Update: I brought this purse to another shop called Pop's on De La Vina. They charged the same price and was able to fix it. In comparison to the fix that Step n Out did, it's a far superior job. Goes to show the craftsmanship is lacking at Step n Out. I can't speak on their shoe repair, but I definitely wouldn't recommend you fix your bags & purses at this store. --- I brought in a vintage purse that had a strap torn. He said he could fix it and had opened it to sewed it back on. I paid $30 up front before seeing what the job would be like. No deposits allowed. He was friendly during the visit and is a one man show. The repair was done in a timely manner.. but, then I use the bag for one day and notice it's tearing again. I go back to him and now he says that he can't fix it and that it's tearing because the leather is old. He had me compare my soft leather to some other harder leather he had in store. He said, "see your leather is old" He told me to just try whatever leather he had in there. I'm bummed since it's the same type of tear that the bag originally had post fix! And now he's telling me it has to be fully replaced. I would've appreciated him letting me know the latter the first time and now the same issue occurs, and I have to pay to fix it again or look into straps similar online somehow. He didn't offer to try to fix with a better method (i personally think he could've cut the leather strap closer to where it's less worn before sewing it back). Ultimately, he didn't tell me that the leather was too old to repair the first time or consulted in methods of repair with me and just took my money. I feel jipped. read more

It can take a while for a business under new ownership to recover from poor management and low Yelp ratings, so I want to chime in here with a 5* review to help out! This afternoon, I brought a leather boot to Step-N-Out. The rivet holding one of its buckles in place had ripped from its spot, and there was no way I could easily fix it. Luis greeted me at the counter and took a look. I asked if it was something he could fix, and he assured me it was. I requested a quote and he said $20. While I have no reference point, that seemed fair and I agreed. He inquired if I could come back the next afternoon for pickup. With an unpredictable work schedule, I said I wasn't sure. Seeing my hesitation, he quickly offered to fix the boot that very afternoon--I could return to collect it in under two hours! I left and came back again later and there was the boot, all fixed. The patch job on the leather was solidly done and the rivet back in place. I paid $20 in cash, Luis thanked me for saving him a card transaction fee, and after some cheerful banter about good quality shoes, I left. Wow! So happy with the work Luis did on my leather soled Italian sandals! They were too long for me so he shaved off about a quarter inch at the front and added rubber soles. They fit perfectly now. Luis is great at repairing leather goods (shoes, accessories, etc) and he's made a custom leather sheath for my expensive fishing knives. The price was fair and he did a great job. So far, I've only had positive experiences at Step-n-out. Keep up the great work Luis! One example of a custom fix was when he added a nice soft leather cushion for the heel/tendon area of my shoe. The shoes were new but without Luis adding a small leather patch to the back of the shoe did it make wearing the shoes worth it. Otherwise, I couldn't have worn them because it had a course stitching that was irritating my skin. read more

Because they don't make shoes like they used to, I was super bummed when some of my heels broke. Here is my experience: During a five minute interaction at his store he managed to verbally abuse me and actually used profanity to kick me out of his store. For example, I asked Mr. Kim if he would help me select shoe inserts for my new set of shoes. He told me I would need to take a $79 insole test. I declined. Then I explained, my budget is $50. I asked him, what is the difference between a $19 dollar shoe insert and the $80 dollar insert? Is there a middle ground model? He said, "you ask too many question." Then began to insult me using profanity as he kicked me out of his store. He shouted! "F You" "You too cheap" "You get out store" "You get a fcuk" "F You" HARRY KIM doesn't deserve to be in business. My wife had a favorite pair of ankle boots that got the Labrador treatment. ( Basically treated as a chew toy ) and had the leather on the heal tore up among some other chew damge. I have carried them with us to five states and three years. Anytime I saw a shoe repair place I would take them in and see if they could repair them. No one would touch them or even bother since they were "department store" shoes. Henry looked at them, quoted a very reasonable price to fix the shoes and match the leather, as well as treat/condition them both. A week later we picked them up and you would never know they were damaged. The work is outstanding, the leather was matched/dyed perfectly and they are ready for more wear. They do outstanding work and willing to do work that most places won't even seem to touch. And do it well. I had no problems with the customer service, they were polite, direct and efficient. Wow, where do I begin. I wish I had read the yelp reviews before buying anything from this man. First off, Harry is a horrible communicator with his customers. I walked in to his store to buy shoe insoles for my pronation, He tells me I need to take this test that will indicate what kind of pronation I have. Me being dumb I went ahead and took the test. Before taking the test he told me I needed to pay $30 but I will get the money back if I agree to buy the inserts. What? I went ahead and said OK because my feet were hurting and I needed inserts and he wasn't going to sell me them unless I took the test. The whole test and the inserts cost $79, and that is what I paid. He then refunded me my $30 that I had paid in the beginning. Such a weird thing. Obviously he has had people walk out on him during the process, and he just wants to make sure he's going to get his money. I would not recommend this place even to my enemy. I guess I had a different experience than most of the people who went to the store. I was greeted by an older Asian woman when I went in to get my heels on my dress shoes replaced. She even offered to be really flexible when I could pick up my shoes and that they would consider returning my shoes to me after hours (I typically get off around work around the time that they closed). The quality of their work here is the best, I have brought several pairs of bench made shoes Bruno Magli Platinum, LV, and Van Bommel Nobel Blues for soles/'insoles, heels, and polishing. The work is top notch but is also pricey, but then again it is located on State Street and on shoes that cost $800+ to replace it does make economic sense. True there is a bit of a language barrier. It is fantastically entertaining to watch them light up the mooches complaining about on the repair costs on sub $150 pair of shoes... why in the world would you even bother having cheap shoes service/repaired? You deserve to get berated and slapped around a bit, it is good for your character. They are happy to quote the cost ahead of time; and you know what your shoes cost when you bought them. read more

Horrible place the owner was very rude. Super high priced items. It was my first time in the shop I walked in not knowing where the item I was looking for was. When I found it I picked it up to read the back for instructions the owner gets into my face snatches the item off my hand and placed it back on the shelf so F****** rude!!!
