It saddens me more than one will ever know to leave this 1 start review but I cannot sit back and allow this nonsense to take place any longer. Ever since I can remember Steak-N-Shake has been my "go to" or as one may say...my "pride-N-joy" (pun intended) buuuuut there is nothing in this world that chaps my rear end worse than talking myself into getting out of bed, going through the drive through...only to find out they're closed!!! You have signs plastered all over your building stating "open 24 hours"...not in St Charles you're not!!! This has to be the 6-7 time I've encountered this travesty and its cut me deep...so deep I had to download the yelp app and create an account just to leave my first ever review, a sad one at that. Bottom line...if it's past 10:00pm and you feel like being disappointed, just drive through steak-N-shake and look at all the employees inside while you circle around only to find out they will be open at 7AM while signs and stickers are plastered everywhere boasting the fact they're open 24 hours....they aren't. If anything I Hope this post can save one person the disappointment or betrayal one may feel when contemplating going to SNS late at night. I have had a few bad experiences at this location which really sucks because my family loves steak n shake and its the closest one to my house by far, so even though I've had horrible service time and time again i have kept coming back. Tonight was my last visit to this location and honestly to ANY steak n shake. The service was horrendous but that speaks nothing of the filth of the restaurant and the speed of service or lack there of. We waited ten minutes on three waters, thirty minutes on our food which came out burnt almost inedible on stale bread, and then another 45 minutes on three milkshakes. Our sever Madison said the manager was personally taking care of our food and service but we never saw or heard from him/her. The whole experience was bad. My family will not be returning. read more

I love the St. Charles location. When we walk in every Sunday morning for breakfast because they know it is always the usual within minutes unsweet ice tea with lemon is arriving at our table. Within 5-10 mins the usual homestyle breakfast(s) arrive perfectly cooked.Just the way we like it. Mahlet takes great care of us as does Angelina. They are the best servers ever. We sometimes just drop in for lunch and get the same great service, Anthony is a great manager and is always overseeing the staff or helping out at the grill or running the register he is a hands on manager. Holy cow, if you love waiting all night for your food this is just the place for you. I'm currently still sitting here in Steak 'n Shake going on hour 2 without my shake or chili. I literally just downloaded the app Yelp to write a bad review because this is egregious. Oh wait, there goes a table leaving without any food. They just got up and left because they have been waiting almost as long as I have. In case you were thinking this restaurant was crowded with customers you are wrong. There's 3 other tables besides us sitting here. I could have driven to the next nearest Steak 'n Shake and gotten a shake and my entire food order and made it back to this Steak 'n Shake before I would have even gotten my shake. I'm honestly amazed how slow this is taking. I feel like they are frying each fry one by one. If you are ever thinking about coming here then don't. Four stars for the service, Ellie was absolutely amazing. Kept her cool and was collected the entire time we were there, even though she got completely screwed on tables coming in and being short handed. This is the second time in a week my friend and I have been to this location, where they've been really short handed, and the server, Ellie, tonight was great. I can't say enough good things about her. The food was alright, we waited about an hour for a double steak burger, which was comped for us, but hey, its steak n shake at 3 am, not expecting the best. Could and should have been faster, given there were three employees working the kitchen and only one working the whole dining room, that was full. read more

"Steak and Shake...Famous for Wasting Customers' Time". After waiting for the late night menu, my wife placed a substantial order online for our family. When I arrived at the restaurant the "drive thru" speaker had a message that the drive thru was closed. Ok...I'll just go inside. Park, get out and come to find the door was locked. Had to knock on the windows for several minutes before someone came to the door, and said they were closed. Dumbfounded, I told I told the employee there was already an order placed online just 20 minutes earlier and they had already taken our money. All he did was take another ten minutes to process a refund, to top it off he didnt even offer anything for my wasted time, gas, and inconvenience. Not even an apology. Undoubtedly the last time I will go to that particular "Steak and Wait"...of course since we waited for the late night menu, nearly every other place was closed and I had to come home empty handed with my family still very hungry. What really bothers me is that they obviously got the order, but didnt bother to call us to let us know they were closed(they are ALWAYS 24 hour), and treated me like *I* was an inconvenience.... read more

My server, Emily, didn't notice that I was seated for at least 10 minutes. After getting seated at a dirty table I ordered and got my food and almost everything was wrong. She never came back to check on us and we never got refills. I saw her towards the back of the restaurant and she was on her phone most of the time as well. While Steak N Shake has great food, this location has gone down hill in major ways. I would honestly consider going to the St Peters on Mid-Rivers or the 370 Location out by Mills. I have visited The First Capital location 3 times in the last year and each time was horrible. From the dinning room smelling of sewage to the lady at the window failing to get the order correct twice and again at the window still having issues understanding that I want 2 number 14's and 1 number 16. first off, let me say that one has to account for the amount of people that come through with large orders, complicated orders, or order some form of chicken. that added on to the fact the sns is a quick service restaurant, but in fact not a fast food restaurant, so it is right to expect a quick associate response time, but a slow food service time. next off, if you come through and read off your order without giving any time to ring it in, I don't mean pause and wait for a response every time you say something, but don't read it all off at the speed of light and expect them to get it right. next off, do not act like a rude jerk, that's how you get you food made, correct, but in poor quality. and probably rang in in a way that will actually be more expensive. now on to my experience. I go there with these things in mind. I waited almost 30 minutes in the drive thru. granted, there appeared to be a full line and a full dining room. I ordered a number 16 and a number 5. they accidentally put the wrong burger in instead of the buttery burger. I went inside to try to get the right burger. I thought I would have to wait a million years... but the manager took care of it right away. fanfreakingtastic. even though something was messed up, I didn't act like a jerkoff and I got what I needed, without much extra time and with an overall pleasant experience. read more
