WOW!! Just WOW!!! Walked in to place order to go....4 ordering stations open. No one but me in there. I press the button to start.... First one...second one...third one....fourth one..... None worked. A kid behind the counter said tap it several times..... I said I already did. I know how to work one of these. So another came out and fiddles and got one up and running. Placed order to go and there was a request to tip!!!! WHY???? This was to go and there was no special service that required it... All employees are already paid full min wage plus. Service is no longer a thing at Steak 'n Shake which is fine I have no problem with it being a typical fast food restaurant. However if I have to order pay and pick up my food you do not get to ask me to tip. The food was okay typical Steak 'n Shake but why do I need to scan a receipt to get my drink and only get half a drink. I'm from out of town and miss Steak n Shake. Went for dinner and was extremely disappointed. I ordered at the kiosk and paid $12.02 for a single hamburger, cheese fries, cup of chili, and a soft drink. There were only about 3 tables with people seated. 80% of the tables were dirty. My food came out in good time. They call your name, and you pick it up. No employees in sight when I picked up. I didn't received crackers for my chili. I waited, no one came. I decided to go back up for crackers later. I ate my burger and fries, and headed back up for crackers. No one around. I waited again, and waited, and waited. I called for the people in the back room. No response. Finally I decided to take 2 steps toward the back room door, which was slightly behind the counter. A manger, named Jacob, immediately reprimanded me for being behind the counter. I asked for crackers. He said, we'll get them and headed back to the back room. I told him I had been back twice, didn't get crackers when I got my food because there was no one to ask. He again said, we'll get to them. At this point I was done with this man. I asked for a refund for my chili since I couldn't get crackers. He stepped back out of the back room, reached into a container under the counter and gave me the crackers and then said, "when you leave today, don't ever come back." Im a 66 year old lady, who for the first time ever, have been thrown out of a restaurant! There was another party who had just gotten seated and saw this happen. I wish I could give this place a review lower than 1 star. The bathrooms were disgusting, the tiles and ground were turning black. The staff have no positive attitudes, one of the girls gave attitude when asked to wipe a table and a guy was yelling "damn it" in the back and getting frustrated. You have to order through the kiosk and the whole place looks filthy. The adult combos are basically the same size as the kids combos. We got our kids shake and one of them was served with a low amount of shake and the table wasn't wiped down, shown from the picture. Paid extra for the 99 cent grilled onion but was disappointed since it's cold and grimy. Took off all the veggies from the burger since they were gross and not fresh. The grill looked nasty and everything was disorganized. One soda machine side wasn't allowed to be used and you had to scan a QR code for even fill your cup. Me and my family went up here for dinner today. Disappointed is an understatement. Well I'm already disappointed with steak n shake as a whole for removing my favorite burger off the menu. First it was the jamaican jerk but now the jalapeño crunch is gone too ‍ well we get there, my grandpa orders a salad which is shown on their menu online. They tell us they don't serve salads anymore. Well take it off the menu then! I ordered a butter burger with swiss cheese instead of american and they gave me a sandwich with no cheese at all. When we drove back around they took my sandwich, and picked it apart with their bare hands to tell me it did have cheese I just had to look between the buns. As you can see there was no cheese on my sandwich. And then they just gave it back to me which by this point it's cold now so I had to reheat it to even eat it. We got in the drive thru at 11:20pm and got to the window at 11:45pm, the website said they closed at midnight yet refused to take our order when we still had 15 minutes till official closing time. A staple here in the Midwest, it remains one of the busier dining establishments in the Greater Peoria area. While Steak and Shake was started in Normal...the 2nd Steak and Shake was placed here alongside the Illinois River. The original SS in East Peoria sat about 100 yards from the current SS. A few years ago they tore down the originalEast Peoria SS and built this one. Most every SS is uniform in shape and size, but this is the largest SS! It features over twice the dining space as ordinary SS's. When the weather is nice out this SS features outside dining with a great overlooking view of the Illinois River If you have never been to a SS, it is kinda closest to diner fare. Very good burgers made in plain site on a large flat grill. Milkshakes made from real hard ice cream and some of the best chili this side of Cincinnati. Of course that's most peoples opinion. The food here is average for a SS. I've had pretty good luck with the service. Just depends on the time of night. Being they are open 24/7 and right across the river from downtown Peoria, it can get real busy between 12-3am. Overall I like this particular SS and it stands out as being a bit different from most other SS's you may encounter. read more

I've come to this steak and shake several times and it has recently declined severely. They always seem to be understaffed or have staff standing around, sometimes on phones. My friends and I received food poisoning from the chicken strips which seemed undercooked, and although running a fast food restaurant is stressful; we barely saw our server and she seemed unhappy. The service is prompt, friendly, and pretty attentive. The shakes are the real thing, and the chain has been experimenting with product diversification to see if they can stir up interest in some new varieties (Butterfingers shake pretty tasty, Snickers shake much less successful, two-toned shakes okay depending on your choice of flavors. Hard to suck those Butterfinger chunks up the straw). The chain has also switched to an approach where they are selling the bundle of the double steakburger with fries plus one side, perhaps to make things easier than having the customer pick two sides (takes too long? too confusing for the average customer? More profit on the bundle with the fries included? You can discern the MBA's hand at work). They've also been promoting 4 meals cheaper than $4, which suggests that they're hurting from the recession or are targeting the customer who isn't spending quite so much on eating out this year. Still, the product is pretty high quality. I'm glad they're all non-smoking now, and I'm doubly glad that they brought back the little glass jars of pepper sauce. The East Peoria location of this chain has a great big parking lot, which is a nice feature (though often quite busy at lunchtime), and the building itself is newish, having supplanted an old one a couple of yards down. Nice views of the barges going up or downriver, if you get the window tables. If you don't get a window table, lunchtime is good for people-watching of the East Peorian species, though if you're obviously an out-of-towner (as I am) they'll stare right back at you. For no particular reason there's always a horde of house flies buzzing around in one corner of the room (the northeast), which is worth avoiding. This place is great! I came to the area for a sports tournament and I can't even count how many times my teammates and I came here to eat. Sometimes we'd get a full meal - burger, shake, fries and all - and sometimes we'd just order a shake. Either way, the food was outstanding. They bring out your food pretty quickly. The fries and burgers are good, but my personal favorite were the shakes. Every flavor that I ordered was awesome. Especially after a long day playing ball out on the field, the shakes were the perfect ice cream-y treat to end the day. The overall atmosphere of this place is pretty cool, too. It's casual and it was a great place to just hang out while drinking a shake. Another thing that's nice is that, at least when I went here, they were open pretty late. This place is gross. My wife and I took our 3 toddlers here a couple weekends back for lunch. You walk in and the first thing that you notice is how dirty the floors are. They are so greasy that you almost slide as you walk. Once we were seated I continued to noticed the floors and under other table. It was really bad. Our waitress was nice but did not seem too bright. We ordered a few kids meals, my wife got a apple / chicken salad and I got some sort of bacon lovers steak burger. When our food came out she brought my wife a side salad. Seriously...She apologized when we asked her about it and she took it back and brought back some grilled chicken salad. It still was not correct but it was not worth the fight so my wife ate it. My "Bacon Lovers" burger, however is another story. I take the bun off to throw on some mustard and the "bacon" that was on there was (in total) the size of a quarter. I am not sure what happened here but they shriveled up so small that you would not have even known they were on there. The patty's appeared to have broken apart in the cooking process and they pieced a whole bunch of small pieces together to make my burger. It was not appealing to look at. In the middle of me getting this my son had to use the restroom. I took him in the men's room and let me tell you after this experience, my new rule is to check out a restaurant restroom before I eat there. This was disgusting! The greasy floor problem continued in the restroom and actually got a lot worse. There was a garbage can over flowing, 2 of the three stalls had been "used" and left unflushed. If it was just me I would have not even used the room. But since it was a 3 year old, you don't have much options. We used the last stall. He finished and wanted to wash his hands. The sinks were so dirty I would not even let him touch them. We skipped the hand washing that day. I went back to the table and after the bathroom experience I decided I could not bring myself to eat that burger. I asked our waitress to take it back, because it looked nothing like what I ordered. The manager came over and I explained all of this to her. She offered to make me a new burger or a milkshake and I declined. I honestly question the sanitary practices of all the staff there. I asked if I could speak to a manager I just wanted two things of extra crackers she went back and young man came out screaming and cussing at us because we asked for two things of crackers.
