I elected to have reconstructive surgery on my Achilles tendon. I had 30% left based on years of wear and tear. I wish Dr Neufeld would have described the possible repercussions beyond " limited big toe flexibility due to borrowing the tendon to strengthen the Achilles". I have numbness in my foot and atrophy in my calf despite one year of focused PT following surgery. I regret the surgery and would never had done it based on my post operative experience. Alternatively, I would have taken my chances with the 30% of tendon left and managed the occasional flare-ups in lieu of surgery. read more

Had hallux rigidis in right foot in 2009. He fixed it with a titanium joint that he had designed. I took no pain medications post surgery and was as happy as possible with the results. Fast forward to 2023 - left foot developed the same malady. He's refined the correction joint - I am post surgery almost a month now and again - no post surgery pain medications and I couldn't be happier with the results. read more

I was Dr. Neufeld for a possible minimally invasive bunion surgery. He was very brief and said he thinks I have read about it already. It was a short 10 min discussion. Surgery was scheduled June 18. After reading all the comments in yelp - thank God I was able to cancel my surgery. Today I checked my claims with insurance and he charged them $900 for office visit and xray. I requested the medical records office of Dr. Neufeld for my xray and provided me with one. I made an appointment with another surgeon and was given so much time and attention. He spoke to me showed me pictures and may be spent almost 30 to 40 minutes with me. When they were accessing the disc of Dr. Neufeld it was corrupted and everything that they did would not open it. I had no choice but to have my left foot x-rayed again. The following day I decided to have both my feet done. My current surgeon told me to get my x-ray from Dr. Neufeld. I called and ask Medical records if I could pick it up a new CD since the file that they sent me was corrupted and did not work at all. The medical records person said that it will not be available until next week. Honestly I knew it would happen since I was moving to another surgeon. Because of former reviews and a friend that had surgery with Dr. Neufeld I highly recommend everybody not to go to this medical practice. NO NO NO!!! read more

I knew something was odd sitting in the waiting room watching patient after patient ask the receptionist how long will it be before i see the doctor? After i sat an hour in the waiting room and another 45 minutes in the exam room i decided that i had enough. The nurse stuck his head inside the door and was shocked the doctor had not seen me. I told the nurse to forget it, my time was valuable too and left. It has been a week and i have heard nothing from Dr Neufeld. Either he's too proud to apologize or his staff is too afraid to tell him a patient walked out after an hour forty-five minutes. I was brief and concise but he was aloof, arrogant, and talked over me. His practice seems to be focused more on revenue generation, not quality health care. I had bunion surgery scheduled with my podiatrist and was ready to go "under the knife". At the last minute something told me to do a Google search about the procedure and how it was done. It was a stumbled upon a less invasive procedure. Less pain, less swelling, faster recovery, a no brainer! But wait, my podiatrist didn't do it that way. I canceled the night before surgery, after finally finding Dr. Neufeld. It was difficult because the procedure is so new, but I'm glad I did. He and his office staff are professional, and they have everything under their roof. I can get (and am getting) PT there and they also have a podiatrist on staff. What more can you ask for? On Feb 7th 2017, Dr. Steven Neufeld operated on my right foot bunion and hammertoe. Result was a crooked foot. He and his team repeatedly said it was just a soft tissue problem which would improve by wrapping. Nothing improved. Nothing changed. I had 2 second opinions diagnosing the need for corrective bone surgery. One year later on Feb 7th 2018, I sent a letter of complaint to Dr. Neufeld and his team and never received a reply. After 1 1/2 years of daily wrapping my foot, a podiatrist, Dr. Seth Rubenstein, corrected my crooked foot by operating on the bone on July 20th 2018. read more

Dr. Neufeld, did the surgery to fix my seriously broken lower leg... I fell and broke BOTH bones; badly splintering the tibia. A badly broken bone must be carefully fixed in position and supported until it's strong enough to bear weight. Dr. Neufeld used a process called internal fixation, using 2 plates and close to 30 screws inside my leg, to support the bone directly; all of which will be left in place now that the bone has healed. It has been a slow recovery with months of PT but his work ... is a work of art! I found both Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Borden VERY responsive, concerned and helpful when called off hours. His team seems to have various levels of skill. I was not pleased when my foot was first rewrapped after surgery it was way to tight and she dismissed my concern; which resulted in a pressure sore on the top of my foot, that took months to heal. It's now been 8 months, and my leg is completely healed!!!! I'm back to full function, even attending my Latin Mix dance class at the Gym.... I am happy that my scars barely noticable...even now. Note: DO remember to take a pain pill before you come in to have your staples removed... I was so glad I did. In addition, Dr. Borden was kind and very gentle when removing the staples. Do NOT let this so called "top" surgeon get anywhere near your feet. I went in for a routine bunion surgery and he SCREWED up my foot so bad that I have to go to another surgeon to have major repair on the mess that Nuefeld made. After reading all the bad reviews I still took the time to go see Dr. Neufeld and see how true they were. After having two surgeries on my Achilles that was messed up completely I need a second opinion. After going to see Dr. Klein who told me to see Dr. Neufeld I did. I had my first appt around 8 a.m. I waited maybe 20 mins to be taken back. When upon meeting Dr. Neufeld he DID spend the time with me and talk about whats going on with my Achilles and heel. I stressed to him on how I really didn't want to go into a third surgery within less then a year of my other two and he completely understood and we found different options to do. Those options did not end up working and I will have to get another surgery which I trust Dr. Neufeld doing. He listened to what I wanted and my Achilles was able to get a little stronger for a third surgery. I have NEVER had to wait in the lobby for over 30 mins the four times i have been there. I have some complications with the staff who handles the prescriptions which he took care of immediately. For a doctor to take care of that himself because his staff made a mistake shows how much he does care for you. Once getting the surgery then I will decided whether he deserves the fifth star! Please take the time to go see Dr. Neufeld and not completely listen to every bad review. A Year later, I am now updating my review. Dr. Neufeld earned the 5th star! I ended up having a third Achilles surgery. He called me a couple days before the surgery and told me he had talked to a couple different doctors at conferences about my situation and thought the best action would be to do a tendon transfer. He took the tendon off my big toe and transplanted it onto my Achilles to help my Achilles gain the strength and ability back. Now a year later my foot is still gaining strength. As we all should know going through 3 different reconstructive Achilles Surgeries it could take 3 year to heal. Now I don't think my foot will ever be back to normal but it is way better now that Dr. Neufeld did what he did. I'm very happy with the outcome. read more

Described my ailment in detail on his forms. Was asked by 4 people why I was there. After five x-rays and two examinations by two people, no diagnosis. Not even a guess. I was asked: Did I want surgery, a shot, or ointment? No clue was offered about the content or purpose of any. Assumed surgery was to develop a diagnosis. I chose ointment. Days later, I was called by a pharmacy in the Southwest (I'm in D.C.). The ointment is not covered by BC/BS insurance, cost $100. Dr. Neufeld performed ankle replacement surgery on my deformed and very painful ankle in 2014. Two years later, my new ankle is outperforming all my expectations! I am playing golf and walking 10 miles a week without pain. After reading some of the Yelp reviews it appears that when Neufeld is good he does no harm, but when he operates on the wild side he's a disaster. He did surgery on both feet that caused me great pain. I had to get semi-corrective surgery on both feet by a reputable foot and ankle surgeon in Baltimore (once foot surgery is botched, scar tissue and nerve damage is irreversible). The doctor in Baltimore had to remove the bad hardware in the left foot, and straighten out the overlapping toes on the right foot, thanks to Neufeld's horrible handiwork. I would have never gone to Neufeld had I known I'd be playing Russian roulette with the guy to the detriment of my feet. read more

The first doctor we went to regarding my daughters ankle (well known in Reston) did not have a clue what to do. He wanted to operate but didn't know really have a plan. Dr. Neufeld knew exactly what to do and the bone graph surgery went very well. My daughter is able to swim again and not have pain in her ankle. I waited two hours today to see Dr Neufeld. The visit was perfunctory as he seemed in a hurry and was running very late. X-rays were taken first and I asked him to compare with my X-rays from 2011. I was advised to have bunions tomes and handed a piece of paper describing the Bunion Boot Protocol. So much for patent education. Very disappointing. Dr. Neufeld removed a large, painful bunion, hammertoe, and bone spur from my left foot in April 2011. My experience encompassed 3 months. The surgery was performed at the Woodburn Surgical Center near Fairfax Inova Hospital. Dr. Neufeld implanted a titanium plate in the large toe to prevent this toe from ever moving out of place again and forming a bunion. All post-operative office visits included x-rays done in the office to ensure the foot was healing correctly. Services provided included supplying me with 3 different post-operative shoes for each new stage of healing. The shoes, including and especially a pneumonic boot, were a vast improvement over the single shoe I was given 27 years before and greatly lessened the pain and improved my ability to walk during the healing period. I sought out Dr. Steven Neufeld after reading that he has invented various plates to reduce the recovery time and improve the outcome of bunion surgery. For almost 30 years I have suffered from a painful bunion that was operated on 27 years ago by an incompetent podiatrist. His mistakes resulted in many more problems as the foot tried to adapt. I dreaded surgery again but the pain was interfering with my life. I was very fortunate to have located Dr. Neufeld who successfully removed what was now a very large bunion, a hammer toe and bone spur. He clearly explained what his suggested surgical approach would be, what amount of pain I would experience, what outcomes I could expect. He prescribed adequate painkillers to manage the immediate post-operative pain. Throughout this 3-month experience I was fully aware that this time I was in excellent medical hands. The surgical center Dr. Neufeld recommended (Woodburn) was totally satisfactory, his post-operative follow-up and that of his staff were very professional and relevant to my needs at each visit. Besides being medically competent, I found both Dr. Neufeld & his staff to be compassionate & personable. I also appreciated the shoe & shoe accessory store that is located within Dr. Neufeld's new office in Merrifield. (Although I did not need physical therapy, that is also available at the office.) I was able to purchase there appropriate shoes that would help me avoid developing future foot problems. After 3 months, I consider myself fully recovered from the surgery, pain free, and leading a normal & active life. Foot surgery is painful and disruptive, yet this time around I felt all aspects were handled very well and the entire experience was less onerous than I expected it to be. I'm glad I did it and that I found Dr. Neufeld, whom I highly recommend and would return to should I experience future foot or ankle problems. read more

I choose Dr. Neufeld for my foot surgery in November 2016 after meeting with numerous other foot specialist. I have a foot that is very complicated due to a spinal cord injury and some paralysis and nerves that never regenerated. He preformed a very complicated intense surgery that included correcting a bunion, hammer toes, collapsing arch, ankle instability and foot always rotated out to the side. This was the 8th procedure I have had done on this foot and feel pretty certain it will be the last. The recovery took much longer than I had hoped but I am finally walking better than ever. There can be a wait to see him but I did feel that he answered my questions and took time with me. I am very satisfied with my outcome and I had a seriously messed foot. read more

I totally agree with the bad reviews. As they say if I could give it zero stars or negative stars I would. I went for toe surgery. Well the big toe was fused, and that went well, but i ended up with a really crooked 4th toe that now crosses under my third toe. (my toes were supposed to have pins put in them and be straight. ) I ended up having another surgery with him to fix that toe. He said they would fix it and it would be straight. Well second surgery, and the toe is still just as crooked. and the skin on the top of the foot is permanently numb (and its been about 2 years now and the skin looks scaly ever since. Also there are super long waits, and he does breeze in and out without much explanation. I paid for the two surgeries and things are just as bad. I have a hard time getting any shoes - can only wear wide running shoes or clogs, due to the toe crossing over. I'm afraid to have anyone do surgery to correct this because there is probably a lot of scar tissue and nerve damage from what Dr. Neufeld and/or his assistant did. I went to my podiatrist recently - he said it could be fixed surgically, but given scar tissue and numbness, there still may be problems. I wish I had never gone to this practice. Dr Neufeld did my bunion surgery in September of 2013, and I am very happy with the results. I am a runner, so I was extremely nervous about my foot post surgery. Well, after two months I was already running a 5K. I no longer have pain, numbness and callouses either. I am so pleased! Dr Neufeld was an excellent communicator and super friendly, so I am not sure about some of these reviews I am reading. The only reason I gave four stars is because I am unhappy with the billing department at the office. They never return my calls and it is extremely frustrating. I am a 54 year old fit man with osteoarthritis in both ankles. I decided to have ankle replacement surgery on one of my ankles last year, and I can honestly say the results are life changing. I don't even know I have a fake joint! No more embarrassing and painful limping! This procedure is not done by many doctors. It's a difficult procedure and the joint technology is still maturing. I needed a fairly complex foot repair and was referred to Dr. Neufeld by a colleague. Prior to surgery, I was given a folder with all the information I needed, including a timeline about when I'd be back in a shoe and able to resume normal activities. I had appointments at both the Arlington and Falls Church offices and everyone from Dr. Neufeld to the PAs to the physical therapists to the x-ray technicians to the receptionists were exceptional. Physical therapy was very efficient - there is no wait. Mobility was limited the first two weeks after the operation (as the pharmacist said, "Gravity is not your friend with foot surgery.") But it felt like the whole team works together to get people moving as soon as possible. Getting the other foot fixed by Dr. Neufeld soon. read more

I wouldn't reccommend Dr. Neufeld at all. He did a nerve release surgery on me that was not only a failure, but stiched back together horribly. I've had four other unrelated surgeries and this is the worst scar I have...for the simplest surgery. Ridiculous. Also, you have to wait for him forever. I first saw the PA, Josie Hyams, several weeks ago. She was fantastic. A sports orthopedist who specializes in ankles AND takes my insurance? Too good to be true. I went for a follow-up with Dr. Neufeld (who Josie had consulted during my initial visit). Despite being one of the first appointments of the day, I waited for over an hour. I'm willing to wait if that means a doc actually spends time with me. He didn't listen, told me I could begin running (despite no reduction in symptoms, and the fact that his new brace he wants me in post-boot won't FIT IN A SHOE) and told me to come back in another month when we will "discuss exploratory surgery." When you haven't even listened to me you think I'm going to let you cut me open? Oh, and pay them $400 for new orthotics, too, since "that might be the issue" - despite wearing brand-new custom orthotics which have never given me issue. Dr. Neufeld was arrogant, breezed in and out, and I will not be going back. Sorely disappointed - and I'm no closer to having a diagnosis or treatment plan. I posted a review here several months ago and it has mysteriously disappeared. Dr. Neufeld performed surgery in 2014 (2.5 years ago) on my moderate bunion and turf toe that I sustained from a fall. I am a healthy 38 year old female, active and petite. Despite assurances that surgery would have a good outcome and improve my pain, the surgery was a horrible failure and I'm left with a very screwed up foot, constant pain, and inability to wear all but the most orthopedic of shoes. My foot is far worse now than before the procedure. Recovery from the surgery was horrific and follow-up care from his callous PA was poor. I wish I had never gone to this practice, and certainly wish I had never had the surgery. If you are considering foot surgery, I urge you to go elsewhere to avoid the complications that I have had. I am now seeking the opinion of another doctor to find a solution to the pain Dr. Neufeld caused - I see no point going back to him because I would be afraid to let him do anything else to my foot. read more

After reading all the negative reviews, I am posting something positive about Dr. Neufeld. Three years ago, my 13 year old son needed to have an extra bone in the arch of his foot removed and tendon - apparently a pretty common problem these days - the tendon was rubbing on the bone and my son would limp off of soccer fields and basketball courts. Dr. Neufeld took a lot of time each visit consulting with us and his post-op bedside manner was awesome! My son had an easy recovery (less than 3 months - they predicted 4 - 9) and he hasn't had an issue with his foot in the past 3 years. He plays multiple sports for his high school and is constantly running. I am getting ready to see Dr. Neufeld myself for a chronic Achilles and ankle problem and thought of no other doctor to see based on my son's personal experience and a physical therapy friend of mine, who referred us to him originally, who see and works with Dr. Neufeld's patients. Unfortunately people like to only post negative reviews and sometimes the "full story" isn't in the details - such as person's medical health, willingness to perform proper rehab, etc... Some doctor's do screw up, but sometimes our bodies just don't respond to the treatment or we don't do what we are supposed to in recovery. read more
