Almost for 25 years We had an issue with the service from another Vet. We trusted her-so well We gave her access to bill payments with our debit card. The bills were going up . Ect... our horse cut the side... we were told they would have to come every day to change the dressing. That will be $250.00 a visit.. We said no ... then we got a bill OMG Said we have changed our Service to another veterinarian... Then she started saying thins that we not true. Then the said I have been caring you Bills for a long time. What that is not true you never cared us , your office manager has debit the billing and set a bill paid . Since then we have used Steinbeck Dr D was the first .he was amazing.. he always explained what he needed to do ... then we met most of the other vets Dr "S" was the main person... if she was not available. Now we see the other vets and mostly the are female, no matter what time of the day or night. Years ago one of our horse hot spooked by the ground keeper drove the tractor fast by his stall .. It's 9:00 and Dr " S " came out . The cut was deep he could not walk to a covered barn to treat him... we had a conex we stored hay .. it was empty, she asked could you get him to go inside of the 5-by12 . I said he trusts me .. the 3 of us and a / new vet that joined their team... flash light were no going to do what she needed. She brought new team member, get their truck and point the head lights into the conex. Dr Sarah De Santi was so amazing in rain cold wind doing the secures one by one the horse . It must have been 11;00 he was back in his stall I think the other one was Dr Kalea . Tried to start the truck but the lights been in on so long it would not turn over. Dr Kayla would come out to tube horses when they colic... Star could tell it was a vet driving in to the stables just by the sound of the engine. Dr Carlton has done a few surgeries on our horses as well . Removing cancer on the back side of horses. What is so amazing is that everyone that is on Team Steinbeck, the front office Nicki who seams to know who is were who is available to come in an emergency... forwards calls to someone in the field, gets script refilled by a Vet and has it ready by the end of day to pickup Then the techs that come out with a vet that knows what they need to assist and usually has what they have it in hand as they request it. I continue to be very impressed with Steinbeck Equine. They have always shown competence, caring, and integrity. Recently they added to their already impressive array of diagnostic tools--they installed an MRI! Wow! This will provide even more excellent care for our equine friends. I've been a client since 2009. Many of my horses have been taken good care of by this hospital from surgeries to you name it ... they took excellent care of my horses. At one time, Steinbeck was the best. In 2023, my horse colicked and I asked one of their vets to come out. The vet that came out (Kayla Dykstra) was incompetent and uncaring. She couldn't scope my horse and blamed him. Lots of blood later and stressing out my poor horse (from her trying to get the tube in him) I told her to stop. She then informed me that he, my horse, had a growth in his throat which was preventing her from being able to pass the tube down his throat. Ridiculous - my horse has been tubed many times before and in fact, one of the vets at Steinbeck, indicated in her notes (2010) when she tubed him there was no issue. Dr. Dykstra then told me if she had to come back, she would have to put him down because he could not be tubed. Talk about UNPROFESSIONAL and downright STUPID! Of course, they charged me for tubing and when I tried to discuss with the office that I didn't think I should pay this since it wasn't done, they went "dark" on me for over a year of me trying to resolve this matter. Oh, they could keep calling me and threatening me but they wouldn't address my concern nor would they speak to me. Finally, last week, the receptionist left a nasty message on my voicemail saying they were going to send me to collections. Excuse me ... I'm the one that has been asking for a resolution. Steinbeck was ignoring me. So, today, I called them once again since they refused to answer several emails I sent them earlier this week. They never returned my call but sent me an email indicating they reduced my $785 bill by $81. Really? just $81? I'll pay this but I'll never recommend them. It's really too bad ... used to sleep better at night knowing there was a great team available if needed ... found another place. read more

I have been a client of Steinbeck for the past 25 years, and they just did one of the most disturbing things I could have ever imagined related to a billing error they made over 10 years ago. I had an insemination procedure performed on a mare of mine in beginning 2011. It was difficult, lengthy and costly, but successful and all charges were paid in full. Last year they sent me a related $36 bill that they admitted was an original oversite on their part and I ignored it and assumed it was the error they had admitted it was. Who would pay an invoice that was 12 years old. They are now charging $216 for the $36 invoice due to what they are calling late fees and interest. I could care less about the $200, and I have probably spent $50,000 at the clinic over the many years as a client. I tried to reason with the representative on the phone, but it was to no avail. Anyway, I was just threatened with having it sent to collections, so I paid it, but they have lost a long-time client over it and I will be sure to let all I know in the horse community how this was handled. Very sad, to say the least. Dr. Alex called me, and we both appologized. Yes it was an error, probably on both our parts, but I was very appreciative of her taking the time and extending the effort to make it right. read more

My regular vet wasn't available. My miniature horse was showing signs of colic. My other back up vet Dr Towes retired and sold his practice to Steinbeck. So I called them. I got a vet that listened to his lungs, heart gut and was charged 167.50 for a colic exam. He didn't even check the teeth or the temperature. All my mini horse was given was a shot of banamine. I tried to pay my bill before he left and he said the office has to send it. I got ahold of my regular vet later in the day. She asked me what did the vet do? Did he scope him, oil him? What was his temperature? I told her he did nothing except give the shot. I accept the other charges but I do NOT accept the colic charge - when I called to discuss it. I said he did a routine exam. I explained what he did for the visit and she said she is not a vet and they don't have a code for a regular exam. I won't be calling them again! read more

Dr. Loppnow is 5 stars. That man is solid gold from his communication, to his bedside manner, to his knowledge of veterinary medicine. He came out to our ranch in Watsonville where I thought we were going to have to euthanize my mare after she got herself into an accident with a fence. He was able to pick up her rear end and help her in the trailer (amazing strength, and much needed at that time in the dark). He saved my mares life in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve. I wrote a glowing review ten years ago and sadly this practice has changed since being sold to Avanti. New reviews need to be posted and I doubt they will be five star. Dr. Durham and his wife left. They both are excellent and this is a loss for our horses. I wish he'd go into private practice here. Prices are up. Billing is very hard to understand in the format used. Check carefully. Vets now seem pushed because not enough of them. One of my horses was there for a week. Her feet weren't picked. I couldn't believe that wasn't part of protocol. Dr. Eastman has done several surgeries on my old mares as did Matt. Vets with decades of experience. This makes a difference! I've heard from so many who are unhappy with treatment or charges. We really need a hospital in this area of so many horses as Davis is a long haul with a horse. It's almost as if Avanti knew this and just like anything that goes private to corporate, they are taking advantage. I hope more of you post your stories. I do not want to blame the vets. Overwork and rushing to accommodate can lead to bad decisions. I don't know the inside story of what they are dealing with so I'll reserve judgment. read more

Dr Dykstra has been one of my horses main vets from this clinic for several years now. Last week my horse came down with an acute lameness on 2 legs and hurting over his whole body, he could barely walk. Dr Hibbits so kindly saw him on an emergency appointment at my house quickly after I called, started him on a high dose of Bute for a few days till he was sound enough to trailer. Dr Dykstra saw him at the clinic and was, and always has been, so easy to educate me on step by step diagnostics in the best interest of my horse. No questions were left unanswered and my mind was at ease when we were done. She even went the extra mile to spend about 15 minutes helping me load my horse back in the trailer who was giving us a real hard time. All of their vets are always very kind, thorough, and educational. I always trust them with all of my horses whatever the problem may be. read more

With a lifetime of equine experience in both the professional and recreational Equine world I can honestly say the the Drs and staff at Steinbeck are the finest anywhere. Exceptional expertise matched with state of the art facilities. The level of 24/7 care is unmatched even at the finest teaching hospitals. Surgically - I don't know any veterinarians who put as much into staying at the top of their game while still having compassion and heartfelt understanding for the human side of the equation. Our ranch is 8 hours from Steinbeck - there are closer veterinary clinics for everyday matters. But for any moderate to major issues - we will always bring our stock to Salinas for Drs. Eastman, Durham and all the wonderful veterinarians, technicians and staff. Truly the best in California. read more

I was referred to Dr Steinbeck's clinic by UC Davis Vet. Hospital , where I have traditionally mostly taken my horses. Always willing to give a vet an opportunity to show his brilliance, I called in for an appointment for Xrays. I was not given any opportunity to ask what the visit and fees might be assuming that in accord with the California Veterinary Board they would be reasonable. However, when I received the bills imagine my surprise when I found that they were charging me three times what Davis charges and even charged for a plug into my electricity in the barn. I asked for arbitration , never had a response until I heard indirectly that this clinic had sent me out for collection. Then I realised that Dr Steinbeck had joined forces with Dr Peninsula Vet Clinic(Dr Peterson) with whom I will not do business because of gouging and pricing in the past. I shall ask for arbitration again and see where we go from there. I know what is a fair price and I am always willing to pay it. It seems that folks become used to paying a lot for vet care and some vets know it. It was a shame that Dr Steinbeck came as a referral from Davis but clearly Davis does not realise that he inadvertently comes with a price too high. This rating does not reflect the veterinary care only the business model. read more

We took our horse, who was off her feed, into the equine clinic for an xray. The staff was very nice and professional. They showed us the xray and said that she had enteroliths ("rocklike concretions that form in the large intestine") but they couldn't really tell how big they were because there was nothing to scale them. After the Steinbeck vet consulted with the surgeon we were told that they thought there was at least one that could cause a blockage and recommended surgery. We were told that it would be best to do it right away because her gut was empty, indeed she had been oiled the night before, and that the risks were low. We trusted the vet, and agreed to surgery that day, which was a Saturday. They found only a handful of pebbles; they fit into a prescription pill bottle. My horse had complications from the surgery and was obviously in intense pain and near death when we saw her on Wednesday. We had to put her down. In hindsight the surgery was unnecessary, and killed our beloved horse (our bill was over $10,000). My recommendation would be to not go forward with surgery until consulting with your regular vet and to keep in mind that surgery should be the last resort. read more

Tim Eastman failed to check the teeth on a horse he did a pre-purchase exam on for me. Cost of PPE was $1450 and he rudely refused to refund any of it, depsite checking the horse's teeth being a most basic part of a PPE according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, and common knowledge, despite the fact I told him the horse's age was very important to me, and despite his office staff confirming the teeth should be checked during the PPE. Horse turned out to be not 12, but 19. Rather a gross error, and it cost me a lot of money since the horse is now retired with severe navicular (which he also probably had at the time of the PPE.) Massive fail, massively rude. Would never recommend him to anyone. read more

I can not say enough good things about this group. I had a horse with a mystery lameness, I had another local vet look at him several times with no real answer or treatment plan. Someone had suggested Dr. Eastman should have a look at him. I hauled him to their clinic, had a lameness exam, digital x-rays and got some answers to his problem and a riding program to bring him back. 3 months later we competed in our first show in over 1 year and he was 3rd out of 63 horses first time out! Dr. Eastman did not suggest injecting every joint as the previous vet did, and gave me really good advice for long term results. Excellent service all the way around. read more

They have many excellent equine vets here. They can teach your stallion to the phantom and ship his goods. Their collection services are very pricey and I am not too happy they require your stallion to have an EVA vaccine but they do an excellent job with the collection and process. Customer service is A+ with them, all the vets and the staff are super nice. They offer breeding packages and surgery...facility is very nice and clean. I definitely recommend them! read more

Have been a client for over 25 years and love everything about this clinic. The practice changed ownership some time ago and the transition seemed flawless, with lots of new Vets interning and updated equipment. They are caring, knowledgably Vets and Techs that understand about cost limitations and work with client's so their horse receives the best possible care. Dr. Durham and his Tech, Tiffany are the usual ones who treat the horses where I board and they are just top notch. Cannot say enough about the efficient Staff at the Clinic who walk you through everything so that all the paperwork is understandable. People do feel the services are a bit over-priced, but when you break down all the costs incurred to the Clinic forVets/Techs/Staff/general overhead and the education required to treat animals, it's not so much. Also, if Steinbeck doesn't know the answer to a issue with your horse, they go the extra mile to figure it out and consult with other facilities (including major teaching colleges). I have a background in health care but the equine veterinary world is a new one to me. Drs. Tim, Alex and gang were an immense help in the purchase of a horse for our daughter . It was a bumpy road with six pre-purchase exams on a variety of horses and an ICU stay for a full colic in a horse that was with us on trial. They responded promptly to phone calls, patiently explained issues that were completely foreign to us and always kept the horse's best interest as a priority. I don't know how we could have navigated this confusing world of equine medicine without their compassion and expertise. read more

I lost my horse 11 months ago, after having her as a family member for 27 years. My mare was a patient at this clinic, when it used to owned by Dr. Deter and Dr. Fowler. I've owned four horses, total, and have pretty much stuck with this clinic. The place did change in the last 5 years or so. Dr. Deter and Fowler are gone, and there's a whole new team of young and "fresh" new vets. I've never had a problem with them. Pricey? Yes. But, they've added a lot of new state-of-the-art equipment. Last June, when my horse had severe colic, one of the newer female vets responded to my emergency call. It was on a Saturday. She showed up within 45 minutes. Things were bad, and I had a grim feeling I was about to lose my mare. She was so compassionate, and explained all the options. Realizing that paying thousands of dollars, to try and save her, at that old age was not fair to my horse. I had to make a difficult decision, and I opted to humanely have her put down. The vet (I wish I could remember her name, but I was crying too hard), ended my horse's life with dignity and it went fast. I received a signed card, from all the vets, a week later. I've tried a few other vets, but ultimately, I liked that my horse's records were pretty much all at this clinic. Owning a horse is expensive, period. I'm through owning horses, at my age and financial situation. If I ever change my mind, I'd come here first. read more

Besides the quality work they have done, they have also taken the time to give me all of the information I need to make the right decisions for my horse. And, they have treated my horse like she is their own, including checking on her late at night and early in the morning when I couldn't get out to check on her. They took her on Christmas eve for a colic incident and Tim personally hand walked her multiple times on Christmas day, sent me pictures of her from their hospital and basically made it so I could have a stress free Christmas.
