I've been to Stewart's Photo a few times now, and it's always a great experience. On my last visit, I rented the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and it took about 5 min from walking in to walking out. The store is fully stocked with everything from cameras and lenses to tripods, memory cards, bags, and more. Whether you are just a beginner or a pro, they have you covered. They also have a good selection of reasonably priced used camera equipment. The staff really knows their stuff, and you can tell they actually care about helping customers find what they need. The downtown location is convenient, but be aware, parking can be a little tricky during tourist season. Stewart Photo is my go to place for all my camera rental needs! read more

My experience here put a stain on my Alaska vacation. The person helping me was very rude and I even asked him why he wasn't being very nice to me. He ignored my question, so I asked another staff member why he was acting like that, and he responded - YOU'RE FINE. There was also a sheet on the counter with the listed prices for the lenses. He quoted me a higher price and when I asked why he just said- "that's what it is." As much as I like to rent lenses for my Alaska excursions, I just cannot come back here. read more

Brian was very helpful on the phone and in person. He invited me downtown to drop off my Canon G-11 camera. He said he could pass it along to a local non-profit camera club. Whoa! Just arrived in Anchorage and assumed I'd either not be able to find a decent camera store or if I did, it would be really pricey. What an amazing find to discover this place. Fully stocked with tons of equipment, much of which you can rent/try too. I walked in with an idea of what lens I wanted but needed some help and guidance on selecting the right one. Bill took amazing care of me and really listened to my specific needs and wants and matched me up with the perfect lens. When he told me the price, I was floored. It was exactly the same price as what I could find online at a bigger box or online retailer. This place was highly recommended by a friend to trade in cameras I had. They offered low prices on both cameras, so I decided to trade them in on a sony 6400. I only used it for 7 shots, I called today to try to return it because of financial emergencies I am going through. I was told I would be charged 15% if returned for the shots I took. I already felt like they already took advantage of me and was not going to give them another 15%, seems is all they are after is more money gif themselves!! They may have the monopoly on photo service in Anchorage, but I think they need to have better customer and be willing to work with customers to give them the best deal and service possible. To me it's seems they are just after as much money as they can get from people and forget about good customer service. You can get better epic deals on cameras on line. I will never do business there again and would not recommend it. read more

I have shopped here several times over the years have been pretty unimpressed with them. One time I purchased a camera backpack from them and when I bought it home I realized it wasn't going to work optimally with my equipment so I returned it. Since I paid for it with cash I returned it expecting the same. I did get my money back but they initially claimed that they didn't have that much cash on hand, and that the eventuality of them raiding their safe or whatever was a huge inconvenience for them. For Peet's sake it was only a camera bag not a $5000 camera or lens. Another time I shopped here was for a Manfrotto tripod quick release connector, a 20$ part I had to pay $30 for here. The last time was when I brought a friend in here so he could purchase a DSLR camera kit advertised on their website fas in stock and available for the same price as Best Buy or Amazon!When we got there they didn't have it or anything close in price. They recommended a basic mirrorless camera for hundreds more saying how much better they are and how antiquated the [still in production] camera was and how we should have checked out their website to see if was there. Now a week later it isn't showing up but it sure as heck was there. I understand the value of shopping locally but sometimes locally just isn't the best idea. Hopefully Stewart's takes this review to heart because I really would like to support them. read more

I was flying into Anchorage when it hit me that the last time I saw my monopod was in my closet, not my suitcase. Once I landed I quickly googled camera stores in Anchorage and found Stewarts. Walking into Stewarts was like walking back to pre-Covid conditions. The shelves were very well stocked with numerous product choices. I found the perfect monopod, better than the one I left behind. I used it well on my Alaska adventure. While in the store I also noticed that it just wasn't a broad choice in accessories, there were a large number of various brands of camera bodies and lenses in stock. This is a photographers dream store. I am so happy to have found them. read more

Man, not sure what the deal is with all the harsh reviews? My experiences here have been nothing but positive. Granted, I mainly use this place to try out and rent lenses. As far as I know, this is the only lens rental shop in Anchorage. And they have GOOD stuff too. The uber-wide Canon 11-24 f/4? They got it. The Canon 100-400 IS II, got that too. They even have the outstanding Sigma art lenses for sale. (don't sweat Nikon folks, they got you covered too) The staff here has always been very helpful and knowledgeable in the dark arts of digital photography. They may be a bit on the pricey side, but they are downtown...on 4th street...really, what do you expect? read more

Friendly, flexible, will move mountains to make sure you have what you need, whether you came to buy (No sales tax!), or rent, this place is the standard. This is the only real photography store in Anchorage. Yes there are a couple other camera stores in the malls but they are primarily staffed by high school kids. The employees of Stewart's are usually actual photographers. They carry most of the primary name brand cameras and have accessories galore. Their prices are a couple bucks above what you can buy on the internet, but the internet does not have helpful people to insure you only buy what you need. read more

This is the go to place for anything camera related in Anchorage. I use to buy my dark room supplies here as it was far more cheaper than shipping them up here, but that was ten years ago and who needs darkroom supplies anymore? I'm not sure if they still have them here, but the room where all that was located is no longer those supplies. The staff is helpful in finding what you are looking for. There are tours out of here from Alaska Photo Treks, you must check them out and do there daily walking tour during the tourist season! The only reason for four stars is because they do up there prices compared to amazon and what not. read more

This is a relatively small shop, and we're not always sure why they stock the items they stock. For example, Stewart's tends to carry medium-low to medium quality tripods... One might think there'd be demand in a small specialty shop such as this for higher-end gear. Nonetheless, the main reason we go into Stewart's when we visit Anchorage from the bush is to get advice and information or to have minor service done on our cameras. The staff is excellent. To a person, they will take the time to really talk with you, demonstrate products, and arm you with ideas. We purchase from them when we can and we always look forward to stopping in when we're in town. Like a few other stores in Anchorage, Stewart's is a great resource if you live in the bush and need to talk to someone about gear. Give the a call! read more

I was in Anchorage on a layover and stopped into Stewart's. Bill was very helpful. He took the time to answer all of my questions about a camera frame I have been waffling about buying and I wound up walking out with one after putting this off for about a year. Great customer service. They are very patient and willing to open and show you all of their cameras and equipment. Their prices are in line with amazon's but you have the hands on experience and someone with knowledge to explain it too. I am a photographer. This last summer I was sent to Alaska on photo assignment for 11 days. About half way through our trip one of our CF card readers failed and we needed a reliable back up card reader. I went to my iPhone for a research session. I looked for a genuine photo shop, and we ended up at Stewart's. The staff was knowledgeable and interesting. With lots of local locations knowledge and shoot suggestions. They have professional grade equipment old and new. The prices maybe hiked up a bit but you're in Alaska, why wouldn't you pay extra? There aren't many other now options.. The store is kinda dated but I had fun bargain hunting their stock lots of Film Era stuff. I ended up leaving with my regular priced card reader, a couple random hoya filters, vintage camera bag straps and a smile. Cool place. read more

Best Buy told me my digital camera was caput, and that it was too old for a new battery. I went to Stewart's to look at new cameras. Instead of selling me an expensive new camera they found a battery that would work, and an aftermarket gadget that allowed me to effortlessly download my pictures and showed me how to use other features on my camera. They were knowledgeable, extremely courteous and helpful, and didn't make me feel like an idiot. From now on they get all my business. read more

So I'm on a 2 week land and sea cruise from Fairbanks, AK down to Vancouver, Canada and less than half way through I've filled up my memory cards. Most places in the tourist traps I've stopped at are charging double and even triple price for old, slow memory cards. Stewart's is charging market rate which is enough to get them 3 or 4 stars in the touristy areas where highway robbery seems to be the norm :-(. But as I'm perusing the shop, I come across Peak Designs new camera bag. I've been admiring these bags online for several months but never thought I'd get a chance to check them out in store and of all places way out in Alaska. But they not only had 1, but several in multiple colors. The staff was incredibly helpful and patient as I tried the bag out stuffing it with my gear. If I could give no stars I would. Worst customer service ever. Wait that is if I had customer service... 30 minutes in the store looking at camera bags, opening and closing and trying things out. Out of the 10 bags I tried out, I took 4 to the counter that the two employees were working behind. I wanted to see if they would work for me, opening and exploring the bags. One of the workers said something about food. I thought ok, he's gonna ask if I need help when he walks by me, nope... Ignored. 2 bags later, I had enough and thanked the guy that was left behind the counter for the amazing customer service. He was a smartass in his reply. I was a tourist in Alaska, and I forgot my camera battery charger, and was able to find a Universal Battery charger here for $20, and a corresponding USB cable to go with it for $12. LIFESAVER! I am listing the prices, because some of the other reviewers complained about prices. This is a little niche camera store, at the end of a very long supply chain. In chatting with the guy behind the counter, there is only ONE other full camera shop like this in the state, that other store is in Fairbanks like 350 miles and 6 hours drive away. The prices I got charged were quite a bit higher than internet, but if I wanted a bargain, I would not have forgotten my charger. I needed that equipment that hour, on that day, I could not wait. That is why you go in to a bricks and mortar store. You are a knucklehead if you think those guys can afford to keep their stock sitting around for you to show up, and then sell it just above their wholesale price. This was a nice little shop, and I would guess that the prices were lower than what my local Boston pro-camera store would charge for the same thing. I was afraid I would have to buy a FujiFilm-specific charger, (which would have been more $$, and that is if they carried it at all.) It annoyed me to have to buy the cable, because I've got zillions of them at home, but again, I needed it then, and I suspect if I had gone into any BestBuy or CVS in the Boston area they would have charged similar. They had a good selection of equipment, and were helpful. read more

As a visitor to Anchorage, I brought my Sony NEX-7 in to Stewart's to have the sensor cleaned because my photos had a small spot in the top center. (I had first learned about Stewart's through their flyer for local photo tours.) Whatever was on my sensor turned out to be very difficult to remove, and took a lot more effort than anyone expected. It took a box (or more) of VisibleDust swabs plus two kinds of cleaning solution (VDust and one other), with the VisibleDust loupe used for continual checking. It took more than half an hour to get the job done. I was very pleased with the care given to my camera and to the quality of the work. I am very pleased with the result, and thought it was well worth the $60, perhaps in swabs alone. I could not have possibly done that work myself. I browsed around the store while the work was being done, and saw that new items were sold at the retail list price. But there's no sales tax in Anchorage, so that's almost like a discount from some other places. They also have a small inventory of used equipment, which is almost certainly in excellent condition, based on the attention to detail that they showed on the sensor cleaning. read more

Traveling through AK, and made the stop when I noticed my censor needed to be cleaned. Staff was super nice and helpful. I was in and out in less than 10 min with a crystal clear image. Called Stewart's a day before the transit of Venus trying to find a solar filter that I could attach to a telescope to watch Venus pass by the Sun. I spoke with Micah and he didn't think they had anything that would help but he was able to refer me to a couple of places that might. Got a call back from him about 15 minutes later saying that he might have something that would work for me. I went to the store to check out the filters and it turned out that they weren't quite what I was looking for but I still really appreciated his advice and the fact that he cared enough to give me a call back. I also appreciated that he didn't try to talk me into buying expensive equipment that I didn't really need. Ended up buying a lens for my film camera because it had better zoom than my other lens and was only $10! These other reviews seem a little ridiculous; of course you can get things cheaper on the internet. If you don't mind buying based on pictures than go for it but I prefer buying in person. read more

I am a professional photographer on assignment in Alaska and I have a lens crap out on a private whale watching your in Seward. It's a Sunday afternoon 25 minutes before the store closes. I call the store and speak to Joe, explain my situation. First off the customer service I experienced was perfect, in fact above and beyond. They have the lens in stock, Joe pulls it and then sets me up with a courier service that delivers the lens to Seeard, a three hour drive away! I call this morning to follow up, again very professional, very helpful and very appreciative of my business. This is a top notch Pro store and I can tell you this they gained business. They sold the lens for the sake cost you can buy it online! They are courteous and professional! If you want to speak to people who know what a camera does and are knowledgable about all aspects of photography then give these guys a shot, you will be glad you did! read more

Really unsure of why ANYONE would leave Stewart's Photo a negative review this place goes WAYYY above and beyond! I personally had a very bad experience with a large franchise store ...I ended up returning the camera I bought there because it just did not suit my needs. When I was struggling and really needed advice on what to do Joe talked to me on the phone for probably a good half hour and I hadn't even bought anything yet and I was upfront with him and told him that if I did return the camera I had I was most likely just going to get another camera from this same store. He still talked to me for a very long time and was so kind and informative. I ended up returning that camera and going to them for my other camera because I was so impressed with Joe! I'm extremely happy with my camera purchase and will continue to buy all of my future equipment from them and I now rent lenses from them as well..I am always impressed with how kind they are and how they take the time to really talk to me and listen to me. Stewart's photo is one of those very rare locally owned gems that still exist in Anchorage!!! read more

Stewart's is great. It's a small shop with professional and knowledgeable staff. If you want to buy something on-line, fine, but you are not supporting the brick-&-mortar store and help you get. And didn't you just spend $25 for a stupid souvenir t-shirt at an Anchorage tourist trap? C'mon, you're in town, you need something it's up to you to satisfy that need and your choice how you do it, what help you get, and what you'll spend.
