We just moved into our first house and wanted a closet in one room split into two so the adjoining room would have space as well. Steve came out to take a look, and suggested pocket doors ("just an idea!"), and we were very happy with the end result. Along with that work, we threw some things on his plate that we didn't anticipate (like having him patch holes in walls made by electricians running wires, and solving a tricky problem with mounting ceiling fans on tongue-and-groove), and Steve made sure to get everything done on time, even with a tight schedule due to painting. I was around most of the time doing smaller house projects, and I watched him bust his butt those days, and he even came by on July 4 and the weekends to do the more quiet work to ensure it would all be done on time. Along with this, his rate is extremely competitive, he was full of great tips for things I was working on, and would let me borrow a power tool or two that I didn't have when needed. This was absolutely the worst yelp experience I've ever had! I thought I try him because his of his reviews. Steve was rude and very difficult to work with. I'm having my exterior house painted so I needed him to do some simple carpentry. His work was very sloppy and definitely was not comfortable doing the work. He never finished the job after he cut a hole in my French door to remove the dry rot.... said he would return the next day to finish the job, so the upon his returnee told me he wasn't going to finish the job because I questioned his work! I hired Steve to repair my shed. It took him 21/2 days to rebuild the doors and put a gutter on it. The doors are better built than when they were new. He reinforced the frame, added a third hinge and used better screws and nails. This was all suggested by Steve. He came out the next morning, provided advice, and knock out the small job. He made suggestions on the big job which will require more planning. His rate is fair and he did a good job. It was a horrible experience. Steve quoted me on a job and we agreed painting the downstairs, fixing a patch of the hardwood flooring, and helping move the furniture for painting. He kept insisting on bringing in a helper. His helper did almost 80 percent of the work and Steve would almost always not be working. He was dishonest about the amount of hours he and his assistant worked by several hours, and didn't complete most of the work I hired and agreed to pay him to do, his work was sloppy, and he was difficult and rude to work with. Steve just finished a small but rather important project for us. We had water damage under our kitchen sink, In the process of addressing our water damage, the remediation company had to remove all the Melamine boards and studs. I contacted several other handyman companies but only Steve not only came to bid the work, but he was ready to install new our boards under our sink. Steve repaired our fence, which had some loose boards and large gaps between boards which meant we had little privacy from a neighbor. He dealt, with good humor, the silly hostility from that neighbor, who called both her husband (who asked how big a guy Steve was) and the police (to whom we showed the survey that showed the fence was entirely on our property and the letter neighbor had received before they purchased their house informing them that all the fences they saw to the west were on our property, and thus belonged to us. When she asked Steve what we were paying him, he smartly replied "Enough". He had to go to several different stores to get the lumber needed for the repairs and finished the project quickly (by noon the 2nd day).
