I found Dr Langer very willing to investigate all options, including checking for allergies, prescribing Armour and adjusting prescriptions based on how you feel. This is a huge relief after the normal "not much else to do for you" reaction we all get from the average dr. However, I won't be going back to his office. I have run out of medication several times in a row over the past year because refill requests are not processed. Repeatedly leaving me without meds is inexcusable, and entirely avoidable. I am updating a previous review because Dr. Langer has responded to my concerns about the convenience of getting prescriptions refilled. The office hours still don't seem to have an obvious pattern, but Dr. Langer really does want his patients to get better. I get the sense that he works with a lot of patients who have explored all other avenues to no avail. I saw Dr. Langer back around 1991, so things may have changed since then. He was the first doctor I came across who had some knowledge of CFIDS, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, so I went to him. The good side: he confirmed my suspicions AND he tested me for thyroid problems and started me on hormone replacement for hypothyroidism. This was a huge step. Previously I had had all my symptoms dismissed as resulting from depression. (This is typical for CFIDS, btw, and also for low thyroid.) What I didn't like is how i felt in his office-- in his prescence and with the woman who was the receptionist at the time. When you are quite sick you want someone who communicates caring, hope, and warmth. Both Dr. Langer and his assistant were cold as ice. I think he did, in fact, care, but wasn't able to communicate that. But there's no excuse for having a frigid receptionist who can't crack a smile. I think Dr. Langer was something of a ground-breaker, taking seriously thyroid problems that other doctors dismissed because the patient fell into the current 'normal" for TSH. He did a complete panel. Since I went the tests have become more sophisticated and the "normal" range was adjusted because so many sick people were falling through the cracks, told they were okay when in fact they were low thyroid. Dr. Langer solved on my first visit (so far) something other docs (several GPs, my GYN, and a urologist after painful scoping) wrote off as a mystery. I'd been miserably uncomfortable for about a decade due to chronic urinary tract irritation (burning, pain, false urgency lasting for hours each day, symptoms usually associated with UTI). On the many days it hit, I didn't want to leave the house because I felt like I had to pee all the time, plus I worried that bacteria was damaging my innards. Dr. Langer suggested that sometimes unexplained urinary symptoms can be due to food allergies. Sure enough, it was allergy to capsaicin (found in spicy peppers such as jalapenos, cayenne, chili) and also the similar substance in ginger. After several months of visiting one doctor after another, I ended up in the emergency room for severe stomach pain. I wrote an initial review and almost 3 months later I have to say that this office will not work for anyone who relies on modern technology and a modicum of organization to get their medical issues done! Stu the office manager is tremendously responsive. Having said that, there seems to be a LOT of confusion about test results and records and such, and there is NO technology in their office except a fax machine. A FAX MACHINE! I've been waiting weeks for snail mail test results and Stu god love him, tried to help by taking pictures with his phone camera a emailing to me.....how many HIPAA laws got broken there one wonders? Overall my impression of the office is one of disorganization and confusion. I took great care to send a stool sample, which is expensive and takes weeks to get back, and it was rejected by the lab because 2 of the tubes were expired......Dr. Langer's office gave me the kit. They SAID they called the lab to ask why I was being billed for rejected samples, and and that also, the office had no results and yet the lab told me very specifically that test was expired, and that they Fedex delivered the results they could get, 2 weeks ago. What? So, if you like moving at the pace of molasses and you're not that stuffed with these kinds of things, go for it. Otherwise, find a place that operates in this century and more efficiently and effectively. read more

Dr. Langer is a great doctor. I've been a satisfied patient of Dr. L's for over 20 years; he is an active listener. He diagnosed and successfully treated a potentially serious condition that no other doctor ever even looked into. He has never failed to refer me to other medical specialists when he felt their specialty would better suit my needs. I've never had a problem with Rx refills or doctor callbacks (usually within hours). My son is also being treated by Dr. Langer for chronic fatigue, and for thyroid dysfunction, which was never even tested for by the biggest HMO in CA. In a few short months his health has improved dramatically. I recommend Dr. Langer to anyone suffering with chronic medical problems which have remained undiagnosed or untreated. BGM read more

I was very dissatisfied with my experience with both Dr. Langer and his office staff. Building good rapport with patients is important, but especially so for endocrinologists because thyroid issues involve such a wide variety of symptoms. The rapport with Dr. Langer was severely lacking. I felt uncomfortable talking to him because his demeanor was gruff and judgmental. Also, I brought test results from a previous doctor, and Dr. Langer looked at them and told me that I had Hashimoto's. I told him that my prior doctor had done the blood test for antibodies that's used to diagnose Hashimoto's, and it had come back negative. He gave a vague response, but never acknowledged the contradiction or made any further efforts to clarify my condition. I had already decided not to go back to his office, when I was checking my credit card statement before paying it. I noticed that his office had charged me $150 for the visit, although as a follow-up visit it was only supposed to be $90. I called the office and his receptionist was very apologetic and refunded the money. But $60 is a considerable sum, and if I hadn't happened to check my statement I never would have known that they were overcharging me. read more

Dr. Langer has, quite literally, given me my life back. I was SO TIRED ALL OF THE TIME before I started seeing him. I have two young children and could not keep up with them. My HMO doctor tested my TSH and said it was CLEAR that I had thyroid disease because of steadily increasing TSH levels, but that he wouldn't treat until I was above 5. Crazy. I'm so grateful that I decided to save the money to see Dr. Langer. I have so much energy now...literally, everything feels different. I recommend him highly. read more

I had radiation treatment for 3 days in a row. After that treatment I began to gain weight.(I have never been overweight in my life) I have also been a very active person, joyful, positive and energetic. After the radiation, I began to gain weight. I gained a total 40-45 lbs. I felt as if I lost myself completely. I remembered hearing Dr Langer on the radio years ago and I was already taking thyroid so I purposely remembered his name in case I needed to see him. Thank God for Dr Langer. I not only feel like myself again, but the weight came off and I am back to hiking/running 5 days a week. This has been one of the worst experiences I have had with anyone in the medical profession. If I could give them zero stars I would. I shelled out over $1,000 for nothing! Only to have to start the whole process over with a new Endocrinologist who values their patients time, health and money. Dr. Langer does not accept insurance so the first initial visit was $390.00. Then followed by monthly over the phone visits which cost $90.00 a call every month when I needed a prescription refill. Not to mention four lab trips which I also paid out of pocket even though my Thyroid levels had completely stabilized. I consistently ran out of thyroid medication and would spend hours and hours every month trying to get a hold of someone in the office to get a refill. I even sent the Dr. a letter addressing my concerns to then again have ignored the following month. There is no communication with the office, no email or staff ect. The office keeps very irregular hours and is only open 2 to 3 days a week for half the day. It is near impossible to ever reach anyone. You are forced to leave messages with a answering service and my calls where never returned. This is a big concern to someone with Hypothyroidism. You should never be without medication that you are going to be taking for the rest of your life and having to shell out $90 for a phone consultation every month in order to get your prescription refilled is absolutely outrageous. I feel like the Dr. is just out to make as much money as possible off of his patients and not concerned with the health of his patients. Do you self a favor and see another Doctor. This man saved my life. I love, love, love him. My previous Endo never believed a word I said when discussing my thyroid issues. Every time I described how I was feeling or symptoms I was having, the answer was "impossible..you can't be feeling that way so quickly" or "impossible...it must be in your mind". I appreciate that Dr. Langer doesn't outright dismiss my feelings and symptoms. Instead he uses them as a gauge of my recovery as opposed to only looking at the numbers in my lab results. I called to set up my first appointment with Dr. Langer and the brief phone call experience of making this appointment with his staff was so horrible that I am not going to see him, and will instead find another doctor. The staff member could not answer a basic question about whether my condition was suitable for Dr. Langer. The staff member then shared that he had the "horrible" condition of hypothyroidism himself and had been a patient of Dr. Langer's for many years. I was not calling to learn about the staff's medical history and was offended at hearing hypothyroidism described as horrible. The staff person then gave me an appointment time, and when I asked for the office address for the appointment, he could not provide the address. He had to call me back to provide the address. This was for a 40 min. initial appointment that would have cost a whopping $300. I have never been treated so poorly by a medical office. read more

He saved my daughters life. Doctor after doctor wanted my daughter on psychotropic drugs and we refused to believe she was crazy. Dr Langer asked us to take her blood sugars and voila! Severely reactive hypoglygemic. By the time he diagnosed this she should have been dead or in a coma with blood sugars in the 40's. She suffered for two years and he solved it in 2 appointments with blood sugar checks and a diet journal. Not everything is because people need happy pills. Dr. Langer has helped me considerably. The endocrinologist that had been treating my thyroid tumors refused to acknowledge that I was hopelessly tired, gaining weight and not at all like myself. He stated that it had to be due to something other than my thyroid. After a few visits to Dr. Langer, he was able to modify my medication as well as identify a few other issues. What a difference! We are so thankful for Dr. Langer. It is correct that he doesn't take insurance, and he is in big demand but he is worth it. I took my 7year daughter who was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Hypothyroid to see him. After checking around I found out this is way out of line. Most doctors give a six to twelve month script and "offer" not demand you return as you, the patient, feels the need. My baby was born with a serious heart condition and she needed an urgent surgery. Dr. Langley saw me before the surgery but barely answered my questions. He never showed up again and I was told he was traveling and will schedule the surgery in 2 weeks. It never happened. After struggling with hypothryoid issues for 3 years, I found Dr. Langer on the web, read his book and made an appt. His approach is holistic - includes vitamins, diet and food allergies based on lab tests. Majority of doctors prescribe standard dosage of thyroid meds which may be intolerable for some Hashimoto patients... dosage needs to be lower to find level which body will accept. I had jitters, insomnia, hair loss and anxiety with 50 mcg of thyroxine.. Dr. Langer started me on aqueous T4 solution starting at 3 mcg and worked upward to find my level of tolerance which varies individually. I recommend him to help diagnosis and treat thyroid and other glandular issues.. these are delicate and individual and he knows how to tailor treatment based on your own situation. His office is 4 hours from my home but well worth the trip and expense if you want to find a treatment for your condition. He's a miracle worker. read more
