If you are traumatized and terrified of dental work I highly HIGHLY recommend Dr. Koshki's office!! I am the type of terrified where I cry even thinking about going to the dentist. I cried in the waiting room and when Dr. Koshki walked in. But from the first interaction at the front desk, I could tell this would be a different experience. The staff were all so friendly and kind, and the dental assistant thanked me for telling her I was scared! Then, the father and son dental team reassured me that they would be gentle, slow, and communicate the whole time. His son (also a dentist) cleaned my teeth and was so gentle I could actually relax my body, where usually I am tense, shaking and sweating. The energy was great and everyone was warm, personable and sweet. Additionally, a previous dentist had told me I would need to redo an old root canal, but Dr. Koshki told me that it could wait. I have been a client for 3 happy years. I have had work done in-office with Dr. Koshki within the last 6 months including repairs and teeth whitening. He is a very communicative Dentist, who has a gentle touch to fix or repair oral health - he is determined for you to have he most beautiful smile. The luxury benefit of being a client is that all molds for teeth repairs are done by the Dental Hygienist, Jenni. She is excellent. I have had a few custom molds including trays for teeth whitening gel and a mouth guard. Let me not forget that I finally tried ZOOM teeth whitening that included an hour long treatment. My teeth were visibility brighter after one session. I went back a few times to get my teeth whitening tray molds custom fit. I hadn't been to the dentist in over 5 years. Wasn't excited to go because I've never enjoyed going to the dentist. I NEEDED to go though and went to Dr Koshki based off a friend recommending him. His staff did an excellent job cleaning my teeth and even had me come right back for a deep cleaning. All while explaining nicely how I could better take care of my teeth. I've never flossed nor used mouth wash. Now I have added both to my nightly routine and love clean teeth. I also needed some crowns. Had a huge cavity/hole monster in my teeth and my previous fillings were too big to just keep filling them (I learned this because they nicely explain what and why they are doing things). I like that because it helps me feel better knowing what they are doing and why I have to spend the money I was spending. During the crowns, they explained what each step was and when I was feeling some pain, stopped and gave me another shot that numbed me up nicely. (He's good at making the shot not hurt and keeping the needle hidden to not freak you out). When I went back 2 weeks later to get the permanent crowns put in he made sure they fit perfect and that my bite was spot on. Great Dr. Great staff. Make going to the dentist easier (still not something I love). But something I'll now do frequently. read more

My kids and I have been seeing Dr Koshki every six months since 2005. He is excellent, as are his staff. Friendly, compassionate, and honest. Also - and most importantly - gentle. I think between the three of us, we've had it all -- cavities, root canals, braces, whitening, on and on. Not only have I never felt that Dr Koshki recommended anything that wasn't absolutely necessary, he has been gracious when I had concerns and never pushed any of us into anything that we weren't 100% comfortable with. His boutique office located in the heart of Santa Monica is operated and maintained by a grand total of 5 employees - when you walk in you are immediately greeted by the warmth of this tightly woven team of individuals/family members that you can only find in an intimate office like this one. The equipment is top of the line, the office is immaculate, the staff - patient and kind - all things you hope when visiting a dental professional - but the care and passion that Dr. Koshki and his employees provide turn that "sterile dental environment feel" on its head and you feel right at home. Dr. Koshki guided me through his consultation with the assistance of an inter-oral camera - everything was there for me to see on a screen. He would kindly pause on occasion when I seemed confused to tell me what he was doing, what the medical jargon he was using meant when he called out notes to his Dental Assistant - Jenny, and explained the results of my digital x-rays in detail. My new patient consultation included: an exam, x-rays, and a cleaning at a price that didn't break the bank despite the fact that I had no dental coverage at the time and was paying out of pocket. I'm genuinely confused as to how anyone could give Dr. Koshki or his staff poor reviews. He is the single best dentist I've ever had. I've recommended him to half a dozen people, and all of them reported back with similarly great experiences. They office is high-tech, the hygienists exude competence, the office coordinator deals with your insurance so you don't have to, and - alongside everything else - Dr. Koshki is quite simply an amazing. As for the specific criticism from the one person who apparently had a bad experience: I've never experienced anything like that. I've never been told I needed seemingly unnecessary work, nor has anyone else I've sent to the office. In fact Dr. Koshki has recommended a root canal and/or fillings for me exactly once in the six years I've been regularly going to his office. That was the very first time I came in, when I rushed in with a dental emergency that had me in excruciating pain, and when he stayed open late to treat me. Suffice to say the procedure was the exact opposite of unnecessary. Like many other people in the area, I first found Dr. Koshki via referral. Again, I had let a tooth condition get to the point of debilitating pain, and needed a dentist *now*. I asked a friend, they gave me the office phone number, and I called at about 2pm and explained my situation. The days' appointments were obviously booked - and the day was almost over anyway - but they had me drive in immediately and just extended their work hours. The subsequent procedure was, for all that we were starting late, methodical and unrushed. Dr. Koshki worked through what had to be done to ease the immediate pain, and then he began treating the underlying condition. It obviously wasn't a *happy* experience - having to rush to a dentist never is - but those are exactly the times when you want an experienced, skilled, *gentle* dentist. Dr. Koshki has been my husband's and my dentist for several years and we absolutely love him and everyone in his office. First, I was always terrified of going to the dentist until I met Dr. Koshki. I would put it off and reschedule multiple times just to avoid sitting in a dentist chair. But Dr. Koshki is the kindest, most gentle doctor I've ever met. He takes the time to explain everything and he's got an extremely light touch. And Sharona, the dental hygienist in his office, is also fantastic. I have been a patient of Dr Koshki since he first came to Santa Monica and took over Dr. Kandel's practice. I was originally Dr. Kandel's patient. Dr. Koshki and his staff have always exceeded my expectations. In the past 10 years, I only had one cavity replaced and it was a good experience. I have had two different hygienists and both are excellent. And the office manager is proactive about scheduling, appointment reminders and changes in appointments. I had one experience that illustrates Dr. Koshki's integrity. A couple of years ago, I misinterpreted what the hygienist said about one of my two fillings being 'borderline' about requiring replacement. I showed up to my appointment to have it removed, I sat in the chair, a plastic dam was set up, and the doctor prepared a syringe of Novocain. Then he took a close look and decided that the cavity was ok and didn't need replacement. That incident reassured me about Dr. Koshki's honesty and ethics. read more

I went to see Dr. Koshki a little over one week ago, because one of my upper front teeth and one of my lower left molar were hurting like hell. The kind of pain that drives you bonkers, because it won't let you sleep or talk or do anything without having to have a little sip of water nearby for some swoosching around to somewhat numb the area. Dr. Koshki came highly recommended by my boyfriend, who has been a patient of his for years. So, I called his office. However, given that I called on a Wednesday, the only response I got was the answering machine. I left a phone message and received a phone call back directly from Dr. Koshki. I explained the pain to him and he immediately called the office to set up my appointment for the next morning. I arrived and was greeted with a big smile by Vickie, who showed a really big concern for my wellbeing. The paperwork they needed me to fill out was a bit much to be filled out while still having a lot of pain, but I figured that I came this far and that it would not be long before I was pain free. Jennifer, one of Dr. Koshki's assistants called me into the exam room right after me handing in the paperwork. She was super nice and very gentle in her ways to soothe my worries. Dr. Koshki came in shortly before any X rays were taken. He did a bit of a pre-exam in order to determine where the pain is located. He did a tap here and there and then figured that the upper front tooth was the perpetrator in need of something. - He then had Jennifer take the X rays, which only confirmed that this tooth was the troublemaker. Dr. Koshki also figured that the treatment of the upper tooth could resolve the problem with the lower left molar area, as he explained that the nerves from the top could have aggravated the nerves from the bottom. With little left to do I signed the paperwork for the treatment of the upper front tooth, as it was now time to have it undergo a root canal! All of my worries about having a local anesthesia administered were pretty much gone when Dr. Koshki injected the first dose of whatever it was he injected the gum with. - I know from Jennifer that it was not Novakane, but something more specific. In any case it did the trick and the front tooth was numb, ready to be "rooted". - The entire procedure took about 45 minutes, which was great. There was almost no pain and I was ready to go home without any pain medication. The only thing he prescribed was antibiotics, which I needed to take for seven days. However, his hopeful assumption that the root canal of the upper tooth could possibly take care of the lower molar area did not come to fruition, as the pain in the lower left molar area came back with a vengeance. I did not sleep much that night and was not able to function the next morning. So my boyfriend called Dr. Koski and was told to bring me in right away. We went, I checked in and was seen right away. The next two and a half hours were super painful and even the amount of pain meds he injected into the lower side did not do much. - He had to give me so much Novakane this time that he was convinced my mouth would be numb for hours. Dr. Koski took an X ray of the area and determined that I was indeed in dire need of yet another root canal! Two "rooters" in two days is a bit much, but Dr. Koski was very gentle, kind and super patient with me and my teeth. He completed the second procedure in a little under two hours, which is mainly due to my indifference to the pain medication, which he had to directly inject into the broken tooth. After everything was done and over with, he prescribed some pain meds that we knew I can tolerate. They did the trick for the most part. There were occasional uncomfortable moments, but nothing compared to what Dr. Koski was able to relieve me of. He and his staff are super friendly and caring. Dr. Koski called me directly the following Monday just to make sure that I was okay. His office is run with professionalism that one would expect in any office, but his kindness is taken further with the personal follow ups. His office came highly recommended to me and I highly recommend it to anybody who is in need of a great dentist. read more

I waited until my 2nd visit to review. 1st visit was a simple check up and exam. Let's face it the X-rays are always awkward. Someone has to fit a lead business card in your mouth and shoot radiation at your noggin. It's just weird. The whole damn thing is weird. We can put a man on the moon, but can't X-ray someone's face without this weird metal and plastic harness that looks like it was mailed in from a discount S&M shop. And that's the NEW technology! Do you remember what it USED to be like? I blame science. The assistant? I guess she is the assistant... I don't know the jargon or her title, did the best she could, it was quick & she was very personable and really that's the best you can hope for. The digital display for the X-rays were good and the Dr.Went over it in actual English (not trying to be fancy and speak to me in Latin or some weird dentist code) answered questions, and talked about the next visit... because my teeth were filthy like a fisherman's wife. 2nd visit was deep cleaning (my teeth were filthy under the gum line, filthy) and 2 fillings. Everyone remembered my name. It was like I was Norm on Cheers (without the probable diabetes or crippling alcoholism). I was in and out in 40 some minutes. BAM! He got to the point, and my teeth feel great! Actually, I kinda want to do it again. I don't know what he liberated down there, but it feels so good. Man, clean teeth, who'd a thunk it. I know by now you are reading this thinking what the hell did that guy's teeth look like? Let's just say that fancy sonic tooth brush, water pick, floss, and gurgle juice only get you so far... eventually someone has to stick their paws in your mouth and clean it for real (or go around looking like Beetlejuice). It's like cleaning before family comes into town, sure you vacuum and dust once a week, but you still hire a maid the day before. The only negative thing I have to say is that building sucks, prepare to wait for the elevator, and parking is a hassle (just park in the lot, give up all hope for street parking). Also there is always an alarm going off somewhere in the building. Always. The offices are good once you get inside, but the rest of the building feels like it was thrown up in the 80's and time forgot about it. But, just like X-ray machines, they are not their building. Whatever negative you read in this post is more then made up for by the staff and the service. In fact: believe EVERY nice thing you read about the staff in these reviews, they cannot be over sold- they are excellent. I go back in a few months for my checkup and am actually excited to see what is next. Screw it, I'm not even going to brush. I'm going to eat nothing but Italian Sodas and Carnival grade rock candy- next time I'm going to really give him something to work with. read more
