My wife heard about Steel Penny Cafe from a colleague at work who lives in Hatboro, so we decided to check it out on Thursday, February 12, 2026. We are glad we did. From the street it has a really cool look and the inside leans into an industrial style with a great aesthetic. It's a comfortable space with a nice vibe. We ordered a couple of cocktails: a lemon drop and a Manhattan. Strategically we decided to split a Detroit-style pizza called the Iron Pig. Good call because one square was the perfect amount for dinner. And now we have a few meals to heat up for the next few days. The drinks were excellent and the pizza was outstanding. Great flavor. Our server Ally was welcoming and friendly and top notch on service. It is the middle of winter so we weren't considering outside dining, but they have a great outdoor space near the street. Looks like a fun place to hang out. It's definitely a place we'd consider visiting again. read more

We have been sleeping on Steel Penny! Going down the list, the staff is incredible! They are all so hard working and so attentive to everything. They don't have server tunnel vision, they work as a team and it shows! The vibes are so cool here. I mean, if you're gonna open a cafe next to a scrap yard, you have to lean in to the theming. I love the vibes, I love the appearance. The food is amazing top to bottom. First, their coffee drinks are always spot hitting, partly due to the fact that they roast their own coffee beans on site. The cocktail menu is always enticing an even though I'm not a huge drinker, I'll be working my way around this. The breakfast options are plenty and if you don't get their bacon you are missing out! The lunch sandwiches are served on a house made ciabatta style bread. Packed with fresh meats, cheeses and veggies. Every ingredient is perfectly seasoned and added delicately, not just items slapped on a roll. The Detroit pizza is what initially drew me in. While they have some options with more toppings, I'd say go for some of the more simple Detroit pies to really allow the famous crust to really shine through. My personal favorite so far is the white pie they do with roasted portobello mushrooms. I have only been for breakfast and lunch but with all the craft beer options I need to go back for dinner to sit and relax with some friends and family! read more

We had amazing time at Steel Penny over the weekend. Our server, Emma, was amazing and very helpful. We ordered the chicken cutlet salad and the Capo Donna Detroit style pizza. The chicken cutlet salad was huge and enough for two people for sure. There was a ton of chicken on the salad. My only criticism would be that the dressing tasted like bottled dressing and the croutons were also probably from a bag. The pizza was delicious! I will definitely be returning to try one of the sandwiches or a different pizza. Definitely would recommend this place! read more

Delicious salad with many other selections to choose from. The thick crust Detroit Pizza was unique and delicious. It comes in a rectangular size and you can cut it in 6 squares to share among two people. It was fully of favor and unique taste. Have to try another Detroit pizza if I come again. I was way overdue for trying this place. It's a local find in an unsuspecting location. It's next to the scrapyard which is behind the elementary school! But as soon as you walk in the door you will be greeted by a welcoming staff and a simple and cleverly decorated space. There are high top and standard height tables. They have an assortment of mixed drinks, beer, and wine available. We grabbed two of the traditional pizzas and a cutlet sandwich. The pizza is outstanding and I have to get back to try the Detroit style. The sandwiches are large and served on homemade pizza dough rolls. They're stuffed full of goodness. Steel Penny Cafe was consistent the whole way through. Other restaurants should take notes. This was a great experience from start to finish. No doubt it was busy when we arrived. The parking lot is enough to deter you from wanting to dine in but thankfully we found a spot within a minute of arriving. The host added my name to a waitlist and stated it would be a 30 minute wait but we didn't wait that long. I'd say the wait was around 15 minutes. Our waitress showed up to our table promptly and took our drink orders. I love that they offer Boylan sodas. Carbonated drinks taste so much better in a glass bottle, am I rite? I ordered the diet root beer. The primary reason I wanted to visit Steel Penny was for the Detroit style pizza. Every single pie on the menu sounded incredible and looked appetizing. I ordered the rose gold - a thick square slice smothered in cheese and vodka sauce. What a dream. The dough was fluffy and crispy on the edges. I could've devoured the whole thing but I wanted to save some for dinner. I also ordered the Molten pie to-go (not pictured) and the recipient was extremely pleased with it. I'll be back to try the coffee and sandwiches next time. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order here. read more

Look like they changed the management here. Nothing tastes the same. Pizza was too salty when I got on of those Detroit pizzas. The chicken sandwiches do not taste the same as before. You would have to have heard about this place from someone because the odds of driving past it are slim! It's in a very industrial area but don't read that as unsafe looking. Their claim to fame is Detroit style pizza, which we had never heard of. We looked it up and it is characterized by ". . . a very thick crust and thick layer of sauce and cheese, usually with pepperoni and is baked in a heavily oiled, deep, square pan that gives it its characteristic crispy crust." There are 7 to choose from and with the recommendation from our friendly server Ashley, we went with the Pig Iron. It contained Sausage, cupping Pepperoni and Bacon. Not only was it delicious it was gigantic! There are also traditional pizzas on the menu. There are also a collection of great sounding sandwiches. We shared the Portobello and Roasted Garlic Cutlet. Among other things it had melted mozzarella, portabella mushrooms, homemade chicken cutlet, arugula, pecorino romano cheese, balsamic and lemon vinaigrette. Again gigantic and delicious. There is a small collection of sodas and canned/bottle beer on the menu as well as coffee and tea. There was enough food leftover to enjoy for dinner that night. Well worth another visit. read more

The dining room is shabby, chic industrial. It could have been a bit cooler during this hot spell. The service was adequate but I think they need another server. The Detroit pizza was the star. Thick, fluffy, but crusty, crispy and cheesy. The crust was delish to say the least. The homemade vodka sauce did it for me because it's my favorite. First off, it's important to note that Steel Penny does not allow customization of menu items. They're very rigid about substitutions or adjustments, which feels a bit off-putting and inflexible, especially for those who like to tweak their orders. That said, the Firenze sandwich was phenomenal. It comes with Burrata Cheese, Basil Pesto (nut-free), Arugula, Tomato, Balsamic Glaze, Sicilian EVOO, Salt, and Black Pepper, and you can choose between a chicken cutlet or Prosciutto di Parma. I went with the chicken cutlet, and it was an excellent choice. The rustic Italian bread roll was the perfect base, crusty yet soft enough to hold everything together. Every bite was flavorful, fresh, and well balanced. I also tried the Rose Gold Detroit-Style Pizza, which was very good. The crust was thick but still light, and the vodka sauce was delicious. I added pepperoni, which definitely elevated the flavor. The only real downside was the size, it's only six small slices, and for $20, that feels overpriced. Lastly, I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte. I asked for it extra hot, but it came out just warm. The flavor was fine, but I would have enjoyed it much more if it had been served steaming hot as requested. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars. I'd definitely go back for the chicken cutlet sandwiches as they're worth the trip. I'd hesitate to get another pizza at that price point, and I'd skip the latte next time. read more

What a gem this restaurant is! Tucked away between two literal steel mills is this great restaurant. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Decent amount of parking can be found to the left of the restaurant. As soon as you walk in you hit the coffee shop, although I'm not a fan of their drinks of the month because they are too sweet for my liking, I do enjoy their normal espresso drinks. In the back is the indoor seating and you can even get a peek of the kitchen where I'm pretty sure I saw them baking their bread fresh. The star of the show here is the Detroit style pizza. My family from Michigan said their deep dish was their favorite meal they had while visiting. They also have the best Caesar salad dressing on the planet I swear. Service is friendly and quick and we were greeted by who I assume is the owner who had his daughter coloring in one of the booths, so double thumbs up for being a family owned small business. Seeing the billboard on Street Road day after day, we couldn't put off, checking out the Steel Penny any longer. We were quite anxious to try the "Detroit style" pizza and were pleasantly surprised what a crispy crust, and Uzi gooey cheese! The sandwich I was disappointed with, as I specifically asked if it was a hot chicken cutlet, and was told yes, and what I received was similar to a deli style sandwich with a cold, cutlet and toppings - tasty but disappointing since I specifically asked if the chicken was hot or cold. The place is small yet comfortable. Decorated in rustic metal, steel, exposed wood and pallet boards all put together perfectly to fit the entire theme as it sits right next to a scrapyard. We had never heard of the place before our neighbor recommended it and we would never have found it on our own. It's next to a scrap metal recycle location so it's not in a neighborhood we would randomly drive through. Thankfully our friends told us about it. The food was fantastic. We aren't Detroit pizza people but their thin crust was great. It was light and very flavorful and the perfect size for the family to share as long as you're getting something else with it....which you should. We each got sandwiches we were excellent (I got the steel sandwich was really good, other family members got other sandwiches and salads which everyone loved). Sandwiches are large enough for leftovers. As good as the sandwiches were, the service was even better. In a time when restaurants have a tough time getting good help they should all come here to be trained or just to observe how well it can be done. Our person was Emma (major shoutout to her) but the other folks helped out and it's a well oiled machine as they help each other out throughout the meal. We visited Steel Penny Cafe this afternoon based on a social media reel. WOW! . . . Can't wait to go back. The Capo Donna Detroit-style pizza was amazing! Don't be fooled by the six slices there was plenty to go around and still take some home. It was tough choosing a sandwich from the menu, since I am a big fan of anything cutlets. After reading the description of the Sausage sandwich, I had to try it, and let me say, it did not disappoint! The in house bread made the difference. We are definitely happy to have found a new go-to place for Pizza and Specialty sandwiches, and, from the crowd there around noontime on a Friday, others are already fully aware of how good The Steel Penny Cafe is. Saw this place on social media so decided to give it a try tonight. Glad we did because this place is crazy good! The pizza was amazing - we had the Detroit style. The dough is perfect and their sauce is delicious! We also had the cutlet Milanese sandwich. First I ff, the sandwich is huge! But better than that in the flavor. The bread is house made - light and crusty- the chicken is big and was cooked perfectly. Add the saltiness of the Pecorino Romano cheese and then the zest to father lemon vinaigrette and it's a match made in heaven. Also, don't miss out on the cocktails! I typically stop in just for a latte or other drink and they are very good, with a variety of flavors and creative specials (monthly and sometimes weekly.) I've gotten the Detroit style pizzas to take home a couple times and they were excellent and very filling. Sandwiches are also delicious and satisfying. I'm sad about the fish pond going away, though it was also sad to see it full of trash all the time. Still, back when they took better care of it I loved to get my drink and just sit by it and feel peaceful. Now there's really no reason to hang around. I will miss it. read more
