My husband and I were visiting family in northeastern Pennsylvania over Thanksgiving, and were looking to eat something different after a few days of homemade turkey and sides. The "locals" suggested ordering take-out from this restaurant -- their favorite hoagie shop. Steve and Irene's is a mom and pop shop that has been in business for more than 40 years, and has been voted "best hoagie" in the valley for 10+ years. Nonetheless, I hesitated because they're located a few towns over, and would require someone to drive to go to pick them up. We reviewed their menu on-line, and called in an order for four 12" hoagies for four adults. The restaurant offers both 12" and 24" hoagies; they don't sell our usual smaller 6" ones. My husband ordered the Cheesesteak Special ($11.50), which includes green peppers, fried onions, mushrooms, and marinara sauce, while I chose an Eggplant Parmesan ($10.75). Others ordered a Corned Beef Reuben ($12.00), with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing, and a regular cheesesteak ($10.95). In retrospect, my husband and I should've ordered only one hoagie as the quantities were large and we ending up splitting one for dinner and ate the other one the next day. Of the two, we enjoyed the Cheesesteak Special more than the Eggplant Parmesan, largely because we prefer a hoagie with A-LOT of fillings and toppings and the cheesesteak had more. That said, while the taste was good, we still would've preferred more fillings and toppings on both. Our friends enjoyed both of their hoagies. We easily called in our order, and the girl who took our order apologized that it would take 55 minutes. However, it was actually ready in only about 35 minutes. Parking was easy. Disappointed Yet Again Tried giving Steve and Irene's another shot, hoping things had improved since our last visit -- unfortunately, it's only gotten worse. The sub we ordered was all bread with barely any meat. What little meat there was could only be described as pathetic. It's incredibly disappointing to pay for a hoagie and end up with a glorified loaf of bread. You'd expect a decent meat-to-bread ratio, especially from a place with a reputation for subs, but this was unacceptable. Steve & Irene's brings back the nostalgia of your childhood. This was our Friday night dinner before family camping trips. Somehow, the food tastes just like I remember it from 30 years ago. Nothing has changed. Well, except the owners, but the new owners haven't changed a thing. The place, the food, the service is all top notch. So disappointed. Two stars...one because the bread is good and one because I did recieve the correct food in a timely manner. Thats the only good things about my experience. The guy at the front counter was pretty much a jerk. Having never been there before I had questions about the menu. The guy at the front counter seemed big seemed very annoyed that I was asking questions and really only gave 1 or 2 word answers. I felt like I was annoying him by coming in to order. All that aside this is a restaurant and I felt I should reserve judgment until I got the food. I love a good cheesesteak and sadly this was not one. The bread is soft and pillowy and pretty delightful. The problem comes that there is so little meat to bread ratio. The steak was bland and again there wasn't much of it. The hot peppers are just banana peppers. How can you call yourself a hoagie shop and not have hoagie hot pepper relish? My husband was so excited that I was stopping at this place that I had even brought an insulated carrier to bring him a 24" sub home which is 4 hours away. This is a sad day, I started getting cheesesteaks from here over 40 years ago, they were the best. Coming home to the area for thanksgiving, I figured I would get one for nostalgic memories, what a disappointment. The roll was not even half filled with meat, and the price was outrageous. Ok have been giving them the benefit of the doubt. But this is the last straw. I have been hearing a lot around town that this place is going downhill. The last few times it was not that great. I grew up eating Steve and Irene's hoagies and they have never let me down. I have yet to find another hoagie shop that beats this place. I have tried many of their hoagies throughout the years and I have always been impressed. My family's favorite has been the Steak and Cheese Special. Two of my favorites are the Italian and the California Steak and Cheese. The menu features a very wide selection of hoagies, so you are bound to find something to fulfill your cravings. The wings are also very good, my favorite is the honey mustard! I have never once in all the years I have been ordering from here eaten at the shop, it is definitely more of a place to get take out. The building is very small with not much space to eat inside. They now have online ordering, which helps to make the whole take out process a breeze. The prices are great especially for the amount of food you get. A large hoagie is 2 feet long and priced between $10 - $15. I'm always sure to make a stop here when I come to NEPA. After Grace's Hoagies closed, I thought I'd never find a good steak and cheese hoagie again. Then I discovered this place (and I have no idea how I missed it before). The hoagies are HUGE (just like Grace's were) - a large is two feet long. The prices are really decent and the food itself is high quality and delicious. I love the California steak and cheese! I've had a few variations of the turkey hoagies as well, and I've always been impressed. Even though the main draw is the hoagies, the appetizers are good, too, but not nearly as amazing as the hoagies. I love that you can order online - it makes life so much easier. You definitely can't stop by and eat in, since the inside is so small, and there's not a lot of waiting room if you don't order ahead. However, this is probably the best hoagie shop in NEPA. I ordered takeout from here this evening. I Got a steak & cheese and an order of cheddar bacon ranch fries. The steak and cheese was pretty good. The bun was very fresh and it tasted like a bun from National Bakery. The fries were very soggy. This may have been because they were in a Styrofoam box and there was condensation. It ruined the fries, I think if I ate them their or if I lived closer, they would have been fine. Also, the ranch seasoning was a bit overpowering. Next time, I'll only get ranch dressing on the side. Overall, I'd say the food was pretty good and prices were fair. I'll come back eventually, but being in Mayfield, it is kind of far for hoagies. read more

This was a pleasant surprise! We happened to be in the area and wanted lunch from a local place and not a fast food chain. We ordered a cheesesteak and some Cajun fries.
