A coffee cafe I like to stop at from time to time. It's a little pricey for me, so I go when I want to treat myself. The crafting of the drinks is an experience. The baristas do everything by hand for the most part. I really like their chai but make it dirty! It is a little spot located inside an office building. I saw the coffee and had to look as I am a coffee lover. The cashier was vey helpful. She recommended a few things. They had regular ground coffees, flavored and tea. I saw the Michigan cherry coffee and opted for that. The coffee is one of my favorites. It os a medium coffee. Friendly staff and one of the few coffee places near the Henry Ford main campus. Prefer a simple cup of black coffee when the coffee is quality. Usually request extra coffee when doing a pour over. Usually I avoid the specialty flavored coffees: cherry, vanilla, or hazelnut. I can do a light or dark roast. Flavored coffee is not my cup of tea, as the mixed analogy goes. read more

Tea selection was good. Didn't get to try the coffee because oat milk was $1.25 extra (any flavoring is also $1.25 extra), which was a bit too expensive. Not sure why it was so much extra considering oat milk is equal or less expensive than regular milk. I don't appreciate companies capitalizing off of people with dairy allergies or vegans. read more

Stella Good Coffee is a nice addition to the Fisher Building, and a convenient place for New Center Area workers and theatergoers to go for coffee, tea, or a light meal. It's classic ambiance and décor fit right in with the look of the Fisher Building's lobby. Those of you who have followed my reviews for some time may know that I don't typically drink coffee. If I go to a café, it will usually be for tea or kombucha. Stella Good Coffee has a limited menu for non-coffee drinkers along with tea, latte, and juice. I can't attest to how Stella's coffee tastes, but I was able to try several of its non espresso drinks during a very generous 50% discount special for civil servant workers during the month of August. I tried Stella's Matcha Latte, Chai Latte, and Black Tea with lavender. I give a thumbs up for the lattes. The talented barista did an excellent job of making latte art on the foam of my Matcha Latte. The Black Tea is good on its own but can be sweetened with any of the six syrups listed at the bottom of the menu. I haven't bought any pastries, but I was able to try several samples of the chocolate chip cookie and date bar, and I recommend both. Very tasty. Service is friendly and helpful. Seating is limited inside with two tables at the back of the café. There are a handful of tables outside of the café in the Fisher Building lobby. read more

This little coffee shop sits conveniently in front of the Fisher Theater. Having gotten to the theater much earlier than expected and despite having a large breakfast, I was drawn to the lit-up space. At the front of the café, there are stacks of cookies. While they are not baked on the premises, the majority of them are from the well-regarded Milano Bakery. The Smiley cookie looked cute and happy, probably for younger theater-goers, while the oatmeal raisin and date bar appealed to more mature palates. There were also stacks of sugar cookies, chocolate chip, and my fave, the black and white. Usually, I have to have these cookies sent to me from a bakery in New York so, of course, I chose the black and white ones. The cookie was lightly covered in a thin layer of white cream, on one half, and chocolate on the other half. The taste and crisp texture were unexpected but still good. There is no consensus as to what this cookie should taste like so I appreciated this version as much as the ones from my NY bakery. They also provide a variety of coffees and teas but I try to limit coffee on the weekend so I abstained. Luckily, I did not get drowsy in the theater, which, unfortunately, has happened before. The woman taking our orders was extraordinarily friendly. I appreciated her smiling face and positive attitude. A few tables were tucked in the back. A small ledge was at the front, butting the windows. As well, there are numerous tables out front to have a conversation or people watch. read more

Stopped in yesterday after a matinee of Beautiful at the theatre for a hot cocoa. Cold days before Christmas call for big cups of hot cocoa, so how am I to deny myself? Anyway, we made it in before the rush of other theatre goers so our visit was brief but memorable. Memorable mostly because--LOOK AT THAT COCOA! Piled high with whipped cream and chocolate sauce, I had a hard time bringing myself to drink it and ruin its perfection. In fact, I walked with it without a lid for a bit because I had to enjoy that top action before it disintegrated right into the cocoa. Oh, and the beverage itself was also quite good. They advertise Ghiradelli hot cocoa and it was quite tasty. Very chocolatey. I've had Stella's coffee at this location previously and have enjoyed it, but don't recall it enough to really speak on it specifically in this review. But it's a good, local roastery, I can tell you that much. Pourovers are offered, as well as fine espresso drinks. The space, as mentioned, is cute and cozy. Not huge, and there are several tables out in the lobby so you can enjoy the beauty that is the Fisher lobby around you. There's also a bit of seating in the cafe. They have light snacks (a few pastries + sandwiches), coffee and tea related items for sale (including their own beans), and a collection of cold beverages like juices, pop, and water and such for non-coffee drinkers. Service wasn't super memorable but it wasn't unpleasant and there was a line so I wasn't expecting sparkling conversation. Stop in sometime when you're by the Fisher or before or after a show at the theatre. It makes for a lovely visit! read more

This is a cute coffee shop in the Fisher Building that makes a good waiting place for theater goers. I came here with a friend after she won tickets to Hamilton and we had to be there early to get the tickets. The coffee shop had tables to sit at after you have ordered your beverages. The amazing thing was the gluten free options that this coffee shop had including baked goods which never happens. I ordered the cookie and a mocha with almond milk. It was the the right amount of food and the drink came out at the right temperature. We enjoyed people watching as we were waiting. It was nice to be able to sit and and enjoy our drinks without feeling rushed. I did not know that this place existed and now that I do, I will definitely be back. I typically go to a couple of shows a year and this place will now be on my radar as a place to go for gluten free items near the Fisher. read more

I grabbed a small coffee and a sugar cookie for my son yesterday, and they were both excellent! I appreciated the beautifully-curated space and customer service, notably my conservation with Glen. I feel like I learned a lot about the Stella, the Fisher Building, and Detroit over the course of talking for 20 minutes. I was impressed to learn later that he returned a lost laptop to another floor in the building where my wife works. It is clear to me that he takes great pride in his work. However, recent visits have found it lacking some menu items and the regular pastry selection seems to have decreased, so I took a break from going as often. Let's keep a level head about the reopened Stella. For coffee, they perform individual pourovers, a recently rediscovered method that requires you to wait several minutes and to pay the proprietor a lot of money, relatively speaking, for a cup of coffee. I have no reason to believe that the baristas don't do a good job at pouring over. There is nothing wrong with the pourover method; it has the virtues of allowing the shop to offer several different coffees without waste, and, I think, heightening the flavor profile of the roast. If there's any flavor in the first place. Stella buys their coffee from Cadillac, which is a Michigan company, great!, but there are several Michigan roasters who are better at it, like Great Lakes, Anthology, Zingerman's, and Mighty Good. Cadillac seems to be Michigan's answer to Starbucks's large wholesale distribution of overroasted beans. One Stella employee told me that their coffee was customized expressly for them by Cadillac, but the lightest roast tasted burnt. Places like Stella make me nervous because I know how many people want to Detroit and Michigan to succeed, myself included; I also know how people like to patronize small businesses with a quirky, hip vibe, myself included here too. But as important as these qualities are, they do not make the product great or even good. Don't give the company a pass for skimping on raw materials. That said, if you like the taste of Starbucks but you think the coffee should take longer and cost more, try Stella. On the plus side, Stella does carry Avalon's treats and Russell Street Deli's soups. read more

I frequent this coffee shop pretty much every day. The illy coffee is SUPERB but what keeps me coming back are the amazing people that work there! Customer service is always their number one priority. Their cheerful and eclectic personalities are just a bonus to the excellent service they provide. This coffee shop actually inspired me to join yelp so I could write a review for them. I love this place. I will be moving our of Michigan soon, and this is hands down one of the top 5 places I will miss the most about Detroit. ps- outdoor seating was an option and I put 'yes' but it is "outdoor" in the sense that there is seating available outside the shop - but inside the main lobby of the fisher theatre. read more

If you're a coffee snob, stay away - you probably know that Illy is no big deal anyway. Espresso served to me was chalky, bitter and burned tasting. Milk for a latte was far too hot, likely a result of re-steaming already warmed milk rather than starting with it fresh. No panini along the lines of their website menu to be found, only a couple of run of the mill grilled cheese sandwiches. I was somewhat dumbfounded when asked if I wanted the grilled cheese sandwich I ordered to be hot. The grill press used to heat the sandwich was dirty, leaving bits of the black, charred remains of other sandwiches pressed into the barely toasted plain white bread. Service was fairly indifferent, not "super friendly", although I did get a thank you for returning my plate to the counter. To be fair, I did not try any smoothies, juices or other drinks. Perhaps they might have been better. I also didn't try any desserts or pastries but I gather those are made elsewhere so not really under the scope of this review. But overall, nothing was as I'd hoped based on the other glowing reviews you see here, save perhaps that the location is in a nice spot inside the Fisher Building. read more

I'm new to the Fisher Building and have been checking out the local shops and restaurants. Stella is a hit and is my new coffee house of choice. I'm no coffee snob; I just like a good tasting cup of coffee and Stella delivered. I was a little disappointed in my barista. He wasn't rude, but obviously didn't want to carry on conversation, which I tried to strike up a couple of different times. I was the only one in the shop so it seemed normal enough to want to chat with him - he wasn't interested. Oh well. Perhaps I'm just not in touch with the melancholy, jaded hipsters these days. Also, I would have preferred iced coffee on this hot summer morning but apparently Stella doesn't have an ice machine. No ice today. Really? Weird. But nonetheless, my (hot) coffee was excellent. Moderately priced at $3-something for a small, which is on-par with all other coffee houses in the area. I'll be back, for the coffee and hope that my barista has had his coffee by the time I get there. read more

I frequent this establishment almost daily. They are across the street from where I work, and the coffee is wonderful. They serve Illy coffee (if you're a coffee snob, you know how awesome that is), plus they have pastries from Traffic Jams, as well as bagels and sandwiches. Stella's a great place, whether you're just stopping by to grab a coffee or actually want to sit for awhile. It's a tiny space but cozy-- and not too loud- for trying to get some work done, reading, or whatever. I'm not really a pourover kind of guy but they have your standard variety of coffees and drinks plus delicacies from Avalon, your friendly neighborhood bakery and purveyor of the Most Revered Amazon Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie. Probably the best thing is that you can sit in the back or in the front (looking out into the Fisher arcade) or you can sit in the arcade itself (which is kind of like sitting outside but, well, not). You can also get free wi-fi, which is probably the only thing in the Fisher Building that works 100% of the time and 100% properly, in my experience (you know, never mind the doors that don't open, the leaky sinks that flood the bathroom, and the fact that the building just got tax foreclosed). read more

I asked what other teas they had and he said "a white kind and another kind that's not labeled". The guy in front of me waited for his cookies for forever and had to remind the guy. I would love to give their coffee 5 stars, but the staff is consistently rude. I frequent this coffee shop because of my work location but the attitude of certain staff members is unacceptable. The only coffee worth drinking in the New Center area. However, this really is a 2.5 star shop, but I had to round up. My drink of choice is a vanilla americano, which I get quite frequently at this cafe in the mornings. Sometimes it is excellent, other times it is bitter and burnt tasting. The inconsistency in the quality of their espresso drinks is disappointing. However, I believe it has little to do with the actual brand of espresso (Illy) and more to do with the operators of the espresso machine. In any case, the reason I rounded up is because Stella Cafe is literally the only place in the New Center area where you can find high(er)-end coffee and pastries. The only other choice is Detroit Donut. So it is indeed, as one other reviewer stated, a rare "gem" in the area. Note: I can't speak for the sandwiches as I have never had one. However, the banana bread is quite good and there is a good selection of juices as well. We were early at the Fisher for the matinee performance of Book of Mormons Since we missed lunch getting to the Fisher early to see if we could get tickets (we were successful), we decided to have a sandwich at Stella's. The place is a little "hole in the wall" in the building and we were a little reluctant to even go there, but the sandwiches were terrific. I had a Rueben and my wife had a Turkey roast. They were both great and reasonably priced. The Rueben was toasted on rye with a lot of meat and kraut and a great dressing. The turkey was fresh and well prepared on wheat. The ambiance is not great, but if you can get one of the two tables looking out to Grand Boulevard it is tolerable ( there are only 7 tables). I don't think you would go here for a romantic dinner, but for a bite to eat before the matinee play---- it is perfect and I recommend it. read more
