This week's delivery of choice: Steve's Poké Bar! Way back before COVID was in existence, my coworkers and I would grab poke pretty frequently from Steve's Poké Bar for lunch at Lougheed. We all loved having this as a lunch option because it's, well, relatively more nutritious and clean than say, burgers or fried Vietnamese spring rolls. So, my bro and I decided to give the SFU location a try and waiting in steady anticipation for our custom poke bowls. The food came relatively quickly and the portions are still quite generous but...the sauce department was lacking. We both felt like there wasn't enough flavour to the poke, and the plain white rice was starting to overtake the delicious toppings. It was a bit different from my past experiences with the Lougheed location. Anyways, still got my poke fix, though I may lean towards trying Pokey Okey more next time haha read more

I didn't expect to find much good quality food at SFU, but I was wrong. You just need to walk around for a bit. This 4 seat poké bar was better than I hoped for. I made my own bowl, which is always a lot of fun. First time I've had quinoa as a base, but let's give it a go! I think I went for most of the items, except for the ones where you had to pay extra. The tuna I got was fresh, as were the other ingredients. I went wild on adding sauces at the end. I designed a great concoction. I didn't get a seat at 3pm on a Thursday, so I had to walk back to campus to eat it. A quick thing I learned the hard way, if you want quinoa, use a spoon. Overall, friendliest staff I've met on campus, delicious choices, and quick service. read more

I really love coming here, it's a great option for a hot summer day as a fresh/light lunch. I've been working as a researcher at SFU, so I feel super lucky to have this a 5 minute walk away from my lab. The business itself is pretty small, and if the line was long it would probably go out the door. With that in mind, the staff is pretty quick at serving people. Their prices aren't that bad, especially considering what they serve and that they're basically on a university campus. They also have a bunch of unlimited toppings, and the staff are willing to serve you a good amount of each if you ask. I often get the one scoop bowl with either the spicy scallop or the shoyu salmon and I have never been disappointed. They also have all their sauces by the utensils so you can add as much as you like. Their ponzu and spicy mayo are pretty great. I'll definitely be back...again... read more

This review for the Lougheed Mall location. We love Poke in Hawaii, so when I saw Steve's Poké, we had to try it. It was also a chance to check out the new food court. Overall we were happy with the service, quality of the Poke bowl, and dining area. The only thing I would like to see is a bit more Shoyu Ahi that I ordered. SFU students are lucky to have a poke shop so closeby. Richmond peeps still need to travel to downtown for their fixes. It's $8.90 for a single scoop and +$3 for an extra scoop. You can mix your bases and there's unlimited toppings with some premium toppings for an extra dollar. The base options include white rice, quinoa and salad. Compared to the other poke shops, this place serves pre-marinated fish either in shoyu or spicy mayo sauce. There is a daily feature which would cost you an extra dollar and the day I went it was chili flakes salmon. There aren't too many topping options and quite a few of them are premium. I like that they offer to season your quinoa or rice. This gives your base some taste without the vigorous mixing of your poke. I got half and half quinoa and salad with spicy scallop and spicy ahi tuna. For toppings I had corn, seaweed, crab meat, pineapple and cucumber. I also had some fried garlic and onions sprinkled on top. There are extra sauces on the side (spicy mayo, shoyu, ponzu, sesame oil and sriracha). My friend had pretty much the same toppings as me but she had half rice and half salad and shoyu salmon and shoyu ahi tuna as her proteins. Though a bit far fromm where I'm situated, this poke place is worth a try as they are one of the better ones in greater vancouver. read more

Great service with super fresh poke! I really enjoyed how flavourful the poke was as I did not need to add any additional sauces. Server was super nice and kept making sure she put an adequate amount of toppings into the bowl. This poke is legit. So good. The quinoa as a base is surprisingly awesome, not to mention nutritious and also, at no extra cost. All the fish is fresh, made daily, and the recipe is from (hold your breath) Hawaii. Yes, the owner is actually from Hawaii. If you don't believe that it's fresh, don't fret, they give you free samples of the fish (Including the daily special, tuna toro). Free. Samples. The regular (not premium) toppings are all unlimited, including pineapple and kimchi, no extra charge. All the sauces are on the side, made from scratch, do it yourself. I don't know if the other people writing their reviews have been around vancouver, but the price is not at all unreasonable. Actually, fresh fish, quinoa, unlimited toppings, recipe from Hawaii? A pretty decent poke bar that is away from the downtown/ Vancouver area and closer to home! The price for a large bowl is very reasonable for the amount protein and toppings they give you! For the large they give you two scoops of protein and you'll notice how generous the portion is when you start eating. It seems never ending. Both my husband and i particularly like the scallop with mayo. The scallop was large and flavorful! There were sauces that you can add yourself which included spicy mayo, ponzu sauce, sesame oil - i do wished they had a bit more variety in sauce though. We were both very full when we finished the entire bowl! Great place to swing by for to fill our poke cravings! read more

I was greeted like they had just opened and got wonderful ,patient ,through service for for my trouble. This place and the service and treatment I received made my day. This was where I had my first Poké bowl, and I LOVE IT! I'm a SFU student, so I'm here on the mountain quite a lot. Last year when they first opened, I decided to give it a try. Obviously, I fell in love with it and that was basically where I have my brunch, late lunch, and sometimes dinner. During the summer when I had no classes, I would just drive up to SFU and reunite with these delicious poké bowls LOL... I love their Spicy-Mayo Tuna, and Spicy-Mayo Scallop the most! My wife and I finally decided to try this place. We both had the large size with 2 scoops of poke. We ordered the spicy and shoyu tuna. It was very good and the portion you get for paying $11 and change was well worth the value. Also the various toppings you are allowed had a lot of variety. Items like tobiko, avocado, edamame, kimchi, fried garlic/onions, etc... Very small establishment but clean and cozy. The staff, I'm assuming the owner, was very generous and accommodating to our order. Service was very friendly. I would definitely recommend trying this place out. We will both be back again. Especially on the nights I have barre class and he has strata meetings. We see each other in passing and one of us decides on what's for dinner. I've seen steve's poke bar popping up on skip the dishes feed. I always veered away from ordering from them because of the delivery time. I bit the bullet and decided to otder. The prices for the poke seems to be on par with the ones downtown- or at least the ones I've been to. It ranges from $11- $13 a bowl. The toppings are fully packed into the bowls I ordered California deamin' and Shoyu a good time. The toppings looked the same to me, the only difference was one came with salmon the other came with tuna. I found their "sauce" to be super salty. I ate around most of the imitation crab meat because of that. The bowl alone was enough to fill me up fro the entire night. My fiance on the other hand had to split the meal into two. read more

As an SFU student and a poké lover, I was thrilled to see this open up on campus. The shop itself is tiny, but modern and cute. I walked in to be greeted by the lady behind the counter. At first glance, the prices looked extremely affordable. $8.90 starting?! ... With $3 extra per scoop and $1 per premium topping. Okay. Expected, it's poké! After picking 3 scoops of protein, I was offered unlimited toppings. Not many poké places offer that, but regardless, the portions are quite small in comparison with other shops. Nothing too special. The plain white rice was really squishy and wet and it was served super hot, so the cold fish and toppings mixed with the hot rice wasn't very pleasant for me. The fish kind of left a fishy aftertaste in my mouth. Everything was just a squishy mess for me, but it tasted okay. I was hoping it would be better, so I won't be coming here too often unless I have mad cravings for poké while I'm up on campus. read more

I finally got on the Poke bandwagon. I've been seeing a lot of Poke places pop up everywhere and now that it is a new food trend I had to get in on this sooner rather than later. I was in the SFU area as part of an independent publication and literature talk for my zine and came here 'cause it was a healthier option compared to other eateries in the area. I am not sure at this point what to expect from Poke and or what I have to compare it to, therefore, this is a Poke's virgin review. For starters it is $$$ for the portion size and you will be left hungry. Thankfully my meals were timed between my last snack and this bowl, therefore, I managed. I don't recommend if you're a student on a budget (for what you get) to come here as a filler. Most of the menu items are a la carte as with other Poke stations so the cost does add up. This is a small shop, therefore, seating is very very limited. I ended up bringing it back to my car and eating. The lady is super super nice. read more

Food and service wise, it's much better than the other poke places I've been to. I really appreciate the quinoa option. When we told the guy (he's the owner) it's our first time, he offered free samples of all the fish for us to try! Free samples!! It was awesome. He was really nice and friendly to us. The place is small, with a maximum occupancy of 10 (which at that time we exceeded). It's clean and bright. Music a nice and quiet, not deafening. His voice is a bit too loud for my liking but that's just a personal preference. Poke has been a hit or miss for me, mostly because I'm not a huge fan of going too heavy on the marinades and the sauces. The fish here is fresh and marinaded fresh daily. It's not overpowering but light and tasty. No complaints at all with the quality of food. There were some posts about it being not enough or that it's too expensive... I really disagree with that. Poke is just expensive in general. This place is cheaper than the stuff you get downtown. It tastes fresher. And they have unlimited regular toppings (pineapple makes poke awesome!!!). $8.50 for one scoop. That's inexpensive! But I guess if you are comparing to the outrageously affordable $5.50 classic breakfast at the Mackenzie cafe, then I have nothing to say... I would have given a 5 star rating, but while I was enjoying my poke, I heard him in the kitchen. He was being "strict" with his employees. Granted, they've only been opened for 3 weeks and it's important to make sure your workers start off right. Maybe cuz he's a younger boss, but his way of handling his employees' mistakes and bad habits could be better. There's a better way than to just point out all the things they did bad. Sure, striking fear may work, but it'll hurt your business in the long run. Employee turn over rates will be high and everyone will hate you. I really don't like mean bosses. I've had my share of these kinds of employers and it never ends well for them. There's a way to make the environment fun and happy while enforcing rules. I really love coming here when I'm able to afford it. It's a bit more expensive than some of the other nearby lunch options but hey, this is poke so it's to be expected! I always get the spicy salmon or spicy ahi tuna; both are always so good. I find the rice is a bit too hot sometimes and it's actually been so hot in the past that it partially melted my friend's plastic container. They offer unlimited free toppings which is awesome. These would be things such as: corn, edamame, tobiko, fried garlic, onion, seaweed etc. The downside is that the wait is a bit long because they sometimes only have 2 people working the front. But honestly, the customer service is amazing here. I had only been to this place twice before and on my third time, Steve immediately recognized me and said "Hey it's really nice to see you again!". You can really tell Steve genuinely loves what he does. His happiness is so contagious! It's always nice to see an owner or somebody at the top of the food chain working the front line with their staff. That's a hallmark of an excellent boss. :) I'm definitely going to come back more often, but probably not when I'm in a rush since the line ups here can get a bit long. read more

As someone who's always enjoyed the fresh and tasty poke that we've had in Hawaii, we were glad when the poke craze started to take root in Vancouver a couple of years ago. Steve's Poké Bar, located in the SFU campus on top of Burnaby Mountain was one of the first dedicated poke places to open up in the area but it wasn't until recently that we've tried them out. Unfortunately, many of the so-called poke restaurants in Vancouver don't live up to their Hawaiian counterparts so we've been a bit gun shy on trying new places. Fortunately, Poké Bar is actually a good option. While they're not exactly like what you'd find in Hawaii, their poke bowl options and pre-marinated poke turns out quite well. Instead of their signature bowls, we decided to build our own bowls with 2 scoops of poke with unlimited regular toppings. Their Spicy Salmon was their daily special poke (and was $1 extra) and we wound up with the Shoyu Salmon with Spicy Scallop as well as the Shoyu Ahi and Spicy Salmon. Some of the regular toppings that we included in our bowls were wakame, corn, imitation crab, edamame, red onions, green onions, fried garlic chips, and pineapple. While you can get rice as your base, we picked quinoa which actually went really good with the poke. If you like your poke bowl a bit saucier, they have bottles of sauce on the side that you can use to kick up the flavour. While the poke scoops aren't huge, the flavours were well executed and I'd be happy to come back and revisit. Service was also top notch... we mentioned that this was our first time here and they gave us samples of all of the poke options before we picked. read more

I ordered 3 poke from Steve's Poke bar in Guilford. They made a big mistake by omitting all the veggies in one of the order. So my tendency was to complain. But aside from that, I still ordered again for the mistake they did. And what did they do? THEY ADDED AN OLD AND BAD TASTE INGREDIENTS IN MY REPEAT ORDER. THAT WAS NOT NICE AT ALL. Good place for a quick fix on campus. Prices are reasonable: $8.90 for one scoop and unlimited toppings, and +$3/scoop. You can get samples as well if you're not sure which one to get, which is a plus since I am indecisive. I feel like they give you less per scoop compared to other poke places, but it is also cheaper, so you get what you paid for. There was a review that mentioned the extra $1 for the small size to be placed in a larger bowl. Personally I think that $1 is well worth it because they give you much more base and toppings in the large bowl compared to the small one. Good service and staff were friendly. Being my first time there, I immediately noticed how friendly the staff was. In addition, they were extremely helpful in explaining how to build my own Poké bowl. A lot of people are saying that this is overpriced. I can't make a real judgement but I do know that all the places downtown all start at $10+ for 2 scoops, while this place is rare in that they offer 1 scoop. However, in terms of portion size, the small is very very small and does not fill people up so in terms of cost - I think it is pretty average considering it has cheaper prices but gives you less portions. A characteristic of getting poke downtown is that you are full to the brim when you are done eating, while here I was still wanting more. So you get what you pay for. I did enjoy the spicy mayo fish, I tend to not pick spicy for sashimi because I find it overpowers the flavor but theirs had a very savoury taste that I really enjoyed. Ask them for samples before you make your pick! I enjoyed their sashimi for sure. Food quality here is not bad at all. HOWEVER, they lose stars on bowl size. The small size container is very small and have VERY steep edges. This means it is incredibly difficult to mix anything without stuff falling out - meaning my last 40% of the meal was eating plain and bland quinoa. The whole point of poke is to mix everything together - agreed?? They know how difficult it is as well to mix with those containers as they had a SIGN that if you ask for a big bowl but ordered the small size, they will charge you for that. I just don't understand why you would continue using a container that makes eating your food hard in the first place - especially when there are enough complaints for you to establish a rule that customers must pay extra for the big bowl for the small scoops. I can think of no other reason why customers would ask for the big bowl when they have the small bowl- maybe because they can't eat their poke properly???? It's like if a restaurant only served spoons with holes in them and if you ask for a normal spoon they will charge you extra. For that, I would not come back. Poke taste here is good but not exceptional, and not giving your customers proper utensils, knowing about this, and charging them for that is not great. I'm sticking to my poke downtown. read more

Outside of downtown, Poké options are limited so it's great that this exists. However, as the other reviews have previously stated, it is very expensive. Ok...fine...let's accept that it is expensive because it is Poké but then WHY do you awkwardly expect a tip from customers (it auto asks you for one when you pay by card...) when you haven't left the counter (just shuffled to the side) and you're already charging a premium. Subway doesn't ask us for a tip...and the concept is the same. They need to remove the tip option as it is making them look cheap and making their customers uncomfortable. read more

I had high hope for this place when they were still under renovation. When they finally opened, I was so excited to try them out since poke bowls are my favorite. However , it was somewhat disappointing. The food is overpriced and the portions are super small for something that costed me over $10.
