No matter where in the world that you call home and surf you know the name Stewart and the mark Stewart has made on the surfing industry. You can make the argument that Bill Stewart is the master / originator of the modern longboards that we see being produced today. Folks in Beverly Hills and Bel Air drive a Rolls Royce vehicle for the prestige, if you are riding a Stewart surfboard fellow surfers are looking at you in the same fashion as if you were driving a Lamborghini mixed with a Rolls Royce down the street. Stewart has been around for 30+ years and hopefully will be around for another 30 years. I have been meaning to stop by his shop in San Clemente for several years now. That time finally arrived during my last trip to San Clemente and I happened to staying right across the street from his shop. I walked in and honestly felt like I was walking into the Louvre. I was in awe of the history, the amazing shape, designs, energy & history that has gone into creating each one of the works of art on display here. It is amazing to see the history of the surfing industry in one shop. Stewart of course started shaping longboards but has moved onto smaller boards and you will even see a few fishes out there if you surf San Clemente enough. As I walked around the shop I was met by an amazing staff that had answers to whatever questions I had. With boards being made by computers and shipped from China to me goes against everything that surfing stands for. The energy of a hand-shaped board is much different than those coming from a conveyor belt system. One day I will purchase one of these boards and be stoked to ride it no matter the destination. I have surfed all over the world and observed Stewart boards in the lineup. Until the day that arrives when I will be paddling out on my own custom Stewart board I will admire this true surfing genius from a far and stop into this shop to just talk about surfing with the staff. I went into the shop yesterday to see if they could repair a rail ding I got on my new 2-Fun. I was told they didn't do repairs but Eric went the extra mile and repaired my ding on the spot. You can't even see where the ding was he did such great job! Now that's taking care of your customers! This is my 4th Stewart board and I can't be happier. I was torn between a custom 949 and a 2-fun. I'm getting a little older :) Bill Stewart and Eric were both really helpful. It came down to riding the 2-fun now or waiting for the custom 949. I bought a Redline 11 here and have so much fun with it. The board is responsive, catch waves easy. You can ride it on a small day with 2 ft waves or a big day 5, 6 ft waves and it always put a smile on your face. The service there is great too. Brought my longboard in with a rusted fin screw. I had spent hours trying to get it out via every conceivable method (super gluing a fin screw, rubber band method, etc) and when I broke a drill bit, I decided I needed to take it to a shop instead of do it myself. They don't normally do repairs or stuff like this, but the staff helped me out anyway and managed to get it out - which was NOT an easy feat. Erik and everyone else there were super nice and happy to help. I definitely would have ruined my board if I had done it alone... Now I can mess with a new fin setup and keep on ripping, thanks guys :) read more

Went in to browse for a used longboard to finally upgrade from my soft top and left with the perfect board within my price range. Erik was super helpful in showing me different boards based on my level/what I'm looking for, giving surfing tips, and setting me up with everything I'd need to get the most out of the board. He was so generous with his time and even showed me how to patch up dings. Took the board out in the water right after and had the best time ever. I was reluctant to purchase a longboard online and have it shipped from the Continental US to Hawaii. But the inventory of surfboards in Honolulu has been really low since the start of the pandemic. My first board was a Stewart I purchased on Maui 16 years ago - I really loved that board a lot - so I checked out Stewart's online store and thought the Ripster would fit my needs. I emailed the store and inquired if they had any in stock. Ashley emailed me the next morning and said they were receiving some later that week. A few days later, Ashley emailed me to let me know the boards came in. I immediately called the shop and ordered my board and fin. The staff was friendly and responsive to all my questions. Three days later, I picked up my 9'8" Ripster at the airport in Honolulu. Talk about fast service! And Erik was great handling the shipping. The board was securely boxed and arrived in perfect condition. The only bummer was that it stormed in Hawaii the whole week after I picked it up. Thank you, Bill Stewart you are the Rembrandt of surfboard shapers. This is my non bias opinion and review by a surfer ( 5'9" 164 pounds, surfing 41 years ) to whom it may concern i.e. surfers. Finally found it, the High Performance Longboard I've been hunting for and knew was out there,... custom epoxy, sand finished, thinned out to 2 5/8" thickness (Stewart Redline11) 23" wide, very light and very fast shipped across the USA right to my front door without a glitch. I have surfed quit a few longboards over the years,... and lean heavily to a very progressive long boarding style it's just the way I'am wired so anyway out of all the longboards I have owned 2 stand out above the rest first was the Infinity Rad Nose Rider 9' epoxy and the Stewart Hydra hull 9' PU both were super fun boards and I Road them to death. The last board I had just before I purchased REDLINE 11 was a FIREWIRE TJ PRO which was a ok board but it just didn't do it for me. So I did my home work checked out a bunch of boards and watched Bill talking about the Redline 11 on his website at which point I decided to go back a Stewart surfboard, got on the phone started yapping with Cody ( great guy to deal with! ) hammered out what I wanted, had it shipped and waited for a swell,... When I surfed the board for the first time I was totally taken back, I knew I hit JACKPOT! with this board, I was blown away honestly no hype the board is amazingly fast when you want it to be, turns like no longboard I've ever ridden on a absolute dime, want to hang 10 no problem however I was having to much fun on the back... I could not wipe the smile off my face, I did a bunch round house cut backs hit the pocket and flew down the face again with no hesitation, I truly felt like I was one with the board (I am not into Zen) it is that responsive. I just cannot say enough about the Redline 11 it so blows away any Longboard I have owned before by far, please understand there are a lot of great boards out there and I mentioned a few but this board for me is in a different Stratosphere! I believe Bill Stewart captured every angel of what a longboard surfer wants to do on a wave and produced the surfboard to do it with the Redline 11, so to that I say Thanks Bill you have and are going to make a lot of surfer very HAPPY! I would give zero star if I could! I walked out of the store feeling defeated, frustrated and mad. Here's the story- I called Stewart a couple of days before Memorial Day Weekend to inquire about the free board demo. The worker I talked to on the phone did mention we are able to demo for free this weekend. We drove 3 hours feeling super excited, hoping to get their 949 and redline after trying them out. (They didn't even have them in stock for us to demo!!!) We arrived at 9am(right after they opened) as the previous worker advised so we could demo whatever boards we have in mind. As soon as we arrived, there is this Asian guy who gave us such attitude the moment we mentioned we were there to demo. He goes "oh you can't demo today you have to either rent or buy" plus "usually people already know what they want, and they buy brand new boards after they demo". We had to keep telling him that we were told that we could demo and we drove for 3 hours for this. His attitude made us feel as if we did something terribly wrong. We literally had to swallow their shitty attitude and beg them in order to demo. The manager finally agreed to let us demo just ONE board for free. However, when we were returning the board, they wanted to charge us rental again!! How greedy!! We already purchased a wetsuit and they still wanted more $$ from us! They just would never stop! We originally planned to buy two new boards from them but we ended up just left the store feeling disappointed at the whole experience. When I was "begging" them at the store, I did see another person buying a board and the staff were super attentive and nice to him. The attitude towards us was completely opposite- we were treated like second class citizens. Anyways, mind you...if "you're not buying" a board then be prepared to get treated poorly! P.S. All the young kids were super nice, friendly and helpful. I feel bad for them that they are exposed in that kind of environment learning the worst work ethic and customer service. read more

After stopping at what seemed like almost every surf shop between San Clemente and County Line in Ventura this past week, I can not say enough about the excellent level of service and just overall awesomeness of the crew at Bill's store. They were friendly, approachable and informed and made me and my husband feel right at home as we searched for his 1st board. I've been surfing for almost 2 decades, and I can say that this shop is something special. Cannot recommend him and his store associates enough, they were so gracious that I could not imagine buying from anyone else in SoCal. Went to Stewart surf shop today for an outdoor sale on consignment boards. I negotiated 15% off. When I went to pay a young woman at the cash register tried to add an additional 8% price to the board stating she had to pay tax. I explained to her, I negotiated with a sales person and have received 15% off this board just like several boards in the past. She said "well, I'm in charge here" i asked for her cooperation based on my past purchases as a customer. She said, I won't do it. I am guessing she is Bills daughter with that kind of authority and taking over the business cause he would not have given such poor customer service over $62. I am taking all my business to USEDSURF in San Clemente they still honor the customer. read more

I used to enjoy the front clothing section, but it seems like high priced stuff now...where did the clearance section go? The staff is not consistant. Saw their website online and figured due to the cost of shipping why not just head down there and buy a board in person and surf while i'm there. (I live in Las Vegas) This is a professional surf shop. Bill helped me out selecting a board (Redline 11) He went thru all the details about the board. Sized me up for the correct one for my body weight and height and the rest is history. Bill also installed the fins, leash and got me a surf bag to protect it. If you buy the board they give you 30 percent off in accessories. He even let me wax the board in their shop since I was going to take it out that day. All the boards are shaped on site and these are handmade, not Chinese high production factory boards. I feel good about supporting a small company where they still do things the old fashioned way. There are some things that shouldn't be made in a factory and surfboards are one of them. Bill even helped me with directions for a local spot to take the board out since I have never surfed in San Clemente. I will be back for my next board when im ready to move up. What can I say that hasn't been said before? I got my first Stewart board 26 years ago, back when they were tucked away in the surf ghetto. At that time, it was by far the best riding board I had ever owned (and I had owned plenty before that one). I'm still riding Stewart boards and each new one I get continues to earn the title of "best board I've ever owned." The staff is excellent. The custom board service is fantastic; tell them what you want and they will know what to build. Every time I go to Stewart they are so friendly and helpful. My last trip I went over there to ask if they sold something to help me get out a stripped fin screw before I left for Mexico. They showed me the tool but said they could do it for me too. I didn't have my board so I got the tool but when I still couldn't get it out I brought it over and they got it right out for me. Just moved to SoCal and wanted to try surfing for the first time. I had read several great reviews of Stewarts and headed there to ask questions about what kind of board and length would be best for a beginner. They were great about not only sharing information about the range of boards, but also the best beaches to use as a beginner. I ended up returning later that evening to rent a board to use for the next morning. Checked out a Ripster 9'8" and headed to Clocktower Beach next to the San Clemente pier. Had a blast and even managed to get up on the board a few times. I'm not ready to commit to buying a board yet, but when I do, it will definitely be at Stewarts. read more
