I got a really bad vibe from this dental surgeon and would recommend that people go elsewhere. I was refered to Dr. Needle. I waited in the waiting room for the typical amount of time one would expect. The staff never talked to me (could have been an off day) like I see in some of these other reviews. I went in to get scanned and was told to wait again. Dr. Needle came in, said hello, and told me I need to have all four removed. It was literally within 2 minutes of meeting him. He seemed to only care about doing the proceedure. I am a student and started asking questions about cost and the actual necessity of doing all four. He was very quik to try and sell me a credit plan through his company. I told him that I was really proud to be debt free and wasn't interested in payments or credit of any kind. He completely disregarded that statement and continued to try and get me on the payment plan! I literally told him three times that I wasn't interested in the plan. Some more details: All of this took place within 5 to 10 minutes of meeting him and I was out the door. He didn't seem to care about anything but trying to push the surgery and payment plan like a hustler would. Again, after the waiting room, I was in his office for 10 minutes tops. I got a bill in the mail for $250 for a consultation fee! To summarize: If you want a cold/hustler like dentist and don't care about cost, Dr. Needle seems like a competent surgeon. read more

I totally agree. This dentist does not care AT ALL. I had my wisdom teeth pulled by him over a year ago and they gave me no pre-op instructions, so I showed up and they sent me home b/c I had drank water in the AM. He said to me "well don't you know you cant eat". No I don't know b/c I have never been put under! I came back the next day and he was an hr late from driving in from Malibu in the AM. I was not given a syringe to fill with water and flush the gaps out, I ended up in so much pain and then lectured me about keeping the area clean... you I would have had he given ANY instructions. The front desk lady refused to ask him to write me a prescription on more than 1 occasion - she assumed me my pain wasn't that bad (trust me it was, I had back surgery recently and this pain was much worse), I asked about the pain strips that they could insert and she said he didn't recommend. I came to find out that he didn't want to insert b/c he was going on vacation and wouldn't be in the office to remove. I ended up going to a another dentist while he was out and he put in the strips and I left 80% better. This guy has a nice office but other than that I would stay very far away. read more

If I lived closer, this is where I'd be. He is an excellent surgeon and has many years of experience. Sometimes things happen that would happen anywhere you go. There's no guarantee how your body is going to react to a particular treatment. He's very kind and good at explaining what's going on and doing the procedures he does. If you have insurance, which I don't, just rejoice and be glad in it and the fact he takes insurance, which some don't. People, get a written statement ahead of time with your treatment and the cost and there won't be any surprises. The docs don't do the billing. They are busy doing what they do, which is surgery of some kind in the case of an oral surgeon. read more

Yesterday I went to Dr. Needle to have a tooth extracted. Unfortunately, after a root canal, my tooth had a hairline fracture so it had to be pulled. I can say, unequivically, that Dr. Needle is an amazing Oral Surgeon and his technique in giving me the deep injections were nearly painless. This was the 2nd time I had seen Dr. Needle for extractions and he is so quick! it was over in less than 3 mins! after the numbing. He is a very kind personable Dr. His staff, Erin, is amazing. She gave me all the info that I needed before the appt and was so professional and kind as well. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this Oral Surgeon if you have issues. I had almost no discomfort and the procedure was so quick, it was such a relief. I've had alot of issues with my teeth and have 5 implants. The way Dr. Needle gives his deep injections, it was practically painless, while with other Drs, it has really hurt. My elderly mother had been told by her dentist that she needed a considerable amount of work, including surgery, on her teeth. There were several different options presented to us that were both complicated & expensive. A 3rd-party had given me Dr Needle's name as a referral to get a 2nd opinion. I called his office -- neither my mother nor I had ever been his patient -- and his staff put me right through to him. He took my call and listened to my situation. He asked me to email him x-rays, etc., not once discussing payment for services of any kind. By the next day, Dr Needle had done a full review, called me and made an informed, professional recommendation on how he thought we should proceed. I had asked him to please let me send him some kind of payment for his help and he unequivocally refused me. FYI, we've since taken his advice and were fully satisfied with the final result. I was shocked to see bad reviews on here. Had my wisdom teeth extracted today by Dr Needle and I had the most positive experience anyone could ever have at a dentist. The staff were really friendly and soothing and he was kind and caring and even came out to the hallway when I was being taken home to check on me. I went to Dr Needles in July to get two upper molars extracted. My dentist referred me to him as they said I needed to see an oral surgeon. Anyways, as the other reviews have stated he is very cold and not warm or caring. He recommended I get anesthesia, which I did. I came in that morning and he asked if I had anything to eat it drink that morning. I said "yes, I had a sip of Gatorade and a cigarette," he got very upset. I told him my father said I could, he then asked "who is your father?" I said an emergency room doctor whose been practicing for over 40 years. He was angry. He shoved that anesthesia needle in me in a rage of fury. Then three weeks later, I got a letter I did not understand from my insurance. I called them... I was told he overcharged me over $600! I called and they lied, my insurance faxed them. Proof. Then they "figured it out" Dr Needles Was on vacation and they said they could not reimburse me until he returned. I had to wait over a week and a half to be reimbursed! Over $600 is a lot of money for someone to wait on. If I didn't catch this "mistake" I would have NEVER BEEN REFUNDED. this is a deceitful, greedy, cold, uncaring office with a money hungry oral surgeon. How sad to live that way... I've had a pretty rough journey with a failed root canal that needed to be extracted and replaced with an implant. The periodontist who did the extraction attempted the implant but as far as I can tell, he used an incomplete prep process and nearly drilled through my nerve. My dentist recommended I see an oral surgeon and said he knew of Dr. Needle who has been doing implants for a long time. At the consult, Dr. Needle seemed to understand the case immediately--that my jaw is a bit differently shaped and would simply require a modification in the angle of the implant. He thought anesthesia was a good idea given the previous rather traumatic experiences with the periodontist. I totally agreed, and although I did experience some nausea from the anesthesia, it was definitely the way to go. I went to sleep and woke up 20 mins later with the implant done. He uses the latest technique for implants (fear not that he's been doing this a long time--he's up on the latest techniques), so instead of creating an incision, he just does a small puncture and places the implant and post with a cap on it at the same time (also saving you a second surgery to place the post). The incision is what causes most of the pain, so by not doing an incision, the recovery is almost painless. They gave me a prescription for a narcotic, which I filled and totally didn't even use. I took two Advil when I got home, but that was it. Almost no pain from the whole process. I see some negative reviews for Dr. Needle, but I think people just need to chill out a bit. He's not a server at a restaurant who's there to cater to and flatter you. He's a surgeon and a darn good one, so if that's what you're looking for, you won't be disappointed. read more

This review is for the front desk staff receptionist. I booked an appt here a month and a half ago and they gave specific instructions for my daughter to fast for 8 hours before coming in. We get there and Dr. Needle takes another X-ray even though we told him that our daughter has already been given an X-ray and it was determined at her primary dental office that her teeth in the back should be extracted. Anyhow after looking at the X-ray he took, he said the extractions would take place and to book an apt. I told him that I booked the appt thinking it would be done today. He says check with your insurance for approval. Long story short, why the heck would they ask my daughter to fast if they had to check for coverage first?! Anyhow a month and a half later and there is still no approval from the insurance company. The staff here never made attempts to get to the bottom of things and get the approval despite me calling them multiple times. The insurance company according to many representatives (because I called so many times) says a claim was never submitted. Today I just got so sick of calling around and dealing with an incompetent receptionist who doesn't know how to do her job. Now I'm taking my daughter to another oral surgeon and they just lost my business. This place can't even do the basics! read more

bad, bad, bad oral surgeon. Did not have yelp back when he treated me, but I looked him up because I will never forget him and how I was treated. I have a constant reminder of Dr. Needle to this day since I have had nerve damage on the one side of my tongue from his removing all 4 of my wisdom teeth. After my procedure I experienced a common complication of dry socket, I called his office many times saying the pain was getting worse, each time they just kept prescribing me more narcotics. I continued to take these pain meds for 3 wks, at one point he switched me to a stronger pain med thinking that would do the trick. Pain still was there and I was sick of being drugged up for 3 wks. During these weeks I asked to be seen, they denied that and said I probably just had food stuck back there and to wash out my mouth better. I then asked if he could just take a look because I couldn't live with this pain anymore and I did not want to keep taking narcotics for pain. He finally agreed after 3 wks and did not even look in my mouth when I came in, gave me something to inject water into my mouth to remove any food particles stuck back there and sent me home. I left his office and called my dentist for help. He told me to come straight to his office, where upon examination said I had dry sockets and they needed to be packed with medicated gauze. I felt better that night and was sent for a follow up to another oral surgeon in the area to have the gauze removed later. Off of pain meds right away. My dentist said he was shocked that Dr. Needle didn't take care of this issue sooner. When I had asked Dr. Needle if I possibly had dry socket because my symptoms had matched the description of possible complications of dry socket, he just laughed at me and said I did not have that. I then had questioned the lack of feeling on the one side of my tongue to Dr. Needle and he said it would probably come back. My follow up with the other oral surgeon came and I told him my story. He said that Dr. Needle was probably having a bad day. I asked him about the loss of feeling on my tongue and he said that is a possible complication as well from wisdom tooth extraction that hopefully it would come back, nothing they really could do about it. I went to this, Dr., years, back, and had a horrible experience, and from reading the reviews, I can see he's still the same unethical, uncaring, person that he was when I went to him to have a tooth pulled. I was given no prescription for pain medication, on leaving the office to go home. I do not remember anyone giving me instructions for aftercare, and from what I remember, the extraction, itself, was not exactly pain free. Well...I have to say, I am COMPLETELY shocked by the negative reviews and so happy that I stuck to my own vibe and went ahead and got my surgery done here. Let me start from the beginning, I needed to get a tooth extracted and since it was in a somewhat noticeable place, I also needed to get that tooth replaced. I was referred to two people by my Dentist, Dr. Wong. I called both places but decided to go to Dr. Needle. He called me back personally, which I was very happy about. He knew that I did not have insurance so he said he would work with me on pricing, as dental implants are EXTREMELY expensive. He waived his initial consultation fee and also said that he would see if my x-rays from my dentist would work so that I didn't need to get more done there, and the office called me back to let me know that they would work fine. I did not make it to my first initial appointment (my fault, I got the days mixed up) and when they called me to see if I was coming, I was so upset that I missed it and the receptionist was so lovely and said that it was no problem and immediately rescheduled me. Never once did I hear any type of attitude or negative response. I went in for my consultation, filled out paperwork, and was in with Dr. Needle pretty quickly. It was not a long consult, but he did take the time to show me a video of what a Dental Implant would be and answered any questions that I had, which I had very few. If I had more, I am sure he would have answered them in detail. I did research a few other places but for some reason, I had it stuck in my mind that I needed to go there. I forgot to mention that, since it is a pricey procedure, I decided to wait for the healing process to finish then get a crown as opposed to an immediate temporary crown (which would be an added fee from my Dentist). Since there would be a space there, Dr. Needle called me personally (even though I had spoke with the receptionist) to confirm that is what I wanted. He just wanted to be clear himself. I find that extremely hands on. I just had my surgery 3 days ago, and after my experience I was so shocked by the negative reviews that I signed up on Yelp just to write my experience. The surgery went SHOCKINGLY easy. I was so scared and definitely knew from the beginning that I wanted to be completely knocked out...when I came in for my surgery, I was told that I would not be knocked out, but put into a "twilight sleep". I was definitely a little more anxious after that but at that point, I just had to tell myself that I would be ok, and it would be over soon. Boy, was I right!! Dr. Needle came in, in a UCLA surgeons cap which I was very happy about and I wore my UCLA shirt because my Dad went there, and was nothing but attentive and nice. He did tell me that I would be so amazed at how easy this would be, but I wasn't gonna believe it until it happened. And it definitely happened. I had breathed in the gas the whole time, and he gave me an IV sedation, which he said was the hardest part. That was the ONLY thing I felt. I did not even feel the shot to numb me.I could not even tell you when he extracted my tooth, I did not even feel pressure. The only reason I knew he was doing the implant was because of the drill, which he let me know that it was going to make a noise so that I was not alerted. He constantly asked me during the surgery how I was feeling and kept calling me "Kiddo" which for some reason made me feel really comfortable and safe. The surgery was over in a snap, literally. It was so quick. My mom was in the waiting area and also mentioned that the receptionist was so nice, and chatted with her on/off the whole time. After surgery, I stayed in the operating room while they cleaned up, and every single nurse asked me how I was feeling more than a couple times. They then took me to the pre-op room to ice me and let me get out of the sedation. The nurse gave me GREAT after-care instructions and also brought my mom in there so that she would be knowledgeable on what I needed to do as well. I really could go on and on about how great my experience was there. I know everyone's can be different but its really hard for me to believe the negative ones. Right when surgery was over the nurse and I were laughing because it was so easy that I told her Dr. Needle can do dental implants on all my teeth!!! I was in a bit of discomfort the day of at home, which was to be expected. But I stayed up on my meds and antibiotics and now after a couple days, I am only in minimal discomfort. I have my follow up appointment next week and will absolutely be editing my review because I am sure I will have more great things to say. I too am really surprised by the 1 star reviews and all the filtered 5 stars ( don't get me started) I have had my wisdom teeth pulled by Dr. Needle, My daughter had her 4 wisdom teeth pulled by Dr. Needle, my son had some baby teeth removed and 4 wisdom teeth puled by Dr. Needle. We have never had anything less than an exceptional experience ( as exceptional as getting wisdom teeth pulled is). I stumbled across the yelp reviews looking for his phone number to schedule JAW SURGERY CONSULTATION for my son. That's some pretty serious surgery and I wouldn't HESITATE and actually didn't even think about going elsewhere. He came very highly recommended from several dentists and our orthodontist. He ALWAYS takes the time to answer our questions and give direct instructions. His staff is pleasant. I have never had a problem using our insurance with him. I'm totally baffled by the negative reviews. Oh and just FYI it really only takes about 15 minutes to yank those wisdom teeth out and I'm pretty certain there is NO doctor that charges by the hour. read more

I am shocked by the reviews here of Dr. Stephen Needle since my experience was ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT! Both myself (Dr.Needle's patient) and my husband, ( who spoke to Dr. Needle at length about my implant procedure and has a PhD in electrical engineering & computer science), were most impressed by Dr. Needle's competence, professionalism, caring attitude, and follow up. In addition his office staff was most accommodating and efficient and provided accurate information. Dr. Needle always made time to answer my questions-- and, yes, the "follow up" check ups were only 30 seconds to look in my mouth-- because all was well due to his outstanding oral surgery! In short, extraction and implant procedures were thoroughly explained, detailed "after procedures" were in writing as well as verbal-- and the staff was exceptionally personable and caring. Here's my experience: I saw Dr Needle on an "emergency" basis last November for an infected tooth which needed extraction as confirmed by both my dentist, Dr Richard Haber, in Santa Monica whom I highly respect-- and an endodontist to whom Dr, Haber had sent me to confirm the extraction diagnosis. Both Dr. Haber and the endodontist spoke highly of Dr, Needle. I decided to get the extraction over with that same day-- Dr, Needle explained the procedure and offered several types of anesthetic. But I was alone and had to drive home to Palos Verdes, so opted for a series of novocain injections. Dr. Needle's extraction procedure was painless and quick-- I immediately iced (even on the ride home)and followed all directions to the letter-- including salt water rinses several times daily-- and a special blue antiseptic rinse at night. Yes, I had some swelling but that's expected and I iced regularly for the first 24 hours-- the bleeding was minimal and stopped totally in a few hours. Dr, Needle had given me a pain pill prescription which I filled but used only one pill the night I had the extraction. The next day, Dr. Needle's office called to ask how I was doing--and if I had any questions which I did-- and they were answered in a thorough and courteous manner. I was back to eating "everything" in 2-3 days being very careful to avoid putting food in the "hole" and rinsing after everything I ate. One week later, I went back to have the sutures removed--again totally pain free-- and absolutely no bleeding or subsequent infection. Three months later I had an implant put in by Dr. Needle which was totally pain free and healed up quickly. I saw Dr. Needle last Monday and am now cleared to have my dentist make my new back tooth! Dr, Needle followed exceptionally hygienic practices and took every precaution to ensure that I was infection and pain free-- for example, he sent me for a cat scan prior to doing the tooth implant-- all to ensure that a nerve would not be affected causing pain. I am writing to tell others that Dr. Needle is a fine doctor and I would recommend him to anyone! He is a UCLA guy though-- and I'm USC :-) No worries, I wore my USC sweatshirt when getting my implant-- Dr. Needle wore a surgeon's cap with a UCLA logo on it! We both smiled! read more

Had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out and was glad Dr. Needle did it. I did get an infection that hit me at like 4AM on a Saturday morning. By 6AM, he had called in another prescription, had given me his direct cell so if the pain didn't go away to contact him and if need be he'd come in to take a look at it. I feel like he was extremely compassionate and tried to take care of me. If I had more wisdom teeth to take out, I would definitely go back to Dr. Needle. read more

I am happy to give Dr. Needle my highest recommendation. I had a tooth pulled and replaced with an implant. The extraction was covered under my insurance plan, the implant was not covered. My research showed the cost of the implant was in line with what other oral surgeons were charging. Both the extraction and implant were completely painless. I was very impressed by how efficiently Dr. Needle and his OR staff performed during both procedures. The implant procedure is not a "one and done", it is about a year long process. This required numerous visits to check progress, such as bone graft working, implant and bone taking to each other, x-rays, watch out for infection, etc. I never had to wait more then 5 minutes from my appointment time to see Dr. Needle. Once inside the exam room, I noticed all the instruments were already laid out and my x-rays on the screen. The front office staff could not have been nicer or easier to deal with. I have to agree with Tong.G. below. I went to visit Dr Needle a few months ago (January 2009) to have all four wisdom teeth removed. Having just made a career move from London to Santa Monica in hind sight, I now wish I had taken the extra time to find out more about this incompetent, incapable and highly unprofessional doctor. I had so many problems with this practice and feel, out of sheer social responsibility everyone should be made aware... 1) Firstly, I was over charged on my credit card (on the actual day of the surgery) by $300 dollars. I later realized this after I had recovered form short term amnesia (due to the anesthetic they used, which was also never properly explained; rather I signed a piece of paper with tiny font that apparently listed out the relevant side effects and the fact that immediately after surgery they will leave you in a disoriented vulnerable state on your own in a room, even if you may fall or cause harm to yourself). When confronted, the receptionist claimed that Dr Needle does this regularly just in case insurance companies don't shell out. To which she then showed me a huge wallet of checks he had written for the many patients who were over charged. Conveniently they wait until these patients realize and come back to reimburse them; that is 'if' they ever realize. I don't buy the insurance story, as I was present when the receptionist checked all my details with Cigna who confirmed my plan. 2) More importantly I now have 3 fractured teeth. Having completed the surgery mid January I started to experience sharp acute pain in my upper middle molars early on this March. I went to see Dr Needle to share this complaint only to be ushered out of his office within five minutes (without so much as a detailed examination or x-ray). I go to see my general dentist who saw me prior to the surgery and he is shocked to see I have huge fracture lines on 3 of my healthy teeth (I have never had cavities/ decay/ grinding / any problems). The positioning of them (the middle top and bottom molars) are the exact position at which a heavy metal dental instrument is used to yank out the wisdom teeth. Fractures are caused from intense trauma to the teeth (imagine trying to chew on stones) and the symptoms become apparent 6-8 weeks post incidence; again this supports the timing of my wisdom teeth removal and symptoms. 3) I have since been back to Dr.Needle who rather defensively insisted there were no complications during the procedure. Dr Needle was rude, verbally aggressive and completely irresponsible (again, didn't even take the time to examine me thoroughly or to look at the photographic proof of my fractures that I had brought along with me). Straight after this short, and abrupt meeting he called my general dentist, again rather defensively claiming that everything went well. I was then sent a letter, which reportedly claims my general dentist agreed over that very phone call with Dr Needle that the fractures were a result of an independent event; this is an outright lie. Another testament to Dr Needle's lack of integrity. I am currently seeking legal advice as to what to do about my 3 fractured teeth and have reported Dr Needle to the ADA (American Dental Association) as well as the CDA (California Dental Association). I am also seeing a specialist oral surgeon to find out if any of my other teeth have been damaged. I will have to have composites/ crowns put in to all of the teeth that have been damaged. For anyone reading this I can't emphasize enough the importance of doing your homework when it comes to being medically operated/ treated on. Though Dr. Needle is an adequate surgeon, I have never had to deal with a more inconsiderate and self-serving health care provider. He did not take into account my wishes in terms of the timing of my treatment, and instead scheduled exactly what was convenient for him to do. A surgery is often a scary and important event in one's life, and I would urge you to seek a doctor who will actually listen to and support your personal intentions, values, and schedule. read more

I've had two excellent experiences with Dr. Needle and his friendly and professional staff. I've had two implants and both surgeries went great. No problems with infections or pain. Dr. Needle is friendly and very competent. Therefore, I would recommend Dr. Needle to anyone looking for an implant. read more

beive in the negative reviews... dentists and others who get nothing but positive.. i think have their friends write these reviews. anyway.. went to see this guy...he didnt even look in my mouth. took some panoramic x rays, charged me like 200 bucks even tho i have dental insurance. then they billed my insurance and i just found out my insurance gave him 145 dollars, too. they dont even send me the refund!! read more

Believe the negative reviews. The front office people tried to significantly overcharge me for an extraction. Little did they know that I had checked my out of pocket cost before I came in. When I told her that I was being charged way too much, she said that my insurance didn't know the "exact" procedure. Then she went away to consult and came back with a lowered cost giving me some doublespeak bs about my deductable. I left, because I honestly feel that if the front office is doing this to people, they must have their bosses permission to do so. This time they got caught and I left them telling them that even though I'm in a lot of pain with an infected tooth, I wouldn't have this work done by people who do business this way. I also gave them a strong admonishment to get their act together and to not do this to other patients. I can't speak to Dr. Needles ability--because I never let it get that far. But be on your guard if you are going to this office! Call your insurance and get an estimate of what your out of pocket costs should be. read more

Was just there yesterday, what an ass! He didn't believe I have a sulfite allergy and have a doctors note but he told me I had to go to an allergist and spend over $400 so they can tell me that I have a sulfite allergy, before he would remove my tooth! What respectable healthcare pro would be that way. I even offered to pay for the epinephrine that didn't have sulfites but was told no. The worst is I wasted $90 on a consult (that I shouldn't have paid for anyway) where I told him I had the allergy. So after waiting two weeks and thinking I'll be treated, I was told there are no sulfites in epinephrine when it says on the box, potassium metabisulfite! Key word being SULFITE!! He says they are different and if you really have the allergy which I DO, they give you the same reaction! I have had the allergy for 10 yrs and know what it does to me, who would tell me I'm wrong when I've been to 5 ER's for it!! Unless you're rich and are not allergic to anything he won't give you any respect! The only good thing they did was send my X-ray to me. Stay away! read more

He is highly knowledgeable, well educated, stays current with all oral surgery techniques and procedures. He has the latest "state of the art"equipment and technology in his operatory as well as in other exam rooms in his office. He communicates clearly and explains what he will be doing and what to expect. He is always caring, compassionate, gentle, and takes his time with me whenever I've had an appointment with him. He has a beautiful office with friendly and highly qualified surgical dental assistants. His receptionists have always been friendly and helpful with billing, appointments, both pre and post op. Dr. Needle returns phone calls promptly whenever I've called him...even on weekends! He has called post op to check up on how I was feeling. I TOTALLY TRUST his professional opinion on dental questions and recommendations. He's the BEST! He is highly ethical and thorough and demonstrates a strong sense of integrity in all he says and does. He has a Very Fine reputation amongst other dentists and Oral Surgeons as well. If you have to have Oral Surgery, my recommendation is to choose Dr. Stephen Needle! read more
