I see all the negative reviews. And I can only speak of my experience. But I had a decent meal in this admitted, "hole in the wall." This is definitely a "country" place. Nothing fancy. Has a diner like feel with green vinyl booths and pub lighting. There is a separate sports bar type concept across the hall from the regular restaurant. Very much a basic grill and sandwich type of place. They have cheeseburgers, various types of breaded/fried chicken, steaks. Ham and turkey sandwiches and hoagies. They have lunch plates serving up things like honey sriracha salmon, chicken tenders, fried shrimp, etc. Apps include cheese sticks, jalapeño poppers, ahi tuna. They have a setup where you can do their salad bar, soup and salad, soup and half a sandwich, and various types of prepared salads. They have daily specials as well, which is what I ordered from. I had the bacon pimento cheeseburger medium, and it was cooked appropriately and well-seasoned. The pimento wasn't quite melted, but was still pretty good. Bacon was perfect. Large portion and I only ate half and took the other half home. The fries were fantastic! My meal cost without tip was 21 dollars, and I consider that a great deal. Other specials included fried pickle chips, lemon herb cod, blackened chicken Alfredo, sweet potato casserole, California chicken salad. Service was on the southern side of slower, but attentive. My server even got me a Diet Coke in a to go cup as a courtesy, without being asked. Most of my time over the last five years has been spent in New York and other metro cities. Don't walk into this place expecting a Michelin star restaurant. It's a homey rural feel with down to earth people and decent food. The less than great reviews caused me to pause before coming here, but a couple of locals said it was good so I took a chance. They had just opened so I was not surprised to only see people at 1 table. The first thing I saw was a salad bar that was fresh and well stocked. It wasn't over filled with options but did have some things not normally found like pepperocini's and salsa. You could get this as a meal or a1 trip as a side. I ordered the 9oz bacon wrapped filet mignon. The menu listed it as Market price, I was surprised to find it was 26.99. Garlic Green beans and salad bar were my sides. I really want to like garlic green beans but I don't so I won't address them. I am sure they are fine if you like then. The filet was ordered medium rare and came out perfect. They gave me a steak knife but a butter knife would have been fine. I assume they use a flat iron grill as there were no grill marks but it was very good. I came here based on a few locals telling me it was an ok place. The recent reviews paint a picture of bad service and mediocre food. What was my experience like? Walking in it is a tad confusing as they don't really have a host/hostess stand. I walked back and forth from the bar to the restaurant a handful of times before someone asked me if I needed help. I was seated and was promptly approached by my waitress. After asking if they had a bourbon menu I ended up just going to the bar and looking at the bottles they had on the shelf. Since I had reviewed the menu online I was ready to order. I went with a ribeye steak and a trip to the salad bar. I had the option of a second side but as I am trying to be carb conscious I opted out of anything else. The salad bar is ok. Not a ton of options but they did have a few pasta salads and maybe potato salads. The greens looked like they had seen better days. I grabbed the least worse looking greens, some cheese, egg, cottage cheese and dressing. Overall a pretty basic salad. The bourbon came out and looked huge to me for some reason. I am thinking it wasn't more than 1.5 / 2 ounces but just seemed like a nice pour. I got the Bulleit neat. The steak came out rather quickly. I ordered it medium and when I cut into it, it was more like medium well. That is ok with me since I typically order my steaks a level cooler than I actually like them to be. It had little to no flavor, but some salt and pepper cured that right up. The ambiance was ok. It's definitely a little older in there and the seats could use some love. The music was not terribly loud but the entire dining room is near the kitchen so you can hear the waitresses and kitchen staff chatting when they aren't busy. Considering your options here in Vidalia, over all it wasn't horrible. Would I come here again? If I lived here I could see it but being a visitor, one visit was all I really needed. read more

This is a locally owned restaurant, which is reason enough for us to want to write about it. It's an attractive establishment serving good food, though nothing extraordinary, in the couple of times we have visited. But if you happen to wind up in Vidalia, you'll find this a dependable dining choice for an evening meal. The menu encompasses a large selection. Whether you're in a mood for steaks, seafood, chicken, soups, salads or whatever, they seem to haver it covered here. We've eaten many of the dishes and don't have any favorites though we lean toward the various chicken and fish dishes. As with too many restaurants, the kitchen tends top slightly overcook food; both chicken and fish would benefit from a lighter hand. That said, the vegetables have been well prepared, and the bread comes hot. We've heard the steaks are good, but we're not much into red meat, so you're on your own. Don't mean to sound too lukewarm, but we haven't found anything that really stands out here. By the way, there is a bar attached to the restaurant, so you can enjoy some alcoholic beverages, which is not always the case in many rural Georgia diners. If Yelp allowed half-stars, we've give Steeplechase two and a half rating. It's a pleasant but hardly memorable dining experience. read more

The decor at the Steeplechase Grille and Tavern is appropriate for the name. The booths are adorned with green vinyl, fabric backs and stone separating the diners. Too often the decor falls far short of the name. The menu has many selections, almost too many, but they give you a "daily specials" menu which narrows choices down nicely. I chose the "Quesadilla Explosion", which was similar to the southwest salad made famous by Wendy's, but much better. Debbie chose the "Jerk Chicken Spinach Salad" and said she liked it. So the entries were good; however, the desserts were out of this world! I had the "Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie" and my wife had the "Key Lime Pie". Both of us agreed these deserts were the highlight of the meal. The driving rock music playing loudly in the background was not consistent with a British-themed fine dining experience, but otherwise it was very much worth the money. read more

My wife and 6 other friends went to Steeplechase Grill on Sept 1st. The plan was to have an enjoyable night out dining with friends. The end result, my wife and I won't be returning to Steeplechase. This wasn't my first visit here. I've dined here at least 5 or 6 other times but not again. Our server for this night was Ginger. My wife and I started our dining experience by ordering two Appetizers (Fried Mushrooms & Ahi Tuna Sashimi) so we could share with our friends at the table. The Fried Mushrooms were good and the Ahi Tuna App was OK as well. Notice I'm not bragging or telling you just how "OFF THE CHAIN" they were. They were OK to good but..., we have had better. When it was time to order our main entrée's we chose to go with beef steaks. My wife loves Filet Mignon and normally likes a 6oz Filet. Steeplechase however only offers a 5oz Queen or 9 oz King Filet. No biggie she went with the 5oz and asked that it be prepared Medium Rare. For her side she chose Steamed Broccoli (a $1.09 Add-on). I ordered their 12oz Ribeye and asked that it be VERY VERY RARE. The waitress asked if "Pittsburgh Rare" was OK. A "Pittsburgh Rare" steak is one that's been heated to a very high temperature very quickly, so it is charred on the outside but rare or raw on the inside. Its sometimes referred to as "Black and Bleu". I told her "Pittsburgh Rare" would be fine. I also had them add 2 skewers of grilled shrimp ($5.99 Add-on) and Sautéed Mushrooms & Onions ($3.49 Add-on). For my sides I had a one-time trip to the salad bar and a "Loaded Baked Potato Soup". The salad bar at steeplechase is OK. Nothing to brag about and nothing like a Ruby Tuesday but its OK. After my salad I received my Loaded Baked Potato Soup. It was new to me and tasted pretty good. Would order it again more than likely if I found it somewhere else. At this point our main entrée's arrived. My wife received her 5oz Filet and the first thing I noticed was the cut/thickness of the filet. Her filet may have been five eighths (5/8") of an inch thick at most. Not what we were expecting. When she cut into however it did look to be medium rare. My friend across the table from me ordered a 12oz rib-eye like I had but asked for his to be Medium Rare. When they delivered his steak they had put my Shrimp Skewers on his plate. He gave them to me and I had to immediately send them back because they were way over cooked. They delivered my rib-eye and had put my Sautéed Mushrooms and onions on top of my steak. When I cut into my steak it was medium. My friends was medium rare like he asked. Both of our Ribeye steaks looked to be cut about the exact same thickness. If they were more than one half inch thick I'd be surprised. At that point we suspected the cooks putting the hot mushrooms and onions on top of my steak allowed it to cook to much so I sent the steak back and asked they keep the mushrooms and onions off to the side and not on the steak itself. While I waited for my RARE steak to be recooked, my friends started eating their food. When they brought out my new half inch thick 12oz rib-eye for me, you could see that the fat hadn't been warmed up enough to even start to render and was actually still hard to my touch. At this point I concluded that my ability to get a Rare steak at Steeplechase was never going to happen. Additionally, by this time my wife and friends had basically finished their meal so I told the waitress I would pay for what I had eaten and nothing more. Oh and the shrimp skewers I sent back, they came back still over cooked but not near as bad as the first ones I received so I ate them. When my bill arrived, the restaurant had added as 18% Group Gratuity to the bill. Based on what I've seen so far, Steeplechase most likely does NOT cut any of their steaks, including their Prime Rib, in house. All of their meats, at least beef, I suspect are ordered and received in portion controlled Cryovac packaging. As such, the ability of anyone to come in and get a RARE steak or Prime Rib is truly impossible. I mention the Prime Rib because I ordered it last year and had a similar issue. Their menu touts their Grilled Prime Rib as "a tempting 12 oz cut , oven roasted slowly then char grilled for that extra flavor served with a side of au jus for dipping." They were unable to give me a rare Prime Rib and now I understand why. The oven roasting they speak of is probably done by their meat purveyor and NOT on site at Steeplechase and then the prime rib is portion control sliced and cryovac'd by their supplier for shipment to Steeplechase. All Steeplechase does is open the package and put it on the grill before sending it out to the customer. Nope, we won't be back to Steeplechase as far as I'm concerned. read more

Terrible experience. To start I want to say the server was great. BUT the food service left alot to desire. 7 of us went for my pawpaws birthday. Our orders consisted of 1 rib eye steak cooked medium, 3 sirloin's cooked medium rare, one order of shrimp and an order of hamburger steak. When we got our orders all 3 sirloin's all of them were RARE, cold inside. We sent them back and got them back a few minutes later the exact same way, seared where we had cut them and still rare inside. The hamburger steak was ordered well done and came still pink inside. After asking to send the sirloin's back a second time we decided to get rib eyes ordered medium. Once we finally got those Steaks they were good. My grandmother ordered a single slice of key lime pie and it was "on the house" which I will say was nice but after enduring what we went through, not nearly enough. We still received a 200 dollar bill, with no compensation. The only change that was made to the bill were they removed the charge for the more expensive cut (sirlion) and charged us for the rib eye! A very terrible experience for a place that could very well be 5 star place. And p.s. you might want to clean your air vents in the ceiling, they are very dusty and dirty. read more

Went here based on our hotel desk suggestion. Ordered the beef medallions cooked medium. They came out raw in the middle. Not rare...raw. Sever never came around to ask how things were, so being really hungry, I went ahead and ate it. I did save a piece to show the server when she finally came back. To her credit, she offered to take it off the bill, but I declined since I had eaten it. Salad bar was pretty limited. So, based on the lack of attention from our server, the lousy salad bar, and the cooks inability to cook, I won't be eating there in the future. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by Steeplechase. I was in Vidalia for a meeting and googled restaurants and Steeplechase was the first one that popped up. I was able to check out the menu on my smartphone and it looked like a good variety. I wasn't super hungry so I went with the loaded baked potato and soup combo. The potato was great and stuffed with chives, bacon and cheese with butter and sour cream on the side. Our meals also came with a small loaf of very dark bread (pumpernickel perhaps) that was really good. I had the fried chicken soup. read more

In Vidalia, there are not a ton of options that aren't fast food. This is a nice locally owned restaurant serving lunch and dinner. They have amazing Potato Soup and you have to have their Vidalia Onion Rings! I enjoy going there for lunch to get half a sandwich and soup. Honestly, I should have posted this when it happened, but I don't think this app was available at the time. I'll never eat at this establishment. I'll never know if I like the food or not, because several years ago I worked for Cintas in Vidalia, which is the same city this restaurant is located in, and was one of the businesses receiving the services offered by Cintas. It was my second or third day working at Cintas and I was still in training, so I had not met many of the people at the different businesses I would be going to each week. The"owner"of this restaurant (Steeplechase) and I had never met before this day. The first thing he said to me was this, "You all need to get your s**t together, don't you?" I apologized for any inconvenience he had experienced, although I was not at fault since I had never even been in his restaurant. He acted as if he wasn't satisfied with a word I had said to him about providing better service, and only added a few more rude comments of his own. I assured him that I would do my absolute best to make sure he received the best service possible from me, if he was to be one of my customers. I was still in training so I had no idea what route I would be working at that time. He never apologized for being rude or even thank you when I told him I would do my best to keep him satisfied with the company's services. Any restaurant owner should know that anyone, even people that provide them with services, is a potential customer to them. I only saw that restaurant owner a few more times after that. If he happened to be there when I stopped by to do my job, he never acknowledged I was there. He never even knew my name and yet he judged me as someone that, in his eyes, was a worthless employee. It has been almost 15 years since then and I'm sure he has forgotten I even exist. As for me, I have told and continue to tell people about the man that hated me without knowing me and for reasons that I had nothing to do with. Be kind to as many people as much as you can. We all reap what we sow and justice finds everyone eventually. I don't know why I decided to post this now. I guess because I never forgot how he treated me. I don't care if this restaurant serves the absolute best food in the world. I'll never eat here simply because of the way this man spoke to and treated me years ago. Atmosphere is acceptable. The staff is friendly and competent. It is above average in appearance. Menu items are interesting and appetizing. There is a wide variety of choices. Although there is good value I'd like to see the prices bumped up (no kidding) to eliminate the feeling things are done on the "cheap". Fine dining establishments (which is clearly what they are hoping to achieve) do not have "mini" salad plates. The salad bar is limited and the dressings are watered down or runny lacking flavor. The soup bowl is very small and about half the size of their competitors. Portions appear on the small size. On the day of our visit both wife and I had the glazed chicken pieces over rice and menu described as spicy. It was tangy and very salty (not spicy) but we got through it not wanting to be a pain to the chef but we did tell the waiter and he said "that is the way it is" to which we smiled. Others stopped by as they were leaving and advised we were doing better than they could as they could not endure that menu item. In fairness, this is the first menu item found objectionable ever....and I'm sure it will leave the menu soon. We could hear others describing it in the same way at nearby tables. The lighting over the tables could be improved. If you sit up to have a quiet conversation the light bulb glares in your eyes. The light globe does not provide a soft light so you must sit back and talk louder which is what others were doing on both sides. We learned so much from the subject matter others were conversing about....so beware as it is a small town. :) Lastly, they are limited as to what they can offer by way of parking. When backing in and out or even pulling into a space be very careful or you'll get an insurance claim to boot. read more

Yikes! Bad on every level!!! Service was exhausting, took over 20 min to get my Fat Tire which they ended being out of. Downhill from there. Buffalo shrimp was horrid! Burger was good but the frustration of a 2 hour lunch made it all turn bad. To beat all the owner came out and tried to make us pay for errors on the bill. Not sure where to start, slow to seat and serve. Was almost done when we had to try and find our waitress to have drinks refilled. Waitress was super ditzy, she did not know her products and spilled a drink on 2 people in our group. Did not apologize and acted like it was not her fault? Seemed like she was too busy visiting with the locals at other tables. Club sandwich had bacon bits instead of sliced bacon and onion rings were way over cooked. Not the best place in Vidalia! I order online (using THEIR website) to this restaurant maybe once, twice a month. And it is not just me, many co-workers. Today when I placed my online order, I modified my order. the Chicken Havana, that comes with rice and beans, instead of the rice and beans I wanted broccoli. Ok, easy enough, took away 2 SIDES and wanted broccoli. So all I wanted was a chicken breast with a side of broccoli, easy enough. I ordered it, USING THEIR SITE, and paid. Within 10 seconds I got an email saying it was "declined".. OK, so I call. Finally spoke to someone.. that told me I couldn't order it that way and it would have to rang in totally different. They never offered to take my order, they never contacted me before "declining" my order, even though I had provided my information when I did my online order. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, it is a shame that they were willing to lose a local customer over a side of broccoli, or not even caring enough to try and fix it.
