Very well maintained facilities. The staff are constantly cleaning and sterilizing. The wet sauna and hot tub are large and meandering, with nooks for intimate connections. There are also open shower rooms (like gym showers) next to the sauna and on the third floor by the gym. There's a dry sauna by the gym as well. The rented rooms are well maintained, with mirrored walls, flat screen tv (with porn channels) a lock safe and bed ideal for sweaty activity. I especially appreciate the water fountains with mouthwash fountains as well. The facility is three floors, with dark rooms containing swings, slings, glory holes, and play areas. You have the option to rent a locker for your clothes and belongings, or rooms which have lock safes inside under the bed. Great variety of guys every time I'm there. Keep in mind that when there are themed events there is often a line to get in, stretching outside and down the street. But it's a fun place to get naked and enjoy yourself. Also, you cannot bring any bags or backpacks in--only nap sacks with essentials like a change of clothes and flip flops. Your bag will be inspected before entry. My experience is as someone who was interviewed for a job at this particular location. I had an inside reference and was brought in to interview pretty quickly. The night before my interview I was told that the exact position I was applying for was given to someone else, but I was still encouraged to interview. That was only the beginning of the strange things... I arrived on time and the General Manager asked me to wait 10 minutes in the locker room while he finished something. Fine enough for me; I knew that I would've been happy with this job (the hours, the work, the benefits), but that I could do much better elsewhere if things didn't work out. Finally, the GM sat me in his office across from his computer screens, one of which showed his two dogs. He continued to work. I asked, "You have dogs?" He said, "Yes." I said, "They're very handsome." He finally looked at me and asked, "What does that mean?" I told him, "on your screen" to which he seemed surprised and said, "Oh, sorry. Thanks." As if this weren't odd enough, he asked me in the middle of the interview, "So you're married?" I told him no, never. And he proceeded to tell me that he isn't allowed to ask that question. I pointed out that he already did (my ring on my ring finger), that I wasn't married and he should move on. But he proceeded to tell me it's illegal to ask, and he didn't want to know and he went on about married and coupled employees who had problems because of it. I assured him I wasn't married. It was a fun night in general but almost completely ruined by a horrible check in staff member. My bf and I were visiting from out of town and the dude completely took advantage of us being tourists. He initially said it was 10$ entry but when we went to pay it was 45$ each. When I asked why he said it was for a mandatory locker which neither of us needed. I asked if we could share a locker and he then threatened to kick me out for asking that. No where on the site does it say that a locker is mandatory and the immediate hostility ruined the night for a couple hours until I got into a better head space. Sadly, I had the unpleasant experience of being berated by someone who seemed to be acting like a supervisor when I was checking in with my membership. The issue was a 4" bag with condoms and lube, which the website says is fine and which I've carried in before. They were so abusive that it killed my libido so I told the man helping me I had changed my mind and instead of entry would take a refund. The manager exploded with rage. I'm really glad there was a counter and glass between us because otherwise they would have made me fear for my safety: they were that aggressive and unhinged. I'll try again another time on the assumption that this deeply sad abusive person can't work 24/7. Really poor experience. For what it is, this place is amazing. It is a gay bathhouse, so this review assumes you have been to more than one of these types of facilities and understand what is required for these to exist in the modern era... The facility is huge; the wet area is expansive, including the craziest steam room and hot tub you will ever see, as well as a giant open shower with great views; there are also "group showers" on each floor and a dry sauna up near the gym. Much of the facility is various sized "private" rooms, but you can plan to just get a locker and still have a great time. Either way you get a key to lock your stuff up while you cruise around in a towel (or whatever you want), and you can leave valuables in a lockbox when you check in. You can swap your towel for another near the front desk at any time. There are many common areas you can hang out in, and the entire facility is clothing optional (except the gym, shoes and bottoms required). The only serious rule seems to be don't be an asshole/don't press anyone; there's lots of "implied consent" in situations like this, but you can plan to see some fun shows and do some fun stuff no matter who you are or what you look like. We went on a Tuesday and a Thursday around a holiday, and the crowd was great both nights. It gets bigger the later it gets, more so on weekends, and from what we have heard it is insane during events, so plan accordingly. The building is unassuming and our check-in took like two minutes, but I imagine it is a process on a busy night. Went with my partner and we had a glorious time. There is a certain tinge of disappointment when you realize a lot of the crowd is sort of endlessly moving in circles waiting for their prince charming (who shares their seven obscure kinks), but if you let go of pretenses about who you "should" be interacting with in a place like this, you end up having a great time. Lots of folks are exhibitionists here, and many folks are willing to participate in anything with no exceptions. That being said, if you come here with your mind set on some specific thing, you're probably going to have a crappy time. THEY HAVE VERY CLEAR POLICIES ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT BRING ON THEIR SITE. Stop with your messy moaning that they didn't let you bring your chest of drawers, or asked you to reveal what was hiding under your six coats as you check in, they're doing it for everyone's safety. When we visited, we literally brought flipflops, our ID, our phone, and cash. There are free condoms everywhere, and vending machines with (overpriced) stuff you might need. Their costs are also clearly posted, and their capacity is limited... If you're going to be put out by spending $40-50 on an "adult night out" this place isn't for you. If you're going to have qualms about grown men acting like heathens in a place like this, again, not for you. If you're going to complain about an underpaid staff, trying their best with a bunch of adult man pigs going at it - at a place like this - then again, not for you. The staff were great and they had guys on every floor hustling to keep things clean. That being said, the facility is NOT accessible in any modern way, and it's often quite gross in some areas and "unsafe" in many parts (poor lighting, random floor elevation changes, unmopped greasy puddles, sloppy bottoms shitting in the hot tub, etc.) Like all fun things in life, you have to be careful and watch your own ass. Went in for the first time with a friend tonight. I took a small designer shoulder bag with me. The desk staff seemed friendly at first. I had to pay $5 for it to be stored behind the desk, no big deal. Place was cool. An hour later I go to get my bag, and one of the shoulder straps is broken. There's simply no way that was broken without intentional force. I asked what happened and was told it "came like that". Bulls**t. They couldn't even take a minute to look for the missing buckle. Steamworks is my happy place. I visit multiple times per month and always have a good time. It's clean, modern, and big. The hot tub on a cold Chicago day is worth the cost of admission alone. The staff are friendly but no nonsense. It's great that there are stations for "preparing" as well as vending machines with lots of play essentials. As with any bathhouse, your experience will largely depend on the crowd. I've only been a couple of times when it's been super dead, but even then you can find a couple of people to have fun with. There's usually a very broad mix of "types" from bears to daddies to average guys to jocks. Sometimes you'll get a critical mass of picky Boystown-y types, but 99% of the time there's something for everyone. I love the Saturday bear parties, and Friday and Sunday afternoons/early evenings usually have a lot of bear/daddy/average guy types, which are my favorite times to go. My only wish is that there were fewer gloryhole areas and more open bench/platform/bed areas like the one in Seattle. It can sometimes be tough to get things stirring when people are constantly moving around in the GH mazes. read more

Last night Sunday i checked out at about 730 pm. I asked for a credit card receipt and the clerk rudely said no i gave it to you. I asked again and asked to talk to the manager. The manager was not there. The other clerk was very friendly but the tall clerk, Alfonzo was quite rude and came out of the office when i told him that he should NOT be in customer service. I found the staff to be efficient and liked the setup of he facility, although it seemed a bit cramped. Unfortunately, I found so many of the clientele to be judgmental, including one who made a loud, rude comment about me. Did they ever hear of "the glass houses" expression? At one point, I sat in the screening area, and the other men then suddenly left. Despite being there for three hours, I didn't play with anyone, and I saw other men in their rooms alone the entire time. If those men are not interested and likely wanting for a porn star or model to fulfill their fantasies ( keep waiting), at least they can be kind and polite. Even some friendly comments or conversations would have made the experience worthwhile. I have been to saunas in New York and Los Angeles and saw actuals models and actors whom I recognized there, but who were not rude or judgemental. I have probably been enjoying this establishment for over a year now. I even upgraded to VIP for six months. That came in handy over Market Days weekend. The line was super long when I left after an amazing day! The staff can be a little prickly due to the shenanigans and drunk/high people checking in. I try to be friendly and non challenging when checking in. I make it a point to tip them, as well as leave a little tip for the clean up after my visit. These guys work hard so we can enjoy this amazing sanctuary. It's no King Spa (Thank Gawd no naked children running arou, I wear sandals everywhere except in the whirl pool. The new or newish coffee machine was a nice addition. I more times than not walk out with sh*t eating grin on my face. Keep up the good work. read more

I say don't waste your time, at least not on busy nights. I waited an hour to get in, which made sense for the holiday weekend, staff and security were very nice but did not coordinate with each other. My fanny pack was checked and approved by security but then when I was paying they told me such a bag wasn't allowed, and I would have to put it somewhere like a nearby bar coat check or in my car (I took a ride share) and either way I would have to get back in line. Unfortunately the rest of my group had already entered, so I spent an hour in line just to walk of shame back outside, and head back to the hotel without my travel group. A little communication between the front door and the registration window would save time for everyone, customers and staff. Some signage or someone to verify peoples belongings would have been appreciated during the 30 minute wait between the front door and the registers, so I can't say I recommend this place if you're looking to make the most of your time. read more

Bought VIP tickets, but on saturday night the employee running the door was beyond rude. Yelling at people in line - saying things like "i run this place motherf****r.). Extreme security at the door that groped my privates and rear end before letting me in. Then turned away one of my friends in line for having his prep prescription on him, in the bottle, with his name on the label. There was no discussion, he just screamed that he was bringing in drugs and humiliated him in front of everyone. It was merely a ridiculously expensive parking excursion for me. At the time there was no indication there weren't bags allowed and they wouldn't allow my hygiene bag in. I have very long hair and these establishments don't offer hair care products (decent shampoo, conditioner of any quality, or anti-frizz products). Based on the hostility I've seen expressed about this place I'm grateful I "got off," with merely the expense and inconvenience of gas, the drive, and the absurd parking costs. I'm even more grateful I didn't even get to the absurdity of their policy of outlawing all medications. As far as I understand there aren't "ins and outs," so if you have a med that is taken more frequently than the length of your stay, you're in trouble (there are quite a few of differing purposes that are taken every four to six hours). Even worse is their "no liquids," policy that would have potentially cost me as much as ten grand if they dumped a whole bottle of my narcolepsy medication in the drain (xyrem well over 30k a month). Policies that induce, cause, perpetuate, or sustain harm need to be changed. Treating GUESTS who pay you to be there like we are criminals BEFORE we demonstrate any such behavior is awful. If your harm promoting policies are about liability (isn't everything about a dollar anymore?) I'm gong to guess that there might be a talented lawyer who might even be willing to discount their fee to give you legitimate indemnity relative to patron's behaviors. It's possible, I didn't suggest it was probable. Because of this experience I have had to seriously consider whether or not I should bother checking out the Canadian options. Where a snooty employee with a bad attitude could legitimately ruin my entire trip. read more

This place has changed hands, names and atmospheres since the days it was called The Unicorn in 1991. I do not live in the USA anymore but till 2019 I did and went there prequently, the place got a major boost whern new mazes glory hole rooms and a 3rd floor that was very hot were added in the early 90s. I can only tell you that between 1993 to 2012 it had the most incredible "types" I have ever seen closet cases who were looking for a hot gay suck, bisexuall looking to experiment, wierdos , horse hung skinnies and I do think it was all because of the removation and the way the rooms were set up (the oral expart did not have to kneel, the room was set on two levels were the top stood looking down and on the next level down the bottom stood as well looking up) If you were someone who did not have a chance at the bars and clubs you always got something there becausew some did not care as long as it felt good, after all you good pack and leave the trick any second and if you had dentures you were king, gum jobs were in demand. And if you were good some came for seconds. Amazing place and had the best time ever. A few years later it changed a bit and never reached that golden era again but still an adventure. read more
