HIP HOP CLASSES I…read morelive in the East Bay, but work in San Francisco. ODC is one of two dance facilities in San Francisco I've been to that are walking distance to the Bart stations. After work I would go to ODC on certain days. I've been taking hip hop classes since 2007 at ODC. Almost 100% of the hip hop classes I enrolled are taught my Micaya. What I love about ODC is the studios aren't dark inside. Also the studios are spacious enough where you don't feel cramped. Even though I've taken hip hop classes for almost 20 years at ODC it doesn't feel dated. The one complaint I would make is regards to Studio B, which is where I take hip hop classes. Most of the studios downstairs have wooden floors however upstairs inside Studio B the Marley floor has too much grip or can be sticky. I'm surprised that throughout the years I haven't twisted my ankle or knee. Despite the Marley floor I enjoy taking hip hop classes at ODC.

ODC lacks professionalism and kindness in their management of children's classes…read more I asked to register for a certain mother and toddler class repeatedly and assumed I had a spot and only later found out that the school hasn't properly processed my registration and the spot was taken. I was told first that a spot would be offered as an exception but then (and after telling my daughter who was so happy) this offer was rescinded by a different staff member. What is more I was made to feel it was my fault when I was doing nothing wrong. Heartbreaking.

So many teachers to choose from, recently I've been taking Jepoy's Beg Hip Hop on Friday nights and they've been so fun! I plan to take others! Each class is $25 unless there's a special guest, and you can book the class online or do a drop in when you're there (They accept Venmo on site!) I typically book day of, but best to book in advance when it comes to special guests. I wish there were class packs of some sort because I would love to come more consistently. Parking is pretty easy on Fri nights, but I can't speak for the other days, as it is located in the city. They also have spring performance workshops, which I plan to do in the future! I took Eddie Mina's class on 6/24/26, and I absolutely loved it. The vibes were great, the choreography was taught thoroughly, and Eddie is an excellent instructor. I'm only taking off one star because I wish students were more aware of dance class etiquette. I understand that dance classes are supposed to be fun, but constantly joking, talking, and being unfocused with your group of friends while the instructor is teaching is disrespectful (not only to the teacher, but also to everyone else who paid to be there and is trying to learn the choreography) It was distracting enough that it made me hesitate to come back to this instructor's class if his crowd of students continues to be like this. (I didn't experience this in Austin's class, so I think the crowd varies by the teacher) In LA, most dance studios and instructors emphasize class etiquette and remind students to stay quiet and focused while the teacher is demonstrating or explaining choreography. I think that really helps create a respectful learning environment for everyone. I hope City Dance Studio can consider reminding students about class etiquette at the beginning of class or by posting a simple reminder on Instagram. I genuinely enjoyed the instructor and would love to keep coming back but the student environment is the only thing keeping me from coming back.

Since moving away for college and doing adult things, I forgot about my love for dance. Thank the dance angels I found Alonzo King LINES. I was twiddling my thumbs on class pass and found this spot and signed up for the Contemporary Fusion class with Jenelle. Love love loved it! Jenelle was the sweetest and grooviest instructor and she made all people of all experience feel welcomed. It was such a nice class to ease into dance. Will be coming back more regularly for the intermediate contemporary class and to keep up contemporary fusion with Jenelle!

They give wonderful instruction, keep an eye on our form and yet still make class fun. Magnolia is the administrative manager and manages registrations, organization and helps keep us organized with our classes a makeups. She taught us how to transition from one step to another and provided us with tips on how to be more aligned with each other. After every session, she would email us notes so we could review each lesson and practice at home. I highly recommend taking dance lessons with Genevieve, whether it's for your wedding or just for fun! On her first day, she reported to me that the jazz teacher (Isabela) did not allow the students to take bathroom breaks. She was also unnecessarily mean and said to one of the students she didn't care that they were tired. I wrote an e-mail addressing my concerns, and for some odd reason this same teacher was extra rude to my daughter the next day. She made my daughter do extra warm up reps although my daughter said her back was hurting from practice the day prior. At some point during class, she grabbed my daughter's arm very harshly. All the students in that class agreed that this teacher was unfair and unkind. My daughter refused to go back to dance camp and we had 2 days left of paid camp. Management refused to reimburse me and made excuses for this type of abusive/unprofessional behavior for this particular teacher. All other staff members were very nice. I can make a bigger deal about this matter by filing a complaint with the BBB or even take them to civil court. But I've decided to write my first review on Yelp just to forewarn other parents.

Adult membership is $91 and Senior is $81 so not much of a discount even though his is paid for by Kaiser. They have free resistance band workout every other Wednesday at the Union Square plaza at 8am. It's a free class and the instructor is nice.

Where do we even begin? Let's start at the top: Erin is simply amazing. We truly could not imagine a more perfect person to prepare us for our first dance. Not only is Erin an incredible dance instructor, but she is also a wonderful soul who brings a sense of calm to the often stressful wedding planning process. Our weekly dance lessons quickly became our favorite part of planning the wedding. Spending one to two hours each week dancing together brought my wife and me even closer. Erin created the most perfect, beautifully choreographed first dance for us, and it was an absolute showstopper at our wedding. The kids feel proud of their accomplishment. For me, however, this is overshadowed by the very strict policies. You pay for the entire year up front, so you want to make sure your kid will want to do the entire year. The first year we went here, this worked out OK. However, the second year my 7 yr old was not enjoying the class at all--to the point she would leave the class early crying. We were a couple months in at this point (but before winter break or the beginning of performance dance practices). We were told that we could leave the class but would not be entitled to any refund of the tuition (more than half the year at that point). We were also not allowed to try out another class to see if we could find one my child would like better. I felt this was extraordinarily rigid for a 7 year old. To not even work with a family to try and find a better fit in dance class says to me they are not concerned with the dancer's experience. Our only options were to eat the half year tuition, or force our child to continue a class she really did not like. Perhaps this policy is OK for older kids who know what activities they like, but for younger children I find it inappropriate. Parents should also be aware that the kids are required to wear specific clothing to all practices, so there is an additional cost as you need to order specific dance leotards, tights, shoes, etc.

This year (2011) the theme was "Around the World." The 90 minute show had 33 numbers running 3 minutes or less. The teachers always do a great job of teaching, creating the choreography, selecting the beautiful costumes, & letting the kids shine. Each year the best performances vary. 3 years ago, 3 young men tap dancers were just phenomenal. This year the ballet & modern/contemporary numbers were my favorites. A tall angular young man was especially wonderful to watch...smooth, graceful, strong, rhythmic...better than many professionals I have seen! I am often surprised by the abilities of children who do not have traditional willowy dancer shapes. This year the bigger girls really excelled in the modern & ballet numbers. Their technique, movement, & energy were a pleasure to watch. The younger children are a treat. They often miss something & their reactions are so cute & funny. This year when another dancer stood on her spot on the stage 1 little girl gently pushed the other toward her proper spot, pointed, & mouthed..."you go there!" The price was reasonable...Less than $30 for middle range seats. Much less than what we last paid for a seat at the opera.

Margaret Jenkins Dance Company is definitely the most interesting, most evocative modern dance that I've seen in San Francisco. I highly recommend these performances. They are amazing. The dancers are mind blowing and the choreography gives a great deal of thought to space, performance and how to view the dancers. Besides the beauty and grace, it's also very thought provoking and will have you thinking about the performance for days after.
