... your membership still ends in Jan 2021! after no gym access from March to July!!!!! but b/c I was a renewing member, they would give me 6 weeks extra: WHAT!!!!! HAVE YOU ever heard of such a thing. Every gym including the Y allowed members to leave with a rebate for unused time (they refused when I requested that) or at least gave them back the time lost (4 months). So I paid $500 plus change for 2 months of gym access! Now I am a member of the Y. I will probably not go back here. The only reason they get 2 stars and not one is b/c pre COVID, they had a good free towel service and they have a lot of readily available equipment including peleton bikes. read more

I was a member here for several years when I lived in Western Mass and have yet to find a club as good in the other areas of the country I have lived in since. This is a good sized club, with friendly and respectful staff and members. The membership price is very reasonable and includes locks and towel service. They do not have a pool but they have a rock wall which is even better. You can get a membership that is just the rock wall, just the gym or both which is nice so that you are not paying for stuff you will never use. The locker rooms are a bit too small, but they do have both a sauna and a steam room which is really nice after a hard workout. The only downsides to this gym are the too small locker area, sometimes the temperature is too warm and the little cafe area. Sometimes they are cooking food in the cafe area and it can really make you feel sick to your stomach when you are working out and you smell cooking. I hope they eventually realize that this is completely unnecessary. Overall a highly recommended good club especially for the price point, I wish they were here in CA where I live now. read more

This is a really great gym with an awesome staff. Always super clean. They provide towels to shower and locks for lockers which makes it so easy to use. Equipment is always well taken care of too and their children's play area is an AMAZING deal (plus the play area is superb and your kids will love to play in the tubes, tunnels and slide). Just a step above the local Y. When I first visited to inquire about membership, the front desk staff member dryly handed me a class schedule and ask "So, do you wanna join?". No tour. No break down of membership options. Nothing. When I requested a tour of the facility, he was more polite and took time to answer my questions. Other staff I've encountered so far have been more polite. If you're an avid cyclist/spinner (like myself) you'll be disappointed by the cycling room. It is small, cramped, and the stationary bikes are positioned in a square so all members are facing each other during the workout. Awkward! Not to mention that the bikes are quite out dated and a bit rickety. The rest of the facility is quite large and well equipped. The cardio machines and weights seem more modern and well-kept than the stationary bikes in the spin room. The locker rooms are clean, but not aesthetically pleasing. The locker room and entire gym gets a moldy, sweaty stench at time. In all, not the worst gym I've ever been to. But the best I've found in Northampton so far. Just wish they would update the cycling room! read more

Gorgeously designed space...I literally feel like I'm in a music video everytime I work out there. Plenty of stuff to pick up and push around. Indoor bball court, rockwall, sauna, steam room. Lot's of classes, except all 4-5 of the yoga classes disappoint me ...but I'm a Bikram guy, so I'm spoiled. Staff are hit and miss friendly. Wifi is better but still spotty. TV's in the cardio room need an upgrade. Locker room is an afterthought, but towels and locker lock are nice. New bagel joint is good for carbing up after your workout...wait, isn't that bad? read more

I have been a member for a few weeks now. The classes are wonderful and the instructors have been very welcoming to me. I have never done any classes before so it is nice to feel like I can ask some questions and not feel out of place. The locker rooms are small but clean and I am always able to get a locker. The trainers are fantastic. You get two free sessions when you join, but most people don't use them. I used mine and now have a great new free weight workout for both upper and lower body. I would recommend NOHOAC to everyone. read more

Very good place overall - been a member for several years. Equipment is in good working order, the staff are awesome and they have gone out of their way to make this a welcoming place over all. If you've ever been intimidated by walking into a gym I don't think you will be by this place. Rock wall is good, weights are fine, cardio is good with tvs on all of them. A couple of recommendations to improve: (1) although the place gets vacuumed daily, and the staff does a good job with that, but the entire place really needs to be scrubbed down every month with mops and steam cleaners, focusing on washing the carpets, waxing floors, and getting all the built up stuff off of the equipment and stuff that can't be picked up by vacuuming alone. professional cleaners are needed for this. with monthly fees at $45-$50/month, this place really should be spotless, especially when there is a food service in the facility. (2) so much equipment is in the place - it's starting to get overcrowded. time to expand? think about what is not used anymore? (3) replace treads on the treadmills more often and check the balancing. (4) sponsor more local nonprofit activities like 5ks or other stuff like that. Again, overall, NAC is a good place, and glad it's in the town. read more

I've been a very satisfied member since 2000. The staff are tops. I tend to avoid congested so cannot comment on a crowded locker room.

This club is good, the only problem is Internet conection really poor or no internet connection, no excuse to have poor wifi conection when most people need it read more

One of the personal trainers seems to think it's appropriate to sip a coffee while he's working out his clients. Totally unprofessional. Today there was a pair of dirty boots up on the table rubbing up against the towels we are supposed to use. When I told the girl who was working there how gross it was, she laughed, and an hour later, the boots were still there. Totally disgusting. Nobody wipes down the machines after they use them, and the young staff really doesn't care. The machine fix-it guy stinks of cigarettes, and always seems to be next to a machine I'm using. I don't want to smell cigarette stank when I'm working out. And the naked people who roam around are just plain pervs, but that's not the club's fault. read more

Best gym in the area! It offers the best prices for the best amenities. There is also a small daycare for kids of members (they look over the kiddies while you are working out). My only complaint is that it closes too early during the weekends (7pm). Other than that, fantastic staff and great workout environment. Will miss the NAC! read more
