We had a Zoom call to schedule an appointment for my sister, who has special needs. This office was assigned to us through her social worker, so this was our first interaction with them. During the call, the dentist didn't come off very friendly and seemed a bit rough around the edges. He felt somewhat abrupt, and when you're working with special needs adults (and kids), patience and a warm, respectful attitude really matter. Because of that, I did leave the call feeling a little concerned about how my sister will be treated during her appointment. That said, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming maybe he was just having an off day. I'm hoping our next interaction is a better one. On a positive note, the woman who helped us schedule everything was very kind and helpful, which I truly appreciated. We won't be going into the office for a couple of months, so this review is based only on our initial experience. I plan to update it after we've had the appointment. read more

came to Dr. Rubenstein for a second opinion after being told by another dentist that I had multiple cavities. As a cash patient I was a bit skeptical so I wanted a fresh evaluation. Dr. Rubenstein was extremely patient, thorough, and knowledgeable. After his exam, he diagnosed me with less than half of what I was originally told elsewhere and after I mentioned the previous treatment plan, he stood by his assessment and explained why he didn't believe all of that work was necessary. That level of honesty and ethics is rare to find. My dental cleaning with Venus was also exceptional! She was meticulous and clearly takes a lot of pride in her work. It was one of the most thorough cleanings I've had. The entire office staff was kind and welcoming. Ermy at the front desk was especially wonderful. She went above and beyond to help coordinate and schedule my next appointment with ease. Overall, this is a very ethical, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring dental office. The guy is a total con artist. He advertises a new patient special of $99 for a cleaning and exam, but the whole point of that "special" is to get you in so they can upsell you on more expensive services. I went in for the $99 cleaning they had advertised, and they said I needed a deep cleaning for $1,000. I said I don't want a deep cleaning -- just give me a regular cleaning, and I understand that it won't remove all the tartar. But they refused to honor the agreement for a regular $99 cleaning, saying the only service they would perform on me would be a $1,000 deep cleaning. This is a total bait-and-switch and deeply unethical. I took time off work to go to this appointment, and I lost money in doing that. I wish they had just told me on the phone that they weren't gonna honor the $99 regular cleaning they had advertised. It's false advertising. I'm looking at the other 1-star reviews, and it looks like this is a pattern for him -- it's not just me he did this to. And in his responses to the reviews, he gaslights the patient by citing his positive reviews. And then like a total weasel, he says he can't address the specifics of the complaint due to HIPAA regulations. Dr. Rubinstein's dental assistants and the Dr. himself saved a molar of mine that i had already had a root canal for six or so years ago. i had some other cavities taken care of and was very satisfied with his dental office. I wrote a glowing review for his office back then. I have one complaint and that is that though i havent been back to his office for at least four years i received a bill for about three hundred dollars from his office last month with no information as to what the charge was for. i called and asked and the clerk whose name i cant remember couldnt tell me what it was for but was adamant I owed them. Since i didnt have insurance they had me pay for all work to be done on my teeth in advance. Afraid they would send ruin my crrdit I paid the bill but i am disappointed and hace doubts as to the integrity of his office staff responsible for the billing. This is not the only time i had an issue with his office about payment so i change my 4/5 star previous rating of his office to 2/3 stars. read more

This was an extremely unpleasant experience. They tried to sell me $4,000 worth of dental work when I had only gone in for a cleaning and an exam. I was especially creeped out by how technician kept trying to slash the prices ('Here, I'll take off 1/2 !) and push the list of treatments upon me like some kind of an unschooled snakeoil saleswoman. She was so blatant and tacky with her approach, at the end she seemed almost desperate - trying to peddle the cleaning after all. I suspect they get a commission or a bonus for such bizarre, disturbing tactics, otherwise the doctors have got these ladies under their thumbs. The doctor herself was young and sweet and the technicians were pleasant - just hardcore used car salespeople. It was a good lesson for me though - I'd thought there wasn't a good dentist who accepted my insurance (HMO) within a convenient proximity and I took the suggestion from a very young colleague at work. Not the best referral! I did find the dentist for me - and she interestingly revealed that at the other dentist, their x-rays didn't even show all of my wisdom teeth. It's going on 4 years since my first review, I now use Alan Rubenstein as my go-to dentist for EVERYTHING, every single visit has been excellent. This past year I've had a ton of work done, an extraction, an implant, fillings, deep cleanings, exams, crowns, you name it, I've had it. Alan is fantastic, he's handled all my issues with such precision and knowledge, it's so reassuring. His experience and knowledge shines. But it's not just Alan, the entire staff and office are wonderful, the technicians that do the cleaning, prep, & temporary crowns, and Dr Saadat who is doing the implant, all amazing. And even the receptionists and the wonderfully friendly woman who handles my billing, Ermy - all top notch. It feels like everyone gets along well and everyone loves their job there, the place has a great, professional vibe. I love this place, which is really odd to love a dentist office. I'm just so grateful to have a place where I feel like I get the best care, I trust this place. BE-AWARE... and get a second opinion for suggested major procedures. On my initial (and last) visit, I was told that I had a small cavity/ decay on an upper tooth. The Dr. squinted as he examined the tooth, moving the light back and forth, covering the light with his hand from time to time, as he made his assessment. As I had zero cavities/ fillings for all of my life, (and still zero, from a recent cleaning) I naturally asked to see the area of decay on the x-rays. To paraphrase his response: this type/ size is superficial and not visible on the x-rays. :-/ I finished my cleaning/ polishing with the Hygienist + other Staff, and left never to return. Hoping that this was just a fluke miss on their part, but I'm glad I questioned the call, as I still have a filling-free mouth! 2 stars because the Hygienist and Staff were pleasant. read more

I don't want to make this review too wordy but I hope it is helpful to anyone in search of a dentist in the LA area. The average person, like myself, is not typically educated on all that is offered to you at a simple teeth cleaning appointment. After speaking to two different dentists after seeing Dr. Rubenstein I have been advised that for my age and records a "deep cleaning" should not have been recommended or advised. Flash back to my teeth cleaning appointment with Rubenstein - After being reprimanded like a toddler from the hygienist about flossing, they came back with a laundry list of procedures they recommended totaling more then $1,000!! Included procedures? Fillings for numerous cavities and a deep cleaning! I figured since I didn't know how good or bad my gums really were, I would check the prices. They then brought back an itemized list of what my insurance would cover and what I would be responsible for. I was told my insurance would cover $463 and I was responsible for $199. I went against my husband's wishes, who had been to Rubenstein weeks before and sold him on the same deep cleaning deal, and I accepted. Months later I received a bill from Rubenstein saying that my insurance has decided not to cover the procedure and I would be responsible for the remaining $463!! Flash forward a few months. I recently went to have my teeth cleaned and checked by a different dentist. I warned the dentist ahead of time that I was told I had cavities I needed to take care of. When he came back with the x-rays he was confused with what I had told him. He said I was a "Dentist's dream"!! No cavities and my gums looked perfect. He told me someone my age should never have been suggested a deep cleaning procedure. Go figure. After getting my lawyer involved, who sent many letters explaining I would not be responsible for the remainder of the bill, I received a letter from Dr. Rubenstein stating, "once a patient gives their verbal consent and proceeds with treatment that they assume certain financial obligations." So not only was I suggested and ultimately duped into accepting a treatment that was unnecessary, he's not backing down and wants me to pay half of the $463!! I regret ever going to Dr. Rubenstein and would highly recommend anyone looking for a dentist to do their research. read more

I don't know what the people who say this guy is great are smokin, but I suspect half the population of Venice would be interested in finding out where they can land some of that "medication!" I had the displeasure of having Mr. Rubenstein as my regular dentist for awhile. After being diagnosed as needing a root canal (which is NOT why I'm upset - I wasn't taking proper care of my teeth which is not his fault), I scheduled with him to have the procedure done. What happened during that root canal visit was mortifying! The whole time he was doing this delicate procedure he was talking with someone else about his golf game. Just having a casual conversation with laughs and all! So what happened? The drill bit broke off in my mouth and I needed about $5K in additional oral surgery (from a competent professional) to fix the damage this guy managed to inflict. They had to cut in through the side of my gums after the first attempt to extract the bit through the tooth was unsuccessful. To add insult to injury, when I rightfully got upset with him about this, he just said I signed a waiver and that this was a common thing. I've read up, and it's only common if the operator doesn't use proper precaution when using the fragile drills used for root canals. To blame the manufacturer of the drill bits is like blaming Honda for crashing your Intrepid into a street light pole. And the guy who actually fixed my tooth told me that even with tight canals, proper safety precautions would have prevented a broken file. I could have sued Dr. Rubenstein for malpractice, but decided that it wasn't worth my energy. Thank God for Yelp! Just please make sure to save yourself from his treatments. From the sounds of things, he's using other incompetent people now to do most of his work - not surprising since he had his golf swing on his mind during most of my root canal... he'd probably rather be golfing! Don't pay for his green fees with your health and well being! read more

I really love Dr. Rubenstein. He's a really nice guy, answers your questions and isn't one of those surly dentist types. I've really enjoyed going to his office every 6 months. Even his staff are great, especially the hygienests. My only complaint would be that the dentist (I honestly don't remember which one, just that it was not Dr. R) who did a filling for me when Dr. R was busy one day gave me THE most painful novocaine shot of my life. I was tearing up - uncontrollably crying! Even with the topical anesthetic he gave me. And he just kept rooting around in there and reinjecting. It took about 5 minutes to finish anesthetizing me! And I was so sore and sting-y after the novocaine wore off that I almost called to ask them to write me a script for painkillers. It was THAT bad. I was also a little pissed that he was so insensitive. But I know now to not ask for anyone by Dr. Rubenstein, who is always very gentle and aware of how you are feeling during a procedure. read more

His office's strategy of upselling and overcharging, while also not informing the patient beforehand is a sneaky, greedy tactic. Dr Rubenstein also patronized me for my long time gaps between dental visits, which tells me he doesn't realize the crisis today where people can't afford health insurance let alone pay for any dental issues. His office told me I needed a deep root cleaning, made me sign the forms while i was half medicated and in the chair, and failed to tell me it wasn't covered till after it was done. Plus they still tried to upsell me on the way out the door! "Dont forget, you have perfectly good fillings that we want to replace because.... MONEY!!" Ive never seen such a blatant @#%& scheme wrapped in so much marketing. In addition, i got a text message from his office, asking for personal info and that i should come back! LOL When i tried to respond and tell them to STOP so i would get no more text spam, i was informed that i would be CHARGED FOR MY RESPONSE!!!??? @#%&??? Can you say SCAM? I agree with the other 2 reviewers about the endless gossip. When I went in they were describing, in detail, their rather tasteless halloween costume. Very unprofessional. But aside from the chatter... they cut my tongue when they were doing a filling. It was very painful for several days. I returned from the dentist's office and my boyfriend said that I should go back in that day to show them and talk to them. Dr. Rubenstein (who had not done the filling) convinced us that it was very normal. I am surprised this has such low stars. I love Dr. Rubenstein; he is always super clear and lets me asks questions, is understanding of what I can/cannot get done with insurance/out-of-pocket costs, etc. They take COVID very seriously and I feel safe going there. I got my wisdom teeth pulled here by the oral surgeon and had a great recovery. My one thing is that there are sometimes random fees that seem not to be mentioned until later on (i.e. a $100 xray that they said was 'necessary' pre-wisdom teeth, but not covered by my insurance). I switched to these guys from a more expensive, smaller practice. I figured I could save some money and these guys came highly recommended. As it turns out, this place is a factory. G-d knows how many patients they treat every day. Just look at the amount of patient files lining the shelves in the front office. This means that they have to get you in and out as quickly as possible. You know the old saying -"good, fast, and cheap"-pick any two. You can't have all three. That being said, if all you need is a cleaning and have no gum issues, perio issues, etc., then the 30 minutes they allot is fine. If you have perio problems and they need to spend more time, you're screwed. 30 mins is all you get. I usually need around 45 mins because of plaque and tartar (it runs in my family). They said they wouldn't make any exceptions. When I told the receptionist that I am unhappy with this policy and that I would have to find another dentist, she didn't even flinch or try and convince me to stay. What's one less patient when you have hundreds (maybe more)? You are just a number at this place. It would be nice if you could get to know the hygienist and he/she would be familiar with your history, etc. Forget about that. They have far too many patients for this kind of service. read more

Sitting in my back yard when suddenly at 4:30 on a random Thursday, a molar explodes. I call Dr. Rubenstein's office and they say "come on by immediately." Much to my sadness, the molar exploded due to a bunch of decay underneath an old filling (NOT by Dr. Rubenstein) and I have to have a root canal. My last root canal (again, NOT by Dr. Rubenstein) was a terrible painful long ordeal. So imagine my surprise when the entire procedure was completed quickly and painlessly! I have now been a patient of Dr. Rubenstein's since July and I have to tell you, if you're in the area and you need a dentist, this is clearly the way to go. read more

I've been going to Dr. Rubenstein for about 8 years now, maybe longer. My friend, her daughter, and even my spouse all became patients on the strength of my recommendation. I am such a dental chicken. It literally terrifies me. But, Dr. Rubenstein is kind, personable, and knowledgeable. That puts my fears at ease. I never felt the hard sell that you get from many dentists. He was always able to explain, to my satisfaction, why a particular procedure was needed. The office does not over book. There are lots of good things about this practice. However, my last few visits have been disappointing. The new hygienist and the new dentist, I really find them off putting. The new dentist that I have seen the last few times, hasn't bothered to introduce herself to me at all. I do not know her name. The newer staff seem to implement the hard sell tactics and the catastrophizing of diagnoses that really just do not work for the dental chicken / train wreck of a dental patient that I am. I have gone to Dr. Rubenstein for years now and everything has been just fine but today was above and beyond. I won't go into too much but I had a really bad experience at another dentist (see my review for El Segundo Dental Arts) who I chose to go to because they were closer to my house. Bad idea. When I called Dr. Rubenstein to get the situation fixed and told me what was really wrong. The other doctor was trying to charge me $1200 for various things and told me I had seven cavities. I did the Invisalign program through Dr. Rubenstein and I couldn't be more happy! The staff is incredibly friendly and was always asking me how my teeth were doing from the moment I walked in the door. The place is so welcoming, everyone gets to know you by name, and one of ladies at the front, Heidi, is phenomenal! Even though there may be some questionable dated music (Dr. Rubenstein's choice I'm sure.. ) this place I will keep coming back for years to come. Oh and yeah.. my teeth look awesome! I highly recommend the Invisalign program. It went by pretty fast and my teeth are how I always wanted them! Literally a dream come true. I am a dental-phobic and neglected the proper care of my teeth over the years. Realizing I had to face the music and the dentist's drill, I went to Dr. Rubenstein on the recommendation of an office colleague (three other co-workers see Dr Rubenstein also). I have had substantial work one, and am entirely satisfied with the process and results. His practice administers nitrous oxide on request, staff and hygienists are friendly,efficient, and effective. All phone calls with questions regarding procedure are returned before day's end by Dr Rubenstein. Now I wonder why I was so anxious about the dentist.... read more

So, booked a cleaning and had a tooth that was causing me issues to be looked at. Well I cant say enough good thing about the office. Was able to get an appointment quickly, getting in and seen timely and everyone was polite. I was not rushed, they answered all my questions and did not pressure me into getting anything done that was not necessary. Im booked for my next cleaning and exam in 6 months. read more

I've gone to Dr. Rubenstein a few times over the years. I actually have several dentists that I deal with. A year or two ago a crown fell off my tooth and one dentist said pull it, however the Master Dr. Rubenstein saved it. So a few weeks ago I go through something similar with another crown and one dentist said pull so I go to Dr. R to see what he can do. He checked it and said maybe I can save it....So I go back to see what could be done....bottom line he said he couldn't save it and of course I'm not feeling that because it's a molar....and I don't want to pay for an expensive implant... The whole point is this man worked with me. I have a cheap HMO and they are PPO. Also this man could have did the work and charged me a lot of cash...his ethics prevailed and I appreciate that... I haven't decided what to do with my tooth but I will be going back again to Dr. Rubenstein... I think I wrote him up in one of my previous reviews... I discovered Dr. Rubenstein and Santa Monica Family Dentistry circa 2002 after a series of bad westside dental experiences as a new resident. Since then I have moved downtown, yet I continue to fight traffic for this high level of service and "workmanship." Quite honestly, if you hate going to the dentist as much as I do then this is your place. (Thank you childhood Dentist for those dental "scars.") I have had pain free, positive and friendly experiences for 14 years. It's my pleasure to be a long standing patron here. I always get honest direction for my dental health and forthright pricing, not just services to up sell. There is nothing worse than getting hustled from a Dentist, of all people. (Yes, it happens.) Dr Rubenstein is an awesome, caring dentist and the office staff is profession, and overall wonderful. In this office - my heart doesn't beat like a puppy going to the vet. In my last visit, I needed some gum work. Dr. Mark Cohen, the resident periodontist, is a technologically advanced periodontist; his work on receding gums is truly amazing. I went from daily pain and agony to pain free, good looking gums. He even fixed things that I didn't know could be fixed. This is a long story - sorry. But if you're concerned about putting your mouth in these people's hands (!!!) read on. Nice up-scale dental office. Nice office and hygiene staff. On the surface it looks good. As for the dentists - Alan Rubinstein and periodontist Mark Cohen - beware! Don't want to go into the gory details, but had periodontal procedure 2 years ago. The kind of thing that makes you want to be fastidious in your dental hygiene so as to never go through this kind of thing again. I can tell you that Dr. Cohen's bedside manner is lacking, but I assumed despite that he knew what he was doing. In subsequent check-ups (and regular hygienist visits) all seemed fine, gums good, no infections. Then per recent last visit with Cohen - he tells me (2 years since the procedure) that the areas he treated need to be treated (i.e., surgery) again. I had had a cleaning a month before, not to mention several cleanings since the last time Cohen had given me a clean bill of health post-surgery. After these cleanings, the dentist (Rubinstein) never came in to check - never followed up on the hygienist's notes that she noted several pockets measuring 6 (whatevers, in dental-speak - a red flag as 2-3 is normal). My feelings upon hearing another expensive procedure was warranted were shock and panic - why had this not been addressed before? (I have a friend who is married to a very successful dentist in NYC who tells me he routinely checks in with his patients after cleanings to take periodontal measurements - particularly with patients with periodontal issues.) Rubinstein did not do this. (By the way, this will mean nothing to you if you have not had periodontal issues and I hope you won't - but you might someday, so you are forewarned.) Apparently this decline in my dental health, which could have been addressed earlier was not. This speaks to a lack of follow-up at best and at worst, incompetence. For some reason, after this last appointment with Cohen I was sent some general survey by the dentist's office - which I answered honestly and was clear about my concerns.... All this to say, a second opinion was warranted as I no longer trusted Rubinstein & Co with my health. When I called the office to ask for my records to give to my consulting periodontist, suddenly NOW Dr. Rubenstein was interested in talking to me. He gets on the phone to give me an earful (very hostile BTW) about the responses I gave on the survey. THAT he cared about! No apology, no explanation for what went wrong. Instead he went on about the "standard of care" he felt I had been given was appropriate. (Oh really? Then why am I in the situation I am in right now?) The decline in my health did not happen overnight...it happened over time. And Rubinstein was supposed to be looking after me. But why treat a problem before it becomes an expensive procedure? That was my takeaway from this experience. Very unethical and sloppy. This rather long story has a happy ending. I found a very responsible periodontist who is going to do everything in her power to avoid surgery. After looking at my chart she told me she could see why this was so upsetting. (This is the 2nd affirmation from a dental professional that Rubinstein did not do his due diligence with my care.) All this to say, if you want a dentist who does the basics, Rubinstein is fine. He knows how to fill a cavity or give you the invisiline treatment that they promote heavily.
