We love cafes and bookstores, and when the two are combined, what could be better? We wanted to give Still North a try and planned to have breakfast there after browsing the store. Alas, the line was extremely long and didn't seem to be moving that fast, and the seating was packed. We decided to seek breakfast elsewhere after exploring the books. Since we didn't eat there, this review pertains only to the bookstore. It was very crowded and noisy. The focus here is definitely on fiction, so if that is your thing, you will probably love it. We were hoping for a more comprehensive selection. There were also lots of gift items, puzzles, cards, crafts, etc. read more

This is my favorite local bookstore. There is such a nice selection of books (the kids section is particularly cozy). I'm also a fan of the cafe with everything ranging from their drinks, both caffeinated and not, baked goods, and other tasty goodies. If I lived within walking distance, I'd happily stay here and work. There are enough tables and chairs that I've seen Dartmouth college students happily perch here and study. When the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is a welcome addition. If you're in town, I would make a point to check it out. read more

I would say the bookstore is fantastic and the coffee is horrible. Granted, I've only been once, I'm dealing with gestational diabetes and I can't have sugar (thus negating most of my go-to choices), and the only table available spun like a dreidel, so we ended up sitting on a windowsill. But none of those things would have mattered if the cappuccino I ordered actually tasted like a cappuccino. I honestly don't know what this was since there was no layer of milk foam or sensation of steamed milk whatsoever. The whole thing tasted like the Nescafé foam on a Greek frappe, which - if you've ever had it - will quickly make you realize it is not meant to be consumed. The presentation was nice, but it was hands down the worst cappuccino I've ever had. My husband ordered a breve (he had to explain what that was to the barista: a latte made with half and half) and it tasted better than mine, but not nearly as good as one would imagine if half of the cup were to have essentially been made of cream. Therefore: I don't know how they've been taught to make coffee drinks, but I would try something else. The books, however, were a nice distraction and I enjoyed perusing! They had some great titles there, and I would go back just to support them. read more

I had my hopes up. This is a college town so there should be no shortage of eligible barista. And it certainly masquerades as a legitimate coffee shop. However... I watched the "barista" make the coffees before I got up to the register. He was doing a strange cursory tamp gesture with a tamp, as if to knock excess grow grinds off the basket edge, but it was done in mid air and no pressure was applied. Auto tap I thought? The grinder looked complex. Maybe he was just making a tamp gesture to clean up the portafilter and it was already tamped? Me: "Hi, is that an auto-tamp?" "Barista": "I have a tamper yes." Me: "Yes I see that, the grinder, does it have a built-in tamper?" "Barista": gazes at me with a look of utter confusion on his face. Anyway, he actually didn't end up making my coffee. A young lady did. It was scorching hot to the touch. There was no effort to pour, it was just dumped in the cup. It was viciously bitter, and I only drank it because I was desperate for a little caffeine. Otherwise I would've dumped it in the bin. Three stars because I have a feeling there's nowhere else around here to get anything better. Otherwise I would give 2. read more

I found there wasn't enough radish or cucumber, and that the lemon/evoo was too salty and overwhelming, even though I asked for light dressing. Wonderful little place with fun and unusual food options. Part café and part bookstore, and it's nice to be able to sit and read with a mug of tea. Wait times for food can get long, but it's a small business where a lot of things are handmade fresh, so I think it's worth it. Coffee is good and there's a good amount of drink options for non-coffee drinkers, too. Bakery items rotate pretty often, and the donuts and cupcakes are quite good. Just a consistently nice experience every time. Great natural light and neat, modern design with some local touches. For those of us who still "go" to work, it's open after 5 most weekdays, which is rare around here. Or if you don't want to go in, order on their website or by phone and they'll leave your items in a little bag on the pickup table outside. If you're not quite sure what you're looking for, give them a call & they'll help you out just like you were there in the store. The food side has fresh bakery stuff & small-roaster coffee, and you can enjoy your drink inside if that's your thing. For grab & go, they use the same carryout app that a lot of nearby places use, or give them a call. Put your order in & head over, and it'll be waiting outside when you get there. The food's on a different pickup table, but labeled for you just like the books. Cheerfully cushioned bistro tables & outdoor "window" seats keep your butt warm while you get your hit of Vitamin D. Their COVID policies comply with the current guidelines. Bring your mask, be prepared to fill out a short contact-tracing form, and no inside browsing if you've been outside New England in the past 2 weeks. But it's worth the wait! read more

Still North Books & Bar is a breath of fresh air in a little town I care about, and I recommend it to anyone coming to Hanover for books, puzzles, coffee, delicious cafe food, or simply a great rendezvous spot with friends. Having grown up in Hanover and graduated from Dartmouth. I know how important it is to have a bookstore like this in town. While I love Left Bank Books for those hard-to-find used book treasures, we also needed a spot for new books and coffee, and this is just the place. I first met Allie Levy, the owner, while she was working around the clock to create the space, select the books, and secure the myriad funding, permits, licenses and everything necessary to open a shop in this historic town of Hanover, home of Dartmouth College. Her sparkle was infectious. Allie is the sort of person you meet, then immediately hope to keep in your circle of friends. She is intelligent and generous of spirit, in a way that invites long conversation, comparisons between her cat and your own, and a lot of laughter. The perfect blend of everything book shop owner. When I attended a preview of the shop shortly before opening day, I was inspired by so much more than the attention to detail I'd already heard Allie was putting into book selection, food, and the design of the space. The woman who designed and built the gorgeous wooden stools and tables in the shop was also at this preview event, and as I listened to her and Allie talk about their respective journeys, I was struck by their passion and by how important it is for one person to - as Allie put it - jump in and begin their dream without overthinking the scary parts. When the Dartmouth Bookstore closed, the town of Hanover was left with a tremendous gap that Still North Books has gone above and beyond to fill. The owner is smart, you can tell because the books she selects for her shelves are not just the best sellers that everyone's talking about. New authors get shelf space, poetry gets shelf space and it's clear that she takes care to represent diversity. The staff are generous with their time and talent. In the three months that they've been open (pre-COVID) I attended readings by famous authors, salon-style conversations with Dartmouth professors, as well as a community story telling night. It is hands-down my favorite spot in town to get a coffee or a glass of wine. Can't wait for them to re-open. read more

Came here trying to find a good latte in Hanover. I am not a traditional coffee drinker and am very picky about lattes. I do not like the strong, bitter, over roasted taste that you get at a lot of coffee shops (like Starbucks, Peets, etc.) and was looking for something smoother. This latte was definitely more what I was looking for and better than the latte at the super cute Brazilian chocolate store that I got yesterday. But what really lofted it into 5 star category was the pumpkin syrup. I seldom get syrups in my lattes, because they are too sweet, but they touted a home made syrup made with real pumpkin, and it's fall in New England, so I figured what the heck (knowing there was at least a 50% chance it would not be good and I wouldn't be able to finish it as a result). Beat PSL I have ever had, hands down. The pumpkin syrup here is not sweet at all - more earthy and mild and natural and pairs nicely with the smoother espresso roast they use for the latte.
