Love this lady. It's a little expensive but I probably just think that because I am a mediocre seamstress and was just too chicken to do it myself. Charged $45 to replace a zipper on a lined, down-filled vest. But it's a very high quality job. Quite expensive and doesn't keep good notes when you bring multiple items, relies on memory, which resulted in multiple mistakes. She made a mistake when itemizing the clothes I brought for alterations and proceeded to charge me for her costly mistake. Will definitely not be going back. read more

Based on the positive reviews I took a bridesmaids dress here to be tailored. Not a huge job, just a hem and taking the straps up. This was August 8th. She told me my dress would not be ready until September 10. I told her that was cutting it too close (the wedding was September 13 in another state) so she amended the date to - HA - September 9. Ostensibly it was because she was going on vacation the last week of August. I was a little leery because, not only did five weeks seem like a really long time to complete the job, if something went amiss there would be no time to fix it before the wedding. Should have listened to my gut. So I arrive near closing time on September 9 and show her my ticket which clearly says 9/9 in her handwriting. She looks around the shop (which by the way is a mess--heaps of clothes everywhere with no tagging system that I could discern) and after a few minutes of looking, asking me what it looked like, etc. she found it hanging in a dressing room...and it wasn't even started!! She said she thought it was supposed to be ready on the 10th. (To which I was thinking: even if that's true, does that mean you weren't planning to start until the night before it was supposed to be ready? Then why was the heck was the pick up date more than a month in the future?) She said it'd be ready the next morning, which it was. But then, she still charged me full price (!) which was $40 (!) for a hem and straps. To be fair, the work was high quality, which is why I gave two stars instead of 1. And she did manage to hold on to the original hanger and garment bag I brought the dress in, which I guess is a plus (?). But my experience is enough to ensure I will not return. Not only did she not offer an inconvenience discount, she didn't even offer an apology. Her exact words were: "good thing you came in today." Yeah...good thing I came in on the day it was supposed to be ready. I mean, what the heck? I have heard and I strongly suspect that it's true of this place, that alterations and cleaning on women's clothes take longer and are charged at a higher price than men's clothes for a similar job, and that's doubly true for wedding attire. Clearly being a female is a factor that can't be helped. But I recommend that wherever you go to get alterations, NEVER mention the word wedding. I took my rehearsal dinner dress (it was sequined, arguably as difficult a fabric, if not more so, than polyester dupioni) down the street to Avondale Expert Alterations on August 22 and it was ready August 29. I had the straps taken up and it was only $12. That's where I'll be going from now on and I suggest you do too. read more

UPDATE: I took 3 pieces there that had minor rips. I figured it would be a fair price since it was last time. She wrote random numbers on the receipt and I asked specifically if those were the prices because they seemed high. She said "no" then proceeded to charge that much when I came to pick it up. $45 dollars to fix a rip in a hoodie and a tapestry and to fix the hem of some shorts. I'll be looking for a new place for alterations. I took a pretty heavy knit sweater there and it had a hole in the collar. She said she couldn't knit it back but she would sew it underneath so it couldn't be seen. The next day it was ready and looked like new when I picked it up. Perfectly sewn back together. I couldn't even see where the hole was before! And it was only $6!! read more

Well, it says something that I keep returning to Stitch & Sew the past 3 years. The owner is a nice lady but she will tell you like it is - no I can't let that out or make these jeans that are 2 sizes too large fit you because the pockets will be too close. But 99% of the time, she CAN make it work (as long as you are realistic). 3 Years ago, it was hemming jeans but with a 10# weight loss, she is making my clothes FIT again. Most of her work for me lately has been fitting skirts, blouses (great white blouses that once fit me like a sack are now nice & slim and fitted), dresses, etc. It's like having a new wardrobe. Even clothes that are my size sometimes don't fit me just how I want and she can always give my clothes that extra oomph that makes them look like they were made for me instead of off the rack. She is BUSY because she is GREAT. Prom and wedding season in the Spring, I always tell her if I can wait a few weeks for something because she is swamped - otherwise, I know she'll turn things right around as quickly as I need. read more

I have priced alterations on business suits and dress pants ALL over Atlanta and Decatur. The Stitch and Sew had the best prices and did incredible work! The little lady that runs the place is very sweet and will ALWAYS do all of my future alterations. She has hemmed at least 30 pair of dress pants and has done numerous other alterations. Every time, I have been happy and I know the work is done well. If you EVER need a seamstress, go there. I went here to get a suit jacket altered after reading rave reviews and was really excited! I paid $60 to have the sleeves shortened and the waist taken in, which was a little on the pricey side but I was alright with it for what I was hoping would be quality work. I got the suit back and it is totally unwearable :( . Sloppy work on shortening the sleeved- she moved one of the buttons up, but didn't make a button hole for it, which is glaringly obvious. As for the body of the suit- weird wrinkles, creases, and an awkward and amazingly unflattering fit. I would've been better off wearing it off-the-rack, and, in fact, had to pay $200 for another off-the-rack jacket to replace it, which I'm now terrified (and time constrained) to have tailored. Summary: Sloppy work, bad tailoring, not great or fast service, and expensive. I will never come here again, and I advise that no one else does. This appears to be an owner-operated shop, and she does all the work herself. The look of the joint, next to a package store in the no man's land between two cities (Decatur and Avondale Estates), isn't super confidence-inspiring, but this is one of those don't-judge-the-book-by-the-cover situations. I've been going to her sporadically for more than a decade (maybe closer to two) for small jobs, like a leg tapering here or an arm hemming there. So there was a level of trust when I recently replaced a chunk of my dated wardrobe and had to figure out where to get the new stuff altered. It'd been half a decade or more since my last visit, so I guess I was mildly surprised to find her still stitching away in the same seat when I visited with my first batch of new sportcoats. She did a fine job hemming the arms to length, so when I purchased some suit jackets that needed both the arm work and the girth taken in I took them to her. I was a bit nervous about getting the measurement right -- I didn't want the jackets too tight or too loose and I'd never had this done before, having always settled for the boxy off-the-shelf cut -- and this is when I learned to trust her eye. She had me sized me up and pinned in less than a minute; she was happy to tweak here and there until I was satisfied. I was still nervous about what I'd get, but two or three weeks later I had some nicely sewn, slim-fitting suit jackets. I've been wearing them for a month or so and smile each time I don them, appreciating the cut. The only downside: she got backed up on a blazer arm-hemming job, and wasn't done when she said she'd be. I had to wait another week. The suit jackets may have taken an extra few days, too. I don't remember, but fair warning: if you're adjusting a new wedding suit and decided to wait until two weeks ahead of making your life-time vow, this probably isn't the neighborhood alteration shop for you. I'd advise going to a bigger, slicker establishment. For me, it was no big deal because I wasn't in a rush and I live nearby. Also, as noted, there's a package store next door, and, yes, they have a craft selection, so it wasn't a waisted trip. To sum up: if you've given yourself some wiggle room on your deadline, and you want the peace of mind of confident measurement and competent execution, all at a reasonable price, then Stich 'n Sew is your shop. I say this at the risk of extending the time it takes her with my next job. But it's worth it if I can steer more business to her and keep her going, not that she appears to need it. Also, do note that she only accepts cash, at time of pickup. There's an ATM in the gas station across the street if you forget, but she writes the price on the quaint yellow carbon copy ticket that she hands you at drop off, so make sure to look at it and bring the requisite amount. read more

I would not rely on these guys. First of all, a basic alteration takes about a week and half. When I did find time to pick up my suit, I arrived at 11 am the store was closed for no reason. I need my suit tomorrow but I have no clue when the store will open as it is supposed to be open right now at 11 am on a Tuesday. read more

I brought two pair of new pants here for hemming and have had great results. I recently brought a suit back to a men's chain that offers free lifetime alterations to get the pants let out. They must have let them all out because now they practically slide off me. I'll now be bringing them to Stitch and Sew to be done right - even though I have to pay for it. read more

I brought an A-line skirt that was too long and too big around the waste-- I wanted it converted to a pencil skirt, hemmed, and tightened. It was done perfectly in a week and cost $30. Great deal. I will be going back for anything I need altered in the future. read more

Bought new suit. Dropped off coat to have sleeves taken up. Did not call to tell me was ready. Picked up two weeks after drop off. Sleeves have 4 buttons each. No button holes. S&S stitched button holes, then ripped them out realizing their mistake. They did have to move buttons to compensate for length. Material is frayed from button hole stitching. Wore jacket once. Cannot fix this material around cuffs and buttons. $200 suit coat. $25 for S&S. They returned my black suit coat, covered with lint and several bits of colored thread all over. Never returning again. read more
