There were two gentlemen cooking and a young lady in the drive-thru. We stood at the counter for 7 minutes and not one employee acknowledged us. They looked over and didn't say a word. This my first time at this or any steak and shake but it will nit be my last. Everybody and I do mean everybody there is so nice and courteous. Not at all what I was expecting. Out server ,Shane, was extremely nice and helpful and offered suggestions off the menu etc. when he found out it was my first time he also highly recommended the milk shakes. This is a fast food place so lets not compare it too Ditka,s etc. it is fast food and it taste like fast food. But the service was unlike anything you typically get at regular fast food joints. As an example when we were checking out the cashier was temporarily missing ( my guess is she was in the bathroom-haha). The line cook seeing us waiting got involved in alerting the front staff to find the cashier,Shane our server as well as another server went to the rear of the facility looking for her as well. Point is that these people did not take the attitude that " not my job". Very impressed with the staff. Way above and beyond what one would expect at a fast food establishment and service that is expected and not necessarily found at high end restaurants. Very caring and genuine staff for sure. Originally they were out of Coke. We asked for a substitute but the manager, who says her name is Jen, was extremely rude. We asked for a refund on our meal (which wasn't made yet) she said we are NOT getting a refund and we can just leave. We have been regular customers here for over 20 years and have not been so humiliated before. She says she is the manager for the surrounding area and if we make a complaint, it'll only go to her and nothing will be done. She was extremely unprofessional. read more

And always get some excuse as to why....this isn't my first time here but I like to give the benefit of the doubt before posting a negative review. For example, they seem to always be out of fresh strawberries or bananas for shakes yet they are "famous for had spun shakes" yet they rarely ever have what is needed to make them. And if you go late at night, expect an even longer wait because there is always an excuse for that as well. It's funny that they "request a tip" when you use your card at check out.....lol ..... PROS: It is near the mall. The pricing is fair. The mini corn dogs are good. The Juicebox available for the kids is good. The mint Oreo shake is good. The service was friendly in the drive-through. CONS: I did not get the ranch for the corn dogs. The cheeseburger was not hot. Room temperature would describe it best. I did not eat that because I am pregnant. The fries were OK but a little soggy. And finally, I ordered a mint chocolate shake, not a mint Oreo shake. Well the mint Oreo option was taste year, I would've liked to have known what I was getting. read more

I was in Steak and Shake today 07/06/2019 to order food. First I was in the drive through line for 20 minutes, so I decided to pull up and walk-in. I placed my order as I was leaving, one of the cooks- a white male with all white on and a puffy chef hat, WITH GLOVES pushed down the trash in the trash can and was about to continue serving food with THOSE SAME GLOVES until he realized I had my eyes locked on him. He jumped back and took the gloves off and went to drink water and was staring me down. Needless to say I will never return here after what I just experienced. It was so unsanitary. Normally I like Steak N Shake but we came in one day around 11 p.m. for a late dinner and the place was a mess. Every table was covered in old food. We waited for about 20 minutes to be seated (which should have been our first and second hint to go somewhere else to eat). After being seated we waited for another 15 minutes for our waitress. When she came to take our order she flat out told us "It's been busy here and I don't really care. I'll go to everything when I get to it. I'm not moving faster than a turtle today, I just don't feel like it today." It took 49 minutes to get our food, and when we did get it we were missing a cheeseburger and fries. It took another 23 minutes to get that. I asked our waitress 4 times for a cup of ranch sauce and never gotten it. While we were waiting we saw two other tables get up and leave because it took too long to get service. I've been to this Steak & Shake a number of times. I've used my two most recent visits last week to rate them. One visit was for breakfast and another for a late lunch. Our breakfast was fairly disappointing with the only good thing we ate was pancakes. For an extensive menu I would think there would be more consistency and a qualified breakfast cook. Service wasn't too bad and we were in and out in about 40 minutes. Our lunch experience was trouble from the start. Even though there was a clear line of customers waiting to be seated and we asked if they were taking names (rude response of "No!?!") only one of the waitresses was seating customers and she would point to a random person in line and say "how many?" Then seating the party at a dirty table not yet cleaned from the previous customers. Truly unprofessional. It took forever for our waitress to show up and tables seated after us had ordered drinks and food so I went to find a manager. The manager was running the drive thru and quickly asked where we were seated and said "OK" as she turned and walked away. No "sorry" and she never checked back on our situation. I don't know what it was her job to manage but she clearly wasn't managing a thing in the dining room or paying attention to the lines of people waiting to be seated or those waiting to pay at the register. Our food was awful. My chili was actually cold, watery, and the cheese never melted. When I mentioned this to our waitress she said she'd take it off the bill. As the chili was my substituted item in place of fries we only saw a $.70 cent savings. She never offered to replace it with a hot one or offer one to go. Others at the table had an overcooked but cold Frisco melt, warm but greatly undercooked fries, and cold onion rings. The service was so slow I did see one set of customers leave after waiting too long for their food (they left without paying for their drinks or complaining) and our total time in the restaurant was a long hour and twenty minutes. The restroom was fairly clean on both visits and the entrance and parking lot were clean on also. At this point I'm not sure I'll bother getting off the expressway and visit this Steak & Shake again. There are others we pass on our road trips that have been much better than this one. read more

Get the Heath Shake!! You'll thank me later! I prefer the "steak burger" from Steak and Shake over almost every other burger joint. The burgers tend to be less greasy and sloppy than other places. I love the mushroom and swiss burger the most! Fresh mushrooms are the difference maker! The only downside to the Steak and Shake experience is the extra wait time as a result of "made to order". But this is not really a downside as that is why the food is always fresh. Their shakes are killer! Heath is my favorite! The Chili is very good, I like mine a bit more watery, but the taste is spot on! Definitely at the top of the list for fast food/burger joints as far as I'm concerned. Took my son out to eat tonight. Needed a quick meal because we had plans tonight. Store 210 in Joliet, Illinois. I ordered the Chili Mac Supreme, the dish came out overflowing with noodles and all the fixings but ONE issue. There was a teaspoon full of chili in the actual dish. I asked the girl to maybe add a bit more, she did and the manager told her to tell me it would be extra. Now I've eaten this dish dozens of times because it is what I enjoy and I've never had issue with the amount of Chili they put on it until today. "Meh" about says it all. Went to Steak 'n Shake for the first time in about 5 years (needless to say I wasn't impressed in the past....). It was the same deal--a bit dingy, mediocre food, and sort of slow. It does look like they tried to up their game from old saltless fries to offering a variety of different spices that can be added, as well as expanding their combos with a big $4 meal menu. But, even with all that, it was pretty lackluster. I will say our server, Alex, was pretty good. Got everything right and got things out as quickly as the restaurants pace allowed. I tried to get drive-thru here last night. I say "tried" because someone said they'd take my order and then disappeared for a good 5 minutes or more. I said "hello..." a few times into the intercom to no response. I thought the clerks might have been pranking me, but then someone eventually took my order. I pulled around and saw two cars in front of me. One got their food and left and the next one pulled up to the window. They got one bag of food (only part of their order) and at least 10 minutes went by, probably closer to 15. I finally got annoyed and pulled out of line, without receiving my order. I drove up to the Chick-fil-A in Bolingbrook, where I was in and out of their drive-thru in under 2 minutes, happily gobbling my chicken nuggets. I get that Steak n' Shake probably isn't recruiting from Stanford these days, but is it too much to expect even a modicum of competency here? Chick-fil-A seems to think so. I, then, noticed FOUR tables STILL had food and plates and were not cleaned off. Are you kidding me? This place is horrible! 10 minutes sitting at the speaker after someone says "One moment please", after I place my order for 2 milkshakes, I pull up to the window, wait another 10 minutes to even PAY then my order isn't even done yet!
