It's been many years since I have shot with Steven. When I did shoot with him it was for his book called Rassle and I shot with my ex at the time. We were on set at a ranch and Steven really wanted to portray the meaning of the title of the book so he had us wrestling around in grass. I got up as I started to itch all over and as I though that it was a normal reaction, however we discovered that I was highly allergic to that particular type of grass. I met fellow San Franciscan Steven Underhill at a 24 hour fitness between 2009-2011. Very human, humorous, easy-going, analytical, modest, honest. Come to find out later, I've seen his phenomenal photography work for decades. Fast forward to this week, when Steven did headshots for me. The first since the early 2000s. I'm 40 now and real professional cameras don't let any of that time in my life hide these days. Steven gave me rates and availability and he was promptly agreeable to a meeting time and place almost immediately after my initial inquiry with him. We met only a few days later and I had followed his simple and practical advice on what to bring for the photo shoot. As soon as he said hello, his playful way of being was preparing me to be in from my of his lens. Steven Underhill is a very good photographer who specializes in the male body and has produced books and creates yearly calendars that also are usually homoerotic. He can also be found all over San Francisco at just about every event where people want to be seen and want proof they were there, hopefully in some form of media. He has a very professional website where he posts digital versions of the hundreds of events he attends monthly. He looks and acts like classic 'Paparazzi' who celebrities love to hate and he can be just as vexing. Unless you've retained his services you almost surely won't see his work because he seems to publish only a few photo's of every event and it's impossible to find any pictures you might want to purchase. He works a party like a Catskills comedian and makes everyone feel good as he zooms and careens through the event, but at the end of the day about the only pictures one see's are the young and restless, mostly young, hot men. About 2 hours after the wedding, he called my friend who had arranged everything and said that he was at City Hall on time but could not find us. Apparently he did not have cell phone service in City Hall because he never bothered to call us while were were there. And there were not that many people waiting to get married. While Steven's photography looks great, I cannot recommend him because he is a flake. read more

Steve Underhill's versatility is a rare thing. HIs technical skills are, obviously, impeccable, whether the images he's producing are wistful or sensual, character portraits or signal life moments. You might expect, from his reputation and accomplishments, to be dealing with a diva -- but no photographer could be easier, more flexible, less demanding, less controlling to work with. Steve shot a stunning series of intimate portraits of us at home and outdoors, and now five years later has just photographed our wedding. I didn't know what to ask of a photographer at our very non-traditional wedding, and happily, I didn't have to. Steve quietly recorded the occasion without ever intruding on it and without needing direction or supervision from anyone. Ceremonial occasions can become so stagey and artificial when a photographer is calling the shots, but I knew that wouldn't happen with Steve. It was like he wasn't even there -- except for the 300 photos we have as a record. At this point in his career, I don't know why Steve's work would even need reviews, on Yelp or anywhere else. Where to start? I started out as a fan in the late 80's to early 90's. Eventually, I got lucky and became a client in 2003. Mr. Underhill's work, for me, has always been somewhat underrated. At times, even by me, as I had never really explored his more diverse sides until later in his career. By diverse I mean his unique ability to capture things like sports, and his "colorful" side, but mostly his cameras love affair with the celebrated and famous (usually it's the other way around). Some have reduced his work to simply male erotica. But the jokes on them. He's up there with the likes of Bruce Webber and Herb Ritts. But what sets Underhill apart and make some able to say, "Oh, that looks like Steven Underhill" is his technique, consistency, and ability to pierce the facade of any individual or celebrity alike. Frankly, it's uncanny. What I admire about his work most, is that there's almost always a personal wink and nod to those classics of great newspaper photography of the last century! I don't expect those from today's generation to "get it." And I suspect neither does he. I do, and I love it!! And I will always be so grateful to Steven for taking my "40's" headshot. I'm a Leo, so understand I don't trust just anyone with my image! it's been a decade now. With a little luck, maybe I can get him to shoot my 50's portrait. As the years move forward, it's been a joy watching Underhill evolve, but on his own terms, leaving the critics speechless, but not his thousands of fans and clients alike. Steven has always been the "Go-To" photographer in San Francisco for so many events over the years. Having seen a great portion of his ongoing work, I did not hesitate to call him to shoot my husbands 50th Birthday party, which was a high end event at the Westin St Francis in Victor's Palace. He arrived early and quickly got to work shooting images of the venue and then of people as they arrived and as they were enjoying the party. My partner and I researched a few wedding photographers for our big day and feel super fortunate to have chosen Steven Underhill Photography. What an amazing artist with an incredible eye. Oh, and a super nice guy too!! My favorite performance photo of my husband EVER is one that he took at a San Fran concert in 2013. When we were back for another benefit concert in 2016, I recognized Steven's photos after the event and was thrilled to finally meet. He has an uncanny ability to capture dynamic people in motion. So much energy in all the shots throughout the benefit, and he truly cued in on the emotion from each performance in a still image, which is a tricky thing to do. It left me with another favorite of my husband performing, this one with epic wall shadows and the audience on their feet dancing! Such a great memory captured. We arranged for an outdoor shoot before we left town, and while my husband loves the camera... Having my picture taken terrifies me! Steven was so incredibly chatty, sweet and funny throughout our shoot. He gave great honest direction, and knew good hilly spots to shoot so we got a bonus mini tour of San Francisco too!
