A chance meeting led me to Blake and I'm much better off for it. He is professional, knowledgeable and efficient. We have always done our taxes by ourselves but this year, my wife became a self employed contractor so we needed some help with our taxes. After looking at the reviews we decided to go to Steel Guarde and had an appointment with Joe Rush. Joe was extremely helpful in explaining everything we needed to be doing to reduce our taxes and meet all of our filing requirements and was very patient in answering all of our questions. He gave us a quote which we agreed to and then actually came under the quoted price because he said it took a little less time than anticipated. Created a Yelp account specifically because I have owed these guys a review for a while. I've known Joe and Blake for many years now and have trusted them with my taxes as they evolved from fairly simple to complex (investments, house, kid etc.). I explain complicated technology simply for a living, and have noticed that for a few folks they just seem to "turn off' when I go into detail or use too much jargon; even if they are very competent in every other area of their lives. For me this happens when I deal with taxes, and for that I trust these guys completely and plan to as long as I can. Oh my god. I never thought I'd like going to a tax accountant, but I LOVE Blake!!! I'm so glad I found him. If you're looking for an accountant, look no further. He's awesome. Very personable, smart, and knows his tax s***. I had been doing my own taxes with turbo tax for the last five or so years, and apparently missing HUGE deductions. Blake was incredibly efficient, communicative, and thorough during our tax prep session. Our return was fairly straightforward, though we did have several different types of investments. We were done in half the time of our previous experiences at H&R Block (30 min v. an hour plus) and at a significantly lower cost. His level of competence and knowledge also felt far superior--there was no referring back to a giant book of tax law/guidelines or asking questions of his colleagues. We also received the largest tax return we've ever had, though I understand that varies with each individual scenario. Blake also had very helpful advice regarding keeping records for next year. Our first experience with Steel Guarde was great. They prepared our tax return quickly and efficiently, and we were pleased to receive a refund for the 1st time in years. Then we moved, mid-year, causing our tax return to be split between 2 different states. We asked Steel Guarde if this would be a problem, and they assured us that they have clients nationwide, so our situation would be 'fine'. BIG MISTAKE on our part! We submitted our documents to them via their portal, several months ahead of the deadline, to allow them plenty of time to review, ask questions, etc. We checked in with them periodically to make sure everything was going smoothly. (we were a bit nervous that they didn't seem to have any questions, due to the nature of our situation). Finally, just days before the deadline, they gave us our tax return, and we almost had a heart attack with the amount of money they said we owed! And of course with almost no time left, we had very little opportunity to try and find out how they arrived at such an astronomical number! We were forced to find someone locally who could try and unscramble the mess that was thrown into our laps by Steel Guarde. Fortunately, we found a tax professional that was able to uncover all the mistakes and inadequate methods used by Steel Guarde. At the end of the day, we saved THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS by going to someone else. We are so thankful that we NEVER have to use Steel Guarde again! read more

Called about setting up an appointment to get taxes taken care of and the receptionist was off putting at best, but because of the reviews on Yelp I thought I would still give them a try once my documents came in for the year and told her I would call back to schedule an appointment soon. Little did I know that they start turning away new clients at early points in their tax season, so when I called back, like one would imagine, I was pretty upset that this wasn't disclosed during our first conversation. I guess it all worked out for the best, because if she is any indication of how their business is run then I'm better off looking elsewhere. This review is long overdue. I went to see Blake last fall because I've been a contractor for a while and was not sure what to do with tax deductions and 401K. Blake sat with me for an hour, explaining what options I had and what my tax return outcome would have been with each option. He also looked at my paperwork to crunch some real numbers. He didn't even charge me in the end and he told to come back during tax season if I needed an accountant. Well it looks like I might have to become a vendor soon so I'll definitely be going back because there is nothing like getting the right tax advice at the right time before you screw yourself up thinking you can do it alone. read more
