My son attended Stepping Stone from 2022-2024, a little over 2 years, and we both loved it (my son was 2.5 yrs old when he started). Post-COVID and in general, my son had a lot of unexpected difficulty adjusting to the new environment. Teresa was super helpful in finding ways to help my son have an easier adjustment. At one point we were having check-in calls everyday to discuss my son's progress and I feel she went above and beyond to help. I did quite a bit of research prior to picking Stepping Stone and found that many of the schools I was considering were expensive, didn't have an extended scheduled and a lot of times would not even call back. The tuition at Stepping Stone is reasonable and affordable compared to other preschools in the area, and included snacks and lunch for the kids. Teresa is always quick to respond over email or phone, and their availability to be open from 7:30am to 5pm was super helpful when I was working such a demanding job. Stepping Stone has a fun and loving, yet structured, program that they continually improved in the time that my son was there. All the play-based learning is fun, creative and project based, which my son loved. They also had lots of playtime outside in their large play yard with multiple play structures where the kids can really socialize and use their imagination. Throughout the year, Teresa will shake things up and rent a bounce house for the day, have Curiodyssey, the Marine Center or even the petting zoo visit with animals, which was super fun and exciting for the kids. And of course, I cannot forget the bubble lady, super popular with the kids! What I liked most is that I could drop my son off at a preschool that felt like a little home away from home, where he was in a safe and loving environment. The level of structure and learning my son experienced at Stepping Stone really set him up well for his current education in the BSD TK program. My daughter went to this preschool. I didn't like the way they didn't let you go in freely. I chose it because I liked the idea of a home in a nice neighborhood. And we lived close by. The owner recommended that my daughter go to a psychiatrist. I took my daughter out of the school immediately. 4 year-olds don't need a psychiatrist. She ended up being a honor roll student. And a equestrian rider. She excelled at everything. If I would've listened to the woman who owns this business Some doctor could've recommended medication. Which I believe to be a gateway to drugs. When Cassie was older, she said she didn't like this preschool because they make her nap in the room for an hour and they were mean. If this preschool really cared about kids they would provide an area where kids can play after they take a nap. Instead of making them stay there for an hour. Our son went to Stepping Stone for two and half years. He enjoyed going to school, received good education there and made great friends too. They did a lot of fun projects, reading, music, gym, etc. He loved playing with friends in the outdoor playground in the backyard. Occasionally there'd be extra fun activities like petting zoo animal visits or fairy princesses, things like that. The teachers (Kelsy, Priscilla, Teresa and others) cared a lot about his growth, taught him to be respectful, kind and follow instructions. We have a lot of respect for the devotion that Teresa (Director) puts into the care of the kids. My daughter started going to the Stepping stone when she was 3.5 years old, in the middle of the pandemic. We really love it. My daughter is bi-lingual and we speak mostly in our native language at home. After she started at this school, my daughter's vocabulary and her English speaking flourished. It is a play based preschool. Teachers are highly qualified and they work on the development of children's interpersonal skills. They do a lot of music time and outdoor play time which we really like. They are very respectful to children. My daughter really loves going to her school. They do a lot of projects to teach kids letters, numbers and art. They also teach them other cultures. They do a lot of celebrations in school(Valentine's day, independence day, Halloween, Christmas party etc). Once in a while they bring in a petting zoo, bubble artist, face painting etc. It is sad to see so many negative reviews. Teressa is strict when it comes to imposing guidelines and policies. We do need to not send children if they are sick but come on we are in the middle of a pandemic and she needs to protect children from getting sick. Though she may sound strict she has the best interest of children in mind. She is easy to talk to, my daughter is a picky eater, it was easy to work with Teressa to work on it and now my daughter is open to trying different varieties. We were a little afraid of sending our kid to school in the pandemic. They sanitize the whole facility every night. And they have policies and guidelines in place to protect children. My daughter started her second year at Stepping Stone this Fall. As every mother does (and should do), I research and visited most of the pre-schools in my area. Stepping Stone checked off all my boxes- clean environment, amazing play yard and some light structure (meaning not a free for all, optional circle time kind of place). Some reviewers have mentioned the Director and I wish to address this- I have a deep respect for the Director of this school and the efforts she puts into ensuring our kids are in a safe, stable and stimulating environment. The school would not be the same without her! This year we went from half days to full days and my child is THRIVING. I have been able to go back to work knowing my kid LOVES going to school. The other day I asked her, 'who is your favorite teacher?' She said - 'I love teacher Teresa. Well actually, I love all the teachers'. The school setting has the look and feel of a cozy preschool. It's adorable. That was originally what made me think I was the luckiest parent to have found a spot there. It was perfect until I had a different opinion about anything that had to do with my childs experience at the school. Not the right fit for us. The Director was condescending in my opinion & as another reviewer mentioned here, her "my way or the high way" structure was not very collaborative & warm. My daughter was there for five months & while she enjoyed all of the play, the yard, toys, etc (what three year old wouldn't really?), it didn't balance out the negativity I experienced with the teachers & director. My daughter received a "sad face" for not listening to the director at nap time ONE DAY & the director made her tell me at the end of the day "why she got a sad face today" and say sorry to me. My daughter seemed so embarrassed & it broke my heart. :( She was playing with her stuffed lamb that she had for naptime so the director took it away from her & then forgot to return it until I asked her if she had returned it to my daughter after two days. Aside from that, pretty much cold lunches all of the same each day of each week and when my daughter wouldn't eat lunch, I wasn't able to bring anything else for her unless it was in "sandwich form." I couldn't bring hummus, crackers, avocado, any of her favorites & none of these were offered as a healthy snack. Just a pain in the neck to deal with the teachers & director all the way around. Everything was an issue...Couldn't get any answers to any questions from teachers without getting clearance with the director...when my daughter was sick I was told that she had to be "symptom free" before she could return to school despite of her doctor giving her complete clearance to return (she had a common cold). I'm definitely one for following rules & having structure but the way it was gone about here - again with very little collaboration with me - made me feel sad to leave my daughter there each day. I have sent my two girls to stepping stone and we have been extremely happy! One of my daughters started kindergarten last fall and was very well prepared for the transition after being there since 2 1/2 years old. My 3 year old has now been there about 6 months and loves going to school everyday. From what I hear it sounds like stepping stone is more structured than some other preschools and that structure works well for my girls. My husband and I did a quite a bit of research looking for the right fit for our daughter. We thought it was Stepping Stone. Our daughter started here August 2016. We understood the expectations of what Teresa wanted for the students attending the school. We felt that we did our part in trying to meet her expectations. For example when our daughter was sick we kept her out of school, like any parent should. Even when she would make condescending comments about how she's the first and sometimes last one out of pre school. Not sure if that was a jab at us or what. We are working parents, do the best that we can because we work. We depend on the school to guide and care for our child. In January our daughter stopped taking consistent naps. We would get this nod of disappointment from Teresa when our daughter wouldn't take a nap. At this time I asked Teresa if our daughter will get kicked out of preschool for not taking naps. She said no. However, other parents in Burlingame warned me to be careful because Teresa won't tolerate anything that isn't near perfect in her preschool. I kept taking our daughter to school. I continued to check in with the teachers and they all said our daughter wasn't bothering anyone during nap. I even asked the teachers if they think our daughter would get kicked out by Teresa. They all said No and shocked that I even asked. So, I thought it was okay. I checked in with the teachers to see how our daughter was doing academically and they all said she's doing great and improving everyday. April arrived and Teresa started giving me notes with a sad face for every time our daughter didn't take a nap. I would talk to my daughter about it. By week 3 our daughter started ripping the notes into pieces. This was a problem because now these notes Teresa created were messing with our daughters self esteem. Our happy go-lucky child began to change. She began looking for approval on everything she did. Which made me super sad. How can Teresa make our daughter feel poorly about herself because she won't take a nap. Are you kidding me!! My daughter would cry on the drive home. Made our daughter feel horrible about herself. She didn't feel loved by Teresa being a bully with her notes!!! It was very difficult to see that Teresa who runs a preschool doesn't understand that these miserable notes can ruin a child. She didn't care, but she cared enough to send us a note home she wanted to discuss Dhaya's naps. Both my husband and I went to meet with her that following Monday, but she wasn't there. Then I received a phone call with Teresa saying how she couldn't imagine having my daughter at her school for another year. Suggesting how I should search for a preschool that doesn't require naps. I began to cry because though Teresa wasn't nice to my daughter, our daughter loved the kids and the rest of the teachers. Our daughter has been described as a happy, friendly, sweet girl. So for Teresa to say that she couldn't imagine another year with our daughter at her school, broke my heart. What a horrible human being. The part that upset my husband and I was that she did not sit with us to discuss the naps. We discussed them in passing, but never a sit down meeting. So, she skipped the sit down meeting of an actual discussion of why our daughter not taking a nap upset her. She decided to give me a phone call about this. I hung up the phone and both my husband and I began making phone calls to other schools and they were all appalled that our daughter was being kicked out of preschool for not taking naps!!!!!!! I have spoken to many parents about this in Burlingame and they all are shocked that a sweet kid as ours was kicked out of preschool. Teresa said she could try to keep our daughter till June, but we need to find a new placement for her. She even gave us recommendations to a daycare. WOW! Thanks Teresa! What Teresa did to our daughters self esteem, we decided to immediately pull her out of preschool with Teresa. I can't even believe we were planning on keeping our daughter at this school for another year and then bring our son to this school. We will spare our son from this horrible woman. If you are parent that genuinely cares about your child's well-being this is not a place for you especially if your child will be interacting with Teresa. If you decide to take your daughter, Teresa will bully your child out of preschool. She does it with her condescending ways. If you are interested in your child eating healthy food, this is not the school for you. Parents have and are planning on removing their child from this school. Which makes sense. There are way better schools in Burlingame and San Mateo that love and care about your child and won't kick your child out for not taking naps. What a concept. read more

My son went here several years ago. One day I was 15 minutes late picking him up and Theresa the director kicked us out! We all know traffic on 101 can be terrible and yet the dictator said "we were no longer welcome" there. She did the same thing with our neighbor across the street. My son went here for 7 months until I felt the need to find another school. The director is controlling, condescending and her my-way-or-the-highway attitude did not work for me. I know a lot of parents are happy here and I think this is a good place for non-working parents, but it didn't work for me. Good: -The teachers are super nice and they seemed to care about the children -The artwork/projects are cute and creative (be ready for one a day!) -The school is a little house that is in a cute neighborhood -The outside area is wonderful with a big play structure, ride on toys and a sand box -They have a ton of toys to play with -Hours of operation are good 7:30a-6:00p -Lunch is provided (although it's only sandwiches) Bad: -THE DIRECTOR!!!!!- Bad attitude! For me this overshadows the good things about the school. -Strict sick policy (my sons new school only calls when a child is acting sick or there is a fever-not if they only have diarrhea) -Director tried to ban us from coming to school even though I had a doctor's note saying he could return -My son was sick a lot! Since I removed my son from this school, he hasn't been sick once. Our new school has a professional cleaner that comes every night and the kids are seperated by age group in their own classes. -Couldn't bring breakfast for my son to finish (7:30a drop off) -Closed for (3) weeks a year and you still have to pay -No enrichment offered (gymnastics only) -Only cold sandwiches for lunch (a problem if your child doesn't like that) -All children must nap or be quiet in their cot (up to 5 years) -Children are forced to sit at tables to draw or play at pick up time and are not allowed to run to you when you enter the building (our new school lets the children play outside until you pick up) -Show-and-Tell only once a month -No cubbies for the children's personal items (my son loves this in the new school) -No parent teacher conferences (you only know if your child isn't doing well here) read more

All three of my children have attended Stepping Stones for preschool. I absolutely love the teachers. Teresa, the owner of the school, is well educated, very well organized and takes her job seriously. I love that the school is located inside the neighborhood rather than on a busy street as many of the preschools I visited had playgrounds backing up to noisy streets. I also like that the school is small. Another plus for me is that they do not take the kids on field trips. We do enough traveling and local day trips as it is. I hope this helps! read more

Our daughter has gone to Stepping Stone since she was 2.5 years old. She will be going to Kindergarten in August and due to her time at Stepping Stone I feel that she is both socially and academically ready and prepared to start. The year before the kids start kindergarten Teresa starts a pre-school program with them to prepare them for what is to come the following year. The most important thing is that my daughter is happy here. She comes home talking not only about her friends but also the teachers. She often has her hair done by one of the teachers and comes home asking to do Yoga which is taught by another teacher. The school has a defined structure each day. There are times when all ages are together and other times when they break out into their age groups for academic time. They get to spend a lot of time outside where they have a great space for the kids to play in. We have been very happy here and would not hesitate to recommend Stepping Stone to any other family. read more

Our daughter has been attending Stepping Stone for two years and it's been a great fit for our family. I wasn't asked to write this review but I did feel compelled to include our experience after reading a recent review. This isn't intended to challenge anything shared here, only to add our feedback. The teachers are very warm and our daughter speaks fondly of them. They are welcoming and we're greeted enthusiastically every day. When she started at Stepping Stone she was just over 2 and was really struggling with potty training. The teachers worked with us and never made us feel bad if there were accidents (it was a long journey!) and I always appreciated that. We also had a challenging month or two where our daughter didn't want to leave us when it came time to drop her off. This happened around the time our second child arrived so we weren't surprised by the behavior but weren't sure how to handle it. Teresa helped us think of solutions, gave her smiley stickers to cheer her up when she arrived, and carried her over to the window so we could wave goodbye and make silly faces. She soon returned to her cheerful self at drop off. The day is structured so that there are times when all children play together, which I feel is very important. I like that our daughter socializes with all age groups and it has encouraged her make friends of all ages. In addition to their daily activities she's regularly exposed to a variety of experiences including a visit from animals from Coyote Point, science experiments, gymnastics, yoga, dance, etc. From time to time she'll receive a sad face (posted on a chart) because she was socializing during nap time instead of sleeping or resting quietly. When that happens she tends to mention it later that day and we talk about why that happened, how she feels about it, and what she'll do different next time. I think it's okay to have rules and expectations of little ones as long as they're reasonable and age-appropriate. Stepping Stone doesn't plan formal reviews but I recently asked Teresa if we could have a check-in about our daughter and she was happy to schedule a private meeting with me. She spent nearly an hour chatting with me about our daughter's personality, progress, and advice for the future, all while happily helping me entertain our toddler. read more

My son goes to this place for a little over a year now. The teachers are very nice. It's in a home with a huge play ground. I really like the student to teacher ratio. One art a day! I feel that my son is completely prepared both academically and socially to start Kindergarten next fall. The teachers, and especially the director Teresa, are nurturing and trustworthy. My 2 year old daughter will start this program in the fall. First and foremost, I would like to say that I am so happy and impressed with Stepping Stone. Like most parents, I did a lot of research and tours of different preschools throughout the Bay Area. Of all the options, Stepping Stone was my first choice and it was just a matter of waiting for an opening (definitely a good sign if the school is full!). My oldest child has been there almost a year and my youngest will start in the Winter. Teresa is wonderful and she hand picks her staff so well. Teresa cares so much about the children and she creates a loving environment that makes learning fun. I was shocked to read the negative reviews about her (of course I saw these reviews prior to touring the school however two friends of mine had mentioned the school to me so I decided to follow through with the tour....and I am so glad I did). In my opinion these negative reviews are furthest from the truth. My child is a very picky eater and Teresa has diligently worked with me, giving me different options, so that my child will eat and have enough energy at school. All the rules of the school are clearly outlined in the concise student handbook. Teresa along with the rest of the staff sticks to those guidelines which are typical for most schools. Here are some reasons why I chose Stepping Stone and why I am so happy sending my child there: -Open year round with enrollment anytime....you do not have to wait until August or Sept to enroll. You just have to see if there is an opening and if not, then put your name on the waiting list! Also only closed on usual holidays, one week in mid year, and two weeks for Xmas (many schools I toured were closed for at least a month during the summer). - Sick policy - though it sounds strict (symptom/fever free for 24 hours) it works! My child has been sick only once and he has been there almost a year! Also the school is very clean and the staff teaches the children to wash their hands regularly. -Communication - if I ever need to check up on my child or have a question for the teachers I just call and they ALWAYS answer. I never get a recording during school hours. Also when I pick up my child, he is allowed to run to me....not sure why other yelper said otherwise. -Entertainment comes to the school instead of field trips - imagine packing up 30+ small children in car seats or having them walk along busy streets? Not a good idea and I have heard too many horror stories about toddler field trips. One of the activities they do is gymnastics. They have a special instructor come to the school and set up mats, etc... Recently they had a Bay Area dentist visit and teach the children. Fun! -All food is provided! So you do not need to pack a lunch. And like I said earlier, Teresa is more than willing to work with you if your child has any allergies or food dislikes! -Preparation for kindergarten - so far so good! My child is learning something new everyday and always comes home with a new art project. I am amazed at how much my child has already learned since entering Stepping Stone. -Teaching staff - excellent student to teacher ratio. The staff is nurturing and responsive to the students' needs. I really like ALL the teachers there and so does my son! Overall I am very happy with Stepping Stone. And last but not least, I have no special interest in Stepping Stone nor was I given a special gift card to Starbucks to write this review. I am just a regular mom writing a positive review about a school that I am so pleased with. Plus, 30+ other parents wake up every morning to drop off their children at Stepping Stone....so I know I am not alone in my thinking! read more

This is long overdue. I highly recommend Stepping Stone. My son went to this Pre School from age 3-5 and had a great experience. Teresa, the owner, was great with my son. She is firm, but caring with the kids and knows that they need to be prepared for Kindergarten not just academically, but socially. As he attended, he grew in many ways, along with his classmates. he was more than ready for Kindergarten when he graduated and is doing very well. It was a great experience for us because we were looking for something that would challenge him,, not coddle him, but care for him too. Stepping Stone is that place. My child has been attending Stepping Stone Preschool for a year now and I couldn't be happier. My child came from a home daycare that had no structure and was basically free play all day. It took about a month for my child to transition. Every teacher was very helpful and informative in the transition process. About 7 months into the preschool, my child had to have ear surgery. We kept Teresa in the loop about all the doctor appointments and she was more than happy to accommodate my child leaving early or coming in late. Teresa has also been able to accommodate my child's special needs when it comes to hearing restrictions. She has also gone above and beyond by giving me numerous references for therapy in different areas to help my child. In the year that my child has been here, we have only seen one teacher go, and one new teacher come in. I thinks it's important to have familiar faces for a steady amount of time. Just like in regular school, you get a new teacher every year. So I think having one teacher leave and one teacher come in, is pretty good for one years' time. The preschool itself is always clean and never smells. This preschool is for children who are independent; potty trained, putting on their own shoes and jacket, etc. They also have nap time here, and they limit the nap for no longer than 2 hours. YAY! The preschool also provides all the snacks and lunch. My child is also highly allergic to peanuts and Teresa was, again, more than willing to accommodate. However, this preschool is not peanut free. With the two conditions that my child has, (peanut allergy and hearing restrictions) Teresa never made my child or my family feel like a burden to her or the preschool. I have another child who will be starting here at the end of this year, and we are so excited to have a preschool that we love and trust. read more

Stepping Stones has been instrumental is my son's rounded development. Our son has been in Stepping Stones since the last three years and now he starts kindergarten at Lincoln. He couldn't be more ready! Theresa has a great program for the pre-schoolers a year before they start kindergarten to prepare them for the 'real' world. We, as first time parents, really appreciate her experience and wisdom in our son's development- both social and academic.The school itself has a large play area where they kids get to play three times a day. I think that's wonderful. Theresa has a wonderful staff. They do a lot of activities during the day with several visits from outside organizations (eg: Curio Odyssey) planned during the year. They also have a gymnastics class every Friday morning which my son enjoys very much. One of the teachers does yoga with them as well! I have had my daughter at Stepping Stone for 2 1/2 years now and couldn't be happier. They run a terrific program in which all the kids interact with each other and are also broken into age groups to focus on individual developmental skills. The staff are always very upbeat and encouraging the kids. The director runs a well organized and structured program. Expectations and goals for the kids and parents are all explained clearly upfront and they hold themselves as well as the parents and kids accountable which is all anyone can ask. The school is always very clean and tidy and the children are expected to participate in keeping it that way which is great. This attitude has carried over to our home where our daughter never fights having to help clean up her room and actually takes great pride in doing so. Since both my wife and I work we were initially concerned that our daughter wouldn't have the necessary attention paid to her to learn basic manners and social interaction skills. Those fears proved to be nothing but a waste of time as the school has done a magnificent job of helping our daughter to develop into a well adjusted and well mannered 4 1/2 year old. They have very creative projects and activities for the kids as well as a terrific play yard in which they are able to spend a lot of time outside.
