I had a terrible experience at this salon! There was a glitch when I first began using the salon where the salon inadvertently sent their appt reminder text to my old cell number. Apparently, the person who now has that old cell number, for some reason, responded to that text reminder with curse words! The salon did not notify me of this situation until 5 months later when I requested a redo for a haircut that I had rec'd. The haircut that I rec'd was very basic and I was truly dissatisfied. Given that the cut cost $90, I requested that Kate tweek the haircut. This is when the owner of the salon contacted me accusing me of sending this cursing text message and that he would charge me full price for tweeking this haircut. I was truly shocked at the way that the owner came across - IMO like a bully. Not only did I not get an apology for a haircut that was less than pleasing, but I was accused of sending this inappropriate text 5 months earlier. It was me who put the pieces together that the staff had actually sent the appt reminder to the wrong number. So, poor staff communication on top of a mediocre haircut. I say no to this salon! In Seattle, you have your choice of high-end salons where you will truly be pampered and get the service that you are paying for. I have since found a new stylist and my hair is gorgeous. And, she charges $65 instead of $90. :) read more

I've been going to this salon for a while, and they do a wonderful job and have great customer service. Paul is my stylist, and I can't say enough good things about him. He always gives me a fantastic haircut and bang trim. Plus he's so delightful that I leave the salon glad that I had the chance to chat with him. I found this place because I bought a Living social deal, I was pleasantly surprised to see the salon, as soon as I walked in, they checked me in and asked if I wanted something to drink, then immediately my stylist walked out to take me back. I was given Alex Youmans who was courteous and friendly, he did a good color job, I also got a hand massage, neck and shoulders as well, turns out this is part of the experience. read more

I saw master colorist Jessica last night to update my roots and revive my red, which had morphed into a mix of dark and faded. She offered partial highlights plus a thorough root touch-up. She was very friendly, grounded and easy to talk to; we had a lovely conversation. She carefully painted highlights on my curls and updated my roots to ease the staircase of variance. She is a deeply kind person who wants to offer a positive experience. I was more than pleased with the results, which showed so much skill and care. I recommend Jessica wholeheartedly! read more

So far, I've had a series of negative experiences with this salon, and am not sure whether I will go back in the future: 1) First, I went in for a haircut; I had very long hair, and I told the stylist that I wanted to keep as much length as possible, while cutting off whatever was needed to give me nice layers and style. She indicated that she would cut off about 8 inches (I agreed), but she proceeded to cut off about a foot and a half. It ended up significantly shorter than I'd wanted or agreed to. 2) A couple of months later, I emailed the salon to ask about setting up an appointment to color my hair. I explained my whole situation (just wanted to dye my roots, same color as before, etc. ... very simple) and asked whether I would have to schedule a "consultation" first. The receptionist told me that I was required to come in for a color consultation before I could set up an appointment, so that's what I did. When I went in for my consultation, the stylist seemed bewildered at what I was asking. She told me that I hadn't needed to come in for a consultation (as the service that I was asking for was super easy), and that the salon shouldn't have required this of me. 3) I set up a THIRD appointment with the salon right after my consultation.... to get my hair colored. When I arrived for my appointment, I checked in and then waited for half an hour after my scheduled appointment time before asking the receptionist when my appointment would begin. She THEN told me that there was a mix-up with the stylist's schedule, and that he would be with me in another 15 minutes. I opted to leave the salon instead of waiting longer, and will now have to dye my own hair or find another salon. In short, VEY FRUSTRATING AND DISAPPOINTING! read more

I will be taking a break from this salon due to recent frustrations on multiple occasions: appointments begin 10 minutes after scheduled start time, colorists are double-booked with clients which lengthens my service by 20-30 minutes, and the salon is unable to schedule color/cut on the same day (even with flexibility on stylists). I have nothing but good things to say about the amazing talent and charming personalities of the stylists. I believe that the management has lost sight of customer service and is instead focused on maximizing profit. read more

Had a deep conditioning treatment a few weeks ago. They honored the $20 off that was available before the name change from Caruh Salon which was really nice. I had a great experience with Natasha, she was super nice but did let me know that the treatment would be temporary because I very badly needed a trim. I'm very nervous to get my hair cut by anyone but my mom who lives very far away but Natasha was so helpful and nice and not pushy and so it made me trust her. I made an appointment and yesterday I got the cut I badly needed. During the cut we got to talking about the semi permanent dye and she took the time to add that onto the service. I was her last client and I know I made her day go later than she had planned but she didn't mind at all and was even as excited as I was to add some violet tones to my dark hair. I love the cut and the color. I will definitely be back and would absolutely recommend Natasha. read more

Everything about the Matthew Steele Salon & Spa is terrific! The staff are gracious, professional and welcoming; spa, waiting area and restrooms are all clean and lovely; the music is soothing; the spa rooms and lighting are so conducive to relaxation and rejuvenation. Today I had my eyebrows and lip sugared and Elishia did a great job on both, with the shape of my eyebrows, the best ever! I had a facial from Shelby, and she too did a great job: my skin feels so soft, deeply cleaned and healed, and sparkling! All the products they use are Aveda, which smell lovely and are so natural and healing. I've tried many spas in the Seattle area and Matthew Steele is far and away the very best. I can't say enough good things about Sonja! I've been seeing Sonja for color for nearly 10 years, and have followed her to various locations. Not only is she a master colorist, but she is the most patient and kindest person I know. Above all, she's excellent listener and always wants to make sure the client is happy, while gently expressing what she thinks does and does not work. The result is always a happy client! After 15 years with a fun and sassy, but somewhat mom-like, bob, I decided to grow my hair out, which has been a 2.5 year process. My former stylist just couldn't get over my bob, so I've searched in vain for a new stylist, with mixed and pretty unsatisfying results. I'd heard about Matthew Steele Salon and Spa but I've never made it over to Roosevelt to check it out, which I will regret for a very long time, especially when I see photos of the bad trims I've had the past two years! This week, I had the opportunity to schedule a cut with their newest stylist, Brigette, and all I can say is WOW!! From the moment I walked into the salon, I felt relaxed and welcomed. It smells divine (Aveda!) and everyone is calm, warm and professional. I'll admit that as a mother of three, I'm often rushing from one thing to the next and actually came directly from another appointment which left my much-overgrown hair tied up in a scrunchy and an absolute mess. ( I thought I had a brush in the car!) Calmly, as it looked like a wild animal could pop out at any moment, Brigette sorted through my hair and chatted with me about why I was growing it out and if I had specific ideas about what I wanted in terms of length and style. She listened carefully as I explained my hair history and, somewhat embarrassed, admitted that I still really don't know what to do with my long hair. She walked me through a plan, explained her goals in making it an easy hairstyle to work with (busy mom!) but also to give me some flexibility for special days when I actually want to do something with it. Brigette was lovely to chat with, and talked to me about the cut, the tools she was using and also the products and why she chose them. Not only did I leave the salon with a beautiful cut and style, but I also had some pointers on how to work with my longer hair, suggestions on types of brushes to use and how to use them, as well as suggestions for ways to curl it and style it for a more fun or fresh look for going out as well as a smoother look for every day. Another great thing about Matthew Steele Salon and Spa is that they send you out with a little notecard listing the products used on your hair, the name of your stylist, suggested tools and everything, no pressure to purchase anything at the time and a nice organized reminder if I want to revisit the products later. I am already looking forward to my next visit for a spa treatment and massage for my birthday, and I know that my new stylist is Brigette... my search is OVER!!! read more

I have been seeing Sonja for color and Kate for cuts for several years and highly recommend them to anyone. Sonja is especially good with blonde hair and people often compliment my color. In addition to being great with cuts, Kate is excellent with special event hair. I've had her do various styles for many formal events and have been SO happy with the results. I love love love these two! Also, I've found that Matthew Steele Salon has incredibly convenient hours and has been very accommodating when there have been challenges with the schedule. There is a parking garage below the building and I've never had trouble finding a place to park. Five stars all the way!!! read more

I had a massage and unfortunately, the room is not sound-proofed at all. I am hoping this review will prompt the owners to invest in sound-proofing the massage rooms. I could hear talking, conversations, laughing and drawers closing in the room on the other side of the wall during the entire massage. They also really need to invest in traditional spa/massage music. Classical music was playing, and that just did not do it for me. They also need to incorporate a 10 - 15 minute advance consultation time in advance of the massage for the client to meet with the therapist. I had arrived 15 minutes early as instructed, but did not meet the therapist until after my official appointment time. I ended up getting a 55 minute massage instead of the 60 minutes I paid for because the therapist had to make sure to be ready for the next client. I think there was a delay that started earlier in the day, and just snow balled from there, unfortunately for me. read more
