I had my dupuytrens contracture painlessly reduced in 15 min in the office. Apparently I was in perfect candidate not every hand is the same. I experienced 2/10 pain no incision. I had been dealing with this hand deformity for years and it had recently become worse. This procedure was not offered by two prior doctors that had looked at my hand. As a retired dentist I can really appreciate Dr. Klein's surgical skills and knowledge. Technically very skilled and knowledgeable. He has done surgery on my elbow to reposition my ulnar nerve. That has turned out well. I have had previous surgery on my left index finger which was cut through the nerve and ligament, and on each hand for Dupitrin's contracture. My wife had him treat a broken left hand and on a separate occasion a broken right wrist. He does an excellent job educating his patients. If I could give this doctor no stars, I would. His professionalism with managing my pain was very poor. When telling him how I was still in pain after my surgery for removing a small mass, his answer was trying to explain how something like this shouldn't cause pain. Telling me his "fact" based on what his books and study's say, instead of listening to me, the patient, and how I am feeling. He would not give me anything to help manage my pain. I know what I'm feeling is pain. How dare he tell me how I'm feeling, and not respect his patient. In regards to "Jasmine".. for you to make a comment to my post, when not even knowing who I am or dealing with me as a patient, is not only rude but embarrassing for you and Dr. Klein's office. It would make sense if the doctor himself replied to me. Once again, Dr Klein and his staff show how little they care about their patients. Again, do not go to this doctor. I must admit that I had reservations about having my broken fingers set by someone who has no support staff. I'm not a very nice patient and it takes a lot to to calm my fear of doctors. I worried needlessly. Immediately after surgery, I was given Dr Klein's home and cell numbers and was told to call him directly if I had any questions or problems! What a luxury, to be able to speak directly with my surgeon at any sign of trouble! Of course, I had no trouble. Dr Klein set my two spiral fractures so perfectly that at 8 weeks from surgery, almost no evidence of a break could be seen. At three months, I now have 90% of my mobility. (A note to all: physical therapy is a MUST post hand surgery!) Be aware that Dr Klein and his front office (Tim) may seem a bit disconnected, but are really extremely organized and helpful. The office is always calm and on time. Xrays are done in the office and immediately available. The new office has plenty of parking. I received the best care at the surgical center that I have ever received --and I have had several major surgeries including two hip replacements. Hand surgery is a tricky business; I recommend Dr Klein without reservation. read more

Fantastic experience!!! BACKGROUND After a bad break to my hand the local PAMF Urgent Care facility sent me to a 'hand specialist' who said I needed surgery immediately and pressured me to schedule the surgery within 48 hours (this message, btw, was given to me by the surgeon's PA - I only visited with the Dr. for about 15 minutes). DR. KLEIN EXPERIENCE I sought a 2nd opinion and called Dr. Klein's office and to my pleasent surprise, he saw me the next morning! And to my absolute joy, he x-rayed me on the spot and informed me that no, I did not need surgery. Dr. Klein spent about 30-minutes with me (no PA's) and educated me about what happened to my hand and why surgery was not necessary. He put me in a stylish blue fiberglass cast lol and it remained on for 6 weeks. I have since had the cast removed and my hand is doing great! Shame on you PAMF for initially referring me to a part-time hand specialist (really, a plastic surgeon) who wanted to do reckless surgery. Thank you Dr, Klein for being such a highly competent Dr. with a compassionate bedside manner and a truly professional office. I'd recommend you to anyone. It's been nearly a year. My hand has slowly recovered, numbness has improved a lot -80% range...though I estimate my strength is about 60% of my condition right before surgery. For 3 months after surgery my hand was mostly weak, numb and useless. I am now returning to normal activities, but compensating for a weak hand. My case was a weird one, during the surgery Dr Klein said "the nerve flashed pink, I've only seen that one other time in over 20 years". Some sort of nerve irritation or re-perfusion injury? Could happen to anyone, but what was so discouraging and upsetting was his behavior. I think he did a careful job, but we had a non ideal outcome. I needed some reassurance and guidance, instead he panicked me with negative comments and a defiant attitude. Would never have done this surgery in retrospect, was not prepared for mediocre outcome and long, painful, partial recovery. read more

I have been a nurse for 25 years and have dealt with many arrogant surgeons, however Dr Klein certainly takes the cake. I had an old avulsion fracture on a finger and 7 months ago had an accident where I jammed this same finger in a hyper-flexed position. When I saw him I had almost no flexion in this finger. He gave me his lecture about how in all his years of experience this was going to take up to a year to get some range of motion and the only way to do it was to do 1 (ONE) stretch to the PIP joint. After almost 4 months of doing this ONE stretch (which was extremely painful to do), on my second return visit he decided I might benefit from hand therapy. I cannot say enough about the OT's at DSCH outpatient center. I gained more mobility and function in those 6 weeks than Dr Klein said I would make in a year doing that ONE stretch. On my return visit with him, I was pretty excited to show him all the tools and things they were having me do that had resulted in this great improvement. He was so dismissive of what they did and what he called their "lack on knowledge". We agreed to disagree. I will never go back to him. He became so defensive he wanted to know "who" I had seen and "who" had said what. His ego was so challenged and he couldn't even say, "Wow, you have had made some great improvement". The OT's had requested 6 more visits, which he denied. So I followed his directions and stopped all the stretches and exercises the OT's gave me and went back to his ONE stretch - I have lost about 40% - 50% of my mobility and my finger hurts all the time. And after a week of bringing back all the OT's therapies, I have regained most of what I lost in that one week of doing his ONE stretch. He may be an amazing surgery and yes I have seen his kindness and he can be a great educator - however DON'T CHALLENGE HIM - HE WILL SPIT ON YOU. read more

When I asked a friend who worked as a hand therapist for a recommendation, Dr. Klein was at the top of the list. My problem was dupuytrens contracture. Dr. Klien suggested a Needle Aponeurotomy which was a simple, fast, mostly painless procedure. I'm glad I went with that, rather than collagenase injections [saving my fellow taxpayers 1000s of dollars, and myself possible complications]. Problem 90% solved after less than 15 minutes. I was impressed with the doctor and his one person office staff, Kimberly. I was called back to the exam room less than 10 minutes after my appointment time, when something amazing and shocking occured. Dr. Klein apologized for being late! I've never had that happen before, even when I'm seen much later than 10 minutes. His bedside manner is excellent, friendly, with clear explanations. His stand alone practice is a nice change from the large corporate medical groups that dominate our area. read more

I may be getting ahead of myself as I am just 12 days post-surgery. However, the trajectory looks to be a good outcome, and so far I'm impressed with Dr. Klein, his office, and his care. It's a small practice; the office atmosphere is calm. Both Dr. Klein and Tim, his receptionist, are low-key, methodical people and you never feel rushed. Dr. Klein's manner is caring, professional, and direct. He is good at explaining things simply but thoroughly. He is fastidious in all matters.There was no post-surgical throbbing pain, only a little ache for a day or two and easily managed with Tylenol. I just got the bandages off my wrist yesterday and you can barely see a scar. There's a little sensitivity but the pain I was suffering prior to surgery is gone! I'm very grateful to have found Dr. Klein and would recommend him without hesitation. read more

I too, (in reference to someone in the dental field who commented on this page) am an RDA, CDA and opened new dental offices. I'm well aware of the importance of PR in the medical field. To be very honest, I'm against people openly posting as this could be about me although, I never earned a bad review in my field or it could be about a fellow dentist I would be working with. Perhaps a person gets the first "wrong impression" and posts it which, can damage a hard working professional, such as myself. I do try to put myself in the their place. My strange experience was very recent. I called on a Tuesday telling the receptionist I was in pain. She told me to call back at the end of the week if I were still in pain. I have recently had hand surgery, with a temporary pin in place. The hand was so swollen in inside the cast and by that evening I had a high fever. I live very far from ER and it was late in the day. I took sleeping medication and addressed the issue in the morning. Usually all you get is a recording at this office and a message not to leave a voicemail unless it's an extreme emergency. (or go to ER, of course) That next day the GP took a heavy saw and cut the cast off. I took antibiotics as a precaution Tuesday night as, I had a bottle left from a surgery last year. It just happened to be the correct antibiotic for this problem. (just in case, of course---I consulted with my local friendly pharmacist before seeing the GP) Whether or not I needed the antibiotics is always in question however, it seemed to address my problem quite rapidly. I should mention that on my mother's side of the family were physicians and lady pharmacists. I'm not a complete novice. Dr. Kline is soft spoken and most kind. I'm hoping to get a good result as, I didn't get my surgical area wet nor did I over use the hand. This is the most I've typed in a long duration. My GP couldn't get Dr. Kline on the phone for a long while---I ended up back home awaiting a call. (cast in half and wrapped with an ace bandage) As it turns out Dr. Kline doesn't work on a Wednesday and he is in surgery on Fridays! Dr. Kline isn't in the Santa Cruz, CA. office on a Monday, either. I had to go to Watsonville, California for my elbow MRI (for Dr. Kline) and for the hand surgery. I have a foreign body floating and trapped in the elbow. (it's most likely a bone chip) This was my initial reason to visit Dr. Kline in the first place. Considering the position the patient would have to be in during surgery, he couldn't do both surgeries at the same time. The X-rays of my hand were taken by him, in his office. I hope that I won't have to endure the elbow surgery in the future. Dr. Kline looked at my hand that next morning when he opened his office. There was a cancellation and I took it. I get another cast back on in a few more days. I'll get the pin out in a couple more weeks, a removable splint and begin hand-therapy. Again, I stress that each person has their own ideas or what is right or wrong and I don't feel this is the place to air grievances. I'm simply stating my experience and I'm not saying it's a poor one. Dr. Stephan Klein / hand surgeon Santa Cruz, ca As soon as I waked in I became a little nervous!!! Clearly a small time hand surgeon! Very very unprofessional and arrogant! Talked down to me and patronizing! This doctor had a hard time believing that I was in excruciating pain after a nerve was damaged in surgery, with a cast on my hand began to swell fast and at least 5 emergency calls to Dr. Klein at home! Long story short, after 2 weeks my hand was bursting out the sides of this cast. my fingers were so swelled I could not feel them! I was really concerned, after he told me off more than once during a clash that he himself " the Surgeon " told me to leave the cast in. And I quote from Dr. Klien's own mouth; "Why do you keep calling me and complaining ! THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT, what would you like me to do WAVE A MAGIC WAND!" I am educated in sports medicine and worked at Dominican Hospital in radiology! Dr. Klein's arrogance convinced me something was really wrong when his feeble attempt to suggest X-Rays on his piece of CRAP X-Ray machine! I needed a MRI badly, but he felt that his ability to diagnose superseded the Radiologists at Dominican ! ℹ almost fell off my feet. I proceeded to go to EMERGENCY!!! Ok; This doctor destroyed my hand and wrist: hospital 7 weeks with very resistant strain of staph infection. Pick line, excruciating pain! I acquired a syndrome known as: REFLEX SYMPATHETIC DYSTROPHY BOTTOM LINE-- slow Chronic I explained that my wrist felt like my hand / wrist is slowly shrinking, osteomyelitis, osteoporosis, Major nerve damage done as well as wrist dislocated / Ulnar negative Deviation My hand looks like a young girls size, and many problems such as sympathetic nervous system gone array! Pain is worse than cancer pain! As of today, I'm crying often from pain, cannot take appropriate pain meds so I suffer with a dislocated wrist and fracture ! So now another surgery is necessary! The sad part is Dr. Klein never gestured that he screwed up! I went to his office to complain, he lied and could not look at me like a Doctor should! UNBELIEVABLE! Slowly my hand and wrist will be permanently damaged and unusable! P.s. I was a Professional Disc Golfer, NOT ANYMORE!!! JERK I CANNOT GET COMPENSATED FOR PAIN AND SUFFERING BECAUSE MALPRACTICE HAS A CAP OF $200,000 My attorney fees are $200,000 so why take him to court! I'm Fu_ _ Ed !!!! read more

I have had two different surgical procedures done at a surgical center by Dr. Klein. As I am still in the cast, I can't really comment about my rehab on the present one. However, I can say, that up until this time.....I have nothing but glowing reports for the care and assistance I have received from both Dr. Klein and his receptionist. I was asked to have an EKG, but felt that it was a welcome precaution (what with the litigious nature of people). I look forward to a successful (as the 1st one was) rehab and the ability to use my left hand as well as my right. Dr. Klein is fantastic. 2 years ago, when I fractured my wrist, he put in a metal plate for support. The only sign that it is there is a thin white line, looks like a white hair. Just recently I fell. With hands down to stop myself, I was glad i had that metal plate. He was just as great when he checked my sore finger for damage. This dude is legit. I broke my radius and tore the ligament off the bone on a missed motorcycle jump back in 2006. He repaired it with inserting two pins in the bone and three external/removable pins were used to secure the other bones to the ligament. I lost some mobility in my wrist but I am still able to ride motorcycles and I have even been able to jump larger jumps. It has been over 10 years without pain but recently I have started to have a bit of discomfort so going back to see if anything can be done for one of the pins that has worked a bit loose. read more

I was referred to Dr. Stefan F. Klein for arthritis in both my hands. The left one was so bad, the cartilage at the base of my thumb was all gone and my thumb was moving toward my palm Dr. Klein, a talented and caring surgeon, did the surgery in January of 2013. A few months later I had full use of my hand and my thumb. Thank you so much, Dr. Klein. My husband was injured in an accident in April of the same year. The ball of his right shoulder was shattered and could not be repaired. Urgent Care sent him home saying he needed partial modular replacement and the surgery couldn't be done for a week because of the swelling in his shoulder. We called Dr. Klein the next morning and he had us in his office less than two hours later. He performed the surgery on my husband a week after the Urgent Care appointment (on his scheduled day off). We are lucky to have an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hands here in Santa Cruz County. By training, temperament and technique, Dr. Klein is top notch. He has treated my trigger finger finger for years and he's a pro. Far better than going to a plastic surgeon who dabbles in hands on the side, like most of the doctors the groups refer to. I get the idea this is a woman who has been working there and running the desk for years, and thinks she can treat people poorly. She was rude and spoke down to me.
