I'm ***punching the air*** for not reading these reviews before going here. I got suckered in by the billboard advertising Beef Tallow fries after not eating Steak n Shake since my high school days in North Florida... sweet, sweet nostalgia. BOYYY was I sadly jolted awake from any nostalgic dream I had once I arrived on the scene of this "fast food" crime. The crime itself is that it's simply not fast food... like, at all. When my husband and I pulled up we saw the mildly full drive-thru line and ignorantly thought it'd be easier to just go inside. WRONG WRONG WRONG. We ordered around 9:30PM at the kiosk and did not get our measly order of two burgers and two fries until 10:30PM. I'm fuming just thinking about the absurdity of that. As others have noted, they prioritize drive-thru orders which makes absolutely NO sense. It is a horrible business practice that leads to having less than 2 stars on Yelp lol. What makes it worse is that there is a literal wall between you and the staff, so the concept of customer accountability is completely nonexistent. Kindly notice how most of the higher reviews are from YEARS ago. This company has recently overhauled their customer experience by making it completely self-serve if you dine-in. The only person trying to address any of the chaos in the dingy dining room was a damn security guard, who was honestly just saying anything to make justifiably angry customers calm down but not actually following through on much. The TWO security guards they have to hire at night are surely a result of the vast amount of customers they piss off with horrible wait times, nonexistent customer service, and absolutely abysmal dining conditions. I was scared to sit down anywhere as there was a visible film on EVERYTHING, especially the floor. EEEEYUCK! The burger was good and the fries delicious but you will most certainly be angrily eating your meal. And don't even get me started on that glorified water that they call tea.... PASS. read more

Unfortunately, it seems the moment they shifted away from human employees and towards robots and order screens, they became incapable of fulfilling an order correctly. What was once my favorite restaurant has quickly become the biggest disappointment in my life. I miss the days of going to Steak 'n Shake after ballet class with my mom, chatting with the new friends we made who worked at the restaurant, and devouring a burger and fries or some chili mac cooked to perfection without a single flaw. Now, walking into this Steak 'n Shake is a dystopian experience where you can only expect one thing to be reliable: YOUR ORDER WILL BE WRONG. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have trained the robots or order screens in customer service, so what will be done to remedy your incorrect order? Absolutely nothing. Have you accepted your fate of receiving a fundamentally incorrect order? That's great, but unfortunately, even the incorrect orders come out cold with soggy fries and congealed cheese alongside a fully melted milkshake. If the robots hadn't already killed the nostalgia, the complete and utter disregard for quality did. Do you like the idea of an attempt at nostalgic, 1950s diner decor while exclusively engaging with robots? This is the spot for you! Do you like not being able to get a drink because you have to scan a barcode with a scanner that rarely works? You'll love it here! Are you a fan of the societal shift away from human interaction? Support this restaurant! Do you like that robots are taking jobs from humans? Hit up Steak 'n Shake! I really don't understand all of the bad reviews here. We eat here about once a month. The past year we have had great service. They have two cooks that are great. Maybe we get good service because they recognize us. This past visit this last week we noticed a new employee, Launa. She is really keeping the place spotless. And she is as nice as can be. We always order the same, Single Steakburger, no cheese, no catchup, light on the mustard, fries and soda. Perfect every time. Once we had to get the fries done over and that is it. The fries are even better now they are being cooked in Beef Fat. They are awesome. Will return soon. read more

The place was filthy! Tables dirty, counters dirty. My hamburger was cold (the cheese was still cold!). The staff were not professional (cursing, including F bomb by several employees). The ice dispenser was not working properly. I'll never eat there again. read more

My friend and I were sorely disappointment when our pick up order not only took an additional 15 minutes but was also incredibly wrong. We only found out after opening ours meals at home and by that point, there was no point of turning around. Even so, the burgers were still decent even if they weren't right. Granted, we did see they were slammed with a high volume so I imagine the staff were doing the best they could. Would like to try to give them another shot in the future. read more

I sincerely hope management reads this review: First, I NEVER have an issue with the food here. It always tastes great. Though, at times, depending on the wait, the fries are no longer hot when I get them (more about that below). My low rating is solely because the night shift, on every night I've ever picked up food from inside, struggled mightily. There appears to be a lot of young people without any leadership during the night shift. They are usually polite and not arguing back with customers who are very angry and vocal about the super long wait times due to obvious staffing shortage. But, this is still not an excuse for the poor service. 1) It is obvious they prioritize the drive thru orders over pickup/inside orders. Every person inside (over 10 ppl) waited at least 35 mins for their food when I was there a couple days ago. Even those who simply had a milkshake. 2) No one is ever at the counter to receive customers. You have to yell "excuse me" to a worker you see walking from the back to be recognized and have your order accounted for. 3) Even after that, nobody follows up with you about your order, because everyone is in the back and focusing on Drive Thru orders. 4) This neglect of the dining room also means there are no straws, ice, napkins, condiments or beverages in the machines at times. The dining room even looks neglected. 5) There needs to be a supervisor delegating tasks. Someone assigned to the drive thru and someone assigned to the dining room, at least. I have witnessed dining room customers get very agitated with the staff after waiting over 35 mins with no food or updates about the food. This has looked like making demands for a refund (completely understandable) to yelling at staff on the microphone that's out front. I imagine this also makes for a poor working environment as well. read more

1 Star -- Serious Health Concern (April 11, 2026 @ 11:20 PM) I visited this Steak 'n Shake location late on April 11, 2026, and what I witnessed was unacceptable and honestly a public health concern. There were multiple food safety violations happening in real time: * Employees wearing gloves but touching doors, counters, and their hair, then immediately handling food without changing gloves * Cross-contamination throughout the kitchen area * Employees playing around while preparing food, not taking food safety seriously * Visible lack of sanitation standards On top of that, there was NO manager on duty, so there was no accountability or supervision. Orders were also incorrect, which further shows how poorly this location is being run. This was not just "bad service" -- this felt unsanitary and unsafe. If this is what customers can see, I can only imagine what's happening behind the scenes. I strongly recommend that anyone considering eating here think twice and pay close attention to how your food is handled. This location needs an immediate health inspection. I will also be reporting this to the local health department. read more

This has got to be the worst food experience I've ever had honestly. I ordered a kids hotdog with fries and a milkshake and a grilled cheese with fries TO GO. It took 30 minutes for them to bring out the milkshake. Which is insane to do if you aren't going to bring out the rest of the order for another 20 minutes. The milkshake was just milk by the time the rest came out. yes, 50 minutes to get what I think is a pretty easy order. It was late and they were busy. I've worked in the food service industry. I know it's not necessarily something the workers can control. But 50 minutes without a word from any employee is kinda crazy. The fries were fine. The hotdog was cold. The grilled cheese was so cold that the cheese had fully solidified again. The top piece of bread was toasted separately I guess??? It wasn't even stuck to the cheese. But the grand finale, folks. I went here on Tuesday 11/12/2024. I haven't been to a location in years. I got something simple since I didn't eat at work. I got the 3 chicken tenders with honey mustard. I think Steak and Shake has really lost what made it special. There's no human element anymore. You walk up, place your order on a kiosk, pay with a credit card, and it even has the nerve to ask for a tip. When the food is ready, you pick it up from the window, eat it, and then clean your own table. Why would they need a tip for that? On top of it all, they missed several items we ordered. Several employees had earbuds in and clearly didn't want to be there. One was even out in the lobby, grabbed a cup, and started drinking from the soda fountain. The Trio Rankings Rating: 9 Sam: my burger was fantastic perfectly cooked with delicious flavor. The beef tallow fries were new to me and I was underwhelmed by the flavor. That's not the restaurants fault though. The fries themselves were cooked well and had great texture. The chocolate shake was HUGE but it didn't really taste like chocolate. The price was fantastic and all of the waiters and staff were so kind and helpful. Great spot to go. Rating: 7 Owen: I had the Oreo milkshake and it was definitely delicious to say the least. And it was giant. And it was cheap. Overall a good milkshake and can't complain, but really it's not the best milkshake I've ever had, and can't expect that from a fast food restaurant. Rating: 9 Charlie: This fast food experience was truly lovely. Genuinely good food and a great atmosphere. The burger was scrumptious and the Oreo shake was delectable. I personally wasn't a fan of the 100% beef tallow fries but they didn't hinder my enjoyment of the meal. Also the portions are good for the price for about 12 bucks I got a burger fries and a pretty sizable shake. Used to be a fun and yummy place to eat. I waited over 40 minutes for a simple burger, fries, and drink. I ordered my food at 2:11 pm. The receipt in the bag indicates the burger and fries were completed at 2:41. At 2:53, my name was called, and I was handed my order. The Burger was not even room temperature. The cheese didn't even melt. I used to eat here or via the drive-through at least twice a month. The lady who ordered before me had the same wait. This is NOT acceptable. Well that sucked. No wonder this chain is dying. With so many good options at toco hills why did I visit Steak and Shake? Well i used to really like this place and they used to be very reasonably priced. I liked their skinny fries and I liked their chili even though it tastes canned. When I walked in the door at 6 pm on a Thursday there were two other people sitting down eating. Both were employees. That should have been a warning. They have eliminated cashiers completely. You have to either order off the app or a kiosk. No customer service. No help. I ordered a burger fries and a soda. It was just over $8. Then I waited. After 15 minutes I wandered over to the kitchen until I could find an employee. He asked if I had a to go order I said just a regular order. He disappeared into the back area and a few minutes later emerged with a bag. My fries were cold and floppy. The one thing I was looking forward to was hot crispy skinny fries. No such luck. The burger was also cold. Apparently my order has been sitting by the drive through window for a while why I waited at the pick up counter in the store. The mix on the soda machine was off. They don't have self service drinks. There is a machine but you have to scan your receipt before it will dispense. My drink came from the back and the syrup mix was off and it tasted terrible. Went in the trash with the rest of my meal. Big mistake. I won't be back. Not to this location. It's a shame like I said they used to be good. Maybe the shakes still are. read more

Loved the self checkin kiosk. No need to haggle with associates at the register. Use if the kiosk was easy and self explanatory. There were 4 kiosk so need for waiting in lines. The location was very clean. Our beverages were ready first then our food was ready shortly afterwards. The shakes were served thick and delicious. The food was served hot. Made the huge mistake of bringing my family here on a quiet Sunday night. Dirty and run down, service is hardly existent as the workers don't have to do anything except bring food out on trays. They shout names while auctioning off orders to tables and many are incorrect. Nothing is in stock, no ice, no napkins, sticky tables, trash all over the floors. Service is EXTREMELY slow and the drive thru line takes precedence over in house diners. They also hide in the bathrooms to scroll through their phones while customers wait over an hour for their meals. Don't waste your time or money. I am a S/S fan - love the food at this N Druid Hills location - but hate the new Kiosks - I understand maybe not can find people to work but the Kiosks suck. No doubt. The floors are ALWAYS slippery due to grease probably from re-used mops and more than likely you have to clean your own tables. Tonight, the person supposed to be cleaning couldn't stay off her phone. Staff management was friendly but not "managing". Cooks were doing a good job, again food was good. I give it 4 stars, would be a 5 if it had been a little warmer. The rest gets a 2/3. But will go back for sure. G read more

This place DEFINITELY has a new management that cares. And a new staff. My party and I were treated and served nicely and efficiently. The onion rings were cold and we waited 15 min for our order but to tell you the truth, it's still such a big HUGE difference from the last time I came that I didn't mind.
