Well, Steak 'n Shake has gone the McDonald's and In-and-Out directions. You order from a kiosk, take a seat anywhere and wait for them to call your name or number. You pick up your order from the counter. However, our food was still the quality I grew up with. Steakburger was good (although it seemed a little thinner than in the past), cheesy fries were yum and the Nutella shake - excellent. This site was clean and the staff seemed that they were connected to customer service, particularly the manager who (I think) was making the shakes. It seemed like they had a good flow of customers. Glad we stopped here - always stop at a Steak 'n Shake when we travel in the this area. read more

I have eaten here before when it was rated a one star restaurant and I just stopped eating here. I only stopped here this time because I was in a hurry and just didn't care. I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!!! The restaurant has upgraded!!! The restaurant was clean! The food was hot. Saturday 23rd at 12;:45 pm my family of three went to dine in at this restaurant. We were in the process of ordering from the kiosk when we were told fairly loudly "We are no longer taking orders. We are short handed and there is a back log of orders". So we walked out and went to Wendy's next door. The thing is- we were in no hurry at all; finding a way to kill some time until the balloon festival at 6pm. No table service available. The seating area was blocked off with beverage service inaccessible. Self service kiosks for ordering and payment. Kiosks not very user friendly. Especially if getting a combo meal. There's no option to enter your soft drink choice. Every type of shake is listed though. Nothing too crazy with this location, it was clean, everything was done with kiosks when it came to ordering which I like. Service was good, they forgot my wife's drink with her order, someone got it quick no questions or fuss. Food was regular Steak n Shake, we both got combos, didn't take pictures because it looked just like we figured :) it's connected to a Thornton's gas station that has E85 so it's a good stopping point on trips for us. read more

My "how the mighty have fallen." We visited here on a Friday night at 7:00 and a few years ago there would've been no way you could get a table without waiting. Fast forward to 2024 and Steak n' Shake is a shadow of its former self. Extremely streamlined menu, no table service, no counter service, no real plates and flatware. That is the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is that I remember how it used to be. But - they are just trying to survive. Burgers and fries were good - as were the milk shakes (but no malt flavoring anymore!) We could've gotten away for about $10 for two but we had to have the milkshakes - add another $10 for two. For West Coasters, this is the Midwest's version of In N Out Burger, except better! It's a sit down diner with wait staff, amazing shakes and malts, and that old fashioned diner feel. The burgers are fresh and hot- about same patty size as In N Out. They also serve a little something called Chili Mac. If you've ever had Skyline Cincinnati Chili over noodles, Chili Mac is very similar with just a slightly different chili flavor. It's great on a cold day, or on any day for that matter. Service was fast, to the point, and accurate. Food was hot, delicious, and fresh. Every location I've been to has been extremely consistent in the food quality and taste. Don't pass this one up- give it a shot if you're near one. read more

Food was good when we finally got it. 45 minutes for two burgers and fries. Asked for onions for the chili mac that came out 38 minutes before the rest of our food and the guy in a tie told me "We're still working on your order". Which turned out to be a big fat lie. When we realized our food wasn't even being made we asked for a refund because we were over it at that point and the guy in a tie said "We don't give refunds". When we got our burgers the fries were missing... a couple more minutes later and we were angrily eating our "fast food' which was good. I'll probably go to Wendy's next time. The patties and cheese were great, and the sourdough tasted fantastic with a good crunch. The pasta in the 5-way chili was overcooked, and had very little meat, but overall an okay dish. The fries got cold very quickly because they were straw-cut fries, and probably could have been salted a little more. The chili isn't too bad, but the first bite was deceptive. I didn't taste a whole lot of flavor or spices, but more bites proved me wrong. Very mild in comparison to other chilis I've had, but not bad. The snickers shake was good, probably could have used a little more snickers crumbles. They also forgot to include a medium coke, which was quickly remedied, but still an inconvenience. Whoever owns this place! Get your workers more help. We never received our food after an hour and was told to go online after politely requesting a refund. I checked the website and there's nothing about receiving a refund. You have a full restaurant and far too many orders per customers . The fun atmosphere, friendly-service, good burgers, and tiny yummy fries Steak 'n Shake of yesteryear is gone. We walked in, had to place our order at a kiosk (where it asks for a tip even though there is NO service), weren't greeted, had little to no interaction with staff (when we did they were not inviting or friendly). We had to do everything ourselves- order food, retrieve food, get drinks and condiments, search for a clean table, buss our table when done, and scan our receipt to get the soda machine to dispense our soda. The tables are bare, no napkin holders, salt and pepper shakers, just bare-dirty tables. The food was flavorless and the fries undercooked. Sadly, the tip option at the kiosk was not for us to receive a tip for serving ourselves even though we gave ourselves excellent service. It's now a fast food restaurant with sub-par food and no service. They also took away the veteran discount and sadly don't give you an employee discount for all your hard work while eating there. read more

When they called my name for the order I came to get it and part of a milkshake with the whipped cream and cherry was spilled on the counter. No cup just the toppings and ice cream. Dissapointed. Was here the other day (Ive been here in the past) and the service was suspect, the waitress had a wide eye look like she was a zombie or her first time waiting tables. still a good steak and shake for the most part sits inside the old truck stop. nice large dining room big with the locals for years and years usually the quality of the food is very good. sometimes all depending on the time of year when the kids are working the service could be a little slow but most people don't seem to mind it's that small farm town kinda atmosphere. this one 24/7 365 like many steak and shakes if you arrive before 11 a.m. and after 6 a.m. they have great breakfast. there Tennessee Pride sausage patties are just phenomenal. the pancakes are really good to I have them quite a bit I never do the all-you-can-eat cuz they're so damn big two or three fill me up. but are you steak and shakes that open before 10 a.m. do serve breakfast lot of them close at night though unlike years ago and they were always 24/7 sign of the times I guess. read more

This is the worst Steak 'n Shake in the chain. Nearly all others are ok to good, but not this one. Cleanliness nope, food quality ugh, incompetent staff check. We started going to S&S back in the 70s and this place is the largest and crappiest we have seen. Try Culvers just east a ways for much better food. We stopped here on our way home from St. Louis. Don't let the stars fool you, the food was good. I got the chicken fingers and fries with cheese, with an ultimate banana milkshake and mom got the single bacon and cheese burger with cottage cheese. It was good. The milkshake, if you love bananas was delicious and amazing. I even tried their new nutella crêpes, which were good but a little greasey when they shouldn't need to be. The issue I had was the waitress. She was slow over all to take our order. And when the food came up she put it down and walked away without a word or waiting for us to say anything. And my fries didn't have any cheese on them. And I still had no milkshake because she hadn't even bothered to make it before the food came up. It took two times of her passing our table to flag her down to actually ask about missing items. And while talking to my mom about how while I know it's the kitchen's fault my fried didn't originally have cheese on them, it is the waitress' responsibility to look at a plate and notice when something is missing from it, and that i'm not sure she should get a good tip, the busier came up to me and told me that this happens all the time, especially to staff that eat here and that's why she never tips when she eats here on her off days. The boyfriend and I were driving up to Chicago, so this was a perfect lunch spot (especially with the gas station right there). I was very impressed with how clean the restaurant was, and our waitress was very friendly. I had a hot dog and onion rings, which were delicious. The boyfriend had the California burger and some chili, which looked good too. We also got a milkshake to go, which was stiff competition for Chick-Fil-A's.
