She's talked about how good it is and how much she loves their drinks. It took us awhile to get there but 2026 found the time in our schedules to make it happen. We rolled in on a Saturday morning and we both were in dire need of some caffeine. Black Sheep Coffee seems like it was originally a coffee truck that set up shop in Sister Bee Gift Shop. Whether it is the same owner, I am not sure but the coffeehouse did seem to be going through a renovation the day we dropped in. The walls were bare and there was a guy slowly filling them in with hooks and stuff. Emily and I went up and she ordered the French Toast latte that was a special and I almost ordered it until I saw they had americanos. So, I grabbed my usual. While the shop was a bit busy, the drinks came out fast and I forgot about how they package their drinks here. They come in a clear plastic soda cup with a sealed lid. Emily told me about it but it wasn't until I saw it that I was overly enthusiastic about how cool it was. They seal the top of the drink like a soda can so you have to pull on the tab to open it up. I like how you can order a bunch of coffees and not worry about them spilling out of the top and that they can keep for a few days in the fridge. I sipped my americano and it was just what I like from my espresso and water. Bitter but not too strong and not too diluted. Emily was over the moon with her French toast drink that she ordered another one to have another day. Once I took a sip of hers, I had caffeine jealousy. While I loved my americano, that French toast latte was one of the best things I ever had. The baristas were super friendly and Emily snagged a punch card so I am assuming we will be back before too long. Which is fine with me as I would like to see what they do with the remodeling that seemed to be going on and maybe grab some merch while I am there next time. They did let me have one of the stickers they put on the cup for my personal sticker collection, so that was awesome! All-in-all, Black Sheep is a bright spot in the Hanna City community.

There is actually no moat of ice cream, corn dogs and deliciousness, but there is a counter where you can order some of those. After driving past Kastle Kreme a few times on my way to Iowa, I finally made a conscientious effort to stop and try their ice cream. I do love me some ice cream shacks. Boy, what a yummy stop it was. From what I could tell, you can only walk up and order food. Which is fine, as other ice cream shacks I have been to are similar. For the size of the building, it's kind of odd that there isn't an indoor area, unless I am mistaken. It's about the size of a small business building, if that makes sense. If I can, I will update this blog to reflect any updates I find out about the place. I ended up ordering a simple ice cream cone. For the life of me, I don't remember the flavor (probably swirl), even after looking over the menu and my photos. I do remember enjoying the ice cream and thinking how I wish I could get some closer to my home. You really can't go wrong with most ice cream shacks. Also, you really can't screw up ice cream. Looking over their menu, it seems they offer your usual ice cream shack food offerings. Hot dogs, tenderloins, chicken tenders. Your usual lunch or dinner offerings. I didn't try any of those but they sound yummy. I will have to try some food next time. It's not too often I drive to and/or through Galesburg, so who knows when I will get back to the Kastle. I am hoping to revisit it next summer to try their other offerings as I love a good tenderloin and ice cream cone. When I do, I will update this blog accordingly.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping local businesses open and thriving, but I will humbly step off my soap box, and continue on to share my love for this beautiful business. As I get off the train from San Francisco and search up local restaurants, I come across Cornucopia, a hybrid business model that has both a deli and a market with great prices and a bigger selection than most stores I have seen. With curiosity in my head, and a growling stomach, I set off to walk the entire 3 minutes it takes to get to Cornucopia from the train station. I need not say the location of this place is great. The moment I walk in, I am greeted by both the delicious smell of Indian food as well as a nice woman by the name of Susan Lyon. She tells me that this is not only a family run business, but a business run by all women, and Susan (with her husband) are the founders. After our greetings and conversation, I walk to the deli where they had a fine selection of foods from sandwiches to curries. I order the coconut curry (a popular dish, from the words of the man working there) with turmeric rice, and a cup of coffee. I cannot understate the amount of flavor it has, and I highly recommend it to anyone who cannot do spicy food. I also see their selection of bulk spices, frozen meals, supplements, and everyday use items like toothpaste and shampoos. I walked out with a smile on my face, and as the cold Illinois wind hits me I feel longing to go back to the warmth of Cornucopia once again, but my train was to leave soon. I enjoyed every moment of this business, and I will always hope that they expand their business to California. If you ever are visiting Galesburg, Illinois, please make sure to go here. You will be pleasantly surprised by this humble family business. I hope my review, written on the observatory deck of the Amtrak, not only convince you to go here, but give you the little slice of life that Galesburg has to offer.
