Yesterday was truly abominable service though--I paid $4.75 for a small decaf americano, only to be told there was only enough decaf for a partial coffee, or a watered-down decaf americano ... when I said I might prefer not to get the coffee at all, I was ignored. Steeplechase is the kind of cute coffee shop I want to love but I'm just not there. The coffee has been hit or miss for me, sometimes tasting burnt. I love that they sell La Bagel Delight bagels, those are my fave, but wish they would butter the bagel for me when I order a toasted bagel with butter to go with the intention of eating it as I walk. Discovering it wasn't buttered and all out of shape after being scrunched up in tin foil ruined it. Lastly, and most importantly, I wish they would rethink the $10 credit card minimum because it makes me rethink about stepping in there every time I remember it. The bodega one block away sells this size for $1.00. But, you're paying for a place to sit and take it in, so....there's that I guess? The baristas behind the counter are aloof and standoffish (this is after multiple visits). Their vibe is sort of disinterested, like you're in the way of their day or something, making it feel uninviting (...so different from the way the interior is set up!) I don't care for small talk but the vibe is just...rude. You add your own cream and sugar and they don't have napkins but a weird brown, scratch paper on a cumbersome roll that's tough to access when holding a hot cup of coffee. They recently expanded their hours and added loyalty cards to earn free coffee after ten purchases, which is nice for people who live or work nearby. Steeplechase is a nice coffee shop. It does almost everything right for a simple coffee shop and promote good local brands. The coffee here is good and if you get a cappuccino or something they top it off with some nice foam art. I have had their normal coffee as well and its fine. It is a little expensive but I don't think outrageously so. They have a lot of quality pastries that I love to get with my coffee. You can get muffins/scones for a nice breakfast treat. You can also get sandwiches here which is apparently.. relatively new. They don't have a lot of variety for the sandwiches and can they can be quite expensive for what they are (like a simple grilled cheese.) However they at least offer them which many coffee places wouldn't. One thing I really appreciate about this place is they are always advertising and offering Brooklyn brands. For example I bought some Brooklyn made bread from them a while ago and I know they serve Brooklyn branded coffee beans. I don't know but I like that pro-local spirit this place has. I genuinely love this coffee shop, but the major problem is that they have a $10 card minimum. I understand $5 minimums because most drinks will probably land about there and everyone knows merchants end up paying fees. But, small business economics aside, I bank with Wells Fargo and it's very difficult for me to get cash, so I tend to go somewhere else 9 times out of 10. Also, the cash app gives you $1 off cups of coffee, but I can't use a card for just coffee (because of the minimum), so it also doesn't make sense for me to go to Steeplechase for that reason. Basically, if you don't have cash, and you don't plan on spending more than $10, there's nothing for you at Steeplechase. Again, it's a shame because I really like this place. read more

This cafe has so much potential (location, interior, great name/branding, etc.), but I am consistently put off when I stop in. The coffee, food and prices are all good enough and exactly what you'd expect from this sort of place. Unfortunately, the vibe is overwhelmingly negative. There are signs on the tables towards the front of the cafe stating that laptops and tablets aren't allowed, there is a $10(!) minimum for cards, you can't register loyalty punches when paying with a card, the wi-fi network information is (conveniently ...) obtuse and the baristas are cold and unapologetic (about the previous points). I'd actually put off writing such a negative review, thinking that the owners would learn from the others here and/or get tired of repeating things like, "we actually have a $10 minimum for cards", but that hasn't happened. So, I'm happy to nudge them and potentially spare others the trouble. Next time I'm in the area and thirsty, I'll either go to Windsor Coffee or head back towards my side of the neighborhood and just make coffee/a snack at home. read more

They also have fantastic sandwiches that are worth trying (even if best sandwiches in the 'hood are right next door). This is just what the neighborhood needed! I am so addicted to it. I have lived nearby for a few years, and have been constantly wishing a coffee place would open up. I really couldn't believe my luck when they put in Steeplechase. I know others have said it- I just need to reiterate. First off-- the space is really great. It's small, but doesn't feel overcrowded. The outlets near the tables and the free wifi make it very convenient to get some work done if that's your goal-- some places you go just have this attitude about people on laptops (The Oak & the Iris with their "no plug-in" policy). It's also incredibly clean, and they have nice outdoor seating as well. Lovely selection of pastries and delicious coffee. My favorite is the cappuccino and one of those butter scones from Balthazar. Mmm. Plus, they use real cups and saucers, which not a ton of places do anymore. I frequently come here on my to work to grab to-go coffees as well, and it's been consistently good. Also, the staff are so, so friendly. I really like chatting with them in the mornings and on the weekends-- it just has this wonderful community vibe. I've lived in the neighborhood for 3 years and I have to say this place is just ok. It was the only coffee shop on the main Ft. Hamilton Pkwy strip so I've had no other options until recently. The coffee is great, they brew Brooklyn Roasting Co. and it's consistent and tasty. Their iced coffee is great as well but I can't speak to their other drinks because I haven't tried them. They have a small assortment of baked goods brought in like doughnuts, scones, croissants etc. that are good as well. They also allow artists to hang and sell their work (photography, paining, drawing) which I enjoy and support. And they limit laptop use to the back of the cafe as to not appear like a spot for people to sit and work or whatever. BUT they lack in areas equally if not more important than variety and quality product. Their hot coffee is overpriced but their cold brew is ridiculous-over $6.00 for a large. The customer service for the most part is quite bad-cliche "I think don't care" hipster attitudes that really leave you wondering why the only words out of their mouths were "$10.25" before you pay and leave with your coffee and pastry. Steeplechase has been walking on thin ice with me from day one but the straw that broke the camel's back occurred when I walked up to the entrance at 6:55am (they open at 7am) and politely greeted the barista and acknowledged that it wasn't quite 7am but asked if I could grab a coffee when she got a minute. The barista stared at me for a few second and then replied with a blank expression and in monotone "You have to wait till 7." Now, I'm a small business owner and prioritize customer service. I would have accepted "We usually don't open for another 5 minutes but if you give me a second I can grab you a coffee." Even a "I'm really sorry, I have to set up until 7 but if you can wait I'll make sure to get you what you want." That's it and I would have patiently waited. For once I would have had an exemplary experience. If you want a decent cup for more money than usual and customer service that leaves you wanting then drop by but I'm changing over to Windsor Coffee on E. 4th St and Ft. Hamilton Parkway where the combination of quality product and customer service are much better. read more

This place is a classic example of a local neighbourhood shop that you want to love and support but despite repeated attempts to give them a chance; they just can't get it right. They are constantly out of everything, even during normal or early operational hours. How do you run out of breakfast food items or paninis at 10AM on a Saturday or a Sunday? This is just poor inventory management. They randomly shut down early without announcement, other than a sign on the door, which means if one walks all the way over to their shop, there is a decent chance they won't be open. They have a $10 card minimum which is annoying because they use squarepay which has comparatively low transaction fees. I wouldn't have a problem with the $10 minimum if they weren't always out of stock of everything. I'm not always in the mood to buy 3 coffees or a coffee and multiple bags of potato chips or prepackaged snacks. Finally the coffee grind is good but the execution is lacking as the pulled drinks are regularly too bitter. The paninis are unfortunate as they put effort into ingredient combinations but some how the sandwiches are always off the mark. They should master the basics before they attempt anything more interesting. The baked goods are tasty but those aren't made in house. I'd look elsewhere. read more

I'll second what another review said about being shocked at what they call a bagel & cream cheese--I used to get a bagel and a tub of Philly spread tossed in a bag at the dining hall in college, where it cost $1. Plus that was in the Midwest. This is NYC, show some self respect! The food options here are on the weaker side, but I like their scones. But I won't be getting them any more because they just raised the prices--again--and $3.75 seems a bit rich when most other cafes price pastries at $3. Speaking of $3, that's what a 16 oz French roast now costs, which is .50 more than it was a month ago and double the price of the myriad bodegas in the area. Don't get me wrong, the bodega coffee aint great, but I'm not a big fan of Steeplechase's either. I'm not really sure how one screws up French press but it just never has much flavor. I agree that the baristas are on the reserved/almost rude side; I come in a lot but I never feel very welcome. And the no laptop areas are ridiculously large on weekdays, resulting in a bunch of people crammed in back with empty tables up front. I am not from this neighborhood but my daughter had a basketball game across the street, and being we were a wee bit early we decided to pop in for a pregame bite. we ordered a sundried tomato basil , mozzerella sandwich on some delicious bread drizzled with balsamic and oil. I left with a bad taste in my mouth both figuratively and literally. The second time I went, more of the same. The girl behind the counter didn't so much as say hello let alone smile. She stood there looking into the distance waiting for me to order. Once I did, (I think I got a mocha) it was Hershey's syrup squirted all in the bottom of the cup unceremoniously. Providing an unwelcoming environment AND shitty drinks? Great job! One or the other, please. This place is far from a neighborhood coffee shop. I went in and was super excited after seeing the decor. I ordered a cold brew to go- yuck. The coffee was super watered down and tasted like coffee flavored water. Do yourselves a favor and walk a few feet down to the Bodega on the corner. You'll get a much better cup of Joe, and for a third of the price. read more

The best coffee shop in Brooklyn!! This place was really helpful during my college years. I would do homework and study there almost everyday. I no longer live in Windsor Terrace but I still go there from time to time. Such a cozy and wonderful place. The coffee is also the best I've ever had.
